ROBERT ASHLEY JR.
Funeral services for Robert Allen Ashley Jr. age 32, were held on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at 3 p.m. at McDonald's Chapel Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Ashley was born in Ohio, a son of Robert A. Ashley Sr. and Darlene Whiteman McCaskill.

Surviving are his father of Akron, Ohio; mother of McBee; daughters, Hannah and Brooke Ashley of Oak Hill, W.Va.; brothers, Troy Ashley of Kershaw, David McCaskill of McBee; maternal grandparents, Sonny Ashley, Patricia Brake of Springfield, Ohio; and special friend, Crystal Kelly of Hartsville.

CHRISTOPHER CONTE
Christopher Lee Conte, 24, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006. The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Funeral plans will be announced later.

PEGGY GRAHAM
Graveside services for Margaret 'Peggy' Scollard Graham, 84, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mrs. Graham, widow of James Graham, died Sunday, Oct. 22. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., she was a daughter of the late George Henry and Mary Cory Scollard.

Surviving are her sister, Virginia Swenddal of Hemet, CA; niece, Jane Truett of Hartsville; great nephews and niece, T. E. 'Stoney' Truett III, L. W. 'Chip' Truett, Theresa Truett. She was predeceased by a son, James Graham II.

HAROLD GRIGGS
Funeral services for Harold Griggs, 59, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Greater Heights Baptist Church. The Revs. Darwin Cook and Danny Holley officiated, with burial in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Hospice, 202 S. Second St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Griggs died Sunday, Oct. 22. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Sara Hodges Griggs Lee and the late Russell Griggs. He attended Rivers of Living Waters Church. He was an avid fisherman and a wonderful father, son, husband, and grandfather. He was especially proud of his grandson.

Surviving are his wife, Wendy Griggs of Hartsville; son and fiance', Harold Richard Griggs and Megan Gray; daughter and son-in-law, Barbie Griggs and Keith Wilkes, all of Hartsville; mother, of Scranton; sisters and brother-in-law, Faye Beatrice 'Bea' and Johnny Byrd of Hartsville, Gail Swann of Bremen, Ga.; grandson, Zachary Wilks; nieces, Jennifer Byrd, Amanda Byrd; nephew, Jason Byrd. He was preceded in death by his brother Cecil A. Griggs.

ROBERT EWING
A memorial service for Robert 'Bob' S. Ewing, 86, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, N.C., with Dr. Grandy Perryman officiating, directed by Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines, N.C. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mr. Ewing died Tuesday, Oct. 24, of complications following heart surgery at FirstHealth, Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. He was a 55-year resident of Moore County. He was previously married to Ann Laurisen Mason from 1942 until her death in 1971, with whom he had six daughters.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Katherine Royster Ewing, formerly of Oxford, N.C.; children, Susan (Charles) Shabica of Winnetka, Ill., Fay Ewing of Highlands, N.C., Roberta (Edwin) Listerman of Richfield, N.C., Katherine 'Kit' (Edward) Mayor of Las Vegas, Nev., Marguerite 'Feeka' Ewing of Hartsville; Robert (Patti) Dellert of Greer, Katherine 'Katchy' (Stratton) Whitlow of Oxford, N.C., Jennifer (Stuart) Cameron of Apex, N.C.; grandchildren, Jonathan (Pamela) Shabica of Northfield, Ill., Andrew (Julie) Shabica of Cedarburg, Wis., Dana Shabica of Chicago, Ill., Elizabeth Dellert of London, England, Jesse Sandler of Las Vegas, Nev., Brian (Jennifer) Listerman of Nashville, Tenn., Adam (Robin) Listerman of Albermarle, N.C., Benjamin Listerman of Huntsville, Ala., Amy (Mike) Yirka and Dallas Rose Sandler, both of Baltimore, Md., Kelly Tighe of New York City, N.Y., Patrick Tighe of Greer, Thomas Whitlow and Taylor Whitlow both of Oxford, N.C., Duncan Cameron and McKenzie Cameron, both of Apex, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren.

