Roy F. Auten
World War II veteran

CALHOUN FALLS Roy Franklin Auten, 78, of 518 Darlington St., Calhoun Falls, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at his residence after a two-year battle with cancer. Mr. Auten was born in Concord, N.C., a son of the late William Clyde and Rilla Burris Auten.

He was retired from Westpoint Stevens in Calhoun Falls after 40 years of service. Before coming to Calhoun Falls he worked for three years at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, N.C. After retiring in 1987, he worked part time at Ingles in Abbeville for four years. he was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Campaign. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Ayers Auten of the home; two sons, David Lamar Auten of Ware Shoals, and Roy Franklin (Frankie) Auten II of Calhoun Falls; four daughters, Janice Boggs of Calhoun Falls, Jennie Yon of Whitmire, Martha Scully of Belton and Louise Haggerty of Lexington; a brother, Melvin Auten of Kannapolis; three sisters, Rachel Richie and Peggy Poplin of Concord and Doris Clark of Kannapolis; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terri Darlene Auten; three grandchildren, Christy Bowman, April Auten and Kayla Auten; a sister, Faye Eudy and a brother, Edd Auten. Funeral services were held at 3 this afternoon at the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Lawrence Johnson, the Rev. Virgil Manning and the Rev. Thomas Batts officiating.

Burial was in Latimer Cemetery in Calhoun Falls. The family is at the residence, 518 Darlington St. and received friends at the funeral home Thursday night. Memorials may be made to the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646. Calhoun Falls Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur L. Greer
Retired from Milliken & Co.

Arthur Lee (Boo) Greer, 76, of 457 Old Union Rood, died Wednesday, June 3, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Greer was born Nov. 4, 1926 in Union County, a son of the late Otto and Maude Greer. He was a member of Mt. Rowell Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board, choir and was vice-chairman of the deacon board.

He was also a member of the AP&B Society and was the Worthy Patron of The Floyd Wilks Chapter of the Eastern Star #208. Mr. Greer was a member of The Crystal Lodge #161 and was a retiree of Milliken & Co. after 43 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Ruth Cole Greer of the home; a son, Arthur Lee (Lanny) Greer Jr. of Union; a brother, Robert E. Greer of Detroit, Mich.; four sisters-in-law, Mary Thomas of Union, Louise Cole of Charlotte, Mary (Edward) Moye of Columbia and Minnie B, Thomas of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, John (Rose) Cole of Columbus, Ohio and Robert Cole of Union; a daughter-in-law, Rose M. Greer; two granddaughters, Ashley and Alani Greer; and a special son, the Rev. Ronald Williams.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at Mt. Rowell Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon with the Rev. Raymond T. Davis Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vicki F. Jackson
Retired from International Paper

Vicki Fisher Jackson, 63, wife of John L. Jackson of 214 Pine St., Buffalo, died Thursday, June 5, 2003 at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Jackson was born in Buffalo on May 1, 1940, a daughter of Lois Ingle Fisher of Buffalo and the late Rev. E. Howard Fisher. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from International Paper Co.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: two daughters, Tracy J. Champion of Boiling Springs and Tonja Jackson of Monarch; four sisters, Madge Billings of Lyman, Joan Latham, Cindy Fisher and Kim Gardler, all of Buffalo; five brothers, Clint Fisher of Broken Bow, Okla., Charles Fisher, Darrell Fisher, Terry Fisher and Ernest (Buddy) Fisher, all of Buffalo; and two grandchildren, Johnathon Davis and Miranda Davis of Monarch.

Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by a son, Richard Lynn Jackson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Jackson, Roy Junior Jackson, Bill Jackson, Josh Gardler, Matthew Alexander and Randy Billings. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 214 Pine St., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Deborah Jeter
Carlisle resident

CARLISLE Deborah Jeter of Carlisle died at her home Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Arrangements will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home. Shirley Land Domestic worker Shirley Land, 52, wife of Robert Land of 511 Santuc Drive, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center She was born in Newberry County Oct. 18, 1950, a daughter of Mary Brown and the late Gaston Brown.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are four sons, Robert Land Jr., Gerald Land, Michael Land and Corey Land, all of Santuc; three daughters, Talisha Foster, Kenya Land and Yolanda Land, all of Santuc; two brothers, Curentha Jeter and Norman Brown, both of Whitmire; two sisters, Phyllis Epps and Susan Brown, both of Whitmire and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Jeter's Chapel Church by the Rev. James Johnson Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday from 3 until 7 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Monday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ruth O Bedenbaugh
Retired from Union Disabilities

Ruth Owens Bedenbaugh, 65, of 149 Mudbridge Road, Buffalo, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Ellen Sager Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Bedenbaugh was born in Union, April 2, 1938, a daughter of the late Boyce and Addie Pruitt Owens. She was a graduate of Union High School and a lifetime member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Bedenbaugh was retired from Union Disabilities and Special Needs.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Donna K. and Richard Watts of Buffalo; a sister, Ruby Owens Johnson of Buffalo; a brother, Rufus Harold Owens of Buffalo; and two grandchildren, Dustin Watts and Michaela Watts. Mrs. Bedenbaugh was predeceased by a sister Bernice O'Shields, two brothers, Curtis and Eugene Owens and a granddaughter, Shonda Barron.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. today at Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Anderson, the Rev. Wayne Jones, the Rev. Michael L. Evans and the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were: Douglas Crocker, Gene Shetley, Billy Palmer, Chris Palmer, Jeff Owens and Willie Harris.

