ALBERTINE BEDENBAUGH

Funeral services for Albertine Hearl Bedenbaugh, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Roger Martin will officiate with entombment in Darlington Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2711 Middleburg Dr., Suite 105, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Bedenbaugh, widow of William Thomas Bedenbaugh, died Tuesday, Nov. 9. Born in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Carrie Roberts Hearl. She was a member of Twitty United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, William Bill and Anna Bedenbaugh of Chicago, Ill., Thomas Tommy Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, Robert Bob Bedenbaugh of Hartsville; daughter, Margaret Gaido of Cartersville, Ga.; sister, Alene Thomas of Conway; sister–in–law, Virginia Gin Hearl of Georgetown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren.

JAMES L. ADDISON

NEW YORK, N.Y. — James Leslie Black Jack Addison of New York, N.Y., formerly of Hartsville, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in a New York hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of his father, Jesse Addison Sr. of 1215 Martin Luther King Drive, Hartsville.

CREOLA THOMAS

Creola Thomas, 71, died Sunday at her residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ELY JENKINSON

Funeral services for Ely Stark Jenkinson, 66, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Byron Wilson officiating with burial in Andrews Chapel cemetery near Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202 or the Lou Scott Center, 1045 Stoneridge Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Jenkinson died Sunday, Nov. 7. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ely Stark Jenkinson Jr. and Aline Smoak Jenkinson. He was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his sister and brother–in–law, Betsy and John Smith of Shreveport, La.; brother and sister–in–law, David T. and MaryAnne Jenkinson of Warner Robbins, Ga.; several nephews; several nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister, Florence Ann Jenkinson Grim.

JAMES N. PRESCOTT

Mr. James N. Nab Prescott died on Monday, Nov. 8, at Carolinas Hospital System of Florence. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1108 Robinson St., Hartsville. Hines Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.

OTIS NORWOOD

DARLINGTON — Otis Maxie Norwood, 87, died at his home Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Norwood was born in Darlington County, son of Maxie and Maybelle Pipkin Norwood.

He served his country in the United States Army and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Norwood was a charter member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church and Faith Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon of both churches. He also was Sunday school director at Faith. His first love was for his Lord, his family and his dogs. His legacy is his unconditional love for his family.

Surviving are his wife, Jill Woodham Norwood of Darlington; son, Maxie (Tara) Norwood of Johnsonville; two daughters, Linda Norwood and Penny (Rick) Gosnell, both of Darlington; grandchildren, Nick Gates, Dix Freeman, Jessica Freeman, Jordan Norwood, Anne–MarieNorwood, Jillian Gosnell, Gabrielle Gosnell and Chris Brookens; great–grandchild, Ian Otis Britt; a brother, Harvey Register of Virginia and three sisters, Net (Donald) Logan, Helen C. Kent, both of Darlington, and Mildred McClain of Florence; also, an aunt, Lila Jackson.

Mr. Norwood was preceded in death by a sister, Louise N. Hughes, and brothers, Bill and Bob Register and J.C. and Jack Craft.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 and Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1309 Lamar Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

SARA COURTNEY

Graveside services for Sara Byrd Courtney, 83, were held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Darlington Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jed Hermes officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Mrs. Courtney, widow of George Courtney Jr., died Wednesday, Nov. 3. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Henrietta Andrews Byrd. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughters and son–in–law, Judy and Willey Belew of Pine Bluff, Ark., Renee Courtney of Florence; sister, Dorothy Austin of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers, John T. Byrd Jr. of Darlington, Earl T. Byrd of Raleigh, N.C.; three granddaughters; four great–grandsons.

ANGUS J. HUNTER

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Angus James A.J. Hunter will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2004, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Hoodfield cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Hunter died Friday, Nov. 5, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jay Gule and Estelle Abraham Hunter. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of Hunter's Gulf on Main Street, owner of the Coffee Shack and lastly was self–employed as a long distance truck driver.

He was married twice, first to the late Margaret Smith Hunter and later to Gladys Bacote Hunter.

Survivors include his wife of Darlington; three daughters, Margorie Ann Hunter Thomas, Andrea Peterson, both of Darlington, and Anita (Rozoromeani) Johnson of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Morris A. Hunter of Texas and Leo J. Hunter of New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Ezekiel of Darlington and Vickie Gains of Raleigh, N.C.; five brothers, Early (Elma) Jackson of Baltimore, Md., Palmire (Ann) Hunter of New York, James Williams of Connecticut, Milton (Meta) Stuckey and Curtis Bacote, both of Darlington; in–laws; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins.

