Mr. Pearce died Monday, Dec. 26. Born in Mineola Long Island, N.Y., he was a son of Mary Hoffman Pearce and the late Fredrick Stephen Pearce Jr. He served in the United States Navy, serving seven years in the United States Nuclear Submarine Services. He was retired from Progress Energy. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Hartsville Moose Lodge No. 1770 and the Woodmen of the World.
Surviving are his wife, Rhonda Parker Pearce of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Brantley E. and Stephney Norris of Hartsville, Bradley P. and Casey F. Norris of Florence; mother of Silver Springs, Md.; sister, Mary Outman of Damascus, Md.; granddaughter, Charley Grace Norris of Hartsville; several nieces and nephews.
DORIS L. BAKER
Mrs. Baker died Saturday, Dec. 24, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington, daughter of the late Clyde Hewitt and Emmie Swann Lofton. She was a waitress and a housewife. Mrs. Baker was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Cindy B. Young and Julia B. Courtney, both of Darlington; grandchildren, Trey (Tanja) Hall, Bridgette Hall, Lindsey (Brent) June, Dale Baker, Blake Courtney; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty L. Boan of Darlington; two brothers, Hugh Lofton of Sumter and Don Lofton of Tacoma, Wash., and special friends, the Bazen Sisters.
Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by a son, Timothy E. Baker, brother, J.C. Lofton, and two sisters, Virginia 'Pee Wee' Baker and Frances L. Mears.
ODESSA CARTER
Mrs. Carter, widow of Milford E. Carter, died Saturday, Dec. 24. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Leatha Allen Porter. She was a graduate of the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing and taught at Greenville General Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Greenville Technical College and TriCounty Technical College. She volunteered at the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and the Clemson Downs Health Care Center. She was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church and the Naomi-Rebecca Circle.
Surviving are her daughter, Jeannie Carter Wilkerson of Hartsville; daughter-in-law, Sherry Carter of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; son-in-law, Mac McCrary of Clemson; grandchildren and spouses, Kerri Carter (Jim) Porter, Dan (Holly) Carter, Carter (Jenny) McCrary, Drew Wilkerson, Billye McCrary; special friend, Allen K. Wood.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Chip Carter and Eugene Carter, daughter, Thea McCrary, and son-in-law, Mike Wilkerson.
DELORES B. GRIGGS
Mrs. Griggs died Thursday, Dec. 22. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Esther Lee Gainey Bochette.
Surviving are her husband, Calvin M. Griggs Sr. of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Calvin M. and Robin Griggs Jr. of Hartsville; sister, Irene Morrison of Myrtle Beach; nieces, Audrey and Crystal; granddaughter, Jessica Griggs; great-granddaughter, McKenzie 'Mackie' Peavey.
GORDON FITTS
Mr. Fitts died Tuesday, Dec. 20. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late A. C. and Esther David Fitts. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and lettered in the band playing the trumpet. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and was retired as a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was a past president of the Lion's Club of Brandon, Fla., a past deacon of the First Baptist Church of Brandon, and a member of St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church of Pawleys Island. He was retired as advertising manager for Winn Dixie after 44 years of service and was a past president of the West Coast Chapter Winn Dixie Alumni.
Surviving are his wife, Edith Biggs Fitts of Pawleys Island; daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl and Norman Will Smith Jr. of Vero Beach, Fla., Michele Fitts of Gahanna, Ohio; granddaughters, Kellee' DiMenna Baker, Ashley McLaurin Smith and Mandi Elizabeth DiMenna.
HELEN RODEFER
Mrs. Rodefer died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005. Born in Hamlet, N.C., she was a daughter of the late John Walker and Sallie Griggs Turnage. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church, Love and Labor Sunday School Class, the Sophia Nichols II Circle and Antioch Garden Club. She was a caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William Ben Rodefer; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Charlie Sams, Denise and Mike Tyner, all of Hartsville; granddaughters, Emily Tyner and Erica Tyner. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Wolfe and brothers, Bud Turnage and Howard Turnage.

Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Peter M. and Mamie V. O'Neal Gainey. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Andrews Gainey of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, James Huey Jr. and Nora Gainey of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Lynn and Chip Yarborough Jr. of Hartsville, sisters, Ruby Dampier of Hartsville, Beatrice Tobias of Darlington, Lib Langbehn of Miami, Fla.; brothers, Elvis Gainey of Hartsville, Garvis Gainey of Miami, Fla., Ronnie Gainey of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brooke Amerson, Kristen Gainey, Bailey Amerson.
ALICE F. COSTELLO
The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 p at the funeral home.
Mrs. Costello was born in Asheville, N.C., daughter of the late Ben and Roberta O'Neal. She was a housewife and was an active member of Women of the Moose Lodge 1753. She was the Star Recorder, the highest position of the Lodge. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are three sons, Richard (Bonnie) Sweat of Colorado Springs, Colo., Danny Ray (Mae) Sweat and John C. (Pamela) Sweat, both of Darlington; three daughters, Bobbie (Baron) Blackmon, Patsy (Carroll) Boswell and Betty Hodge, all of Darlington; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; also, one sister, Elizabeth Slimmer.
Mrs. Costello was preceded in death by a grandchild, Shanise Warren, and two daughters, Judy Faye Sweat and Annette Warren.