The following formed the honorary escort: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pharr, Members of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class of Buffalo Baptist Church; employees and former employees of Union Services and Dr. David Keith. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday night. The family is at the home of here sister, Ruby O. Johnson, 2309 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

John Henry Blalock
Retired textile worker

GAFFNEY John Henry Blalock, 72, of 1315 Ford Road, Gaffney, widower of the late Frances Davis Blalock, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Mr. Blalock was born in Cherokee County, a son of the late Manning E. Blalock and Minnie Scruggs Blalock. He was a retired textile worker and a member of Draytonville Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son in law, Delores and Billy Pennington of Gaffney; two step-daughters, Paula Douglas of Live Oaks, Fla., and Shirley Allen of Greenville; two step-sons, Albert Rankin of Spartanburg and Dan Rankin of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Eddie Blalock of Gaffney, Charlie Blalock of Gaffney and Randolph Blalock of Union; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Blalock, and a sister, Josephine Blalock Phillips. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Billy Jones. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home. The family is at the home of Delores Pennington, 232 Stroupe Estate Road, Gaffney. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Bolick
World War II veteran

Robert Gist (Bob) Bolick, 78, of 103 Partridge Road, husband of Sarah Louise Clemmer Bolick, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at 11:40 p. m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Mr. Bolick was born in Union on Oct. 19, 1924, a son of the late Henry P. Bolick Sr. and Inez Gist Bolick.

He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, president of the Men's Club, served on the Committee of Stewardship and Finance and was a member of the A.G. Carter Sunday School Class. Mr. Bolick was a graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Methodist College and was retired from Milliken & Co. after 40 years of service having worked at Excelsior Plant, Milliken Research Center, Midway Plant.

He served as's cost accountant for Milliken & Co. Mr. Bolick was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and was part of the D-Day plus 5 invasion at Omaha Beach. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Henry F. (Pete) Bolick III of the home and Robert Edward Bolick and Janice Shealy of Prosperity; a sister, Judith Ann Sparks of Centerville, Ga., and two grandchildren, Karen Elisabeth Bolick and Katie Michelle Bolick, both of the home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Sweat, the Rev. Larry Hyder and the Rev. Richard Lewis,. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of the A.G. Carter Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 103 Partridge Road. Memorial may be made to the Building Fund at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1622 Kelly Road, Union, S.C. 29379 The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Copeland
Retired domestic worker

Gertrude Copeland, 89, died Monday, June 9, 2003 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Retirement Center. She was born in Kelton Nov. 13, 1913, a daughter of Jim and Beulah Copeland. She joined Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and sang quartets with her sisters known as the (Copeland Girls.) She moved to New York at the age of 16, where she lived for 60 years.

During her residency in New York she worked as a domestic worker for Dr. Robert Holmes and retired after 40 years of service. In 1999, she moved back to South Carolina to be near her family and in the care of her niece, Dorothy Giles Ngongang. Surviving are a sister, Lake Copeland Giles of Kelton; three brothers, Hudson Copeland of Union, Woodrow Copeland of Greenville and James Copeland of Asheville; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at New Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church. Burial Will be in the church cemetery. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Deborah Tucker Jeter
Retired sock inspector

Deborah Tucker Jeter, 79, of 215 Beasley St., Carlisle, widow of the late Fred Jeter, died at her home Friday, June 6, 2003. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County on June 15, 1923, a daughter of the late Roland and Hattie Mobley Tucker. She was educated in the public schools of Union County. She was a retired sock inspector and a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Surviving are a son, Sam A. (Patty) Jeter of Santuc; a step-son, Alfred (Elma Leen) Walker of Santuc; three daughters, Hattie (Ralph) Lipsey of Santuc, Ruby (Eugene) Jeter of Carlisle and Rachel Jeter of the home; two brothers, Arthur (Annie) Tucker of Carlisle and Emmanuel (Arthuree) Tucker of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Sarah P. Tucker of Carlisle and Betty J. (Alvin) Nelson of Detroit, Mich.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of JehovahÕs Witnesses by Brother James Rodgers and Brother Arthur Stevens. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 12 noon to await the hour of service. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be at the home Tuesday evening. The family is at the home, 215 Beasley St., Carlisle. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
