Deacon Davis was born in Hartsville, the son of the late Emanuel “Monk” and Rosa Davis. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. He previously worked for Milliken Mills and Sonoco and retired in January 2002 from Cheraw Yarn Mills after 26 continuous years of service. He received several awards and represented his company in Washington, D.C., at a round table discussion with U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings and U.S. Rep. John Spratt.
In 1962, he joined Pentacostal Assembly Church in Lydia under the leadership of Bishop Leroy Robinson. In 1972, he joined Nazareth Apostolic Church after his wife, Bishop Vera M. Davis, became pastor. He was elected to the Deacon Board in 1974 and also served as the adult Sunday school teacher before becoming Sunday school superintendent. He was also president of the adult choir.
In 1964, Deacon Davis was married
to the former Vera Covington, and this union was blessed with six children. They also adopted two other children. They were blessed with an abundance of love and opened their home to many other families who needed the security that their family could provide. One of his brothers, L.W. Davis, and two sisters, Mattie Robinson and Lillian Johnson, preceded him in death.
Surviving to cherish the memory of Deacon Charles Henry Davis are his wife, Bishop Vera M. Davis; his children, Tina McElveen, Angela D. (Zachary) Forte, Charlene R. (John) Webb, Stephanie Faison, Steven L. Davis, Charles B. Davis; his adopted daughters, Margaret McCall and Tynashia Mayfield; his brothers-in-law, Bishop Leroy Robinson and Bishop Joe L. Robinson; his sisters-in-law, Mary Davis, Jonnie Davis and Helen Marshall; his daughter-in-law, Shana Lucky Davis; his goddaughter, Minister Penny Damon; an adopted family member, Cynthia Cuffie; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many other children that were adopted and cared for over the years, many other relatives and very dear friends.
DAVID ERVIN LAW SR.
Mr. Law was born in Darlington County, son of the late William P. and Dorothy Ervin Law Sr. He served his country with the United States Army
ROGER WINBURN
Mr. Winburn died Sunday, May 11. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Allen Kenneth and Doris Truett Winburn. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the Trinidad team for two years. He was a graduate of Florence-Darlington Technical College and was employed at Sonoco Products Co. in the millwright shop.
Surviving are his wife, Kim Brown Winburn of Hartsville; sons, Steven Winburn of Columbia, Roger Winburn of San Diego, Calif., Kenny Winburn of Hartsville; father and mother of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Robin and George Atkins of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Allen Winburn.
MARY SUE MOZINGO
Mrs. Mozingo, widow of Eldridge N. Jordan Sr. and Hubert L. Mozingo, died Sunday, May 11. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George Wallace and Ada Watford Fields. She was a member of House of Prayer Holiness Church and was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Mildred Jordan of Hartsville, Howard “Bill” and Jane Jordan of Bishopville, William Leroy and Barbara Jordan of Cassatt, Joe and Bonnie Jordan of Hartsville, Kenneth and Grace Jordan of Rego Park, N.Y.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sara G. Stokes of Lydia, Blanche and Broadus Kelley of Hartsville, Emmie Sue and Bobby Baird of Camden, Dot and Randy Johnson of Hartsville; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Eldridge Norman Jordan Jr., and her daughter, Patricia Jordan.
EDELL JOHNSON
Mrs. Johnson, widow of Glenn Johnson, died Sunday, May 11. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late James L. and Emma Steen Jones. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Society.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Alvin and Anne Johnson of Hartsville, Michael Glenn and Debbie Johnson of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Ann and Jerry Holley of McBee; sister, Eloise Bullard of Hartsville; grandchildren (spouse) , Jerry D. “Punk” Holley Jr., Ronald (Debra) Holley, Danny C. (Naomi) Holley, William Johnson, Greg (Greta) Johnson, Lori Anne (Shon) Rivers, Michael (Brandi) Johnson Jr.; nine great-grandchildren.
NORMAN BARKER
Mr. Barker died Friday, May 9. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he was a son of the late Leon and Ethel Adams Barker. He was united in marriage to the late Wilma Grace Thurman Barker on June 29, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gary and Patricia Barker of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Larry Morrissey of Carmel, Ind., Patti and Richard Boggess of Newton, Iowa; grandchildren, Terry Bell, Linda Morrissey, Jonathan Morrissey, Amy Barlage, Jacqie Boggess, John Barker, Kelly Galloway, Janet Oyer, Michael Smith, Marie Hatchell, Sereata Lucky, Eric Barker, Shalonda Barker, Christina Barker, Christopher Barker, Cheyenne Barker, Zachary Barker, Amanda Barker, Jacqueline Barker, Christian Barker; 13 great-grandchildren.
FRED W. ATKINSON JR.
Known to many as “The Silver Fox, ” he was born in Hartsville to the late Fred and Elsie Atkinson and attended the University of South Carolina where he was captain of the tennis team and member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity. After serving in the 320th Air Transport Squadron, Le Borge’ Airport Base in Paris, France, during World War II, he married
life-long sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth Denny, in 1950. Fred worked in management for the airline catering services industry and opened a family-owned restaurant in Jacksonville, Fla. After returning “home” to South Carolina with his wife and four children in 1970, he worked for the South Carolina Department of Corrections as the Director of Support Services until retirement.
In 1977, while working for the Department of Corrections, Fred, with his wife Mary, son John, and daughter Ann, opened the Silver Fox Tennis Club in Irmo. The club was his pride and joy for many years and served a multitude of tennis enthusiasts. With his passion for the University of South Carolina, he was a true and devoted Gamecock fan and attended games and events for as long as he was physically able. Towards the end of his life he was lovingly cared for at his residence by son John, and Jamie Youmans, a daughter of his heart and true angel to whom the rest of his family will be eternally grateful.
Surviving are his sons, Fred W. Atkinson III of Marietta, Ga., and John Denny Atkinson of Irmo; daughter, Ann Crandall (Jay) of Bonita Springs, Fla.; grandchildren, Melissa Rene Horn (Jude) of Memphis, Tenn., Christie Marie Kauffman (Chris) of Columbia and Elle Crandall of Bonita Springs, Fla. Also surviving are his two sisters, Mrs. Jean Donnelley of Smyrna, Ga. and Mrs. Geraldine Moore of Johnson City, Tenn. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Denny Atkinson and daughter, Beverly Jean Atkinson Huff.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow St., Irmo. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

