Mr. Thomas was born June 10, 1925, in Darlington County, a son of the late George Marion and Fannie Morris Thomas. He was a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church. He loved all kinds of gospel music and sang on a quartet that was organized at Kingsville. Mr. Thomas worked at Nucor Steel as a crane operator for 23 years and retired from there in 1987. He loved baseball and was an avid supporter of the Lydia Red Sox. He was an umpire for a number of years as well. He had a passion for gardening and this hobby allowed him to grow all kinds of produce, much of which he lovingly gave to his friends and family. Two of his children, Jessie Mae Thomas Hall and Ivory Thomas Jackson preceded him in death.
Those who survive him and continue to cherish his legacy include six daughters, Sandra Thomas Lucas of Lamar, Rosa Lee (Melvin) Gerald of Darlington, Debra Thomas of Charlotte, N.C., Janie Thomas, Veronica Thomas and Carolyn Thomas all of Hartsville; three sons, the Rev. Eddie (Corine) Thomas Jr. of Bishopville, Frank (Barbara) Thomas and Joseph (Diane) Thomas of Meriden, Conn., his stepchildren, Shirley Reed, Bernetha Reed and Amanda Adams, all of Hartsville, Ulysses Adams of Henderson, N.C., and Henry Reed of Meriden, Conn.;19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and many other relatives and very dear friends.
MILDRED JACKSON
CORNELIA WALTON
Mrs. Walton died Monday, Aug. 28, at her residence. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Mack and Carrie Pate Jowers. She received her education in the public schools and was a graduate of Shannon High School. She attended Benedict College and received her bachelor's degree in education.
She was a member of the Mt. Elon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the NAACP and Chesterfield County Retired Education Association.
Surviving are two daughters, Braber W. (Michael) Spell of Jefferson and Fatima W. (Sidney) Wright of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Doretha J. Blakeney of Pageland; four grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.
SALLY JUNE
Mrs. June died Saturday, Aug. 26, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Luscious and Julia Harrington Peterson. She received her education in the public schools in the area and graduated from Butler High School. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and the Easter Star Chapter 233.
Surviving are her son, Toby June of Hartsville; two sisters, Catherine (Julian) Snype of Charleston and Eva Wright of New York, N.Y.; several grandchildren and a host of close relatives and friends.
PEARL BREWER
Mrs. Brewer died Tuesday Aug. 29, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jose' Boyd and Pearl Chambers McIver Boyd. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Wesley Temple Holiness Church. She served as mother of the church and kitchen committee chairman.
Surviving are her husband, Amos Brewer Sr. of Hartsville; two sons, Amos (Joye) Brewer Jr. of West Hempstead, N.Y., and Tristan Parrott of Hartsville; six sisters, Lizzie Johnson of Norfolk, Va., Rena McIver of Pemberton, N.J., Gerturde Rogers, Marie Ruth, Fannie (Perry) Simon and Ruth Johnson, all of Darlington; six sisters-in-law, Zealouise (Theodore) Hough, Amanda Brewer and Portia Brewer all of Hartsville, Susie (Maxie) Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa., Laura (Leslie) O'Neal of Winston Salem, N.C., Juliette (the Rev. Timothy) Lunn of Baltimore, Md.; a special niece, Marcella Parrott of Darlington; adopted children, Mr. and Dr. Lance Watson of Hartsville; a special son, Lamias Muldrow of Darlington; a close cousin, Gladys (the Rev. Mac) Hines of Florence; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.
REV. WADE H. GODFREY
Rev. Godfrey died Sept. 3. He was born in Rockingham, N.C. and reared in the Ware Shoals area. He married
his best friend, Ruth Allen, in October of 1947. With Ruth by his side, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman Univeristy and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in 1957. Along the way and in the next few years, he and Ruth had four daughters: Darlene, Christy, Ann and Tina. He began his career in ministry in South Carolina and pastored many churches there including McClellanville, Marion and Ruffin Baptist Church in Charleston County, Antioch Baptist Church in Hartsville, Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, Parksville Baptist Church in Parksville, where he retired in 1985. He went on to pastor Harris Creek Baptist Church in Society Hill, after he retired. He and Ruth moved to Ninety Six in July 1997 and enjoyed an active life in their church doing what they had always done, ministering to others and sharing the news of Christ.
