McBEE — Funeral services for Elaine Bowers Poston, 83, who died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, were held on Monday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. at McBee Baptist Church. Burial was in Providence cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. Mrs. Poston was born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Ervin and Mollie Hall Bowers.
Survivors include her sons, Allen Poston of Cheraw and Steven Poston of McBee; daughters Dorothy Gainey of Rock Hill and Virginia Linn of Cheraw; sisters, Myrtle Hunter of Rock Hill and Doris Dixon of Chesterfield; several grandchildren and great–grandchildren.
PAULINE FLOWERS
DARLINGTON — Pauline Howle Flowers of Darlington died Oct. 24, 2004. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today, Oct. 27, at Black Creek Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by the Revs. Randy Alan Woods, Sr., Rodger D. Martin and Dr. Olin Marsh Whitener Jr. and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Cleveland and Elizabeth Ray Gardner Howle. She was married
for 59 years to the late Paul Timmons Flowers. She was a graduate of Dovesville Grammar School and St. John's High School and had attended Anderson College. She had retired as a clerk from the South Carolina Department of Health.
Mrs. Flowers was an active lifelong member of Black Creek Baptist Church. She was a member of and served on many organizations at the church, including the Lucy Smith Circle, the Ruth Davis Sunday School Class and the church choir.
She was also active in many civic organizations in her community, including the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 1986 and served as president and vice–president. She was a volunteer at The Lord Cares Ministry where she held a board position and had been a volunteer at Southland Hospital. She was a member of the Darlington Chapter of the D.A.V. for many years; also, the Railroad Retirement Club of CSX; Young at Heart; American Legion Auxiliary and Iris Garden Club.
Mrs. Flowers was widely known for her love of cooking and gardening, an ability she loved to share with others. Her life was dedicated to the service of God and man.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Paul Timmons Flowers Jr., and Brenda Flowers of Andrews; two daughters, Linda Anne Flowers of Florence and Janice F. Griggs of Darlington; seven grandchildren, Paul Timmons (Megan) Flowers III, Adrienne Brittany Flowers, Amber Sheh Owens, Winston Arbey Gainey, Francis Wayne Griggs Jr., Barbara Elizabeth Griggs, Cameron Massabeau Griggs; one great–grandchild, Lynn Anne Flowers; two sisters, Virginia Howle Rhodes of Hartsville and Gladys Howle Blackmon of Dovesville; and two brothers, James Edward Howle and Clifton Cleveland Howle Sr. both of Dovesville.
Serving as pallbearers are, Clifton Cleveland Howle Jr., Thomas Epaphraditus Howle, William James Howle, James Edward Howle, Frank McLeod Flowers Jr., Marshall Wellington Flowers, Damon Stegar Flowers, George Wilson Kirven and Wesley Franklin Woodard.

NOLEN GAINEY
Funeral services for Nolen J. Gainey, 81, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dr. Pat Orr and Grover Johnson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church Piano & Organ Fund, 2403 Ruby Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Gainey died Saturday, Oct. 23. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Akre and Bessie Griggs Gainey. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was retired from the Hartsville Bleachery and Sonoco Products Co.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Myrtle Johnson Gainey of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Ann and Fred Cromartie of Hartsville; sisters, Vera Gay of Wareham, Mass., Quin Johnson of Hartsville, Katie Hodge of Hartsville; granddaughters and spouses, Kim and Kenny Andrews, Carmen and Al Dean Davis; great–granddaughter, Logan Andrews.
LORENA JOHNSON
Graveside services for Lorena Josey Johnson, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at the residence. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Johnson, widow of Virgil Marion Johnson, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late James Arthur and Annie McCoy Josey. She was a long standing member of more than 60 years at Wesley United Methodist Church where she helped in the church nursery and Sunday school class. She loved her family, church and flower garden.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Virgil Arthur and Joyce Johnson of Pawley's Island; daughter, Nancy Jeanne Williams of Naperville, Ill.; sisters, Mary Josey Munn of Spartanburg, Virginia McIntosh of Hartsville; grandchildren, Scott Arthur Johnson of Potomac, Md., Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Charlotte, Leslie Joseph Williams of Naperville, Ill., Melissa Karen Bonow of Plainville, Ill.; eight great–grandchildren.
C.V. TALBERT
Funeral services for Cordy Verene C. V Talbert Jr., 74, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Beck will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Oct. 22, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Carolina's Hospice, 121 E. Cedar Street, Florence SC 29501.
Mr. Talbert died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Cordy Verene and Estelle Easterling Talbert. He was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church. He was retired from DuPont with 34 years of service and was owner and operator of Talbert Demolition and Renovation for over 40 years.
Surviving are his wife, Judith Byrd Talbert of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Elaine and Jim Stewart of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Ricky and Brenda Talbert of Dillon, Mitch Talbert of Hartsville, Todd and Pam Talbert of Hartsville; step–sons and spouses, Mark and Lisa Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, Brian and Carol Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, Scott and Natalie Bedenbaugh of Hartsville; 18 grandchildren; two great–grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first spouse, Gloria Malphus Talbert.
