Mrs. Powe died Thursday, Oct. 13. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Lela Purvis Hall. She retired from Hartsville Manufacturing and Red Fox Apparel.
Surviving are her sisters, Jeannette Moore of Hartsville, Betty Steen of Orangeburg; brothers, Byerly Hall, Silas Hall, George Thomas Hall, all of Hartsville, Melvin Hall of China Grove, N.C., J. D. Hall of Rockwell, N.C.; nieces, Joyce Darnell, Dorothy Dixon, Cristal Beasley, all of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Willis Hall, Walter Hall, Lonnie Hall, her sisters Dorothy Hall, Nancy Ann Hall, Alma Hess Poston, Leola Tyner.
MARY ELIZABETH LUNN KIRVEN
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, at Swift Creek Baptist Church, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Kirven was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Walter Kemmery and Adelaide DuBose Lunn. She was a member of the French Protestant Huguenot Church in Charleston. Mrs. Kirven attended Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C., and graduated from Coker College in Hartsville. She was a devoted teacher at Carolina Elementary School in Hartsville, Robert E. Lee Academy in Bishopville and several schools in Charleston. Mrs. Kirven was a member of the Pilot Club and served as a volunteer in the Charleston Visitor’s Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Kay Lucas Kirven, in 1980.
Survivors include three sons, David Lawrence (Georganne) Kirven of Wedgefield, Kay Lucas Kirven Jr. of Hartsville and Joel Pollard Kirven of Charleston; two daughters, Jacqueline Kay Kirven of Hartsville and Elna Joy Kirven of Charleston; one brother, W. K. “Bug” (Faye) Lunn of Darlington; and two sisters, Floride Andrews of Darlington and Miriam Lunn of Charleston.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.

EARNEST HOLLINGSWORTH
Mr. Hollingsworth, who died Oct. 12, was born in Rockingham, N.C., a son of the late Rev. J.C. and Catherine Lynch Hollings-worth. He was retired from Talley Metals and attended Blessed Hope Independent Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Dixon Hollings-worth; daughters, Jordan Hollingsworth, Lee Ann Hall of Hartsville, Sheryl Weaver and Beverly Owens of Lexington, N.C.; brothers, James Hollings-worth of Lexington, N.C., and Donnie Hollingsworth of Hartsville; sister, Carolyn Dalrymple of Kernersville, N.C.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Hollingsworth.

JIMMY INGRAM
Mr. Ingram died Monday, Oct. 10, at his residence. He was born in Darlington, son of Thelma Carnes Ingram and the late James Walter Ingram. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School and attended Florence-Darlington Technical College. Mr. Ingram was formerly employed with Stone Container Corp. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Danny Ingram of Florence, three nieces and a nephew.
DAVID T. ATKINSON
Mr. Atkinson, who died Thursday, Oct. 6, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Cohan and Pearl Wallace Atkinson. He was a Veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Hendrix Atkinson; sons, Michael Gene and Charles Edgar (Eddie) Atkinson; daughter, Kathy Layton; siblings, Ray Atkinson, Margie Byrd, Lillian Hayden, all of Hartsville, and Vivian Staten of Georgia; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, Thomas and Randall Atkinson.
RONALD HONNEY
Mr. Honney died Thursday, Oct. 6. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Harvey N. and Lurline Suggs Honney. He retired from Darlington County School Bus Shop and Chesapeake X-Ray. He was the official Santa Claus of Darlington and was a member of St. David’s Lodge No. 72 and an honorary member of the Darlington Rescue Squad. Mr. Honney was the time keeper for St. John’s/Darlington High School for 18 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Melba Moody Honney of Darlington; son, Ronald M. “Marty” (Melinda) Honney Jr.; daughter, Rene Honney (Pete) Sturgeon, all of Darlington; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Madison Sturgeon; three sisters, Wilma H. (Howard) Banks of Marion, Blanche A. Honney and Carolyn D. Honney, both of Darlington; and one brother, Harvey N. (Carol) Honney Jr., of Florence.
Mr. Honney was preceded in death by brothers, Oliver Honney, Olin Honney and E. J. Flowers.

SARAH L. CARDONA
Mrs. Cardona died Wednesday, Oct. 5. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Luther W. and Alice Johnson Gainey. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was retired from Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pomptom Lakes, N.J.
Surviving are her sisters, Gladys Morris and Peggy Cassidy, both of Hartsville, and Louise Steadman of Wagener; 17 nieces and nephews; 29 great nieces and nephews.
VIRGINIA C. GRIGGS
Mrs. Griggs, widow of Odis Wilson Griggs, died Sunday, Oct. 9. Born in the Cash community of Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Calvin and Mamie Kimrey Chapman. She was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She retired from Reeves Brothers Finishing Plant at the age of 63 after 26 years of service. She was a loving Christian wife, mother and grandmother and was commonly referred to by friends and family as Grannie or Tink. The word LOVE explains how she felt about her Lord, church, family and friends. Her day began with a smile and ended by reading her Bible and praying.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jennie Lib and Blake Sellers of Hartsville; grandsons and spouses, Michael and Charlotte Auman of Hartsville, Calvin and Alison Auman of Sumter; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Auman, Caroline Auman, Walker Auman, Jack Auman, Richie Freeman, Rachael Kelley; step grandchildren and spouses, Sheryl and Mark Howle, Rocky and Lisa Sellers; step great-grandchildren, Dylan Howle, Kendall Howle, Robbie Sellers, Grant Sellers; sister-in-law, Vicky Chapman of Cheraw; special care givers, Ann Hicks and Dora Douglas; numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leon Chapman, Monroe Chapman, and Thomas Chapman; sisters, Louise Carter, Bertha Tilley, and Mable Lavee.

