Ms. Hawkins died Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, at The Regional Medical Center. She was born in Kelleytown, a daughter of the late Ben and Edith Johnson Kelley. She was a retired administrative specialist from S.C.S.U. Ms. Hawkins was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dedie Hodges of Summerville and Mrs. John L. (Aimee) Godwin of Cameron; five grandchildren, David Roberts, Tiffany Powell, Rhett Hodges, Courtney Powell and John William Godwin.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Godwin, 8207 A Old State Rd., Cameron, SC 29030.

JEFFREY K. CADDELL
Mr. Caddell died Thursday, Jan. 19. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Willie Joe and the late Shelby Jean Starling Caddell. He served in the U. S. Air Force and was employed with Sonoco Products Co. in the paper mill. He coached the Kiwanis team in the Hartsville National League Baseball.
Surviving are his wife, Michelle Johnson Caddell of Hartsville; sons, Dillon Caddell and Caleb Caddell, both of Hartsville; father of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa Caddell and Nickey Simmons of Lamar, Tabetha Caddell and Tal Windham of Lamar; numerous aunts and uncles.
MARVIN WALTERS
Mr. Walters died Thursday, Jan. 19. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Ira and Annie Polson Walters. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie Freeman Walters of Society Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Teresa Walters, Dean and Donna Walters, all of Byrdtown, Wayne Walters of Society Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene Walters and Randy Weatherford of Society Hill, Wanda and Frankie Freeman of Hartsville; sister, Mildred Freeman of Johnsonville; special brother-in-law, Ronnie Freeman of Society Hill; best friends, Corbett and Eleanor Gandy of Darlington; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
BARNEY STOKES SR.
Mr. Stokes, who died Jan. 13, was born in Camden, a son of Elma Kennington Stokes and the late William C. Stokes. He was retired from Big Red Fork Lift Parts and was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Charleston.
Surviving are his mother of Camden; wife, Marie Adams Stokes of Hartsville; son, Barney M. Stokes Jr. of Lugoff; daughter, Ava L. Stokes of Hartsville; brothers: the Rev. Gene Stokes, Charles Stokes, Harold Stokes of Camden and James Stokes of Bishopville; sisters, Helen Walls of Camden and Karen Rhodes of Charleston.
DOMINICK P. BATALLER
Mr. Bataller, husband of Mary E. (Dinkelberger) Bataller, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, of natural causes at his residence. Born in Fairmont, W. Va., he was a son of the late John and Maria (Vilone) Bataller. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was employed for more than 35 years at Glidden Co. in Reading, working in production until his retirement. He was a graduate of Reading High School and was a life member of the Reading VFW and the Alsace Fire Company.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Debra L. (Bataller) Busch of Alsace Twp., Susan M. (Bataller) Snyder of Exeter Twp.; sons, Dominick L. Bataller of Hartsville, Scot A. Bataller of Reading; sisters, Rosalee A. (Bataller) Huber of Tampa, Fla., Dolores G. (Bataller) Natale of Mifflinburg, Pa.; brother, Johnnie J. Bataller of West Lawn, Pa.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
RAYMOND GAINEY
Mr. Gainey died Monday, Jan. 16. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Lois Atkinson Gainey and the late Raymond Ervin Gainey.
Surviving are his wife, Lisa Jenkins Gainey; daughters, Jessica Leigh Gainey and Kamryn Nicole Gainey; mother; sister, Lisa Gainey; brothers, Richard Gainey and Bill Gainey, all of Society Hill.
MICHAEL McLENDON
Mr. McLendon died Friday, Jan. 13. He was born in Silver Springs, Md., a son of Carol McLendon and Mary McLendon Dority. He was retired from Wellman Inc. and was a member of the Hartsville Advent Christian Church.
Surviving are his father of Hartsville; mother of Garden City; sons, Michael McLendon, Sr. of Camden, Matthew McLendon of Hartsville; daughters, Carrie and Myranda McLendon, of Camden, Megan Atkinson of Garden City; sister, Denise Locklear of Garden City; brother, Leo McLendon of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; special friend, Cindy Shumate, of Hartsville.
WILLIE T. BRISTER
Mr. Brister died Thursday, Jan. 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Thomas and Aileen Brown Brister. He received his education in the public schools in the area. He was also a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of New Hope Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Retha Mae Murphy Brister of McBee; six daughters, Melissa Rean (Dwayne) Brister, Judith Brister, Jeanette Brister, Willie Mae (David) Price and Sallie Ann (Sandy) Brister, all of McBee, and Florea Scott of Hartsville; six sons, Willie (Jo Ann) Brister Jr., James (Joann) Wesley Brister, John Wesley, Jennings (Patricia) Brister and Ronnie Lee (Tiffany) Brister, all of McBee, and Emanuel (Mary) Brister of Jefferson; 33 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and other close relatives.