A sister, Bannie, and a brother, Jay Gule June, preceded him in death.

SAMUEL J. ATKINSON

ROCK HILL — Graveside services for Samuel Jesse Atkinson, 76, were held Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Grandview Memorial Park with Dr. Robert Shrum officiating, directed by Greene Funeral Home of Rock Hill.

Mr. Atkinson died Friday, Nov. 5, at his home. A native of McBee, he was the son of the late Little John and Betty Northcutt Atkinson. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in McBee. He was a graduate of McBee High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was formerly employed with the Beachery, Champion Marble Company, security guard at River Hills and retired as a self–employed paint contractor. Mr. Atkinson was very active in the American Legion Post 34, serving as past vice commander and also active in the 40 & 8 organization.

Mr. Atkinson is survived by his wife, Bette Anne Edwards Atkinson; and his brothers, Robert Atkinson and Lloyd Atkinson, both of McBee, and Tony Atkinson of Lake City.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

CHUCK LANGLEY

Funeral services for Charles E. Chuck Langley, 57, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Revs. Ladell Humphries and Jim Beck will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -Memorials may be made to the North Hartsville Baptist Church Youth, 1117 Patrick Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550. -

Mr. Langley died Saturday, Nov. 6. Born in Kershaw, he was a son of the late Nathan and Ruth Montgomery Langley. He was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, usher and Bible school worker. He served as a Marine in Vietnam and was owner/operator of Coast to Coast Tour Bus Lines.

Surviving are his wife, Fran Bailey Langley of Hartsville; father–in–law and mother–in–law, Richard and Lily Bailey of Hartsville; sister–in–law, Shan Brown of Hartsville; brother–in–law and spouse, Dwain and Sallie Bailey of Hartsville; nieces, Paula Hegler, Pam Roberts, Samantha Brown, Danielle Brown.

DON EDWARDS

Funeral services for Don H. Edwards, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at South Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dave Worthington and the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mr. Edwards died Thursday, Nov. 4. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Clanie Brazzle and Emma Watford Edwards. He was a charter member of South Hartsville Baptist Church and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacherand RA leader. He retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 43 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the DAV Post No. 47, Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, American Legion Post No. 53and the Darlington Senior Good Time Band. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop No. 511.

Surviving are his wife, Frances O'Neal Edwards of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Don and Dell Edwards of Apex, N.C., Hyllius Reese and Carol Edwards of Brunswick, Ga.; daughter and son–in–law, Pat and Jim Dority of Apex, N.C.; brothers, C.B. Edwards of Hartsville, Bobby Edwards of Latta; step–sons and spouses, Autrey O'Neal, Roy and Maria O'Neal, Steve and Joanne O'Neal, all of Darlington; step–daughters and spouses, Faye and Joe Lewis of Darlington, Linda and David King of Ethel, La.; seven grandchildren; one great–grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Mitchell Edwards, and his brothers, Trellis Edwards and Levell Edwards.

EDDIE HUDSON

Funeral services for Edward Eddie Hoffman Hudson, 25, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2004, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Wells will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -

Mr. Hudson died Saturday, Nov. 6. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Bonnie Owens Hines and the late Ernest T. Hoffman. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, a graduate of Lamar High School and was employed with Crenlo of Florence as a welder. -

Surviving are his mother of Darlington; sister, Carrie Hoffman of Utah; brothers, Tommy Hudson of Darlington, Tim Hoffman of Florence; uncle, Ben Owens of Lamar; aunt, Jean Howell of Gainesville, Ga.; fiancee, Kim Melton of Hartsville; maternal grandmother, Delane Caston of Lamar; paternal grandmother, Loretta Tadlock of Darlington. -

LaFERN MATUSE

Funeral services for LaFern Petty Matuse, 71, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Becky Jones officiated.

Mrs. Matuse, widow of Arthur Matuse, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George Edward and Mary Gandy Petty. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a loving, fun mother and grandmother. She was employed with Nitronics for 15 years and retired as owner of Petty's Store. -

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, James and Sheila Amerson of Yankton, S.D.; daughters and son–in–law, Pat and Buckwheat King of Hartsville, Lavel Amerson of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Lyles, Shirley Strickland, Avice Freeman, Daisy Brown and Miriam Edwards, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Stacy Seymour, Machelle Riley, Shannon Waldron, Butch Waldron and Chris Bartley, all of Hartsville, Vance Amerson, Jamie Amerson and Kelly Amerson all of Yankton, S.D., Eljai Amerson and Tiffany Amerson of Hartsville; eleven great–grandchildren.
