Mr. Pooler died Wednesday, May 17, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born on Dec. 24, 1917, in Darlington County. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Annie Smalls Cooks Sr. She received her education in the public schools and attended Butler High School.
Surviving are her husband, Nathaniel Pooler of Hartsville; 10 daughters, May Frances Poole and Doretha Bishop, both of Hartsville, Verlean (George) Plight, Betty (Jerry) Pooler and Dot Pooler, all of Washington, D.C., Azalee Suratff and Carrie (Lattimore) Bell, both of Sherby, N.C., Retha Mae and Ernestine Mundrow, both of New York, and Pearl (Jason) Pooler Grant; nine sons, Edward (Gloria) Pooler and Bo Pooler, both of Hartsville, Levern Pooler, Henry Pooler and Truford Pooler, all of Darlington, Truman (Fonza Lee) Pooler of Lamar and Davis Pooler of Beaufort; one sister, Pearl Graham of Washington, D.C.; one brother, James Cooks of Hartsville; 65 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.
JEAN T. HARRIS
Mrs. Harris, who died Saturday, May 20, was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Frank Rogers and Cora Andrews Truett. She was an active member of The First Church of The Nazarene and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Roy E. Harris of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Laura Harris of Hartsville; sister, Linda Hudson of Hartsville; grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Harris of Hartsville; nieces, Dawn Face and Denise Cavanaugh; nephew, Woody Hudson; special nieces, Janice Gainey and Beth Johnson.

CHARLES WALKER
Mr. Walker died Saturday, Oct. 21, after an illness. He was born in Farmsville, Va., a son of the late Remus and Annie Gray Walker. He received his education in the public schools in the area.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Walker and Shelley Walker, both of Patterson, N.J.; five sons, Charles (Lisa) Robinson of Orlando, Fla., Ronnie (April) Walker and Daniel McDaniel, both of Hartsville, Marquise (Crystal) Walker and Charles (Charmaine) Walker Jr., both of Silver Springs, Md.; one sister, Estell Butler of Burlington, N.J.; three brothers, Aaron (Shirleen) Walker of Rock Hill, Henry Walker and Donald (Brenda) Walker of Farmsville, Va.; a special friend, Jeanette Walker of Hartsville; goddaughters, Vanetta Williams and Chencelle King, both of Hartsville; 19 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
ANNIE RHODES
Ms. Rhodes passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, in a local nursing facility. She was born in the Swift Creek community of Darlington County, daughter of the late Jeter and Emmie Hatchell Rhodes. Annie retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture after more than 50 years of devoted work. She had an interest in farming and marveled at the changes she saw in the farming industry, such as the progressions from mules to modern machinery. She enjoyed hiking in the mountains and watching the ocean waves, she also liked to see crops grow from seeds up until the time of harvest. Ms. Rhodes was a lifetime member of Swift Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are a nephew, Carlton (Ruth) Rhodes of Florence; two nieces, Carolyn (Boots) Hinson of Burgaw, N.C., and Catherine (Ted) Fontaine of Charleston; and a special friend, Howard Morrison, of Hartsville.
SSG. LEON HICKMON
Ssg. Hickmon died Saturday, Oct. 21, in El Paso, Texas, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Macy Holland and Mary Louise Hickmon Harris. He received his education in the public school system, was a graduate of Hartsville Senior High School class of 1983 and was currently serving on active duty with the U.S. Army in El Paso, Texas.
Surviving other than his mother, Mary Louise Hickmon Harris of Hartsville, and father, Macy Holland of Baltimore, Md., are his wife, Jacqueline J. Blackmon Hickmon of El Paso, Texas; two sons, Cherard Antonio Hickmon and Shelton Wesley Hickmon, both of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Denise Janet Hickmon of Washington, D.C., and Deborah Hickmon Jackson of Hartsville; two brothers, Timothy Bernard Harris and John Lewis Harris, both of Washington, D.C.; and a host of many close cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear relatives and friends.
