Mr. McIver was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Darlington County, a son of the late Junious and Lila Mae Byrd McIver. He was educated in the public schools of the county.
He served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged on Aug. 23, 1941. He worked for several years as a mechanic with Cargill Company. Mr. McIver was a member of Centerville AME Church where he served in several capacities. He was the longtime sexton of the church's cemetery.
On June 14, 1952, he married
the former Mary Daniels and the love and devotion to each has lasted over five decades. 'Bo, ' as he was called throughout the community, was a loving and caring father, husband, and friend to many. He loved to hunt and fish and participate in any outdoor activity.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory and maintain the legacy of Mr. Howard William McIver are his wife of 53 years, Mary McIver of Hartsville; three daughters, Sonooby McIver and Rosalind Mason, both of Hartsville, and Lila Marsh of Florence; four sons, William McIver, Gregory McIver and Donald (Willie Mae) Daniels, all of Hartsville, and John (Maxine) Daniels of New York, N.Y.; four sisters, Bernestine Richardson of Charleston, Annie Mae Toney of Hartsville, Mary Sue Hudson of Darlington and Rosa Lee Bruce of New York, N.Y.; one brother, James Berry of New York, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
CECIL W. BOAN
Mr. Boan, who died Dec. 6, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late James S. and Connie Horne Boan. He was retired from Dedicated Fleet Trucking.
Surviving are daughters, Cecilia (Leigh Cindy) Freeman, Francis Boan, Hartsville; sisters, Lurene Gainey, Camden, Kathleen Tiller and Irene Gainey, Hartsville; brothers, Herbert Boan, Sumter, Rufus Boan, Hartsville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby (Polly) Boan and a son, Cecil (Bo) Boan, II.
CLARA L. CHAMBERS
Mrs. Chambers left this sweet, old world on Dec. 7, after a periods of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Claude C. and Gertrude Coleman Long and the wife of the late Ray Henson Chambers Sr., who died June 5, 1972. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Dye Chambers. She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, N.C., making her home on a hilltop overlooking the shores of beautiful Lake Chatuge and the Shooting Creek mountain range. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ledford's Chapel United Methodist Church in Hayesville, N.C.
Mrs. Chambers loved her cats and the wild birds she fed for many years just outside her living room window where she could watch them through the seasons. She enjoyed plants and flowers, always looking forward to the summer so she could get her hanging baskets filled with petunias and impatiens onto the front porch.
She will be remembered for her wit and sense of humor. A good listener with a flair for telling great stories, she always enjoyed her many friends and family, eagerly welcoming their phone calls and visits. She was an avid reader and passed along her love of books to her children and enjoyed giving books as gifts to her family and friends.
Surviving are two daughters, Lynne (Walt) Keiser of Fayetteville, Ga., and Dianne (Bill) Teague of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a son, Ray Henson (Jackie) Chambers Jr. of Gastonia, N.C.; a granddaughter, Tara Chambers (Van) Safriet of Irmo; two grandsons, Christopher Henson Keiser and Matthew Brittain Keiser, both of Fayetteville, Ga.; a great-grandson, Coleman Baxter Safriet of Irmo; three nieces, Deborah Kleineick of Kingsport, Tenn., and Lisa Chambers Burch and Stephanie Chambers, both of Hayesville; two nephews, Robert William Chambers Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jodie Michael Chambers of Hayesville; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Chambers Sr. of Kingsport, Tenn., and Larry (Joanne) Chambers of Hayesville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of Clara Long Chambers to the Moss Memorial Library, 26 Anderson St., Hayesville, NC 28904.
Pallbearers were Richard Burch, Bill Chambers, Jodie Michael Chambers, Jim Curtis, Ken Martin and John Rosenkranz. Honorary pallbearers were the compassionate nurses and other staff members at the Clay County Care Center, and the friends and care givers whose many kindnesses to Clara will always be remembered by the family.
ROBERT HAMMONDS SR.