Survivors include his wife: Ruth Allen Godfrey, Ninety Six, three daughters: Darlene (Devon) Byrd, Society Hill; Ann Godfrey, Trenton; and Tina (Tommy) Simmons, Ninety Six. He was preceded in death by a daughter. Christy. Wade and Ruth reared their granddaughter LeAnne Godfrey Stockman, Ninety Six. Also surviving are ten other grandchildren: Michelle, Troy, April, Brook, Angela, Whitney, Cary, Tiffany, Michelle and Zach; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sara Smith, Hartwell, Ga. and Alice Collins, Ware Shoals; sister-in -law, Naomi Godfrey, Ware Shoals, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the Carolinas.

BILL HAWKINS
Mr. Hawkins, widower of Ruby Gardner Hawkins, died Monday, Sept. 4. Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late J. Henry and Olivia Byrd Hawkins. He was educated at the U.S. Army Administration School and the Carolina College of Commerce. He served in the 30th Infantry Division during World War II and the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean conflict. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was retired as the owner and operator of Sanitary Cleaners and previously had been employed by the SC Probation and Parole Board of Darlington and Dillon counties. He was a member of the First Baptist Church; life member and past Post Commander of VFW Post #8093; past President and member of the Guardsman Club; holder of the Pilgrim Degree of Merit of Moose International; past administrator and Governor of Moose International Lodge #1770; past State Prelate and Deputy Grand Governor of Moose International; and a member of the Hartsville Racehorse Coffee Club for 35 years.
Surviving are his son and daughters-in-law, Gerald 'Tommy' and Phyllis Hawkins of Norwell, Mass., and Betty Moore Hawkins of Bishopville; grandchildren and spouses, Jerry and Christine Hawkins of Teaneck, N.J.; Terry and Dave Grab of Erie, Pa.; Lori Griffith of Jupiter, Fla.; and Sean and Gundrun Hawkins of Augsburg, Germany, and eight great-grandchildren. His wife of 68 years and his son, Rev. Billy Hawkins, predeceased him.
HENRY JACKSON SR.
Mr. Jackson died, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Maxie and Alice Graham Jackson. He received his education in the public schools in the area. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church and chairman of the deacon board.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Mae McCall Jackson of Hartsville; nine children, Henry (Joyce) Jackson Jr., Joseph (Diane) Jackson, Catherleen Shaw, Linda Delois McFaland James, Sylvia (Robert) Hickmon and Lisa (Alphonso) Williams, all of Hartsville, Annie Lou (Alvin) Simmons and Burnice Jackson, both of FLorence and Quantario Irell Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa.; five siblings, Alice Delois Mitchell, Dorothy Mae McCall, Jo Ann Scott and Levern Jackson, all of Hartsville, and Willie Mae Kennedy of Pinesville; 25 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LOUISE K. MOZINGO
Mrs. Mozingo died Sunday, Sept. 3. Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late William Raymond and Mozelle Caddell Kissiah. Mrs. Mozingo was raised in Darlington County and moved to Camden in 1955. She was formerly employed with Dorby Frocks in Bishopville, BiFlex in Bishopville, and Skyline Manufacturing in Camden for 30 years. Mrs. Mozingo was an active member of Wateree Baptist Church for 50 years. Her life centered around her church and her family.
Surviving are her husband of almost 56 years, James Randall Mozingo, daughter, Teresa A. Mozingo, of Camden, Granddaughters, Betsey McDowell of Camden, and Mary Catherine McDowell Weaver (Tim) of Darlington, great grandsons, James Randall Mozingo II of Camden and Mozingo Carter Weaver of Darlington, sister, Ruby (Earl) Tollison, sisters-in-law, Frances S. Kissiah and Rebecca Kissiah, both of Hartsville; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Betty and Herb Griswold, and Emily Parker, all of Camden. She was predeceased by sisters, Frances K. Mann, Betty Doris Kissiah, brothers, the Rev. Coyt L. Kissiah, James W. Kissiah, Bruce and Jasper Kissiah.
LAWRENCE NORWOOD
Mr. Norwood died Saturday, Sept. 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late James A. and Ella Byrd Norwood and stepmother Edell N. Norwood. He served two years in the military during World War II with a tour in Japan. He was employed at Sonoco Products Company for more than 40 years before his retirement. He loved Sonoco and all the many employees he met during those years. He was a member of Sonoco's Old Timers Club, former member of the Lions Club, and the Methodist Men's Club at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church at Lydia until his health prevented him from attending.
Mr. Norwood was a life-long member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church and loved his church family as his own family. He especially enjoyed his Sunday school class and its members and had a close relationship with his pastor.
