Robert G. Knox
Retired supervisor Carlisle Finishing Co.

Robert Gene (Bobby) Knox, 72, husband of Nellie Jo Keith Knox of 812 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Knox was born in Kelton Sept. 21, 1931, a son of the late James M. and Bessie Hodge Knox. Mr. Knox was a graduate of Jonesville High School and went on to attend Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and Newberry College. He was retired as a supervisor with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant, and retired as a manager with the S.C. Regional Housing Authority.

Mr. Knox was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served the church as a Lay Leader, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher and past president of the Men's Club and as Food Committee chairman. Mr. Knox was a Past Worthy Patron of Abe Wyman #264, a Royal Patron of Faith Court #21, a Master Mason of Mt. Joy Lodge, a Shriner and member of the York Rites. Mr. Knox was also a Farm Bureau Committee member, a member of the Union County Livestock Association and a pioneer ceramist for Union County and the State of South Carolina.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: four daughters, Genia Smith of Union, Robbi Poole and husband Rick of Union, Amy Knox of the home and Debra Williams and husband Rusty of West Columbia; three sons, Danny Knox of the home, James Keith Knox and wife Kathy of Eagleville, Tenn., and Robert Knox II and wife Jan of Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Edna Burgess and husband Maurice of Spartanburg, Betty Lawson of Spartanburg and Shirley White of Union; a brother, Fred Knox and wife Lou Jean of High Point, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Jami Trammell and husband Dennis, Timothy and Monica Vinson, Brian Williams, Mary Katherine, Victoria and Seth Knox, Cea and Burt Knox; three great-grandchildren; and special family friend, George Price of Cowpens.

He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Flora Dicken, Alfred and James Knox. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sam Knox. Burial will be in the Knox Family Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

Furman Robinson Sr.
Retired from Monarch Mill

Furman Robinson Sr., 90, of 101 Fairforest Apartments, Main Street, Union, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born Aug. 22, 1913 in Union County, he was the son of the late Sanford and Mary Woodson Robinson. (Roadman) as he was affectionately called, and very well known as, was a member of Woodson Chapel Baptist Church. He was a former member of Widow Son Lodge #34, and was a devoted member of St. Paul's Adult Day Care Center.

Mr. Robinson worked at Union Oil Mill and at the Milliken Monarch Plant where he retired after 45 years of service. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are two sons, Furman Robinson Jr. and Earl Robinson, both of Union; four daughters, Doris R. (Jackson) Rice and Betty R. (David) Jones, both of Union; Arrie F. Robinson of Cowpens and Effie R. Robinson, of Union; a sister-in-law, Florie G. Robinson of Union; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Woodson Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 525 Toluca St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence R. Wood Sr.
Owner of Briargate Business Services

COLUMBIA Funeral services for Clarence R. Wood Sr., 67, of Columbia will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at VFW Post 641 on 534 South Beltline Blvd., Columbia immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 641.

Mr. Wood died Monday, May 31, 2004. Born in Union, he was the son of the late James B. Wood and Maxine Hawkins Wood. Mr. Wood was the owner of Briargate Business Services. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Union.

Mr. Wood was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a life member of VFW Post 641 and served in the office of Sr. Vice Commander. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Judith Elaine Enlow Wood; sons, Clarence R. (Robbie) Wood, Michael A. (Tony) Wood and Wendell L. Wood and his wife Cynthia, all of Columbia; sisters, Jean Meyers and Mollie Wadford, both of Florence and a brother, Jimmy Wood and his wife Frances of Union and two grandchildren. Greenlawn Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Marguerite S. Worthy
Union County native

GAFFNEY Marguerite Sanders Worthy, 89, widow of James C. Worthy, formerly of 203 Edgewater Drive, Gaffney, died Monday, June 2, 2003 in Magnolia Place, Greenville. Mrs. Worthy was born in Union County, a daughter of the late Giles Sidney Sanders and Hattie Wright Sanders. She was a homemaker and member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Wayne H. Worthy of Simpsonville; a daughter, Mary Peeler of Greer; a brother, Dan Sanders of Union; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Worthy was predeceased by a son, Floyd M. Worthy, six sisters and four brothers. Visitation will be held following graveside services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Frederick Memorial Gardens. The family is at their respective homes.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 22 Tindall Ave., Greenville, S.C. 29605 or toe the charity of one's choice. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home of Gaffney has charge of arrangements.

Minnie Lee R. Cotton

Minnie Lee Rice Cotton died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Oakmont Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at 116 Rifle Range Road and at the home of her niece, 110 McLure St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Carrie Fincher

Carrie Fincher of 305 Old Buffalo Road, Union, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Gibson & Brown Funeral Home.

Louise J. Tankersley
Retired from Whitten Center

WHITMIRE Louise Jennings Tankersley, 81, formerly of Whitmire and the widow of Chester Tankersley, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Oakmont Nursing Home in Union. She was born in Newberry County and was a daughter of the late Fred and Lillie Mae Cook Jennings. She was retired from Whitten Center and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Maness and Elaine Gaffney, both of Greenwood; two brothers, Gene Jennings and Ernest Jennings, both of Whitmire; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m.at Friendship Baptist Church with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Friendship Baptist Church before the service from 1 until 3 p.m. on Friday. The family will be at the home of her brother, Gene Jennings, 78 Lowery St., Whitmire. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Tucker
CARLISLE

Robert E. Tucker, husband of Joslyn Tucker, of Labaw Road, Carlisle, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

George B. Lyles
Retired from Buffalo Mill

George B. Lyles of 221 Bird St., widower of Annie Gossett, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Lyles was born in Union County to the late Ben and Carrie Lyles, He was a retired textile worker from Buffalo Mill.

Surviving are a step-daughter, May Ruth Johnston of Metuchen N.J.; and a step- granddaughter reared in the home, Virginia Gardener. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gibson & Brown Chapel. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ms. Ohio Jeter, 406 Lakewood Drive. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Timothy L. Mills
Union County native

Timothy L. Mills, 42, of Downingtown, Pa. died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Mills was born in Union County on April 21, 1961, the son of Martha Mills and the late Louis Rice.

Surviving are a son, Saleen Mills and a daughter, Nakia Mills, both of Pennsylvania; a sister, Bridgett Smith and a brother, Charles Mills, both of Union, and a nephew, David Smith of Union. Viewing will be at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services and burial will be Monday in Downingtown, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Bridgett Smith, 115 Deerpoint Road. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Cecil O'Dell Sr.
World War II veteran

James Cecil O'Dell, 81, of 105 Reid St., husband of Jennie Viola Garner O'Dell, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 8:16 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mr. O'Dell was born in Lockhart on July 31, 1921, a son of the late Fred R. O'Dell and Lenora Dotson O'Dell. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, a former deacon and taught the E. E. Fowler Sunday School Class for a number of years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. O'Dell was a retired lieutenant colonel and past commander of 4th Battalion, 218th Infantry of the S.C. National Guard. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 22; member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge, the Hejaz Shrine Temple and a member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. O'Dell was retired superintendent of postal operations at the Union Post Office where he served for 40 years. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, James C. (Jim) O'Dell Jr., of Union; a special friend, Loretta M. Patrick of Union; a sister, Doris O. Howell of Pawley's Island; three brothers, Fred H. O'Dell, Jack C. O'Dell and Bill E. O'Dell, all of Union; two grandsons, Nathan B. and wife Mandi O'Dell and James Allen O'Dell, both of Florida; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan O'Dell and Alexis Woolen, both of Florida.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 105 Reid St. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund, Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home has charge of arrangements.
