Mrs. Gardner died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005. Born in Union County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Troy and Ruth Howie Griffin. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and was a longtime employee of Langston’s Florist.
Surviving are her husband, Jennings C. “J.C.” Gardner of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Betty Eckman of Waldo, Fla., Ray Gardner of McBee; daughter and son-in-law, Von and Johnny Helms of McBee; sisters, Barbara Wallace of Harrisburg, N.C., Brenda Howell of Wingate, N.C., Nancy Gaffney of Augusta, Ga., Vicky Lisenby of Monroe, N.C.; brothers, James Griffin of Peachland, N.C., Billy Griffin of Salisaw, Okla., Ralph Stevens of Monroe, N.C., Charles Stevens of Wingate, N.C.; grandchildren, Tonya Sanford, John Helms, Chanda Helms, Summer Gardner, Ray Gardner Jr., Dylan Gardner; 5 great-grandchildren.
ISAAC H. WHEELER
Mr. Wheeler died Saturday, Oct. 29, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late McKinley and Sadie Bishop Wheeler. He was educated in the Darlington County public school systems and was a graduate of Butler High School. Mr. Wheeler was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are his spouse, Bessie Mae Cranford Wheeler of Chesterfield; two daughters, Theresa (Gene) Melton of Cheraw and Latasha Pearson of Hartsville; two sons, Valerian (Lisa) Holloway of New Jersey and Barron (Tyisha) Pearson; a step-father, Willie John Johnson of Hartsville; one brother, McKinley Wheeler Jr., of New Jersey; three sisters-in-law, Mary Jones, Patricia Scott and Alean Wright, all of Chesterfield; six brothers-in-law, L.C. Cranford and Dennis Cranford, all of Chesterfield, Dock Cranford of Paterson, N.J.; five aunts Maudie (Ludwell) Campbell and Lugenia Bishop, both of Hartsville; Lizzie Bishop of Patterson, N.J., Marie Lovett and Maggie Burns, both of Washington, D.C.; 12 grandchildren; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews and other closer relatives and friends.
EFFIE ARTHUR
Mrs. Arthur was born Oct. 15, 1951, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Marco and Macie Holloman Bevel. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1970. She was employed at Fast Track Restaurant as a kitchen supervisor and at Morningside of Hartsville as a server.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her passing brings sorrow to those who knew and loved her.
Those who are left to cherish the loving memories of Effie Mae include a son, Chuckie McKinney of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Ashley Hunter of Hartsville; seven sisters, Eunice (Willie) Jackson, Shirley B. Davis, and Sarah Tedder, all of Hartsville, Nova Jean Bevel of San Leandro, Calif., Pearlie Mae Williams and Maureen Scott, both of Baltimore, Md., and Macie Lee (Cecil) Sansbury of Bishopville; four brothers, George (Mamie) Bevel of New York City, David (Faye) Bevel of Battle Creek Mich., Otis Lee Bevel of Hartsville and Jerome Bevel of Augusta, Ga.; her grandson, Tyriq McKinney; a special nephew, Frankie Sansbury; a special niece, Michelle Thomas; a special friend, Pamelia Hickman; her confidant, Eugene Edwards; other close relatives and very dear friends.
BYRON L. HUGGINS
Mr. Huggins died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late Doode L. and Edith Johnson Huggins. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and served in the U. S. Army from 1965-1967. He was a fun-loving and giving husband, father, , and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Steen Huggins; daughters and son-in-law, Angie Huggins McKenzie and Daren McKenzie, Kerri D. Huggins; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eloise and Keith Blackmon, Ann and Johnny Brown, Patricia and Howard Dampier, Billie and Elton Newman, Sharon and Johnny Sturdivant; grandchildren, Joseph McKenzie, Parker McKenzie, Dani-Reed McKenzie and Mallory McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mendel Huggins.
WILLIE O. JOHNSON
Willie, affectionately known as “Ted, ” “W.O.” and “Poppy, ” was born in Greenwood on Oct. 24, 1942, to the union of the late Monroe James Johnson of Mullins and Mary Frances Johnson of Ware Shoals. He was the oldest of four children. He lived in South Carolina during most of his early life and has lived in New Orleans for the past 34 years.