He loved his family, church, friends, work, and people in general. He will be missed by each and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Stokes Norwood of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Heather Norwood, Alan and Debby Norwood, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Jimmy Bryant of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eleanor and Marion Bonniott of Darlington, Lou Ellen and John Lewis of Jackson, SC, Mary Yarborough, Betty and Bobby Lee, Claudia and George Braddock, all of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Murry and Ruby Norwood of Hartsville, R. A. Norwood, Marvin and Judy Norwood, all of Darlington, Clarence and Louise Norwood of Florence; grandchildren (spouses) , Char P. (Stephen) Brown, Russ (Miriam) Norwood, Tennille Petty, Spencer (Jessica) Petty, Kevin Norwood, Haydon Norwood; great-grandchildren, Gavin Brown and Daniel Norwood. He was preceded in death by his daughter Laura N. Petty.

Surviving are her husband, Jean Mosley Fletcher of Hartsville; son, Ronald J. Fletcher of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lillian Amber and Barry Woods of Hartsville, Amber Denise and Ron Pickle of Atlanta, Ga., Edith Sissy Fletcher of Atlanta, Jean Marie Fletcher and Andrew Lange of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; sisters, Mickey Stockdale, Ann Kanaroi of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother, Terry Amber of Pittsburg, Pa.; twelve grandchildren, Ian Wesley, Ray Pate Jr., Amber Jean Garvey, Kyle Pate, Kristen Bishop, Justin Pate, Cy Fletcher, Iann Fletcher, Jenica Fletcher, Dillon Garvey, Boone Garvey, Barry Lynn Woods, Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Gage Fenton.
LAUREN BOITEAU
Born in Upper Montclair, N.J., Lauren came to Hartsville in 1991, attended Thomas Hart Academy, graduated from Hartsville High School, where she participated in the marching band and jazz band, and had enrolled as a freshman at USC Columbia to pursue a major in journalism and mass communication. She leaves her parents, Ruth and Richard Boiteau, brothers Tim and Matt, sister-in-law Jean, her maternal grandmother, Edith O'Hara, aunts, uncles and cousins throughout the Northeast and friend since kindergarten and college roommate, Morgan Dampier. The family cannot adequately thank the many friends that helped Lauren over the years.
A celebration of her life was held on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Hartsville, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution in her name to the Hartsville SC YMCA, PSC Partners Seeking a Cure (www.pscpartners.org) , The Gift of Life Trust or the music program at St. Luke UMC.
BETTY LEE BROACH
Mrs. Broach died Monday, Sept. 4, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late John Friestein Isgett and Lois Gainey Isgett Driggers. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Surviving are her husband, Herman Borey Broach of the home; son, Calvin Broach of Hartsville; daughter, Kathy (Gerry) Burkett of Hartsville; sister, Vivian Page of Aynor; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
MARY L. TOMES
Mrs. Tomes, who died Sept. 6, was born in Ann Arbor, Mich., a daughter of Joanne Bagley Hopkins.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Hinson, and mother of Hartsville; stepfather, Larry Davis Hopkins Sr., of Mich.; two daughters, Cynthia Marie and Katlyn Kay Hinson; a son, Robert Dean Hinson of Hartsville; two sisters, Tabatha Jean Truax and Margaret Mae Hawks; a brother, Larry Davis Hopkins Jr.; maternal grandmother, Margaret Mae Bagley, all of Mich.
ELIZABETH LAWSON
Mrs. Lawson died Tuesday morning, Aug. 29, at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence. Born in Camden, on March 10, 1933, she was a daughter of the late James Irving and Elizabeth Gladden Pearce. She moved to Darlington with her family in 1945, graduating from St. John's High School in 1951 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Winthrop College, obtaining a degree in business.
Mrs. Lawson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a devout Christian, very active in the life of her church, Trinity Methodist, in Darlington, where she served in many varied capacities. She was the long time president of Grove Hill cemetery. Mrs. Lawson accompanied her husband, and was a vital part of many Clemson University, Farm Bureau, U.S. and State Department of Agriculture, and other agricultural events over the last 50 years. Surviving in addition to her husband, Laurie C. Lawson, to whom she had been married
for 53 years, are one daughter, Betty Coke L. (Perry) Thompson of Darlington; three sons, Marvin I. (Brigette) Lawson, William E. (Laura) Lawson, and James H. (Lisa) Lawson, all of Darlington; ten grandchildren, Fields Norwood, Laurie Elizabeth Gregg, Lawson Gregg, Caroline Coke Lawson, Elizabeth Pearce Lawson, Mary Adair Lawson, Julia Banks Lawson, Claire Hemphill Lawson, Kate Hemphill Lawson, and James Laurie (Jay) Lawson; one sister, Mary P. (John) Wells of Seabrook Island; and two nephews, John B. Wells Jr. and J. Bennett Wells.
