JOHNNIE MAE JOHNSON
Funeral services for Johnnie Mae Johnson will be held today, Aug. 16, 2006, at 4 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in Hartsville. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. J.D. Blue, pastor, will officiate the service.

Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 27, 1939, in Bishopville, a daughter of the late Hallie Blackney Johnson and Johnny Johnson. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Butler High School in 1958. During much of her working life, she worked as a cook at the Rainbow Inn Restaurant in Hartsville.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory of Johnnie Mae Johnson are one daughter, Teresa Johnson of Hartsville; three sons, Reggie (Teresa) Ketter of Norfolk, Va., Roderick Johnson of Charlotte, N.C., and Eric Johnson of Hartsville; five sisters, Mattie Stevenson, Sylvia (J.D.) Johnson, Yvonne Johnson, Dorothy Johnson and Margie (Blakney) Smith, all of Hartsville; seven brothers, General Lee Johnson, Billy (Gwendolyn) Johnson, Harvey (Bobby Jean) Johnson, James (Margaret) Johnson, Johnny (Garcenia) Johnson, Hercules (Clara) Johnson, and Wendell (Denice) Johnson all of Hartsville; and host of other relatives and very dear friends.

DICK HALL
Funeral services for Delmas L. 'Dick' Hall, 68, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Thigpen officiating. Burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Hall died Friday, Aug. 11. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Creighton and Eula Mae Tolson Hall.

He was previously employed with Hugh Newsome's Gulf Station.

Surviving are his daughters, Jill Kelley of Bethune, Robyn Myers of Camden; sisters and brother-in-law, Mazalee H. Vaughn of Charlotte, N.C., Betty Jean Sarasin of Vancouver, Wash., Carolyn and Don Mollo of Hendersonville, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Loyal 'Pedro' and Dianne Hall of Hartsville; and grandchild, Tyner Kelley.

SUSANA HERRINGTON
Funeral services for Susana Herrington will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

JACK BRUCE
Funeral services for Jack Bruce will be held today, Aug. 16, 2006, at 12 p.m. at Nazareth Apostolic Church. The burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Bruce was born April 10, 1924, in Darlington County, a son of the late Ellis and Phyllis Brown Bruce. He was educated in the public schools of the county. Mr. Bruce enlisted in the United States Army in 1944. He served in the United States and the Philipine Islands with 1941st Engineer Service Company (Utilities Aviation) . He attained the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged on May 17, 1946, after having earned the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific and Philippine Liberation Service Medals with Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Later, he worked for Williams Trucking Service and Coker Pedigree before retiring due to health reasons. He joined the Nazareth Apostolic Church in March of 1977 under the pastorate of Bishop Vera M. Davis. He was an ordained deacon and faithfully embraced the ministry as long as he was able to do so.

He was joined in holy matrimony to the former Alta Mae Johnson on Dec. 28, 1948, and to this union three daughters and four sons were born. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. All who knew him will miss his gentle smile and compassionate spirit.

Surviving to cherish his precious memory are his loving wife, Alta Mae; his daughters, the Rev. Jacqueline Elliott of Knoxville, Tenn., Mae Verna Pate and Patricia (Elijah) Robinson, both of Hartsville; his sons, Donnell Bruce of Society Hill, Jilly (Donette) Bruce, Johnny (Laurie) Bruce and the Rev. Dwayne (Ernestine) Bruce, all of Hartsville; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Lee Ann Samuel of Philadelphia, Pa., Nancy Lee Rhodes of Hartsville; his brother, Walter (Rosa Lee) Bruce of Philadelphia, Pa.; his sisters-in-law, Lillie Bruce, Millie (James) Bruce, Frances (Freddie) Jackson; his brother-in-law, Ernest Gibson; and a host of other loving and devoted family members and friends, including Cynthia Bruce, Thurman Pate and JoAnn McFarland.