BYRIA L. SMITH
Mrs. Byria Louise Smith died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at 1801 Sherrills Mills Rd., Society Hill.
HELEN HARRELL BASS
Funeral services for Helen Harrell Bass, 63, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
Ms. Bass died Monday, Oct. 18. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Bill and Mary King Harrell. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and Belfast American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her daughter, Sherri (Ken) Washbon of Caneadea, N.Y.; sons: William (Peggy) Hancock of Hartsville and Rick (Joanna) Steen also of Hartsville; sisters, Margaret Crisp, Ann Gilbert and Faye King, all of Hartsville, Betty Oldfield of West Palm Beach, Fla., Carolyn Hampton of Melbourne, Fla., and Willie Tatum of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Garrett, Brandon, Paige and Kelly; and special friend, Pete Oliver.
DANNY GLENN SELPH
SUMTER — Funeral services for Danny Glenn Cotton Selph, 58, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore–Cannon–Stephens Funeral Home of Sumter Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 tonight, Oct. 22, at Elmore–Cannon–Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence, 740 Stratton Court.
Mr. Selph, husband of Sherri F. Selph, died Tuesday, Oct.19, 2004. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Raymond J. W. Selph and the late Beulah Dixon Selph. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and was an operating engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Surviving besides his wife, of 34 years, of Sumter are two daughters, Tina Floyd of the home and Toni Willetts of Effingham; a son, Keith Selph of the home; two brothers, Tony Selph of Columbia and Don Selph of Spring City, Tenn.; a sister, Betty Campbell of Dalzell; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steve Campbell, Mark Campbell, George Horne, Jimmy Evans, Tony Floyd, and Robbie Floyd.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Willetts and Ronnie Moore.

FRANK WEATHERFORD
DARLINGTON — Frank L. Weatherford, 71, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Weatherford was born in Dillon County, son of the late William Henry and Eva Kersey Weatherford. He served his country in the United States Air Force and had retired from Perfection American.
Surviving are two sons, Frank Weatherford, Jr. of Florence and Michael Weatherford of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Brenda Pipkin of Florence, Carol Cripps of San Antonio, Texas, and Carolyn Ortiz of Topeka, Kan.; a number of grandchildren and great–grandchildren; a sister, Mary (James) Langley of Darlington; and a brother, Curtis (Betty) Weatherford of Timmonsville; also, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Weatherford was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Bommer.
The family will be at the home of Mary and James Langley, 482 Anderson Drive, Darlington.
JAMES L. COPELAND
James Gerald L. Copeland was born June 9, 1929, in Darlington County, South Carolina, a son of the late John and Amelia Copeland. He departed this life on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. He was educated in the public schools of the Darlington County and was a member of the Church of God of Lamar.
James L. Copeland
Mr. Copeland served honorably in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country, he worked on the farms near his home and was also employed at Georgia–Pacific, formerly known as Dixie Cup Corp. in Darlington. He retired from there with more than 26 years of service. Mr. Copeland also worked for nearly five years at the Darlington County Recycling Center.
Mr. Copeland was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His kindness towards others will surely be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary L. Copeland of Lamar; three daughters, Cynthia D. Copeland and Cathy C. (Maurice) Bell, both of Lamar, and Thevera Copeland of Bishopville; four sons, Shelby Copeland off Woodbridge, Va., Rueben Copeland of Lamar, Demetrius (Darlene) Copeland of Portsmouth, Va., and Xavier Copeland of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Otis (Fostean) Copeland of Lamar, and the Rev Herbert (Lois) Copeland of Darlington; one sister, Loretta Copeland of Kingstree; a special niece, Pat Conner of Kingstree; three sisters–in–law, Evelyn (Willie) Dargan, Elizabeth (James) Greene and Jeannie (Emmett) Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and very dear friends.
VICKY LYNN HALL
CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Vicky Lynn Crowley Hall, 50, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Palmetto Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Hall died Wednesday, Oct. 13. She was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of Mary Jane Davis Crowley and the late Duland Crowley. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by a brother, Ferris O. Crowley.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas Edward Hall of the home; one son, Thomas Jason Hall of Medford, Mass.; one daughter, Kristi Dee Hall Jeffords and husband Kevin of Hartsville; mother, Mary Jane Crowley of Patrick; three brothers, Aaron B. and wife Bobbie Gail Crowley, Danny R. Crowley and Jimmie L. Crowley, all of Patrick; one sister, Dalphine Crowley Michael and husband Butch of Patrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
CLAYTON GAINEY
PATRICK — Graveside services for Clayton Gainey were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Gainey died Wednesday, Oct. 13. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Dove and Carrie Jane Jackson Gainey. He was a retired employee of Becker Sand and Gravel with 44 years of service and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Gainey was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Survivors are his wife, Susan Carol Freeman Gainey of the home; a son, Donald (Anna) Gainey of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Patsy (Greg) Fowler of Mullins; a step–son, Sgt. Mark (Jessica) Tolson of Colorado Spring, Colo.; a step–daughter, Jody (James) Phillips of Hartsville; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