BERNICE F. TEAL
PATRICK - Funeral services for Bernice Freeman Teal, 57, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at Brown Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. Donnie Faulkenbury and Vernon Lewis will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, Oct. 25, from 5-7 p.m. at the residence. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville MD 20852 or Brown Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Teal died Monday, Oct. 23. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Myrtle Warren Freeman Sr.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Carl E. 'Buck' Teal of Patrick; son, Sandy Teal of Patrick; daughter, Sheila Stephens of Patrick; sisters, Daisy Brazell of Camden, Margie Smith of Austin, Texas; brothers, G. W. Freeman of Florence, Chuck Freeman of Santee, Ricky Freeman and Michael Freeman, both of Hartsville; grandsons, John Stephens, Donald Stephens, Allen Teal, Austin Teal. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ted Freeman; sisters, Frances Hall and EttaRee Hensley.

CHARLES A. WALKER
Charles A. Walker, 63, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 810 N. Mary Street, Hartsville.

LEON HICKMON
EL PASO, Texas - Leon Hickmon, 41, formerly of Hartsville, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, in El Paso, Texas from injuries from an automobile accident. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

JUANITA HUDSON
LAMAR - Funeral services for Juanita Hudson were held on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at 3 p.m. at King Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church. The burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Michael Fullard, the pastor of King Emmanuel, officiated the services.

Ms. Hudson departed this life on Nov. 14, at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

She was born Oct. 15, 1955, in Darlington County, a daughter of James Hudson Sr. and the late Hattie J. Hudson. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and attended Spaulding High School. She was a devoted member of King Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lynchburg. Even though her health began to decline, Ms. Hudson was a kind and loving person who cared for her family and friends dearly. Her presence from among us will surely be missed.

Three of her brothers, Harry Lee Hudson, Baby Boy Hudson and David Lee Hudson, a sister, Rosa Lee Harris and her grandmother, Rosa Wright all preceded her in death. Her mother, Hattie J. Hudson also predeceased her.

Those left to cherish the precious memories of Juanita Hudson in addition to her father, James W. Hudson Sr., are two daughters, Kathy Hudson of Lamar, and Gwendolyn Hudson of Columbia; a son, Jerome Hudson of Columbia; four sisters, Rosa Mae Demonia of Winter Park, Fla., Dora Jones of Columbia, Daisy Bell (Robert) Ward and Lucille (Pearly) Gales, both of Lamar; five brothers, James (Dorothy) Hudson of Timmonsville, Woodrow (Brenda) Hudson of Moore, William (Frances) Hudson, Pastor John (Lula) Hudson and Curtis (Edna Mae) Hudson, all of Lamar; six grandchildren, Quazek Hudson, Kenneth Hudson, Travion Hudson, Shaquasha Hudson, Keora Hudson and Desmeion Hudson; 29 nieces and nephews; 50 grand-nieces and nephews; 19 great-grand-nieces and nephews; her significant other, Clifton Best, and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.

ELEASE E. MUNGO
Graveside services for Elease Edwards Mungo, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 26, 2006, at Twin City cemetery, Loris, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mungo died Monday, Oct. 14. Born in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Lou Williams Edwards. She was a member of Chapel By The Sea in North Myrtle Beach, and was retired from B. C. Moore after many years of service.

Surviving are her husband, Boyd Mungo Sr. of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Freda and Michael Morris of Pawley's Island, Susie and Kevin Benton of Hartsville; step-sons and step-daughters-in-law, Willis Allen and Sherry Mungo of Denver, N.C., Boyd Randolph and Teresa Mungo Jr. of Denver, N.C.; sisters, Sallie Mae Tyler, and Elnita Shelly, both of Loris, Lucille Shellnutt of Tabor City, N.C.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Bobby Buffkin; daughter, Mary Alice Davis; brother, J. D. Edwards; sisters, Pauline Galloway, and Colene Ford.

RUTH PARROTT
Funeral services for Ruth Newsome Parrott, 92, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tony Medlin officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church Building Fund, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Parrott, widow of Rex Parrott, died Saturday, Nov. 18. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late George Bennett and Dannie Kelly Newsome Sr. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, the Dannie Newsome Circle, and the Adult Sunday School class. She was also a charter member of Club 55 Dance Club, a charter member of Kalmia Gardens Garden Club, a member of the Hartsville Civinette Club for many years, and a grade mother for many years at Carolina Elementary School.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Jerry Sansbury of Hartsville; granddaughter and spouse, Traci and Troy Rogers of Hartsville; great-granddaughter, Makki Watson. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lida DuBose, Juanita Melton, Vada Gore, Mayward Kline; brothers, G. B. Newsome Jr., and Kelly Newsome.