BETTY STOKES
Mrs. Stokes died Monday, May 15. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Warren Benjamin and Annie McDonald Matheus. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Surfside Beach. She was the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce Merchant of the Year in 1976 (Freeman & Smith) and chairperson of the Merchants Division in 1977. She was Civitan of the Year in 1985 and Civitan VSP of the Year in 1986.
Surviving are her husband, Leon Stokes of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Kirkley Miller and James Miller of Glen Burnie, Md., June Stokes Myers and Stanley Myers of Hartsville, Lou Ann Stokes Fishbeck and Gerry Fishbeck of Spartanburg, Debbie Stokes Miller of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jack Thetford of Azle, Texas; grandchildren, David Miller, Lisa Miller, Angela Holland, Lane Fishbeck, Alicia Ann Fishbeck, Barry Peavy, Chris Stevens, Eddie Stevens; three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mertis (Mutt) Kirkley; sisters Joyce Cunningham and Loyce Smith; brother, Darris Matheus.
DORIS BANTA
Mrs. Banta, widow of Charles Banta, died Monday, May 15. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Cottie Woodham McKenzie. She was a retired school teacher with more than 30 years of service and was a charter member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1656.
Surviving are her sister, Zena Josey of Darlington; nephew and niece-in-law, Terry and Vickie Josey of Darlington; grandnephew, Stephen Josey of Darlington.
L.G. DUCKWORTH
Mr. Duckworth, widower of Rheba R. Duckworth, passed away May 10, at Laurel Hill Living Center. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Samuel Clyde Duckworth and Dora Nations Duckworth. He was a retired engineer and a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Belinda Copeland of Hartsville; grandchildren, Ashley Burchfield and husband Charlie of Hartsville, Jenifer Duckworth Copeland of Rock Hill; great-grandson, Toby Burchfield; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruby and Earl Brown of Six Mile and his companion Delila Meece of Pickens.
Memorials may be made to Crescent Hill Baptist Church Sound System Fund, 115 Crescent Hill Drive, Pickens, SC 29671.

LILLIAN T. JACKSON
Mrs. Jackson was the second child born to Pink and Geneva Davis Jackson. She was born on Sept. 20, 1920, and died on May 12 at her residence in Hartsville.
She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Mayo High School in Darlington, where she was in the top five of her class. She furthered her education at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, where she received her bachelors and masters degrees.
After graduation from college she began work in her life's passion, which was teaching. She began her teaching career at Robinson Elementary School in Society Hill. She later worked at Cain Elementary School in Darlington. Years later she taught at South Side Elementary School in Hartsville. She ended her 41 years of service at West Hartsville Elementary School in Hartsville. She inspired her nieces, nephews, and other young people she mentored to further their education.
Ms. Jackson was affiliated with many organizations. She was a member of the DCEA, the SCEA, the NEA and the ACT.
She also loved gardening and growing plants. She spent many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. She always had a lovely yard that she took great pride in. She also had superb oratorical skills and won many accolades. She also loved to read. Ms. Jackson was a lifetime member of St. John United Methodist Church.
She leaves to cherish as well as carry on her legacy three sisters, Darcus (Warren) Barber of Baltimore Md., Elizabeth (the late Wesley) Woodham of Hartsville, Willie Mae (John T.) James of Gastonia, N.C.; one brother, Pink (Elizabeth) Jackson of Hartsville, four nephews Alonzo Pink (Anita) Jackson of Shreveport La., Michael (Lisa) Woodham of Florence, Tyrone (Lisa) James of Gastonia, N.C., and Warren (Cassandra) Barber of Baltimore Md.; seven nieces Barbara White-Pauley and Eunice Evonne Jackson, both of Hartsville, Gwendolyn Barber of Baltimore, Md., Joyce B. (Donald) Debnam of Baltimore, Md., Deborah Barbara of Baltimore, Md., and Wanda B. (Paul) Johnson of Baltimore Md.; six grand nieces; three grand nephews; one aunt, Mrs. Sadie Davis of Florence; and a host of great grandnieces and nephews, cousins and very dear friends along with a devoted caretaker, Ronnie H. Stevenson of Hartsville.
