Mechanic dies when vehicle falls on him
A Buffalo man died Friday afternoon from injuries he received when the vehicle he was working on at a local car dealership slipped off a lift and fell on him. Union County Coroner William Holcombe said William (Bo) Nichols, 41, of 707 Riley Road was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m. at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Nichols was a technician at Union Chrysler Dodge Jeep.
Dealership owner Tim Svedlund said Nichols had the front part of the van he was working on on a lift and the back wheels were on the ground. Svedlund said service manager David Sinclair told him Nichols had been working on the van for several hours and was almost finished with the job when the accident occurred. All he had to do was tighten a part and something happened and it slipped off onto his chest, Svedlund said.
Union County EMS and the Union County Rescue Squad were called to the scene. Rescue Squad Assistant Chief Billy McCain said Union Chrysler workers had already removed the van from Nichols when rescue workers arrived. Svedlund said Sinclair, who is Nichols best friend, had started CPR. Svedlund said Nichols had been working at the dealership for more than four years.
Nichols is survived by his wife, Patty, and a 10-year-old daughter. He was a super guy, said Svedlund. He was probably our best technician. Just a great guy. His brother, Randy, works back there as a technician, too, side by side.
