DAVID H. GARREN
SPARTANBURG - Funeral services for David Howard Garren, 82, will be held Thursday, March 30, 2006, at 3 p.m. in Davis Chapel at First Baptist Church, Spartanburg, with the Rev. Sal Barone and Bill Adams officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2 p.m. in the parlor. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, directed by Lanford-Dunbar Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mr. Garren, husband of Helen Boggs Garren, died Monday, March 27, at Park Place.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1923, in Greenville, the son of the late D. H. and Ophelia Garren. Mr. Garren was a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in mechanical engineering and retired from Lockwood Greene. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Spartanburg, for 45 years.

Mr. Garren is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Boggs Garren, of the home; two daughters, Kim Stepp and husband Ronald of Boiling Springs and Terrie Reames and husband Spann of Hartsville; a foster son, Walter Miller and wife Nancy of Roebuck; six grandchildren, Edward Reames, Ashley Reames, Holli Crabtree, Stefanie Suddeth, Courtney Stepp, Jane and Jessica Miller; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael David Garren.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Hunter, Johnny Boggs, Daniel Suddeth, George Mahaffey, Donald Stepp, David Harper, Gregg Boggs, and Jimmy Cole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in remembrance of Mr. Garren may be made to the Alzeheimer's Association, 110 S. Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.

Mr. Garren was a loving husband and father and will be missed, but we know he is now at peace.

RUBY B. ODOM
DARLINGTON - A memorial service for Ruby Bryant Odom, 93, was conducted by the Rev. Tim Coker in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, on Sunday, March 26, 2006, at 3 p.m. Mrs. Odom died Wednesday, March 22. In her giving spirit, she donated her body to medical research.

She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late William Goodson Bryant and Bonnie Agnes Weatherford Bryant.

She was the widow of Albert Bernice Odom. She retired as a practical nurse and was a member of Central Baptist Church. In her later years, Mrs. Odom enjoyed sitting on the front porch of her Reservoir Street home, enjoying the visits of many friends and passersby.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

ELEANOR A. SMITH
Funeral services for Eleanor Atkins Smith, 89, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tony Hemphill, Mark Bowers and Scott Brown officiated, with burial at 1 p.m. Monday, March 27, in Resthaven cemetery, Clarksville, Tenn. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Smith, widow of Fred. W. Smith, died Thursday, March 23. Born in Indian Mound, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Lena Byrd Atkins.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Frieda and Jess Stewart of Hartsville, Wilma and John VanBuskirk of Nantucket, Mass.; brothers, Gene Atkins of Louisville, Ky., Kenneth Atkins of Dickson, Tenn.; granddaughter and spouse, Paige and Albert Everson of Cary, N.C.; great-grandsons, Jared Everson and Zachary Everson.

BO CHITTY
Graveside services for Floyd C. 'Bo' Chitty, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 29, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Tony Medlin will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

KIRK A. STEPHENS
Services for Kirk Allen Stephens, 42, were held Sunday, March 26, 2006, at 3 p.m. in the Norton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Westview Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Stephens, who died Thursday, March 24, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late John Allen and Mildred Johnson Stephens.

Surviving are his wife, Shelia Teal Stephens of Patrick; sons, John Carl and Donald Stephens of Patrick; sister, Lisa Gardner of Hartsville.

W. J. SIMS
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for William J. 'W.J.' Sims, 75, were held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Central Baptist Church, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Sims died Thursday, March 16, at his residence. He was born in Camden, son of the late Pressley Vernon and Wilma Rhodes Sims. W.J. worked for Dixie Cup for 41 years until his retirement. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman who loved the Lord, his family, friends and his church. Mr. Sims was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Graham Sims of the home; a daughter, Belinda Sims (Tommie) Turner of Darlington; a granddaughter, Shannon Melissa Davis of Darlington; a step-grandson, Christopher Turner; three brothers, Fred J. (Mollie) Sims of Chesapeake, Va., Robert Edward (Leola) Sims of Hartsville, James Marion (Sheila) Sims of Darlington; two sisters, Lillian S. Williams of Florida, Vera S. (Henry) Strickland of Darlington.

Mr. Sims was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Eugene Sims, and five sisters, Nell S. Young, Margaret S. Koon, Macie S. Witherspoon, Mary S. Bailey and Sarah S. Poe.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.

W.G. HALL
Funeral services for W.G. (Petey) Hall, 48, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, in the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. The Revs. Ronnie Holland and Danny Winburn will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Hall died Tuesday, March 21. He was born in Florence, a son of Bobby G. and Louise Broome Hall. He was a hair stylist in Columbia and Camden.

Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; brothers, Ronnie (Bridget) Hall, Scott (Debbie) Hall, of Hartsville; sister, Cindy (Carroll) Easterling of Conway; several nieces and nephews.