Mr. Hammonds was born Jan. 26, 1921, to the late Ezekiel and Nassie Kelley Hammonds. He was the fifth of nine children. He was predeceased by five of his siblings. During the time he was growing up, black children attended schools organized and located in churches. He attended Wesley Chapel School where his family also attended church. In January of 1943, he left home and joined the United States Army and served his country honorably for three years. It was during this time that he met and later married
the former Johnnie Mae McGruder. They were united in marriage in 1946. To this union, seven children were born.
Mr. Hammonds worked as a truck driver at the Oil Mill in Darlington until his retirement. He traveled mostly in the states of Georgia and North and South Carolina.
On Jan. 30, 1981, Johnnie Mae, Mr. Hammonds' wife of 31 years, died. He continued to live his life as a single man, cooking, washing clothes, cleaning, grocery shopping, planting gardens, hunting, fishing and going to softball games. He continued to faithfully worship at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee for a number of years until his health began to decline. Mr. Hammonds openly and freely expressed his love and devotion to the Lord.
Cherishing his memory are seven children who love him dearly, LaMaris (Curtis) Eagleton, Yvette Pierce both of Florence, Veronica Hammonds of College Park, Ga., Robert (Freda) Hammonds of Durham, N.C., Chippetta Hammonds of Charlotte, N.C., CWO2 Nimrod (Lorraine) Hammonds of Leesburg, Ga., and Sonya Hammonds of Charleston; one brother, Charles (Doris) Hammonds of Darlington; two sisters, Julia (Robert) Ingram of Los Angeles, Calif., and Katie Foster of White Plains, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Lealer Hammonds; one aunt, Mary Kelley; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his dear cousins; other relatives and friends and his hunting companions and friends of many years, Charlie and Joe Plummer. He is also leaving behind a very dear and devoted companion, Modisteen Mack of Darlington.
KATHERINE BRUNSON
Mrs. Brunson died at her home Monday, Dec. 5. She was born in Conway, daughter of the late Paul and Sue Martin Quattlebaum. She was married
to the late James Phinney 'J. P.' Brunson Jr. Mrs. Brunson attended Queens College and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in architecture and art. She was an honorary member of Darlington Fireman Rescue Squad and a member of the Pilot Club. She was den mother for the cub scouts for years. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mrs. Brunson was a member of the Lawson-Ward Circle, the Women of the Church and for many years had worked with the children in the nursery.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James P. (Linda) Brunson III of Darlington and Charles Paul (Dianna) Brunson of Little River; grandson, James P. Brunson IV of Darlington; and step-grandchildren, Charlie Knotts and Deanna Byrd.
Mrs. Brunson was preceded in death by an infant son, Danny.

META ROBERTSON
Mrs. Robertson, widow of Eugene Robertson, died Friday, Dec. 2. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Aaron 'Shy' and Elmer Rogers Tyner. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was retired from Sonoco Products Co.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth 'B. J.' and Joseph Coughlin of Marietta, Ga., Bridget and Peter Beck of E. Haddam, Conn.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
DORIS W. LISTER
Mrs. Lister died Saturday, Dec. 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Vera King and Lucas F. Watford. A faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mrs. Lister was an active member of the choir, the Sowell-McIntosh Sunday School Class, and the Rosa Lee Circle. She also had a strong interest in mission work both locally and statewide. She has served as a member of the Pilot Club, People to People, the Soup Kitchen, and Guardian ad Litem. A graduate of Greenville School of Nursing, she continued her studies at Peabody College, as well as the universities of Minnesota, Harvard and Boston where she did doctoral work in psychiatric nursing. Prior to joining the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control as Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing, she served on the faculties of the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina. Mrs. Lister moved back to Hartsville upon her retirement in 1990.
She was predeceased by brothers, Furman, Ralph and Thomas Watford; sister, Miriam Watford Harvin.
Surviving siblings are sisters, Sara Francis Watford Hoffmeyer of Dalton, Ga., Connie Watford Ellis of Mullins, and brother, J. Dan Watford Sr. of Hartsville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews.

