Valerie Mills of Jonesville died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.
Ferol Cagle Chalk
Ferol Cagle Chalk, 76, of 101 Balsam St., widow of William Henry Chalk, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at 9:25 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Chalk was born in Union County on March 27, 1927, a daughter of the late Allen and Bessie McGaha Cagle. She was a member of the Union Church of God.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Ray and Martha J. Chalk of Gaffney; four sisters, Shelia Crocker of Santuc, Peggy Turner of Jonesville, Juanita Lawson of Spartanburg and Joan Medford of Greer; a brother, the Rev. Leamon Cagle of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Michael Alman, Miranda Alman, Kevin Ray Chalk and Alisha Renea Griffin; four great-grandchildren, Brennon Tyler Hambright, Kaleb Hunter Griffin, Megan Alman and Seth Jordan Scruggs.
Mrs. Chalk was predeceased by two daughters and a son, Rebecca Alman, Janie Faye Chalk, and David Chalk. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Union Church of God conducted by Pastor Alton Stone. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 3 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her sister, Shelia Crocker, 652 Strother Road, Santuc community. Memorials may be made to the Union Church of God Building Fund, 1113 Thompson Blvd., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Patricia W. Englund
RIVERSIDE, Calif. Patricia C. Woods Englund died at her home in Riverside on Sunday, June 8, 2003. Surviving are two daughters, Ann Maree Canada of Union and Joanie Louis Englund of Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren, Danny Canada, Melissa Jones and Kurt Jones; a great-grandchild, Joyda Canada, and a cousin, Art Woods of Franklin, N.C.
A memorial service will be held next week at the Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Chapel in Riverside with cremation following. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Her daughters will be at Mrs. Englund's home until June 22.
After June 22 they will be at their respective homes: Ann, at 623 New Hope Church Road, Jonesville, S.C. 29353 and Joanie, at 7354 Cloud Court, Caldwell, Idaho, 83607. The Acheson and Graham Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Ila C. Price Jr.
SPARTANBURG Ila Curtis Price Jr., 90, of 1305 Boiling Springs Road, Greer, formerly of Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at National Healthcare of Greenville. A native of Union, he was the son of the late Ila Curtis Price, Sr., and Hattie Wood Price and the husband of the late Georgia Gowan Price.
He was a retired cotton broker and partner in Kennedy and Price, and was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church of Spartanburg. He was an avid golfer, a frequent participant in tournaments at the Spartanburg Country Club, and once scored a hole-in-one. He was a Commissioner and Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a member of the Southeastern Cotton Merchants Association. He served as a U.S. Army Corporal in World War II in Italy and France and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Survivors include three sons, Ila Curtis Price, III of Columbia, Johnny Price of Greenville and Stephen Gowan Price of Annapolis, Md.; two daughters, Mary Ann Price Hall of Atlanta, and Patricia Price Yates of New Zealand; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Cal Vick.
Visitation will be after 7 p. m. Friday at the home of Pam Scurry, 8 Sirrine Drive, Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Senior Action Center, 402 East McBee Ave., Greenville, S.C. 29601. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Pamela Gantt
BELVEDERE Entered into rest on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, Mrs. Pamela Gantt, of Rosemary Lane, Belvedere. Surviving are her parents, the Rev. W.L. Brown and Mrs. Hazel McDade Brown of North Augusta; two daughters, Julie Gantt and Kristy Byrd, both of Warrenville; a brother, David Brown of Greer; two sisters, Jenny Thatcher of North Augusta and Melissa Sarchelt of Clearwater; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Gantt was a real estate agent, and broker and a member of Clearwater First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Oscar Barrow and the Rev. John Bolin officiating. Interment will be in Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Will Brown, Taylor Brown, Ryan Brown, Chris Thatcher, Steve McDade and William Mead. Friends may call at the residence of her sister, Jenny Thatcher, 348 Blanchard Road, North Augusta, and today from 7 until 9 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home, U.S. Highway No. 1, Langley.
Rev. Broadus E. Hollingsworth
EASLEY The Rev. Broadus Edward Hollings-worth, 59, of 2232 Powdersville Road, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at his home. Born in Union, the Rev. Hollingsworth was the son of Mary Sue Inman Wynn of Greenwood and the late Broudes Hollingsworth. He was the Pastor of Deliverance Tabernacle Church of God.
Surviving in addition to his mother are: his wife, Kathy Holsonback Hollingsworth of the home; a son, Matthew Ryan Hollingsworth of the home; three sisters, Phyllis H. Lyerly, Edna H. Cantrell and Bonnie Hollingsworth, all of Greenwood, and his step-father, Talmadge Wynn of Greenwood. In addition to his father, Rev. Hollingsworth was predeceased by a son, Joshua Edward Hollingsworth.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Deliverance Tabernacle Church of God. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Matthew Ryan Hollingsworth Fund, c/o Peoples National Bank, Powdersville Branch, P.O. box 1989, Easley, S.C. 29641. Family members are at the home where they will receive friends. Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown is assisting the family with arrangements.
Madeline T. Howard
Madeline T. Howard, formerly of Charlotte, passed away on June 6, 2004 at her home in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. She was born on June 20, 1915 in Winston-Salem N.C. She was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Yona Teague of Union. She was a member of the 1937 Union High School graduation class and enjoyed attending class reunions.
Madeline married T. Edison Howard of Charlotte in December of 1946 and was a 20-year Air Force wife who lived in numerous states as well as London, England and Okinawa, Japan. Following her husband's retirement from the military, she moved to Charlotte where she spent many years renovating her beloved turn-of-the century house in Dilworth.
Though retired, she and her husband continued their love of travel both nationally and internationally. She was known to be a woman of many talents that included dress design, gardening and numerous other creative handiwork endeavors. Once retired, she found a new interest in taking woodworking classes at Central Piedmont Community College. Along with her husband and children, she displayed this new talent by lovingly renovating an old farm house in Ashe County that she filled with her woven rugs, numerous pieces of furniture and hand tinned kitchen cabinets.
In 1994, she and her husband moved to Fuquay-Varina, N.C.. to be near their two children and one grandchild. Surviving relatives are a son, Thomas E. Howard, Jr. and wife Elvira Carpenter Howard and granddaughter Alanna V. Howard of Youngsville, N.C.; a daughter, Annis Howard Davis, and her husband, James "Top" Davis of Holly Springs, N.C.. a sister,Josephine Neely and husband Jack of Lumberton, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Illinois.
Graveside services are at the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery West, Freedom Drive, Charlotte, N.C., at 2 pm on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to Hospice of Wake County at 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.
Flora Mae Teague Owens
Flora Mae Teague Owens, 79, of Charlotte, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at her home after a long fight with cancer. A graveside service was held May 10 at Oaklawn Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Woolery officiating. A native of Union, Mrs. Owens was a 1941 graduate of Union High School and worked as a secretary for several years before her marriage. She and her husband were co-owners of Carolina Brace. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where she was president of the Fellowship Sunday School class, served as secretary of the Finance Committee and was active in WMU.
Mrs. Owens wrote a column for Weekly East, which later became The Leader. She was a member of the Charlotte Writer's Club. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Thomas S. Owens; three sons, David M. Owens of Birmingham, Ala., William Timothy Owens of Fort Mill and Joseph Christopher Owens of Albemarle, N.C.; a daughter, Yona Rebecca Owens of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Josephine Neely of Lumberton, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church building fund, 8947 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28227 or to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204. What was written so many years ago about Flora in her high school annual still holds true today, "Her sunny disposition and kindness endear her to everyone."
