DARLINGTON — Grover Gainey, 51, of Dovesville died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, in a local hospital. A graveside service was held on Sunday, Oct. 23, in Black Creek cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Gainey was born in Darlington County, son of the late Roosevelt and Geneva Cline Gainey. He was a farmer and had worked for Darlington County and the City of Darlington.
Surviving are five brothers, George (Jennifer) Gainey, John Gainey, all of Darlington, Robert (Peggy) Gainey, Roosevelt Gainey Jr., Ronnie (Annetta) Gainey, all of Dovesville; two sisters, Blanche Gainey of Darlington, Lelia (Ernest) Tyner of Patrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday night at the Funeral Home.
JOSHUA G. ELLISON
BISHOPVILLE— Graveside services for Joshua Glenn Ellison, 19, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, in the Wells cemetery with the Rev. Robert Griggs officiating, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville.
Mr. Ellison died Sunday, Oct. 23. Born in Camden, he was a son of Robert Ellison and Glenda Atkinson Ellison. He was a member of Elliott Baptist Church.
Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Charles Ellison of Bishopville; his maternal grandmother, Evelyn Atkinson of Bishopville; aunts and uncles, Nancy and Richard Johann of Richmond, Va., David Ellison of Bishopville and John and Lynette McKenzie of Lynchburg; cousins, Matt McKenzie and Don McKenzie, both of Lynchburg and Ellen Johann and Leigh Johann, both of Richmond, Va.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Glenn Atkinson and his paternal grandparents, Albert and Willie Mae Ellison.

Mrs. Davis, widow of Maxwell Davis and Charles W. Smith, died Friday, Oct. 21. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Julius C. and Lenora Dixon Catoe. She was a member of South Florence Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Janice Maybin Majerczak, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Grover Johnson will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Majerczak died Saturday, Oct. 15. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William Maybin and Helene Pierce Corino. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Dr. Swindler, widower of Guyline Woodley Swindler, died Tuesday, Oct. 18. Born in Sparta, Tenn., he was a son of the late Roy and Maggie Woodley Swindler. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a chiropractor serving the Hartsville community for 40 years.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jim Goff of Winston Salem, N.C.; sister, Bonnie Clark of Sparta, Tenn.; grandchildren, Stephanie Bankston and Jennifer Payne.
MATTIE COE
Memorial services for Mattie Coe, 80, will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Mrs. Coe died Monday, Oct. 17, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie and Mell Rogers Baker. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Surviving are six daughters, Grace (Willie James) Davis and Dora (Ronald) Maurer, both of Hartsville, Jacqueline Wright of Maysville, N.C., Lenora Tyler, Emma Jean Coe and Angela (Charles) Sartor, all of Columbia; two sons, Alexander (Connie M.) Coe of Hartsville and Herman (Connie F.) Coe of Lydia; a special friend, Liz Bullock of Lydia; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
ESSIE MAE ROBINSON
LAMAR — Funeral services for Mrs. Essie Mae Damon Robinson were held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Unionville AME Church in Mayesville. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar, with the Rev. Joshua Dupree, pastor of Unionville, officiating the service.
Mrs. Robinson departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Carolinas Hospital System after a short illness. She was born on May 15, 1950, in Lee County, a daughter of Josephine Damon Wilson Hudson. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1970. She was employed at Western Sizzlin’ Steakhouse until her health failed. Mrs. Robinson was a member of Unionville AME Church in Mayesville.
Essie Mae was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Her passing brings sorrow to those who knew and loved her. One of her sisters, Aileen Witherspoon, preceded her in death.
Those who are left to cherish the loving memories of Essie Mae Damon Robinson include her mother, Josephine Hudson of Lamar; her husband Norman Robinson Jr. of Lamar; seven daughters, Vonda (Tony) Ford, Wanda (Mark Lowery) Damon, Renee (Roger) Brown, Trumelia Robinson, Gloria Robinson, and Ebony Robinson, all of Lamar, and Tenishia Robinson of Timmonsville; five sisters, Mattie (the Rev. Leo) Chapman of Florence, Patricia Wingate and Dorothy Hudson of Mayesville, Linda (Lafayette) McDonald and Viola Harry, both of Sumter; three brothers, Roosevelt (Pauline) Wilson of Washington, D.C., Roger Lee Hudson of Mayesville and Kenneth (Melinda) Hudson of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; her aunt, Janie Mae Wilson of Lamar; two sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and very dear friends.
MARSHALL JOHNSON
Funeral services for William Marshall Johnson, 67, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 19, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Hazel Mixon will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Johnson died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Hilton and Hessie Thomas Johnson. He was retired from Nucor Steel after 22 1/2 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Granger Johnson of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas William and Faye Johnson of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Penny Johnson, Barbara Wilson, Brenda Gardner, Michelle and Mark Flowers, all of Hartsville; sister, Barbara Ann Threatt of Kershaw; brothers, Sam Johnson and Junior Johnson, both of Hartsville, Tony Hutchinson of McBee; eight grandchildren.