REX W. GIBSON
Mr. Gibson, widower of Anna Bell Lafferty Gibson, died Saturday, Dec. 3. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Hosea Crawford and Ennie Gandy Gibson. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was retired from farming.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Travis and Sara Gibson of Hartsville; Lynwood and Barbara Gibson of Columbia; sister, Penny Smith of Bishopville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
DOROTHY OWEN
Mrs. Owen, widow of Francis E. Owen, died Thursday, Dec. 1. She was born May 10, 1917, in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ernest K. Shickle and Clara Findley Shickle. She was a graduate of Martinsburg (W.Va.) and received a registered nurse's degree from West Baltimore General Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. Owen was a loyal Christian and a dedicated wife, mother and nurse, noted for her kind and gentle nature. As a member of the First Nazarene Church of Bradenton, she was active in the choir, the 'Living Christmas Tree, ' teaching and the Women's Ministry.
Mrs. Owen is survived by her son, David B. Owen of Tropicana Products, Bradenton; two daughters, Lynda O. Cole of Bradenton, Fla., Susan O . (Perry) Bell of Lamar; grandchildren, Christopher P. (Amy) Bell and Bryant Bell, all of Lamar; great-grandchild Brent Bell of Lamar; and foster grandchildren, Cassidy and McKayla of Bradenton; a brother, Robert (Dot) Shickle of Hedgeville, W. Va, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Donald and Harold Shickle.

ELMER A. MARTIN
Mr. Martin, of Dover, and a former resident of both Cleveland, Ohio, and Charleston, died Saturday, evening, Nov. 26, in Union Hospital, Dover. Born Sept. 17, 1914, in Cleveland, he was a son of the late Andrew and Susan Martin Elmer. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated as valedictorian of his class at East Technical High School. He went on to earn degrees from Fenn College, Cleveland State University and Case-Western Reserve University. He was a professional mechanical engineer for Bailey Metex, a division of Babcock & Wilcox, for 37 years.
Mr. Martin was a member of the New Philadelphia Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a former Presiding Overseer of Newburg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He very much enjoyed teaching people about the Bible.
He also held a professional membership in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, serving many years as treasurer.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine S. Martin of Cleveland, and Cheryl M. (Joseph) Coniglio of Dover; a son, David E. (Rosemary) Martin of Hartsville; two grandsons, David A. (Christine) Martin, and Ashley L.D. (Heather) Martin; two great-grandsons, Andrew Grayson Martin and Cameron Ashtin Martin; a sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Schuller of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Frieda Marie Martin, in l999; and by a sister, Elsie Yannie.

GWENDOLYN M. OLIVER
Mrs. Oliver was born in St. Joseph's Infirmary, in Atlanta, Ga., on March 27, 1908, to the late Essie Elizabeth and Carl Milton McKinnon, of Brunswick, Ga. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Hartsville.
She will be missed by a network of friends spanning several generations who revere her as the epitome of a true Southern lady with a sense of humor, a rapier wit, and a heart of gold. The twinkle in her eyes will never be forgotten.
She graduated from Agnes Scott College and the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, and took graduate classes in social work and education at George Peabody, USC, UNC, and William and Mary.
She taught school in Hickory, N.C., and in Johnston, S.C., did social work in the slums of Richmond by bus, and, at a time when there were no paved roads, she supervised WPA libraries throughout the entire Pee Dee area in a Model A Ford. Later, while working toward a degree in library science, she worked for the South Carolina State Library. She was a long term member of the Assembly, the Junior League Book Club, and Trinity Episcopal Church. In honor of her father and mother, she contributed substantial acreage leading to the creation of the Segars-McKinnon Heritage Trust on Black Creek in Hartsville.
She is survived by three sons, Sewall Kemble Oliver III, Russell Timothy Oliver and Charles McKinnon Oliver; by nine Oliver grandchildren, Kemble McKinnon, Robert Conniffe, Timothy Michael, Jessica Hardy (Goff) , Lyn Holmes, Elaine Venable, Victory Augustus, Christina Ogren, and Oleg Anders; and by five Oliver great-grandchildren, George Conniffe, Ellen Bennett, Susan McKinnon, Duncan Phineas and Quinn Delaney.