GERALD GODBOLD
DARLINGTON - Graveside services for Gerald D. Godbold, 64, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in Darlington County Memorial Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Godbold died Saturday, Aug. 12, in a local hospital. He was born in Dillon County, son of the late William H. and Nellie Blackman Godbold. He worked as an insurance representative for Liberty Life Insurance Company and then for Willis Construction Company. Mr. Godbold was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a charter member of Freedom Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Imogene Yarborough Godbold; two sons, David C. Godbold of Fla., Jerry (Terri) Godbold of Cheraw; a daughter, Lisa (Grady) Parrish of Darlington; six grandchildren, Laura, Matthew, Josh, Brad, Sarah and Whitney; a great-grandchild, Kali; two brothers, Howard Godbold, Gene (Ann) Godbold, both of Darlington; two sisters, Edna G. Anderson and Dora (C.D.) Strickland, both of Darlington.

Mr. Godbold was preceded in death by a son, Paul Godbold.

LOIS H. O'QUINN
Funeral services for Lois Hock O'Quinn, 86, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Revs. Paul Sullivan and Bev Kennedy officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. O'Quinn, wife of Ashley W. O'Quinn, died Aug. 12. She was born in Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late John LaRue and Odessa Mae Knorr Hock. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Hartsville; daughter, Kim O'Quinn Smith of Aiken.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Hugh E. Smith Jr.

Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550.

IDA ERVIN JEFFERS
Ida Ervin Jeffers, 92, of the Black Swamp Community, passed on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 15. She was married to her devoted husband, William Henry Jeffers, for 64 years.

Born near Mechanicsville, she was the daughter of Samuel Hugh and Ida Dargan Ervin. The family moved to the Old Ervin home on Pocket Road in Florence County in 1925.

Ida, known by all who loved her as Ily, had a quiet demeanor, but a deep running passion for the things she loved: her family, her artwork, the outdoors and her God. Her children remember her extraordinary sympathy and tenderness. Her creativity was evident in everything she did - especially in her delightful ceramic figures. She loved the green beauty of Back Swamp and Black Creek; and she taught this love to her children, nieces and nephews, and grandchildren by taking them camping and swimming and exploring in the woods. She drew strength from God and from her church family at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Predeceased are daughter Jessie Timmons Jeffers in 2000 and John T. Jeffers in 2003.

Surviving are her husband; sister Virginia E. Campbell; daughter Jo Jeffers of Back Swamp; son, Hugh Ervin (Anna Lee Turner) Jeffers of Charleston; daughter, Lisa J. (Truxton) Fulton of Huntsville, Ala.; and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Higgins Jeffers of Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a special niece, Mary Ervin (Bill) Paulson.

Funeral arrangements are by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. Interment will be private in the afternoon.

Donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 252 S. Dargan, St., Florence, SC 29506, or to McLeod Hospice, 1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

MILDRED F. MARTIN
Graveside services for Mildred Freeman Martin, 89, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Deacon Jack Larkin will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Martin, widow of Roy Martin, died Tuesday, Aug. 15. Born in Hamlet, N.C., she was a daughter of the late George Jefferson and Bessie A. Peele Freeman. She was the manager of the Glamour Shop in Hartsville for many years and later was associated with Jordan Marsh Stores in Florida.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Mary Martin of Florida; grandchildren, Terri Morgan, Selisa Spires, Stuart Martin, Stephen Martin, Susan Hanks; great-niece and spouse, Sondra and William Johnson; eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Martin, and grandson, Sean Martin.

CHARLES STEPHENSON
Funeral services for Charles Stephenson will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J. D. Blue officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Bluff cemetery, located in Bishopville, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

LAURA ROGERS
Funeral services for Laura Rogers will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 18, 2006, at Kingsville United Methodist Church.

The burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. Rev. James E. Moore, the pastor of Kingsville will officiate the service.

