Mr. Huggins died Sunday, Oct. 8, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Sumter County, son of the late Coley Ruthan and Maude Prescott Huggins. He served his country with the United States Air Force and had retired after 34 years with DuPont, where he was a member of the 25 Year Club. He was married
to the late Christine Windham Huggins. Mr. Huggins was a member of the Woodmen of the World and enjoyed hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and James Harrell III of Belgium, Christy and William Tuck of Darlington, Alison and Jeff Brooks of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Tyler Harrell, Cole Harrell, Madeline Tuck and Brad Brooks; two sisters, Marydell (Ernest) Griggs of Ashwood and Carolyn 'Kink' (Elbert) Hancock of Hartsville; and one brother, Larry (Romell) Huggins of Ashwood.

ANNIE T. ELLIOTT
Mrs. Elliott, widow of William 'Bill' Elliott, died Thursday, Oct. 5. Born in Laurinburg, N.C., she was a daughter of the late James L. and Blanche Reynolds Sutherland. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she served as a secretary for 25 years. She was an active member of the Civinettes for 30 years where she was active in producing the Halloween Carnival. After retirement, she enjoyed delivering Meals On Wheels for several years. She was a faithful visitor to shut-ins from her church and neighborhood.
Surviving are her son, William B. Elliott of Boston, Mass.; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Claud Crowder of Hartsville; brother, H. Laurin Sutherland of Laurinburg, N.C. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James L. Sutherland Jr. and W. Reynolds Sutherland.
ELIZABETH D. HOWARD
Mrs. Howard, widow of Olin J. Howard Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 4, at her home. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Edward Dixon and the late Minnie Estelle Howard Dixon. She was retired from Campbell's Soup Co. and was a member of Faith Outreach Assembly Church. Mrs. Howard was a loving mother.
Survivors include seven children, Victoria Butler of Ala., Margaret Dancy of Sumter, Brenda Watford of Hartsville, Olin J. Howard Jr. of Sumter, Joseph Howard of Alabama, Linda Barkley of Dalzell, and Beverly Howard of Sumter; one brother, Thomas Dixon of Florida; three sisters, Beatrice Dixon of North Carolina, Miriam Dixon of Sumter, and Dianne McElveen of Hartsville; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christina Anne Dancy; a brother, Edward Dixon; and a sister, Edith Dixon.
Pallbearers were Luther Lee, Trapper Lee, Steven Turner, James Dancy Jr., Allen Parker, and Bradley Howard.

RUSSELL E. GANDY
Mr. Gandy died Sunday, Oct. 8. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of James C. Gandy and Lynn Hamrick and Ralph Boles. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. A 1999 graduate of Hartsville High School, he attained a degree in welding from Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was formerly employed with Home Depot where he received numerous awards of merit for his dedicated service.
Surviving are his father of Hartsville; mother and step-father of Florence; sister, Misty Gandy of Hartsville; brother, Brad Gandy of Hartsville; aunt and uncle, Deborah and Bert Simpson of Hartsville; cousins, Henry Simpson of Ahoskie, N.C., B.J. Simpson of Virginia Beach, Va.; paternal grandparents, Jean Gandy and the late J. W. Gandy of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, Jack E. and Gloria Hamrick of Little River.

