WILLIE MAE STOKES
Mrs. Stokes was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Angus and Annie Bell Cassidy Gainey. She was a store manager of Larry's Department Store for many years. Mrs. Stokes was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. She was also involved in the Women's Federation and the Darlington County Home Demonstration.
Surviving are her husband, Loy Stokes of Darlington; two sons, James B. (Celia) Griggs of Murray, Ky., and Raleigh P. (Beverly) Griggs of Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Norma Jean 'Jeanie' (Hugh) Wilson of Beaufort, Etta (Marty) Milhoan of Lelia Lakes, Texas, 22 grandchildren, and a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Griggs and Frances Floyd; two brothers, Thomas A. Gainey and G.C. Gainey, and a sister, Margaret Osbourne.

CARSON LUTHER SR.
Mr. Luther was born Sep. 2, 1905, in Moore County, N.C., to Alice Dunlap Luther and Thomas Alexander Luther. The family moved to Hartsville, where his father was in the lumber business. After graduating from school, Mr. Luther went to work for a local pharmacy. He enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities at the local pharmacy so much that he went back to school and became a registered and licensed pharmacist. Mr. Luther went to work for the Parke-Davis Company as a national retail representative in 1927 and traveled the country introducing the new miracle drugs such as penicillin and polio vaccines to the medical community. Mr. Luther married
Ruby Eva Pennington of Hartsville, on Dec. 23, 1935. They moved to Atlanta, Ga., for two years and then settled in Macon, Ga., where they raised their family. Mr. Luther worked for the Parke-Davis Company for 45 years and earned his pharmacy licenses in South Carolina and Georgia. After retirement in 1970, he worked as a staff pharmacist at the Middle Georgia Hospital and assisted local pharmacies around town. He regularly attended pharmaceutical meetings and continuing education programs around the state of Georgia and maintained his license to practice pharmacy until the age of 96.
Mr. Luther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, Ga., the 49th president of the Baraca Sunday School class and a past deacon of the Church. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the Macon Touchdown Club, the Macon Middle Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, the Grand Jury Association and did volunteer work at various charities around town. He served every year as a Salvation Army Christmas kettle bell ringer until the age of 98. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina awarded Mr. Luther the title of Sublime Degree of Master Mason for his 60 years of faithful service to Masonry. He also participated in the National Health Institute centenarian study program as a way to help and understand the needs of fellow centenarians.
Survivors include a'son, William Carson Luther Jr.
and wife, Louise, of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Penny Luther Hewett and husband, Ron, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, William Carson Luther III of Atlanta, Ga., Ronald Winston Hewett Jr. and wife, Kim, of Nashville, Tenn., Ashley Hewett Potter and husband Freddy and Laura Pennington Hewett, all of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Carson Elizabeth Hewett, Winston Hewett, Trevey Hewett, all of Nashville, Tenn., Madison Potter and Grayson Potter, both of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Marjorie Luther Harley of Columbia, Mary Luther Hudson of Salisbury, N.C., Lilly Mae Luther Smith of Sumter, and Kate Luther Funkhouser of Bethesda, Md. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Ruby Pennington Luther; brothers, Walton Luther, Charles Luther, Russell Luther, all of Hartsville, and sister, Bessie Rogers of Sumter.
VADIE J. BLACKWELL
Mrs. Blackwell, widow of William Denny Blackwell, died Sunday, Jan. 29. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Essie Henderson Johnson. She was a member of the Clyde Church of God.
Surviving are her sister, Mary Lee Tidwell of Bethune; brother, the Rev. Bill Johnson of Hartsville; nephew and spouse, James 'Pee Wee' and Diane Johnson of Hartsville. She was predeceased by her sister, Ella Mae Munn; brothers, J. C. Johnson, Fred Johnson, Mortimon Johnson, Liston Johnson; and stepson, Gene Blackwell.
W.L. JORDAN
Mr. Jordan died Friday, Jan. 27, in a local hospital. He was born in Lamar, son of the late Marion J. and Belle Stuckey Jordan. He served his country in the United States Air Force until his retirement, and was a Vietnam veteran, also serving in Korea, Japan and Germany. Mr. Jordan was active in the DAV, VFW and the American Legion. He held an Associate's Degree from Florence-Darlington Technical College, was a member of Newman Swamp Southern Methodist Church and had recently attended Lamar Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Windham Jordan, a daughter, Joann Howard, three sons, Lt. Col. Jon (Andi) Jordan of Charleston, Justin (Elizabeth) Jordan of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jeffery (Cristy) Jordan of Cumming, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three sisters, Louise Bradshaw, Carol Jordan, Evelyn Parnell; and a brother, Marion Lewis Jordan.
Mr. Jordan was preceded in death by a brother, Junius Jordan, and two sisters, Ellen Jordan and Judy Larrymore.

JAMES LAMBERT SR.
Mr. Lambert, who died Jan. 27, was born in Darlington, a son of the late Rev. Clarence E. Lambert and Mildred Graham Lambert. He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Verlee Odom Lambert of Hartsville; son, James Edward Lambert Jr. of West Columbia; daughter, Sheree Joyce Giffin of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister, Marion Barrett of Disputanta, Va.; step-daughter, Janet Fish of Moncure, N.C.; step-son, Mike King of Hartsville; step-daughter-in-law, Cynde King, Hartsville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, David King.