He received his education in the South Carolina public school system. He graduated from Butler High School in Hartsville in 1960. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture in 1965 from Hampton University in Hampton, Va. While at Hampton, Willie was enrolled in the ROTC program and the National Society of Pershing Rifles. Upon graduating from Hampton University, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He began his engineering career in 1965 as a construction engineer with the United States Army Corp of Engineers. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.
In 1962, he met Glenda Stein of Ft. Worth, Texas, in Ashland, N.H., where they were student workers at Rockywold Camp. Willie and Glenda united in holy matrimony on June 25, 1967. From this union they were blessed with three children, Garreth Monroe, Garron Matthew and Gennith Minet.
In 1973, Willie received a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Willie was a licensed structural/civil engineer in Louisiana, Alabama, California and Virginia. He later participated in continuing education programs at Louisiana State University, Tulane University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Texas. He held membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers and Louisiana Engineering Society.
W.O. Johnson & Associates Engineering Consultants was established in 1980. As president, his professional experiences included 38 years of diversified architectural, civil and engineering design/construction management experience on projects spanning from the development of a 2, 500-man military base to the design of a $2.5 million airport facilities renovation. Other experiences included design and construction administration responsibilities for office buildings, bridges, recreational facilities, storm drainage structures, airport facilities and pavements, streets construction and prison facilities. In 2004, Willie received the Mayor’s Minority Business Award recognizing excellence for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport for Transportation Services.
Willie believed firmly in serving others and the doctrine and teachings of Jesus. He was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church for 34 years. He served as the teacher of the adult Sunday school class, chairman of the finance committee, church council and member of the building committee. Willie also served “The children of the world” in various capacities within the Kiwanis International organization as president of Ponchatrain Kiwanis and was awarded “Kiwanian of The Year.” As a proud Hamptonian, Willie served as president of the New Orleans Alumni Chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association Inc., Southwest Region representative and alumni recruiter. Willie is responsible for sending several outstanding New Orleans students to his alma mater.
Willie’s generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family. Willie was preceded in death by his father, Monroe James Johnson, and brother, Loranza C. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife Glenda; children, Garreth, Garron and Gennith; daughters-in-law, Stormy and Tonya; grandchildren, Tyler Matthew and Gabrielle Marie; his mother, Mary Frances of Summerville; one brother, Nolan B. Johnson (Renada) of Langen, Germany; a sister, Stephanie J. Richardson (Thomas) of Summerville; three sisters-in-law, Minnie Barriteau (Joseph) of Queens, N.Y., Burnetta Johnson of Baltimore, Md., and Renada Johnson of Germany; two brothers-in-law; nieces, Candace Barriteau and Tiffany Johnson; nephews, Marcus Richardson, Bryan Richardson, Nolan Johnson Jr. and James Stein; aunts, Odessa Jones, Lucy Bell Johnson and Ida Furnace; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
JACKIE TAYLOR
Mrs. Taylor, widow of William Harry Taylor, died Sunday, Oct. 30. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Lee and Bessie Blackmon Gibson. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was retired from Winn-Dixie.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, H. Lee and Jean Taylor of Darlington; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Taylor and Lee Woodham of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouse, Reagan Taylor of Columbia, Kristen Taylor and Herb Nicholson of Summerville, Keri Taylor of Columbia, Taylor Woodham of Hartsville, Susan Woodham of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Gainey; brothers, Willie Gibson, Edwin Gibson, Leland Gibson, Tom Gibson and Joe Gibson.
ALICE HUMPHRIES
Mrs. Humphries died Sunday, Oct. 30. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late John and Lucy Blayton McInville. She was married
to the late Fonso Bryant and then to the late Fred Humphries. She retired from American Can and was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, Manuel (Betty) Bryant of Darlington; grandchildren, Sarah and Jerry Gainey, Gloria and Greg Smith, Joey and Rebecca Tyner, James Tyner and Woodrow Tyner; also, a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ira Warren.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice House, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.
