GWENDOLYN HEATLEY
Ms. Heatley entered the world on March 8, 1937, with a squeal that announced to everyone near that she had arrived and would have many things to say. Mrs. Heatley was the first daughter born to Benjamin and Annie Elizabeth Heatley, who cherished her arrival and spoiled her during their lifetime. Her parents, Benjamin and Annie, are both deceased. Ms. Heatley spent her early years in Hartsville. She attended and graduated from Butler High School in 1954 where she challenged her teachers, excelled in music and sports and played guard on the basketball team. Ms. Streeter, choir director, was able to help her develop a love for music while tempering her high enthusiasm for life.
Ms. Heatley moved to New York after high school and enjoyed living in the city for many years. A career as an insurance underwriter was started in 1974 in New York City at Metropolitan Life Insurance. Eventually she moved to Johnstown, Penn., to advance in the company and enjoyed living in the north central United States until retirement in 1991. Retirement meant that Hartsville was the only place for Gwen, who moved home immediately. There, she picked up and renewed relationships with family, friends and began involvement in the community.
She loved many things, clothes, food, music, and she definitely loved sports as well as Hartsville and her family. One of the things that people will remember about her was that she spoke truth without preamble or interpretation. However, she was as devoted to truth as she was to keeping her word and living up to whatever commitment made to anyone. If Gwen said it was to be done, it would happen.
Ms. Heatley leaves to continue in her footsteps four brothers, Dr. Alvin (Dorothy) Heatley, Thomas Heatley and Henry Stuckey, all of Hartsville, Eugene (Early) Stuckey of Anderson; three sisters Diane Heatley Cramer of New York City, Juanita Heatley of Washington, D.C., and Jeanine Heatley of Hartsville; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