Funeral services for Venita Ann Byrd Dixon, 54, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve Funderburk officiated with burial the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dixon died Saturday, Oct. 15. Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late Everette and Gladys Johnson Byrd.
Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Faith Dixon and Robin McFarland, Bridgette Dixon, all of Hartsville; sister, Carolyn Byrd of Oklahoma; brother, William “Bill” Byrd of California; grandchildren, Michelle Wilson, Christy Foss, Anthony Foss and Angelica Foss.
She was preceded in death by her father, Everette Byrd, her mother, Gladys Byrd, and her spouse Johnnie Dixon.
JOYCE S. STORAR
Graveside services for Joyce Smith Storar, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.
Mrs. Storar died Sunday, Oct. 16. She was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John and Georgia Ann Kelley. She was a homemaker. She was first married
to the late Burdette F. Smith and then to the late N. R. Storar. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Smith, a brother, Mendel J. Kelley, and by a sister, Sara Lou Kelley Raines.
Survivors include two sons, Kelly Smith and wife, Julia J. Smith, of Chapin and Mitchell B. Smith and wife, Joyce Smith, of Vero Beach, Fla.; one brother, Bill Kelley of Camden; one sister, Mary Kelley Tolson of Florence; seven grandchildren, Michelle Smith, Alice Smith (Timm) Weber, Margaret Smith, Kelly P. REV. BILL TODD SR.
DARLINGTON — A graveside service for the Rev. William Allen “Bill” Todd Sr., 70, of Sligo, Pa., was held, Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 10 a.m. in Grove Hill cemetery, with full military honors. A memorial service followed at 11 a.m. in the First Church of God, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
The Rev. Todd, formerly of Darlington, passed away on Oct. 11 following a sudden and unexpected illness. He was born in 1935 in Industry, Pa., son of the late Paul Ewing Todd and Charlotte McGaffic Todd. He was a graduate of Midland High School class of 1953 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all kinds of sports. After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years attaining the rank of master sergeant. He worked in the field of testing and calibrating electronic equipment used in aircraft and served in Korea, two times in Japan and Thailand. Following his discharge from the military, he became ordained in The Church Of God, Anderson, Ind., and served churches in Kendall, Fla., Titusville, Fla., Oil City, Pa., Darlington, Rimersburg, Pa., and then retired after pastoring in Somerset, Ky. At the present time he had just accepted an interim pastorate at the Church of God in New Castle, Pa., and had been there just one week. He was first married
to Dolores A. Dalton, who preceded him in death. He then married
Lana M. Hertwick Myers.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, William Allen (Sandra) Todd Jr. of Wadsworth, Ohio; two daughters, Pamela A. Clark of Tempe, Ariz., Sherry L. Todd of Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Daniel Clark IV, Kimberly Clark, Christopher Todd, Caitlin Todd; two brothers: Robert E. (Nancy) Todd of Industry, Pa., Earl Raymond (Rose) Todd of Midland, Pa.; a sister, Thelma Joan (Charles) Weishorn of Murraysville, Pa.; three stepchildren, Scott (Lori) Myers of Rimersburg, Pa., Mark (Julie) Myers of Woodbridge, Va., Heather (Steve) Custer of Knox, Pa.; seven step-grandchildren, Jordan Myers, Mariah Myers, Tracie Myers, Erin Myers, Kenneth Myers, Ashley Custer and Katie Custer; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Todd was preceded in death by two brothers, Smith Wilbur Todd and Paul Amil Todd; two sisters, Evelyn Copestick and Margaret Eimira Todd.
MARTHA C. DAVIS
Funeral services for Martha Coleman Davis, 58, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at Green Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Canty officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis died Friday, Oct.14. She was born January 1947 in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Mary Benjamin Coleman and Calvin Coleman Sr. She was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church where she served faithfully. She retired from Sarah Lee Hosiery of Hartsville, after 20 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Albert Davis Jr. of the home; one daughter, Yvonne (the Rev. Michael) McMillan of Florence; three sons, Leonard Davis, Wendell (Felecia) Davis and Albert Davis III, all of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Victoria Davis and Celine Davis, both of Hartsville, and Joseph McMillan of Florence; four sisters, Maggie (McKinley) Moore of Sound, N.Y., her twin, Mary Smith and Maudie (Preston) Zimmerman, both of Society Hill, and Margaret Coleman of Sumter; three brothers, Leory (Learlean) Benjamin of Society Hill, Monroe Benjamin and Henry Coleman, both of Hartsville; five sisters-in-law, Arena Davis, Hattie (L.C.) Cranford, Josephine Davis, Edna D. She was preceded in death by five siblings.

Mrs. Jackson died Saturday, Oct. 15. Born in Alexandria, Va., she was a daughter of the late Anthony Robert Wackerle Sr. and Charlotte Theresa McCaw Everett. She was a master gardener, a published writer and an organic farmer. She was the former publisher of the Cheraw Chronicle and was the Aiken Bureau chief for the Augusta Chronicle. She was a former television reporter for WALB Albany, Ga., as the Valdosta Bureau chief.
Surviving are her son and his fiancé, Rob Jackson and Michelle DeHerrera of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and John Ellard of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Beth Carey of Gaithersburg, Md., Judy Sobeck of Annapolis, Md.; brothers, Danny Everett of German Town, Md., Steve Everett of Valdosta, Ga., Tony Wackerle of Frederick, Md.; her special friend, Stanley Byrd of Society Hill; stepson and spouse, Matthew and Danielle Byrd of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Justin Ellard, Julia Ellard, Ryan Byrd, Vincent DeHerrera and Gabriel DeHerrera.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Wade.
