Surviving are his wife, Barbara JoAnn Roger Newman of Murrells Inlet; one son, Charles Kenneth 'Kenny' Newman and wife, Robin of Murrells Inlet; one brother, Bennie Newman of Aiken; one sister, Bernice Blackwell of Hartsville; one grandson, Casey Joseph Newman of Murrells Inlet.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. Burial followed in Hillcrest cemetery. Memorials may be made to Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department, PO Box 48, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
BETTY HENDRIX
Mrs. Hendrix died Sunday, July 2, at her residence. She was born in Blackville (Aiken) , daughter of the late Dan Henderson and Bell Elizabeth Powell Stringfield. She was a housewife and a member of Fair Hope Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Azalee Smith of Lamar, Jeanette Anglin of Pickens; four sons, Roy E. Rutland of Ft. Lawn, John B. Rutland of Wareplace, David R. Rutland of Easley, Don H. Rutland of Greenville; 18 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evie Hutto of Langley.
Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by her first husband, E.H. Rutland, and her second husband, Bud Hendrix. Memorials may be made to the Lamar Rescue Squad, PO Box 114, Lamar, SC 29069 or the EMS, 1625 Harry Byrd Hwy., Darlington, SC 29532
CAROL G. KNORR
Mrs. Knorr, who died Thursday, July 6, was born in Hartsville daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Gainey.
Surviving are her husband, Floyd Knorr; children, Pamela (Richard) Truett, William T. (Billy) and wife Dori DeWitt III, James A. Gainey, all of Hartsville; close family friends, Glorian and Gary Chisholm of Patrick; and three grandchildren.
LILLIAN D. HUNT
Mrs. Hunt, widow of John Dwight Hunt Sr., died Friday, July 7, 2006. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Mollie Hatchell Davis. She was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Lillian graduated from Rex Hospital School of Nursing in 1929. She took a break from nursing to raise her son and returned to work in 1978 at Bethea Baptist Home, where she continued until her retirement in her 80s.
Surviving are her grandchildren, Neil Hunt of Sumter, Robin Hunt Schmidt of Summerville; daughter-in-law, Shirley Hunt of Sumter; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, John Hunt Jr.; sisters, Ruby Veselak and Catherine Spiering.
JEWELL SELLERS
Mrs. Sellers died Sunday, July 9, in a local hospital. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 28, 1930. Jewell was a loving and devoted housewife, who also loved her dogs very much. She was the widow of Henry O. Sellers.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael 'Mike' and Dawn Sellers of Florence; two daughters and a son-in-law, Gloria Griffin, Debbie and Danny Stokes, all of Darlington; grandchildren, Khristine Harwood of West Virginia, Barbara (Tim) Davis of Wisconsin, Stephen (Patricia) Griffin of Oklahoma, Elizabeth Kemmerlin, Brandon Kemmerlin, both of Darlington, Scarlett Sellers of Florence; great-grandchildren, Amber Hatridge, Derrick Hatridge, Grayson Griffin all of Oklahoma, Chelsea, Hannah, Olivia Davis, all of Wisconsin, and Bobby and Josh Harwood of West Virginia.
WILLIE 'MUD' LOVE
JAQUIS BARRETT
Mr. Barrett was born Jan. 15, 1992, a son of Phyllis Barrett and Phillip Wilson. He was preparing to go to the ninth grade at Hartsville High School. He was a member of Full Word Ministry COGICJ Inc. in Hartsville. He also attended Browntown Temple Holiness Church where he sang on the Browntown Sunbeam Choir.
Jaquis loved all sports, but he especially liked football. He played for a number of years with 'The Falcons' of the Bishopville Recreational League. He also loved to fish and had a special love for animals. Jaquis was well known and had a gift of bringing people together in friendship. Many may wonder why certain things happened but Jaquis' love of people and nature was God's way of showing others the love that he truly had for his fellow man. His presence from among us will be missed by both family and friends alike. One of his sisters, Jessica McKennzie preceded him in death.
Surviving to cherish the wonderful and loving memory of Jaquis Dominique Barrett in addition to his mother, Phyllis Barrett of Hartsville, and his father, Phillip (Ella Mae) Wilson of Bishopville, are four sisters, Valerie Chestnut of Hartsville, Phillicia McKennzie of Sumter, Lawanda Halley and Shakeia Wilson both of Bishopville; three brothers, Rafeal Barrett of Hartsville, Hirtrell Halley and Shaquille Wilson both of Bishopville; his maternal grandparents, Felix and Valerie Chestnut of Paterson, N.J.; his paternal grandmother, Edna Wilson of Bishopville; his special cousins, Kentrell Chestnut and Kendrick Wesley both of Hartsville; his special friend, Ann Dubose-Coates of Hartsville; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and very close friends.
BUCK GAINEY
Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, July 4. Born in Chesterfield, he was a son of the late Sebe Cornelius and Roxie Gainey Gainey. Mr. Gainey will be greatly missed by his family, friends and his two special grandsons, Joshua and Jonathan Palacios.
Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, James Richard Gainey, Sebe Perry and Connie Gainey, all of McBee; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and George Rollins of Bishopville, Kitty and Juan Eufracio of McBee, Cynthia Gainey and Michael Summerford, and Kerry and Tony Bell, all of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Yarborough, Mazel Atkinson and Diane McWhorter, all of Hartsville; brothers, Daythurn Gainey of McBee, Ray Gainey of Bishopville; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Myrton Gainey; sister, Myrtle Branham.
MAZAREE GILLESPIE
EMMA PRATT
Born Aug. 13, 1913, in Lee County, Mrs. Pratt was a daughter of the late Clarence B. Watts and Fannie Davis Watts. She had formerly worked as a weaver for Mt. Vernon Mills. A former member of Harrison Road, Holland Avenue and Crescent Hill Baptist Churches, in later years she attended St. Andrews Baptist Church. Mrs. Pratt, a self-taught pianist, loved to play, sing and entertain in all the churches she attended, as well as at family gatherings and senior care facilities. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she exemplified Christ's love in all she did for all she came in contact with.
Survivors include her sister, Madge (C.B.) Gooding of Columbia; brothers, Marion Watts of Columbia, Carl Watts of Bishopville; grandsons, Van E. Holmes and wife, Lynn of Chapin, Wayne A. Holmes of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Emily, Brandon and Noel Holmes and Wayne Holmes Jr.
Those who preceded her in death include her husbands, Ervin G. Stone and Horace Pratt; daughter, Betty Sue Starnes; three sisters; four brothers.
WALTER W. SESSOMS
Mr. Sessoms, business and civic leader, of Atlanta and Darlington, died Sunday, July 2, at his Sandy Springs home following a brief illness. He was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Darlington to Frank M. Sessoms and Maggie Sessoms. He retired in 1997 as group president of BellSouth Telecommunications. He began his career with Southern Bell in 1956 in Columbia. From 1957 to 1959, he served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Sessoms was widely known for his plainspoken good humor, love of baseball, compassion for others and his encouraging management style. His interests during retirement included a continued commitment to education at all levels, his alma mater, Wofford College, and his dedication to numerous non-profit organizations. In addition, Mr. Sessoms served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He served as a member of the Governor''s Education Reform Commission and Georgia State Board of Education. He was a 1956 graduate of Wofford College where he earned a degree in economics and business administration. In 1995, he was awarded an honorary doctorate. At the time of his death, Mr. Sessoms was serving his second term on the Wofford Board of Trustees.
Mr. Sessoms is survived by his wife of 49 years, Harriet Ann Floyd Sessoms; his children, Lee Sessoms and Kay Jacobi; his daughter-in-law Brooke Sessoms; son-in-law Geoff Jacobi; and grandchildren Maggie and Chris Sessoms and Ann Morgan and Campbell Jacobi; his brothers, Ted Sessoms and Frank Sessoms, and his sister, Annette Black Martin, all of Darlington, and his older sister Kathryn McLaurin of Fayetteville, N.C.
His daughter, Molly Sessoms and his siblings Ethyl Albrecht, Jo Cox and Earlene Morgan preceded him in death.