Ms. Rogers was born Aug. 20, 1916, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry Rogers and Della James Rogers. She was educated in the county's public schools. At an early age she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived there most of her adult life.

Ms. Rogers was a member of Unity Temple Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she faithfully served as a Missionary and also sang on the choir. She worked in Long Island, N.Y., as a nannie for several of the families in the area.

Her love, the warmth, the kindness and compassion will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory of Laura Rogers include her sisters, Marie (William) Ezigbo - Greene of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Edna Rogers Gregg of Hartsville; her brothers, Albertus 'Bert' Rogers of Hartsville, and Rufus Rogers of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and very dear friends.

SHEILA H. DOWNEY
PAGELAND - Funeral services for Sheila Hicks Downey, 45, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 18, 2006, at Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy. The Rev. Ricky Dutton will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Downey died Tuesday, Aug. 15. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Cecil Quick Hicks and the late Eugene Hicks.

Surviving are her husband, Billy Chris Downey of Pageland; sons and daughter-in-law, Billy Eugene Downey of Pageland, Chivis D. and Janet Downey of Chesterfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia D. and Bradley Williams and Ashley Yvonne Downey and Rodney Roberts, all of Pageland; sister, Ginger Renee Grantham of Hartsville; brothers, William Carlton Hicks Sr. and Gene Mitchell Hicks Jr., both of Hartsville; stepfather, Ernest Boykin of Hartsville; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother Gene Mitchell Hicks Sr., and her sister Joan Hicks.

JOHN FRENCH
BEAUFORT - A memorial service for John 'Jack' Thatcher French, 68, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Davidson Hall, Coker College in Hartsville, with Copeland Funeral Home of Beaufort in charge.

Mr. French died Friday, Aug. 4, in Beaufort. He was born Sept. 4, 1937, in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of Eleanor Thatcher French and William Budd French. He was known to many for his quick wit, intelligence, and humor. Receiving a master's from Johns Hopkins University and doctorate from McGill University, Dr. French taught American Studies at The College of William and Mary, the U.S. Naval Academy and Coker College. He was a naval intelligence officer during the Vietnam war.

Mostly, he was recognized as man who was a fiercely passionate horseman. He schooled and bred many of his thoroughbreds at 'Banbury Cross,' his charming 18th century house, where he resided with his beloved horses, dogs, cats and chickens. He ran his horses in New York, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. He was a member of the New York Racing Association and a trainer for the New York Racing Association from 1985-2000. Those who loved Jack considered him to be a Renaissance man, to experience life with him was like walking back in time to a gentler era.

He was preceded in death by a son, Christian French, and a daughter, Alexis French.

Survivors include his wife, Lavinia Ravenel French of Beaufort; and his grandchildren, Christian and Jasmine French. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

LULA B. GARLAND
A graveside service for Lula Brown Garland, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 18, 2006, in Wesley Chapel Methodist Church cemetery in Lydia, officiated by Rev. Steven Garland and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Garland, widow of D.G. Garland Sr., died Tuesday Aug.15, in a local nursing home. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Jacob C. and Florence Braddock Brown. She was co-owner of Garland's INS Grocery where she also worked as a clerk for many years. Lula was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church in Darlington.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Raymond) Garland Wilkes, Sybil G. Kelly both of Hartsville; two sons, the Rev. Steven T. (Ann) Garland of Hueytown, Ala., D.G. 'David' (Glenda) Garland of Palmetto, Ga.; three granddaughters, Ronda W. McElveen, Sheneen G. Daniels, Wendy G. Forsythe; seven grandchildren, Chad Garland, Ray Wilkes, Scott Kelly, Randy Kelly, Garland Kelly, Jim Kelly and Rusty Garland ; 17 great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Paul C. Kelly.

Mrs. Garland was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Sadie G. Kelley, six brothers, Peyton Sr., Grover, Newett, David, Jack Sr. and Charles Brown, and a sister, Ruby B. Johnson.