SAM JOHNSON
Mr. Johnson was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Hilton Johnson, Sr. and Hessie Thomas Johnson. He was retired from Newsome Automotive.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Beasley Johnson; daughter, Wendy (Tommy) Smith; adopted son, Tony Hutchinson; brother, Hilton (Junior) Johnson, all of Hartsville; sister, Barbara Ann Threatt of Camden; grandchildren, Justin and Jeremy Smith of Hartsville.

BOYD SAMUEL HILL SR.
Mr. Hill died Wednesday, May 7. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Arthur R. and Cora Blackmon Hill. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Hill will be remembered as a mason, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion. He retired from the Clio City Council, the Clio Fire Department and the Clio Rescue Squad. He also retired from Clio Farm Equipment.
Surviving are his wife, Shula Greene Hill of Clio; son, Boyd Samuel “Sammy” Hill Jr. of Bennettsville; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Gene Stromberg of Clio; sister, Lois Ford of Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Debbie Car-penter, Michael Stromberg, Keith Stromberg, Scott Stromberg, Jennifer Hill; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 11 self-adopted grandchildren.
IRIS GRIGGS
Mrs. Griggs died Wednesday, May 7. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie P Winburn Sr. and the late Ruby Rivers Winburn.
Surviving are her loving husband of 54 years, Hubert W. Griggs of Hartsville; she was the most loving mother of her sons and daughters-in-law, Wilford and Joanne Griggs of McBee, Marvin and Marlene Griggs of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Ivy Blue of Hartsville, Lisa and Robert McKenzie of McBee; sisters and brother-in-law, Jewell and C. G. Gainey of Hartsville, Juanita Freeman of Hartsville; brother and sister-in-law, Olin P. and Carole Winburn of Hartsville; the greatest of grandmothers to her grandchildren, Cam and Amy Blue, Robbie McKenzie, Marty and Julia McKenzie, Greg and Mica Griggs, Matthew and Sam Griggs, Tabitha Faile, Charity and Stacy Davis; great-grandchildren, Noah McKenzie, Kaitlin and Tanner Davis, Dawson and Payton Griggs, Austin and Conner Faile, Morgan Griggs, Baby Boy Blue. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lonnie Winburn Jr.

Mrs. Brooks died Monday, May 5. She was born in Hartsville a daughter of the late Ross and Mary Davidson Rivers. She was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church. She and her late husband Billy, owned and operated Brooks Lawn & Garden for more than 30 years.
Surviving are grandchildren, Billy and Zim Brooks of Hartsville, Crystal Hodge of Darlington; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Brooks of Hartsville; great-grandchildren Ariana, Briana, Caleb, Delaney Hodge of Darlington, Billy Brooks II, Dakota Brooks of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by sons Ronnie and Donnie Brooks; brothers, Kenny, Charles, Ernest and Lorraine Rivers.
SUE SMITH
Mrs. Smith died Sunday, May 4. Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of Louise Langston Adams and the late Willard Adams. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery on Sunday and Wednesday. She was an owner of Top Quality Lawn Care LLC, worked at Quiet Brook Produce, Uncle Bert's Produce and PIM Farms for many years. She loved pets, kids, and was a devoted wife and mother.
Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Derrick Smith of Hartsville; son, Reagan Smith of Hartsville; daughters, Kristen Smith of Hartsville, Jarrett Smith of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat Blackmon of Darlington, Joyce and Gary Jones of Darlington, Jeanne and Von Tolson of Lamar, Faye Dixon of Darlington, Denise Poole of Dovesville; brothers and sister-in-law, Richard and Lou Adams of Dovesville, Danny Adams of Dovesville; mother-in-law, Amelia Smith of Hartsville; special friend, Debbie Vazquez of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her father, Willard Adams, and her sister, Gail Griggs.
PAULINE JENKINS
Pauline, the daughter of the late John Gabriel and Mary Eliza Jones Denny and the wife of the late Thomas Daniel Jenkins, was born in Hartsville on Sept. 4, 1915. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, graduated from Coker College, helped her father in and later managed Denny Brothers Jewelry Store, and taught in Darlington County Schools. For many years she was a Pilot Club member and hospital volunteer, and for all of her years she wanted to be a true friend to those she met.
She was predeceased by her husband and by her brother Charles Edward Denny. Surviving are many relatives blessed by her life; among these are her sister-in-law, Rue Denny; nieces and nephews, Mary Esther Denny, Pat and Jerry Burkett, John and Neita Denny, Joy and Randy Seif, Jackie Ray and Phil Anderson