ANNIE BELL ROGERS
Mrs. Rogers, widow of Kenneth Rogers, died Saturday, Jan. 14. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Corbett Truett and Lillie Tedder.
Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Louise Hall of Cassatt, Alfred Rogers and Randy Rogers, both of Oates; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Michael Best of Lydia, Vickie Mathis of Darlington, Brenda and Ricky Davis of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
WOODROW M. HALL
Mr. Hall died Saturday, Jan. 14. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Boyd M. and Cora Kirven Hall. Woodrow was a decorated World War II veteran who returned to his beloved Darlington County to farm and operate several businesses. He was owner and operator of Midway Tractor for 40 years. He and his partner, Harold Brasington, built and operated the Darlington International Dragway for 20 years. He was also a partner in the Hartsville-Darlington Speedway. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his son, Woody Hall of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Kelley, Debra and David Andrews, all of Hartsville; sister, Vivian Hall Howle; grandchildren, Todd Kelley, Jenny McInville, Bridgette Hall, Trey Hall, Barry Andrews, Brad Andrews; great-grandchildren, Josh Kelley, Casey Kelley, Cody Kelley, Makayla McInville, Andrew Mattox, Chase Hall, Tanner Hall, Carson Andrews; special friend and care giver, Verma Bostic. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ora Delle Pate Hall; brother, James P. Hall; sister, Frances Timmons.
CARROLL GRIGGS SR.
Mr. Griggs, widower of Mildred Outlaw Griggs, died Sunday, Jan. 15. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Ham Walter and Alma Adams Griggs. He was retired as owner and operator of Carroll Griggs Plumbing & Electrical. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the DAV.
Surviving are his son, Carroll 'Bubba' Griggs of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Wilson Bateman of Hartsville; sisters, Vista Morse of Tecumseh, Mich., Elizabeth Sauer of Monroe, Wis., Sarah 'Nellie' Braddock of Columbia; a brother, H.W. Griggs Jr.; grandchildren, Kay Moore Howle, Kathy Moore Hendrix; great-grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Stamey and Haley Kathlene Howle.
BLANCH PETERSON
Mrs. Peterson died Thursday, Jan. 12, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Hart and Hattie McKnight. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc.
Surviving are her husband, Blease Peterson of Lydia; two daughters, Inez (Calvin) McDowell of Lynchburg and Bertha (James) Peterson of Hartsville; a son, Isaac Peterson Sr. of Lydia; 14 grandchildren, Martha (Robert) McCall, Helen (Ronnie) Gilmore, David Mack, Richard (Tara) Mack, Diane Mack, Jimmy Peterson, Rebecca Peterson, Soloman Mack, Alice (Tracy) Rogers, Isaac (Redina) Peterson Jr., Angela Peterson, Samuel Mack, Katherine (Joe) Thomas and Harley 'Paul' (Sabrina) Peterson; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
JESSIE THOMAS HALL
Jessie M. Thomas Hall, better known as 'Bobbie Girl, ' was born in Hartsville, the daughter of Eddie Coker Thomas Sr. and the late Grace McFadden Thomas. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Butler High School in 1963. She was the Butler High School Homecoming Queen in 1962 and was 'Miss Butler' in 1963. She was elected 'Most Friendly' by her classmates during her senior year. She was the first female student to drive a school bus at Butler High School.
After graduation from high school, Mrs. Hall continued her education at Cortez Peters Business College in Washington, D.C., and at Howard University where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967. She then accepted a position with United Airlines in Los Angeles, Calif. She lived there for a short time before moving to Chicago, Ill., after receiving a promotion from United Airlines. She remained with the company as a loyal employee for more than 37 years. She retired in January, 2005.
Jessie was raised in a Christian home and was a former member of New Haven United Methodist Church. She received Christ as her personal savior at an early age.
Surviving to cherish Jessie's loving memory include her daughter, Brandi Daniels and Brandi's father, Paul Daniels; her father, Eddie Coker Thomas Sr. of Lydia; five sisters, Janie Thomas, Veronica Thomas, and Carolyn Thomas, all of Hartsville, Rosa (Melvin) Gerald of Darlington and Deborah Thomas of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, the Rev. Eddie (Corine) Thomas of Sumter, Frank (Barbara) Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., and Joseph (Dianne) Thomas of Meriden, Conn.; her mother-in-law, Ivan C. 'Bigmama' Daniels of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters-in-law, Alfrieda Morris, Ethel Arnita Daniels and Wilma Gray all of Chicago, Ill.; four brothers-in-law, Ivan D. Daniels, Nathan Daniels, John Daniels, and Vance Ketchens all of Chicago, Ill., other nieces, nephews, close relatives and very dear friends.