PAULINE LITTLE
Mrs. Little died Friday, Oct. 28, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was a daughter of the late Hardsen and Ester Orcharid Tillmen, and was born in Waysburg, N.C. She received her education in the Union County public school system. She was a longtime member of Faith Tabernacle Prayer Tabernacle until recently joining Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving are five children, James Little Jr. and Willie James Little, both of Hartsville, Jerry Leach of Camden, Robert Little and Tracey Little, both of Bethune, and Ricky Leach of Virginia; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of sisters, brothers and other close relatives and friends.
MARJORIE W. BROWN
Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, Oct. 26, in a local nursing home. She was born in Florence County, daughter of the late Charlton Leon and Bertha Welch Wilson, and was the widow of David Gordon Brown. She was a sales clerk for B.C. Moore’s for a number of years and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Leonard Dave Brown and Kevin (Wyndee) Brown, both of Florence, a daughter, Janet Huggins of Florence, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters: Dolly Maddray of Charleston and Willie Mae Lee of Timmonsville.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by two sons, Russell Brown and Johnny Mack Brown.

ROMA REDFEARN
Mrs. Redfearn, widow of James Berry Redfearn Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 26. Born in Anson County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Eddie G. and Lilla Hancock Waddell. She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sisters, Miriam Roush of Norwood, N.C., Marguerite Rowan of Ansonville, N.C.; brother, Eddie G. Waddell Jr. of Atlantic Beach, N.C.; daughter-in-laws, Jean Hunter Redfearn of Hartsville, Jean Lutz Redfearn of Beaufort; niece, Edwina Webster of Eden, N.C.; grandchildren, Brucie Pennington, Harriet Gupton, James Redfearn III, Kathy Brown, Chuck Redfearn Jr.; 13 great-grandchildren.
MILDRED G. LUNDY
Mrs. Lundy, wife of the late P. Woodrow Lundy, died Saturday, Oct. 22, at National Healthcare in Columbia. She was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Boyd White and Sue Byrd Gainey. She attended Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood and was a retired registered nurse. She was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde Gainey, B.W. Gainey and Harvey Gainey, and two sisters, Julia Gainey and Dorothy Gainey.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwen Paschal and her husband, Bill, of Blythewood, and Pam Osborne and her husband, John, of Columbia; two sisters, Carolyn Richardson of Conway and Marian Adams of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Don Gainey of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, Lacey Paschal and Woody Paschal.

Mrs. Lawhon died Saturday, Oct. 22. Born in Clio, she was a daughter of the late William Augustus and Atlanta Gibson Currie. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a past president of the Civitan Club and Civitan of the Year. She was a member of the Hoe and Rake Garden Club, the Mary Ann McCulloch Circle and was a Clemson University Master Gardner. She was a registered nurse in Camden, New York, Marley Electric, A.O. Smith, Sonoco and Sandy Memorial Animal Hospital.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn “Knocker” and Yana Lawhon of Chico, CA, Lewis Lawhon, William Lawhon and Marili Lindler, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Brant Purvis of Lexington, Martha and David Gifford of Conway; sisters, Gladys Jones of Springfield, Va., Christine Funk of Columbia; grandchildren, Garrett Lawhon, Zane Lawhon, Christopher Gifford, Glenn Gifford. She was preceded in death by her infant son, William Lawhon, her brothers Sam Currie and Buddy Currie; grandchild, Aaron Lawhon.
ALICE CADDELL
Mrs. Caddell died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Perry Thomas and Onnie Odessa Thomas Wint. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Lonnie Caddell Sr. of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Ric and Jean Caddell Jr. of Bethune, Robert Keller of Angelus; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Dave Key of Apex, N.C.; sisters, Mickey Dampier of Hartsville, Hazel Gray of Lake Tawaki, Texas; grandchildren, Johnny Bryan, Jody Jackson, Aimee McAdoo, Rocky Caddell III, Becky Bryan; nine great-grandchildren. .
