Kathleen Elizabeth Sinclair Coleman, 74, of 860 W. Rushing Road, Register, Ga., widow of Roy L. (Cotton) Coleman, formerly of Union, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at 2:17 p.m. in the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Ga. Mrs. Coleman was born in Union on May 11, 1930, a daughter of the late Nim Joseph Sinclair Sr. and Lottie Noreen Melton Chalk Sinclair. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Coleman was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and Buffalo Plant.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary C. Morris and husband Bruce of Union and Kathy Eubanks and finance Tom Andrews of Register, Ga.; three grandchildren, Tracy W. Vermillion and husband Jon of Columbia, Troy Wright and wife Jennifer of Union and Beth Smith and fiancee Chris Oglesby of Statesboro, Ga.; two step-grandchildren, Kim Lawson and husband Scott of Pauline, Kelly Small and husband Michael of Union; three great-grandchildren, Kourtney Vermillion and Karson Vermillion, both of Columbia and Madison Oglesby of Statesboro, Ga.; four step-great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jordon Lawson of Pauline and Kannon and Kaleb Small of Union; three sisters, Helen Gregory and Edna Parks, both of Union, and Lottie Lipsey of Rocky Ford, Ga.,; two brothers, Charles E. Chalk of Huntington Beach, Calif and Harold Dean Sinclair of Union.
Mrs. Coleman was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, William Chalk, Nim Joseph (Poppy) Sinclair, James Sinclair and Rosadale Sinclair. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home of her daughter, Mary and Bruce Morris, 122 Sunset Road, Union. Minnie Lee Rice Cotton
Minnie Lee Rice Cotton died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Oakmont Nursing Home of Union. She was born Sept, 15, 1922 in Union County, a daughter of the late Rubin and Della Beaty Rice. She was a graduate of Sims High School.
Surviving are three sisters, Anna Simmons and Inez Sartor, both of Union and Fannie Mae Grey of Woodruff; nine nieces, Dorothy Coleman, Cynthia Wallace, Mamie Gore, Ruthie Rice, Elwillie Tucker, Gussie George, Willie Mae Garnett, Dorothy Douglas and Mammie Young. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Luke Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 116 Rife Range Road and at 110 McClure St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Fremont Dunn
Fremont Dunn died Friday, June 4, 2004, in Spartanburg. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.
Anne M. Gruber
JONESVILLE Anne McWhiter Gruber, 103, of 122 Hames Ave., Jonesville, widow of Marshall Gruber, died at her residence Tuesday, June, 1, 2004, at 7:50 p.m. Mrs. Gruber was born in Newberry on Feb. 28, 1901, a daughter of the late Christopher C. and Christinane Sligh McWhiter. She was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gruber was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Winthrop College and formerly taught public school in South Carolina. She was a retired clerical worker with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in Charleston.
Surviving are two nieces, Mary Hope of Savannah, Ga., and Polly Hall of Columbia; a niece by marriage, Barbara A. Lipscomb of Cleveland, Ohio, and a host of great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. Memorials may be made to the Jonesville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 787, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. A memorial service will be held in Jonesville later this summer. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Doris D. Young Hogue
WOODRUFF Doris D. (Momarsh) Young Hogue, 89, of 460 E. Georgia St., passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004. She was born in Whitmire and was a daughter of the late Bessie G. Davis and W. E. Davis. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. Mrs. Hogue was the beloved mother of two daughters, Carolyn Young Binkley of Woodruff and Jacqueline Young Hembree of Gastonia, N.C.
Also surviving are two sisters, Evelyn Davis McCormick of Gaffney and Kathleen Davis McCormick of Woodstock, Ga.; six grandchildren, Robin and Jeffrey Collier, Sheila Bogan, Gina Collier Ballard, Cathy Ledbetter and Danny Hembree. She was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred Gaffney, Miriam Knight and Juanita Davis, a brother, Bo Davis and a grandson, David Hembree.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel, Whitmire, with burial in Whitmire Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire. The family is at the home of Sheila Collier Bogan, Oakland Road, Union. Gray Funeral Home, Whitmire.
Bobby Calvin McCain
GASTONIA, N.C. Bobby Calvin McCain, 49, of 4312 Hickory Hollow Road, Gastonia, died June 2, 2004 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, N.C. A native of Lancaster, he was the son of the late Robert Calvin McCain, who attended Lancaster County Schools and was a graduate of Buford High School and the University of S.C. at Columbia, class of 1981. He worked for Anchor-Continental in Columbia, Easco Hand Tools and China Grove Textiles in Gastonia, N.C. and most recently had been employed by Beacon Manufacturing Co. Charlotte; where he was the systems analyst / information technology specialist for five years.
A vibrant member and pillar in his church at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Gastonia; Bobby was the current President of the Lutheran Men in Mission, current middle school youth advisor, former senior high advisor, a Sunday School teacher, usher, vacation bible school leader, and served on the church council. He was an avid gardener and woodworker, an active fitness buff with the Morning Stowe YMCA group, as well as an Eagle Scout and assisted with his daughter's Girl Scout activities.