ERNEST W. WHITE SR.
Mr. White, widower of Doris White, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Medical College of Georgia. A native of Waycross, Ga., he was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He retired after many years of service as a machinist from Sonoco Products Company. He was a member of St. Luke Methodist Church in Hartsville and attended Thomson First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Fitts White.
Survivors are a daughter, Eleanor Champey of Smyrna, Ga.; son, Ernie W. White Jr. of Foley, Ala.; one brother, James L. White of Hartsville; friend, Hazel Barnes of Thomson; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
RUFUS E. JOHNSON
Mr. Johnson died Tuesday, Oct. 4. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Johnny Garrett and Hazel Chapman Johnson. He was a loving and giving husband, father and grandfather. He worked at Tedder’s Hardware.
Surviving are his wife, Jackie Sue Yarborough Johnson of Hartsville; sons, Sean Johnson of Dovesville, Stacey Johnson of Florence; sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia Gainey of Hartsville, Francis and Donnie Davis, Clarese Johnson, all of Hartsville, and Margaret Johnson of Society Hill; stepsons, John Horace Welch, Alan Ray Welch, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Torey Johnson, Austin Johnson, Paige Johnson, Payne Johnson.
SARAH L. CARDONA
Mrs. Cardona died Wednesday, Oct. 5. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Luther W. and Alice Johnson Gainey. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was retired from Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pomptom Lakes, N.J.

JAMES E. OLIVER
Mr. Oliver died Saturday, Oct. 1. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Sam Caleb Oliver and Nida Oliver McLendon. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Roebuck Oliver of Summerton; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri Lynn and Rick Holmes of California, Gail and Jim Russ of Henderson, N.C., Karla Mazzola of Massachusetts; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Ann Westheimer of Hampton, Va., Scott and Paula Westheimer of Raleigh, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Laurence and Rae Oliver of Summerton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Jessie Byrd of McBee, Yvonne and Bob Campbell of Columbia; special son-in-law, Robert Howe of California; special mother-in-law, Mary Roebuck of Massachusetts; 10 wonderful grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a very dear friend, Col. Clarence Hilton of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Jackie Coker and Ellarea Coker.
JEAN KIRVEN
Mrs. Kirven died Friday, Sept. 30, in a Hartsville hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Hallie James and Sudie Mae Lowder Weaver. Mrs. Kirven had retired from Nytronics and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She loved her church family and her grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Booker and Tammy Gainey, both of Hartsville; one son, Larry Kirven of Darlington; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
JOSEPH W. THOMAS
Mr. Thomas, husband of Iris Windham Thomas, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. He was born in Maxton, N.C., a son of Viola Deaton Thomas and the late Joseph William Thomas Sr. He was a tremendous positive impact on this world. He was proud to have been an instrumental member of the 1949 Wofford College football team who’s undefeated season led to an invitation to the Cigar Bowl.
Mr. Thomas served the local community where he retired from the Lee County Election Board and was a former Bishopville City Councilman. He was a true animal lover and was a member of the Manchester Trail Riders. He was a member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church. He was a retired farmer and livestock feed salesman. Most of all he was a loving and kind husband, father, family man, and friend. His loss will leave a hole in the hearts of everyone he touched, but his life was a true testament to the goodness of man and the love of God.
Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville and mother of Lake Wylie, include four sons, Bobby W. Thomas and his wife, Lisa, of Hartsville; Johnny L. Thomas and his wife, Bianca, of Greenville, Bill Miller and his wife, Pam, and Steve Miller and his wife, Julie, all of Lauringburg, N.C.; two daughters, Tenya T. “Sissy” Jeffords of Columbia and Susan T. Hudson and husband, Chuck, of Hartsville; a brother, Howard H. Thomas and wife, Nancy, of Pamplico; eight grandsons, Matthew Miller, Nathan Thomas, Patrick Jeffords, Clay Miller, Drew Miller, Cole Hudson, Mason Thomas and McLeod Thomas; four granddaughters, Caroline Jeffords, Chloe Jeffords, Jordan Thomas and Abby Hudson; two step-granddaughters, Taylor Jordan and Gerit Jordan; a special friend, Darasa Thomas; two nephews; and three nieces. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
PATTI L. WALL
The family will greet friends tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro and other times at the home of Bill and Myrtle Wall, 699 S. G. Wall Road in Lilesville, N.C.
Miss Wall died Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Anson Community Hospital in Wadesboro. She was born in Anson County, N.C., on Jan. 14, 1927, a daughter of the late Stephen Graham and Lucy Covington Morton Wall. She was a graduate of Lilesville High School and recently celebrated her 60th class reunion. She was retired from Alltel with 23 years of service and later worked part-time with Tu-Paul Communications in Wadesboro and was a member of Lilesville Baptist Church.
Surviving are her brothers and sister, Bill Wall and wife, Myrtle, and Jim Wall and wife, Sara, all of Lilesville, Dot Northcutt of Rockingham and John Wall and wife, Dianne, of Hartsville; her nieces and nephews, Chuck Northcutt and wife, Kathy, of Burlington, Lynn Northcutt of Johnson City, Tenn., John Wall II and Lisa Nobles and husband, Wade, all of Hartsville; Kimberly Brown and husband, Scott, of Charlotte, N.C., and Jimmy Wall of Alphretta, Ga.; her great-nephew, Hunter Nobles of Hartsville; and her loyal friend and companion, Mitzi the cat. She was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Graham Wall Jr.