JACK D. SMITH
LAMAR - Funeral services for Jack D. Smith, 72, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, in the Lamar Chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Lamar cemetery, officiated by the Rev. John Stephenson.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, Nov. 18, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Robert and Etta Rogers Smith. He was retired from Coca-Cola Consolidated and enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. Mr. Smith was a member of Will of Faith Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Irene 'Dolly' Howell Smith of Lamar; five sons, Butch (Linda) Smith, Randy (Renee) Smith, all of Hartsville, Jack (Debbie) Smith, Rusty Logan (Bobbie Acord) , Joey Logan, all of Lamar; eight grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Carolyn) Smith of Timmonsville; and two sisters, Helen Welch of Darlington and Virginia Mixon of Bishopville.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brittany Smith, and brothers William, Bud and Jennings Smith.

ELIZABETH KISSIAH
Funeral services for Elizabeth Smith (Lib) Kissiah, 74, were held 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Revs. Ricky Bledsoe and Billy Gillium and Mrs. Olivia Brock officiated. Burial was in the Pine Ridge Holiness Church cemetery.

Lib, who died Nov. 17, was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Benjamin Lucas and Mary Galloway Smith. She was retired from Sonoco Products Co., a member of the Light of The Way Holiness Church and was a lifetime member of the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad. Surviving are her husband, Jessie Loraine (Pat) Kissiah of Hartsville; daughters, Mary (Frank) Williams of Hartsville, Joy (Joel) Oliver of Chesterfield; sons, Johnny Kissiah, Sidney (Cynthia) Kissiah of Hartsville; sisters, Sadie Bass, Vandetta (Tommy) Livingston of Hartsville; brother, Jack (Martha) Smith of Hartsville; grandchildren, Michelle Shoemake (Ricky) Byrd of Hartsville, Jason (Jessie) Oliver of Chesterfield, Chris and Matt Kissiah of Hartsville; great-grandchildren, Brenton Shoemake of Hartsville, Baylor Oliver of Chesterfield; godchildren, Beth Johnson, Janice Gainey of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

JAMES HARRIOT
COLUMBIA - Homegoing services for James Harriot Jr. of Columbia were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Right Direction Christian Center with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens, directed by Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Harriot died Saturday, Nov. 4. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late James and Marvell (Bradley) Harriot. A veteran of the U. S. Army, James was a self-employed insurance agent and a dedicated member of Right Direction Christian Center.

Surviving are his loving wife, Rosalind Jamison Harriot; son, Jeremy Harriot; daughter, Stacey (Darren) J. Dixon; brother, Robert Harriot; sisters, Lovenia Colvin, Earline (Elder Otis) McNeill, Janie Harriot, Marvell H. Clyburn, Dorothy Harriot, Phyllis Harriot and Melissa Joyce Byrd.

ELLEN GRIGGS
Funeral services for Ellen Teal Griggs, 81, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. William Griggs will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Nov. 10, from 6 to 8 at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Griggs, widow of Bobby Griggs, died Nov. 9. She was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Henry and Minnie Freeman Teal. Mrs. Griggs was a member of Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Linda (Johnny) Mitchell, Deanne (Johnny) Johnson, Ethell (Nioka) Jones, all of Hartsville; son, Randall (Gale) Griggs of Chesterfield; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Eugene and Laverne Griggs.

SAMUEL BOYKIN
BETHUNE - Funeral services for Samuel McKinnon 'Kinney' Boykin, 60, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Bethune Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jimmy Holley, James Hopkins and Neal Gainey officiated. Burial will be in the Turkey Creek cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Boykin who died Nov. 5, was born in Bethune, a son of Sarah Ruth McKinnon Boykin and the late Dewey Samuel Boykin. He was employed with Almond Forest, served in the National Guard, was a member of the Pleasant Hill Hunting Club, Bethune Presbyterian Church, and was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and to a host of friends. Surviving are his wife, Dianne Tiller Boykin; mother; son, Jason Samuel Boykin, all of Bethune; daughter and son-in-law Angelia Boykin and Kevin Todd Rickard of Sumter; brother, Dewey Neil Boykin of Bethune; granddaughter, Baileigh Madison Rickard; grandson, Harrison Todd Rickard of Sumter; special companion, his dog Nubbie. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