Surviving are her husband, Randy Truett of Hartsville; her mother of Hartsville; two daughters, Amy Truett of Florence and Charlotte Adams of Hartsville; sisters, Eva Lyles of Myrtle Beach, Georgia Purviance and Lisa Matthews, both of Omaha, Neb., and Samatha Lyles of Darlington; brother, George Lyles of Hartsville and two grandchildren.
ROBERT NEWSOME
Surviving are his wife, Marie Moody Newsome of Beech Island; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Leon and Katherine Newsome of Jackson; sister, Hattie Newsome Stewart of Beech Island; brother and sister-in-law, Hugh and Margaret Newsome of Hartsville; grandchildren, Steven Newsome, Kimberly Mace, Kelly Dobson; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rex Newsome, Leslie Newsome, Don Newsome; sister, Penny Newsome Flemming.
LAURENCE HURSEY
Mr. Hursey died Monday, Jan. 23. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Ben W. and Marie Jordan Hursey. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher and BTU teacher. He was founder, owner and operator of Peoples Insurance Agency in Darlington and Hartsville for 30 years. He served in the Coast Guard, Army Transportation, and Merchant Marine and was part of the Normandy invasion. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 53, Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Hartsville Jaycees, and worked with the Boy Scouts for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Lela Dixon Hursey of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Hursey of Hartsville; daughter, Susan Evans of Darlington; sisters, Marion Kelley of Florence, Laura Howell of Darlington; brothers, Ben Hursey of Titusville, Fla., Ed Hursey of Darlington, Cliff Hursey of Florence; grandchildren, Alex Hursey, Christopher Parker, Haley Parker, Jennifer Parker. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Moody and Elsie Grace.
KATHERINE S. TILLER
Mrs. Tiller, widow of William Lavern Tiller Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 24. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Frank D. Sparrow Sr. and Bertha Dunn Sparrow. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, and was employed with Hartsville Manufacturing for 25 years.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin D. and Beverly Tiller of Coon Rapids, Minn., James Ronald Tiller of Hartsville, William L. and Brenda Tiller Jr. of Hartsville; sisters, Lula Hall and Frances S. O'Neal, both of Hartsville, Elizabeth Griggs of Kannapolis, N.C.; brother, Frank D. Sparrow Jr. of Hartsville; grandchildren, Wayne Tiller, Michael Tiller, Eddie Tiller, Phillip Tiller, Joy M. Tiller, and Lori A. Woodward; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her spouse W. Tiller Sr., her father Frank Sparrow Sr., and her mother Bertha Sparrow.
BARBARA BECKHAM
Mrs. Beckham died Sunday, Jan. 22, in a local hospital. She was born in Andrews, the daughter of the late Donald E. and Dorothy Bazemore Jackson. She worked with the Department of Social Services for 27 years until her retirement. Mrs. Beckham was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Ladies Auxiliary and was a prayer warrior. She will be remembered as an 'encourager' to many people.
Surviving are her husband, Michael C. Beckham of Darlington; two sons, John F. (Cheryl) Wenteler, Donnie G. (Sonia) Wenteler, all of Darlington; four grandchildren, Nicole Hatfield, Jenafer Wenteler, Christina Wenteler and Emily Wenteler; a brother, Earl (Gwen) Jackson of Florence; two nephews, Frank Jackson and Richard E. Jackson; and a niece, Christie Jackson.
Mrs. Beckham was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Jackson.

WILLIAM B. STARLING
Mr. Starling died Sunday, Jan. 22. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Levi and Frances O'Neil Starling Sr. He was employed with Klopman Mills in Society Hill, Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, N.C., and Superba Print Works in Mooresville until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of Jesus Life Ministries.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Bevan Starling of Landis, N.C.; daughters, Rhonda Denise Fleming of Kannapolis, N.C., Donna Marie Helms of China Grove, N.C., Rhonda Michelle Rainey of Salisbury, N.C., Kimberly Darnell Starling of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Geneva Brigman of Patrick, Virginia McIntyre of China Grove, N.C., Pearlie O'Neil of Society Hill, Olliemae Weatherford of Patrick, Evelyn Williams of Chesterfield. He was preceded in death by his son, Shawn P. 'Buck' Starling.
ROBBIE LEE ROSS
Mr. Ross was born Aug. 6, 1952, in Lydia, a son of the late Alice Ross Dukes. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and attended Butler High School.
He was a lifelong member of Mt. Tema Baptist Church. Mr. Ross worked for more than 19 years at Sonoco Products Company as a machine operator. He later worked for Jerry Kelly Farms as a machine operator. He worked there for 10 years until his health failed.
Robbie Lee had a passion for all kinds of motorcycles and cars. He enjoyed playing pool and was an excellent player. He was a kind-hearted, fun-loving man who loved his family. His presence from among us will surely be missed by family and friends alike.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory and carry on the legacy of Robbie Lee Ross include his wife, Carolyn Ross of New Haven, Conn.; three daughters, Wanda Rivers of Charlotte, N.C., Xyna Marcella Ross of Augusta, Ga., and Agee Roshanda Ross of Hartsville; one son, Tyrone Ross of Hartsville; four sisters, Sara (Elijah) McPhail, Annette Anderson, Elouise Ross Abraham all of New York, N.Y., and Shirley Coleman of Phillipsburg, N.J.; one aunt, Ruth Austin, and one uncle, Dynishie Johnson, both of Baltimore, Md.; special cousins, Thelma Price and Sharon Price both of Hartsville; other special friends, Jimmie Addison, John Dubose and Harry Lee Colclough, all of Hartsville; seven nieces; four nephews; four stepchildren; seven grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