CHRISTOPHER LEE CONTE
Mr. Conte died Monday, Oct. 23. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Ron Conte and Shirley Grant. He was a carpenter associated with his father in the home construction industry. He was dearly loved by his mother, father, family and friends.
Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; father of Decatur, Ga.; daughter, Briana Conte of Columbia; sisters, Shirley Hicks of Hartsville, Amanda Conte of West Virginia; uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Dee Walker of Florence; cousins, Leslie Walker and Jimmy Walker Jr., both of Florence; grandmother, Evelyn Walker; numerous aunts and uncles in New York, N.Y.
JAMES H. COOKS
Mr. Cooks was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Bishopville, a son of the late Paul and Annie Prescott Cooks. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. He was a farmer all of his life. At the time of his retirement, he was working for the late A.S. Mozingo.
Mr. Cooks was married
to the late Mary Sumpter Cooks. This union was blessed with seven children and a niece that was raised as a daughter. One of his sons, James Cooks, Jr. and a daughter, Thelma Lane Majors, preceded him in death. He was a lifetime member of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served in many capacities; Deacon Board, Willing Workers, Usher Board, and he sang in Choir No. 1.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory and carry on the legacy of the Mr. James Henry Cooks, include four daughters Bessie (Bobby) Woodham and Jessie (Cliff) Woodham, both of Jersey City, N.J., Jannie (Alex) Holloman of Hartsville, and Barbara (James) Durante of Bishopville; two sons, Elex Cooks of Jersey City, N.J., and Charles (Lillie) Cooks of Hartsville; an adopted spiritual son, the Rev. Ira Timmons Jr. of Florence; one sister, Pearl Graham of Washington, D.C.; a daughter-in-law, Florida M. Cooks of Hartsville; one sister-in-law, Laura Brunson of New York, N.Y.; one brother-in-law Nathaniel Pooler of Hartsville; 35 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives, and very dear friends.
CARRIE McRAE CAULK
She is survived by a step-daughter, Betty Caulk Derrick of Bennettsville; several nieces and nephews of North Carolina; a cousin, Cliff Jones of Hartsville and Halbert Jones of Maxton, N.C.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Bennettsville.
MILDRED T. GAINEY
Mrs. Gainey died Sunday, Aug. 6. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Thelma Anderson Tyner. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, L.A. Gainey of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Felicia Gainey of Cassatt; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Troy Chisholm of Patrick; sisters, Mary Player of Myrtle Beach, Lois O'neal of Patrick, Judy Howle of Hartsville; brothers, Lonnie E. Tyner and Bobby Tyner, both of Patrick, and Ronnie Tyner of Hartsville.
JEAN V. HARRIS
Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 7, 1937, in Darlington County, a daughter of Henry Verner and Mozetta Wright Verner. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated with high honors from Butler High School in 1955.
While at Butler, she played on the varsity basketball team, was the head majorette and was voted 'Most Likely To Succeed' by her graduating class. From there, she attended Cortez Peters Business College in Washington, D.C.
While in Washington, she met and married
her first husband, Master Sgt. Joseph T. Harris Sr. This union was blessed with three sons. She and her husband traveled to Germany, South America and Panama. She also lived in Ft. Knox, Ky., Staten Island, N.Y., and Columbia, Md. She was very active in military distaff. After her husband's death in 1974, she moved back to Hartsville and operated her own business. She was also a homemaker. Shortly after her move back to Hartsville, she met her second husband, Hubert 'Sonny' Johnson Jr. This relationship endured for 32 years.