Survivors include his wife, Beth McCain of Gastonia, N.C.; daughters, Brandy Elizabeth McCain and Brianne Nicole McCain of the home; mother, Helen Neal McCain of Lancaster; brother and sister-in-law, Billy Neal and Candace McCain of Union; sister and brother-in-law, Maryann M. and Wayne Willis of Lancaster; father & mother-in-law, Larry and Joyce Goelz of Charlotte, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Jim DuMond at 11 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Committal service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Unity A.R.P. Church Cemetery, Lancaster. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 tonight at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia (1-800-217-9901). In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the McCain Children Educational Fund, C/O First Gaston Bank Ñ Mia Leming, P.O. Box 1478, Gastonia, N.C. 28053-1478 or to the Bobby McCain Memorial Camp Fund, C/O Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1915 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia, N.C. 28054. Robert E. Tucker
CARLISLE Robert E. Tucker, 57, husband of Joslyn R. Tucker of 569 Labaw Road, Carlisle, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Tucker was born in Union County Dec. 9, 1946, a son of Lee Ethel Hodges Tucker and the late Henry Tucker. He was a Steel Foundry employee.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Robert J. H. Tucker of Carlisle; a daughter, Alyce S. (Bobby) Wallington of Union; five brothers, James (Dorothy) Tucker, John Henry Tucker and Albert Tucker, all of Carlisle, Roosevelt Tucker and Petties Tucker, both of Union; six sisters, Rubye Tucker, Betty (Thomas) Stone, Judy Tucker, Ethel (Leon) Byrd, all of Carlisle, Marilyn Tucker of Newberry and Geraldine Black of Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Jamal, Taylor and Alexis Wallington.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke AME Zion Church in Carlisle by the Rev. James Lyles. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Jessie Fincher Wallace
Jessie McCluney Fincher Wallace, 95, of 382 Bridge Creed Road, Tiger, Ga., widow of Robert Wallace, died Friday morning, June 4, 2004, at Traces of tiger Retirement Center. Mrs. Wallace was born in Lockhart on June 22, 1908, a daughter of the late Ira and Catherine Quinton McCluney. She was a former member of First Baptist Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Union. Mrs. Wallace was a graduate of Lockhart High School and Charlotte Business College and was retired from the Union County Health Department. She formerly owned and operated Fincher's Clothing Store in Union. Mrs. Wallace was first married to the late Furman Fincher.
Surviving are three nieces, Annette Welch and husband Bobby of Dillard, Ga., Gayle Taylor of Hollywood, Ga., and Lynn Shedd of Clarksville, Ga.; a great-niece, Kim Carpenter of Dillard, Ga., and a great-nephew, Andrew Welch of Dillard, Ga. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Union Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Union Memorial Gardens immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Harold W. Charles
CONWAY Ñ Harold Weston Charles, 79, of Pauley Swamp Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Conway Medical Center. Mr. Charles was born in Union, a son of the late Wallace Little and Ella Wilbanks Charles. He was a member of Dutch Fork Baptist Church in Columbia and attended Pauley Swamp Baptist Church. Mr. Charles was a life member of Union Lodge #1321, Fraternal Order of the Elks; American Legion Post #0006; Life member of the 75th Division of Veterans Association, Inc. and a member of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
He served his country as a member of the 75th Infantry Division in the European Theater during WWII and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Charles was a graduate of Union High School and Wofford College where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He retired as a Systems Analyst from Burroughs Corp. in 1984 after many years service.
Mr. Charles was predeceased by his first wife, Lillian Wood Charles; a daughter, Franese Jean Charles and a brother, John Wallace (Jack) Charles. Surviving are his wife, Dolores Beverly Charles of Conway; two sons, Fritz W. Charles of Bremmerton, Wash., and Christopher J. Charles and his wife, Jennifer, of Columbia; and a granddaughter, Jessica Charles of Columbia.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with the Rev. Terry Grainger officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Memorial Gardens in Union. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Memorials may be sent to Pauley Swamp Baptist Church, 7480 Pauley Swamp Road, Conway, S.C. 29527.
Shirley Land
Shirley Land of Santuc Drive, Santuc Community, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Whitney Funeral Home. Timothy L. Mills (Ameen) Union native Timothy L. Mills (Ameen), 42, of Downingtown, Pa., died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born in Union County on April 21, 1961, the son of Martha Mills and the late Louis Rice and Mabel Biddle, a special mother.
Surviving are a son, Saleem Mills and a daughter, Nakita Mills, both of Pennsylvania; sisters, Bridgett Smith and Patricia Davis, both of Union; a brother, Charles Mills of Union; a nephew, David Smith of Union; and a special friend, Jessie Eaton of Pennsylvania. Viewing will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today. Funeral services and burial will be held Monday in Downingtown, Pa.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Bridgett Smith, 115 Deerpoint Road. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James Cecil O'Dell Sr.
James Cecil O'Dell, 81, of 105 Reid Street, husband of Jennie Viola Garner O'Dell, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 8:16 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mr. O'Dell was born in Lockhart on July 31, 1921, a son of the late Fred R. O'Dell and Lenora Dotson O'Dell. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, a former deacon and taught the E.E. Fowler Sunday School Class for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. O'Dell was a retired lieutenant colonel and past commander of 4th Battalion, 218th Infantry of the S.C. National Guard. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 22; member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge, the Hejaz Shrine Temple and a member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. O'Dell was retired superintendent of postal operations at the Union Post Office where he served for 40 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, James C. (Jim) O'Dell Jr., of Union; a special friend, Loretta M. Patrick of Union; a sister, Doris O. Howell of Pawley's Island; three brothers, Fred H. O'Dell, Jack C. O'Dell and Bill E. O'Dell, all of Union; two grandsons, Nathan B. and wife Mandi O'Dell and James Allen O'Dell, both of Florida; two great-grandchildren, Ethan O'Dell and Alexis Woolen, both of Florida.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the E.E. Fowler Sunday School Class, past and present Union postal employees; retired members of the S.C. National Guard, Union unit; the Fred Foster family and Joe Moore.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 105 Reid Street. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund, Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home has charge of arrangements.