JESSIE 'TOY' CLARK
Jessie 'Toy' Byrd Clark was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical center after many months of failing health.
Jessie Clark was born Dec. 1, 1912, to Dan and Victoria Lincoln Byrd of the Hopewell section of Darlington. She received her education in the Darlington County Public School system. As a young woman, she joined in holy matrimony to Willie Clark. After many years together, he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1993. This union was blessed with two sons, William E. Clark of Darlington and Sylvester 'Buddy' Clark, who preceded her in death; one daughter, Thelma C. Lamb of Darlington. Seven siblings also preceded her in death.
Jessie lived in New Jersey for more than 50 years. There she raised her children, worked and cultivated her skills in fashion designing and dressmaking.
Jessie 'Toy' was baptized at age 8 years old in the New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to New Jersey she became affiliated with the Fountain Baptist Church of Summit. She was an active member of the Usher Board, the Women's Guild, Deaconess Board and Missionary Board. While residing in New Jersey, she was an active participant of NAFAD, head usher of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, and a life member of the Tri-City NAACP.
Upon returning to the Darlington area, and until her health began to fail, she became active in the Missionary Society and the Homebound Program of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
She leaves to celebrate her life along with her children, two brothers, Floyd Byrd of Hartsville and James E. (Evelyn Marie) Byrd of Florence; two sisters, Elma B. Davis of Columbia and Harriett Lee (Samuel) Lewis of Darlington; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and close relatives.
VIRGINIA A. SANDERS
Mrs. Sanders died Sunday, Oct. 8, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ezekiel Scott and Rosa Admill. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Greater Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Lori Ann Sanders-Gattison of Hartsville; three sons, Richard L. (Linda) Admill of Alpharetta, Ga., Davey Sanders of Society Hill, and Terrance Sanders of Hartsville; one sister, Janie Mae Kinley of Society Hill; two sisters-in-law, Mattie Admill of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Hilda Hendrix of Lamar; one brother-in-law, Allen Gilbert of Hartsville; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
NATASHA BROOKS
Natasha, who died Oct. 12, was born in Marietta, Ga., a daughter of Wilson E. Hunt Jr. and the late Annette Stratton Hunt.
Surviving are her father of Hartsville; son, Billy Brooks Jr. of Hartsville; maternal aunts, Wayne S. (Harry) Wallace of Hartsville, Lucy S. (the Rev. Sam) Johnson of Lakeview; maternal uncle, Sidney J. (Betty) Stratton of Hartsville; paternal aunts, Rebecca (Ronnie) Clark, Penelope (Charles) Ingram, of Hartsville.
CHRISTIE GRAY
Christie died Tuesday, Oct. 10, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born in Florence County, daughter of LaRue and Christine Hill Phillips. She graduated from Lamar High School and had worked as a secretary. She was a member of High Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her parents are two sons, John and Hunter Gray of Darlington; two brothers, Jerry (Robin) Phillips, Billy (Shirley) Phillips, all of Lamar; and a sister, Judy (Franklin) Fountain of Lamar.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ruey Phillips.
BLANCH JOHNSON
Mrs. Johnson passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington, daughter of the late Hollie and Nancy Dixon Johnson. Blanch was a nurse at Heritage Nursing Home for many years. She was of the Baptist Faith.
Surviving are her son, Anthony Anderson of Florence; a brother, Berlin 'Bubba' Johnson of Florence; two sisters, Belvann Dudley and Lillie Mae Erickson, both of Darlington.
WILLIAM McFARLAND SR.
Mr. McFarland died Tuesday, Oct. 10, in McLeod Hospital Hospice Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County. He was the loving son of the late Joe and Viola Cotton McFarland. He received his education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Spiritual Growth Ministries. He was also a retired employee of Sara Lee Hosiery.
Surviving are his wife, Berthena Robinson McFarland of Hartsville; eight children, Eric (Debra) McFarland of Florence, Michael McFarland of Atlanta, Ga., William McFarland Jr. of Columbia, Errol (Tawanna) Smith Melvin Hudson, Stacey McFarland, Selena (Timothy) Cooks and LaToya McFarland, all of Hartsville; one son-in-law, Timothy Edwards Sr. of Hartsville; four sisters, Lucille McFarland, Beatrice Ham and Lizzie McDaniel, all of Hartsville, Viola McFarland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Authur McFarland of Darlington; a special nephew, Kent McFarland of Hartsville; three special friends, Hattie Stephenson, Charles McPhail and Marcus Martin, all of Hartsville; 26 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
JOYCE McINVILLE
Mrs. McInville died Tuesday, Oct. 10, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington, daughter of the late Benny Lee Weatherford and Earline Purvis Weatherford Anderson. Joyce was a devoted and loving housewife who enjoyed selling Avon. She attended Mechanicsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Johnny McInville of Darlington; a daughter, Cindy (Buster) Weatherford of Darlington; two sons, Joel Matthews of Charlotte; Johnny McInville III, of Darlington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Eli (Margaret) Weatherford; Cecil Weatherford, all of Darlington; four sisters, Iona (Donald) Morse of Raleigh, N.C., Mary Frances McQueen, Lois Baird and Joanne Lyons, all of Darlington.
Mrs. McInville was preceded in death by brothers, Bennie, Thomas, Willie and Roy Weatherford, and sisters, Ruth Odom and Mildred Lewis.

JENNINGS SMITH
Mr. Smith died Friday, Oct. 20. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Beler Mae Wallace Smith. He graduated from Hartsville High School in 1971, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society, was an honorary member of the Red Fox Club and a member of P.A.L.S. (People Always Lending Support) for 14 years, serving as their assistant director for the past three years. He played church basketball and church softball. He coached t-ball and basketball and worked with the American Legion Baseball program for 34 years. He was a statistician for Hartsville High School Athletics for 30 years and Hartsville Middle School Athletics for 27 years. He was the sports writer for Darco News and Buyers Guide, the High School Sports Report, and the sports show on WSDC radio. He was awarded several accolades including: the Jaycees' 'Hartsville's Most Outstanding Young American' in 1985, the 'High School Sports Report Fan of the Year' in 1988, and Relay for Life's 'Sexiest Legs in Darlington County' for the past two years. He tutored many students, touched the lives of more than 18, 000 athletes, attended more than 8, 000 ballgames. He will be missed by all.
Surviving are his brothers and sister-in-laws, James and Betty Smith of Lamar, John Henry and Hattie Smith of McBee, Charles and LaVonde Smith of Murrells Inlet; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret Morrell, Jeanette and Ray Winburn, Patricia and Roy Flowers, all of Hartsville; adopted brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas and April Sellers, Jack O'neal; godchild, Jennings Rufznak; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Judy 'Mama Judy' Lyles.
RICHARD BOATWRIGHT
Mr. Boatwright died Friday, Oct. 20. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Blanche Oakley Boatwright Laundreaux and the late Ira Bill Boatwright. He was a charter member of Hartsville Calvary Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U. S. Marines Corps and the U. S. Army and was retired from the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Boatwright was also retired from Ina Bearing and the civil service at the Hartsville OMS Shop. He was a current and past commander of the DAV #47 and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie 'Cookie' Skipper Boatwright of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert 'Peanut' and Lori McElroy of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret and Roland O'Neal of Hartsville, Brenda Hodge of Cheraw; brother, C. R. Boatwright of Hartsville; grandchildren, Kimberly McElroy and Eric McElroy. .