She was a member Mt. Calvary AME Church and received her 50-year membership certificate in 2003. She was also a member of the Missionary Society and was crowned 'Missionary Queen' in 2004.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory and continue the legacy of Jean Verner Harris include her husband, Hubert L. Johnson Jr. of Hartsville; three sons, Richie C. Harris of Lynchburg, S.C., Kevin L. Harris of Charlotte, N.C., and Joseph T. (Romona) Harris Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, William C. (Dorothy) Verner of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Patrick Blakney, Joe T. Harris, Jean Michelle Harris, Henry H. Harris and Ingrid F. Harris; one niece, Sharon Marrow, one nephew, Arnandez Larkin and a host of other close relatives and very dear friends.
WANDA G. CROWLEY
Ms. Crowley, who died Aug. 5, was the daughter of the late Bobby and Betty Baxley Hinson.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Buster Faile of Hartsville; sisters, Susan Hardee of Wilmington, N.C. Ruby Boone of Lexington; brothers, Robert Wayne Hinson of McBee, Kenneth and Mitchell Hinson of Hartsville; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Scotty Hopkins.
LISA MARIE PRATT
Mrs. Pratt died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Jackie L. Gainey and Linda Hawkins Jones. She was a member of Mission for Christ. She graduated from Hartsville High School and was an LPN for six years.
Surviving are her sons, John 'Wesley' Pratt and Justin Pratt, both of Hartsville; daughters, Heather Pratt and Lauren Winburn, both of, Hartsville; stepsons, Christopher Winburn and Cameron Winburn, both of Hartsville; stepdaughter, Amber Winburn of Hartsville; father of Marysville, Calif.; mother of Camden; brother, Daniel Gainey of McBee; stepsisters, Sheila Tyner and Angela Fales, both of Hartsville; halfsister, Becky Gainey of Marysville, Calif. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Lula Gainey; maternal grandparents, Coke and Betty Hawkins.
J. T. GRIGGS
Mr. Griggs died Saturday, Aug. 5, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Monroe County to Robert Bryant and Gertrude Webb Griggs. He lived most of his life in Wren. Mr. Griggs was a retired employee of Atlas Truck Body in Wren after 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Nettleton Church of Christ, where he was a Sunday school teacher, song leader, and a fill-in preacher over the years. He enjoyed studying the Bible and leading singing.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Bates and her husband, Larry of Saltillo; three sons, Frankie Griggs and his wife Georgia of Vicksbury, Bobby Griggs and his wife, Jimmie Lou of Nettleton, Wendell Griggs and his wife, Nancy of Hartsville; two sisters, Laura Worthey and Laverne Ritter of Smithville; one sister-in-law, Ruby Griggs of Amory; 12 grandchildren, Renee Childers and her husband, Mike of Mooreville, Michael Bates and his wife Kathy, of Batesville, David Bates of Sherman, Shea and Sean Griggs of Vicksburg, Michael Eubank of Glasgow, Scotland, Abe Eubank, Kirstina and Anzhelika Griggs, all of Hartsville, Kelly Todd of Cordova, Tenn., Ryan Todd and his wife, Sarah of Pontotoc, LaChresha Todd of Tupelo; four great-grandchildren, Stuart and Scott Childers of Mooreville, Kellee Liles of Batesville, Lindsey Todd of Cordova, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Truvell Worthey Griggs, who died on Aug. 8, 2005; his parents; a infant daughter, Audrey Kay Griggs; two sisters, Delon Thompson and Sally Edith Broughman; two brothers, Harold Eugene Griggs and Robert Bryant Griggs.
Pallbearers were Michael Bates, David Bates, Mike Childers, Shea Griggs, Sean Griggs and Gerald Worthey.
JIMMY DeWITT
Mr. DeWitt died Friday, Aug. 4. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Monroe M. and Dorothy Straup DeWitt. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was a graduate of Clemson University. He was a coach and teacher at Thomas Hart Academy for many years and also worked with young kids at Hartsville High School.
Surviving are his daughters, Kacee Dewitt and Jenna DeWitt, both of Hartsville; brother, M. Gregg Dewitt of Florence; grandchild, Wyatt James Purvis; mother of his children, Jennifer L. DeWitt of Hartsville; nephew, Parker DeWitt.