HAZEL L. McPHAIL
Mrs. McPhail died Saturday, July 1, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Mrs. McPhail was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Lucille McClain Lincoln and the late Chester Arthur Lincoln.
She received her education in the public schools in the area. At an early age she joined New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and later joined St. John Temple in Society Hill. While living in North Carolina she attended Refuge House of God Deliverance Ministries.
Surviving are her mother, Lucille M. Lincoln of Society Hill; two daughters, Sherry L. McPhail of Charlotte, N.C. and Jaclyn McFarland of Florence; one son, Johnny (LaTonya) McPhail of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Travis L. Singletary Jr., Todd Dexxmond Peoples, Jalann McPhail, Erika McPhail and Sharisse Daziah McPhail, all of Charlotte, N.C.; Jonathan David McPhail of Houston, Texas; Jared Antonio McFarland, Byron Ezekial McFarland and Marlon Denzel McFarland, all of Hartsville; a special nephew, Jerome (Joyce) Allen of Buffalo, N.Y.; a foster daughter, Patrice Antrum of Hartsville; two sisters, Arthurine Perkins of Society Hill and Anna (Willie) Davis of Columbia; two brothers, Ernest J. Lincoln and Minister Arthur (Dorothy) Lincoln Jr., both of Hartsville; two sisters-in-law, Florie Sellers of Society Hill and Norma Jean Lincoln of Columbia; one brother-in-law, Frank McPhail Sr. of Darlington; two aunts, Laura W. Smith of Columbia and Viola Byrd of New Jersey; a spiritual sister, Lucille F. Drayton of Society Hill; a goddaughter, LaToyia Chavis of Darlington; a special friends, Addie Bell Robinson of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LEE SHAW
Mr. Shaw, widower of Maude Campbell Shaw, died July 6. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Waldon C. and Maggie Walters Shaw. He was a member of Hebron UMC and retired from the S.C. Highway Department.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilea (C.J.) Collins of Wake Forest, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Virginia Shaw of McBee; sisters, Gladys Sullivan of Lancaster and Genolia Deese of Kershaw; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Walter C. Shaw.

MARTHA S. REYNOLDS
Mrs. Reynolds, wife of John Reynolds, died July 5. She was born in Bennettsville, the daughter of the late Lollie Beverly Sellers. She was employed with the American Red Cross.
Surviving other than her husband of Wilmington, N.C. are a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Huey Galloway of Hartsville; sisters, Ruth McArthur of Darlington, Mary Lee of Martinsville, Va., and Diane Floyd of Bennettsville; and four grandchildren.

LYDIA M. CUMBEE
Mrs. Cumbee died Monday, July 3, at a local hospital after a long bout with cancer. She was born on April 6, 1944, in Darlington County, to the late Hardee Rogers and Lucille Gainey Rogers. She graduated from McBee High School and was a stocker with Piggy Wiggly Carolina Company. She loved flowers, gardening and canning vegetables and going fishing with her husband and taking care of her family. Mrs. Cumbee was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, James E. Cumbee of North Charleston; three daughters, Cynthia Lynn Cumbee of North Charleston, Toni Annette Barnitz of Miami, Fla., and Kim Barnitz of CoCo Beach, Fla.; one brother Hardee Rogers Jr., of Cassett; and one granddaughter, Stevie Rae Barnitz of CoCo Beach, Fla.