JUANITA McELVEEN
Funeral services for Juanita O'Neal McElveen, 75, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 24, 2006, at Bible Baptist Church. The Rev. Carroll Hall will officiate, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bible Baptist Church, 2137 Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. McElveen, widower of James H. 'Jim' McElveen, died Tuesday, March 21. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Leslie William and Vivian Johnson O'Neal. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church of Hartsville, and retired from Hartsville Manufacturing with 31 years of service. She enjoyed working as a volunteer member of the Council on Aging and with the Alzheimer's Respite Group at the Hartsville site.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Terri McElveen of Darlington, James and Bonnie McElveen of Hartsville, Wayne and Hattie McElveen of Hartsville, Steve and Kathie McElveen of Garden City, Harold and Alice McElveen of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and John Barker of Hartsville, Eloise and Larry Edens of Charleston; brothers and sister-in-law, Cecil O'Neal of Hartsville, Alfred 'Sweet Willie' O'Neal of Hartsville, Leslie 'Shorty' and Donna O'Neal of Rock Hill; special granddaughters and grandson-in-law, whom she raised, Brandy Nichole 'Nikki' McElveen of Hartsville, Shannon and Steve McBride of Tampa, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Claude O'Neal, Dewey O'Neal, Graham O'Neal, David O'Neal.

It is with sincere gratitude that the family would like to give special acknowledgement to Pat Williams, Sherry Tyner, Geraldine Bacote, Dr. T. J. Bell and staff, and McLeod Hospice.

ETHEL MAE TADLOCK
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Ethel Mae Wallace Tadlock, 95, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, in the Church of God of Prophecy, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Tadlock died Monday, March 20. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Dora Weatherford Wallace. She was employed for a number of years by Coleman-Airmar Hospital and as a private nurse. Mrs. Tadlock was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church at an early age and later attended the Church of God of Prophecy.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Tadlock; two sons, Carl 'Junior' Tadlock Jr. and Marshall H. Tadlock, and one daughter, Sarah E. Tadlock Hendrix.

Survivors include four sons, Edward 'Buddy' Tadlock, Charlie 'Baybye' Tadlock and Dewey Tadlock, all of Darlington, and Grady Tadlock of Bennettsville; two daughters, Dora Lee Cooper of Charleston and Betty Anderson of Kenewick, Wash.; 29 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

JAMES H. GASKINS
JEFFERSON - Funeral services for James Henry Gaskins, 81, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Mt. Elon United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Gaskins died Tuesday, March 21, at Carolina Pines Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Early and Marilla McCaskill Gaskins. He received his education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Mt. Elon United Methodist Church. Mr. Gaskins was also a retired employee of the Department of Transportation and a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Mae Frances Gaskins of Jefferson; four daughters, Brenda (Coyte Jr.) King, Linda Gaskins and Charlene Gaskins, all of Jefferson, Patricia Gaskins of Charlotte, N.C.; five sons, Pete (Linda) Gaskins of Jersey City, N.J., Timothy (Mary) Gaskins, Lonnie (Sylvia) Gaskins, Christopher Gaskins and Terry Gaskins, all of Jefferson; one brother, George Gaskins of Monroe, N.C.; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

SUSIE E. REID
Mrs. Susie E. Reid, formally of 905 Robinson St., Hartsville, died on Wednesday, March 22, at Oak Haven Nursing Facility in Darlington. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

DOROTHY G. SOWELL
Funeral services for Dorothy Goodman Sowell were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Mt. Calvary Holiness Church in the Dovesville Community. The burial followed in the Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Pastor Jessie M. Gandy officiated the service.

Mrs. Sowell was born in Hartsville, on Aug. 5, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Betsy and Ludd Goodman. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 15, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville after an illness. She grew up in Darlington County, where she also received her formal education in the public schools. At an early age she was converted and baptized. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Holiness Church.

Mrs. Sowell was married to the late John L. Sowell. This union brought four children. One daughter, Dorothy Sowell, preceded her in death. Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of our mother, but we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God. We must not grieve at losing her temporarily but thank God for the time shared with her.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are three children, Jonas (Bessie) Sowell of the home, Bessie (James) Williams of New Haven, Conn., and James (Geraldine) Sowell of Gatesville, N.C.; one sister, Annie Mae Scott of Hartsville; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

MARY ATKINSON
Funeral services for Mary Streett Atkinson, 86, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Revs. Wayne Cash and Jackie Hinson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, March 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge, 3901 W. Bobo Newsome Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Atkinson, widow of William Ellie Atkinson, died Monday, March 20. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Grayson and Mattie Williamson Streett. She was a very active charter member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and served the Lord with gladness.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William E. 'Bucky' and Faye Atkinson of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Nelle and Buddy Athouguia of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters, Margaret S. Flowers, Leona Lee and Betty Warren, all of Darlington; grandchildren, Angie Kennedy, Woody Atkinson, Tony Athouguia; great-grandchildren, Dustin Kennedy, Shelby Athouguia, Austin Athouguia, Cole Athouguia, Gabrielle Athouguia, Ryanne Atkinson, Quinci Atkinson, Will Atkinson, Hailey Moore, Tyler Athouguia, Baker Athouguia. She was preceded in death by her grandchild, Shawn Athouguia.

JAMES GASKINS
JEFFERSON - James Gaskins, 81, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

GAY NELL MURRAY
Funeral services for Gay Nell Marshall Murray, 73, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tommy Browne will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, March 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Murray, widower of William Riley 'W.R.' Murray, died Tuesday, March 21. Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Evans Eugene and Annie Ard Marshall.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Jimmy Tart of Dunn, N.C., Margaret Ann Newland of Hartsville, Madaline and Bobby Braxton of Alcolu; daughter-in-law, Lisa Murray of Hartsville; sisters, Harry Dell McNinch and Georgia Mae Jackson, both of Hartsville, Dorothy Ann Harbison of Cottageville; brother, William E. Marshall of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her son, Riley Eugene Murray.
