McBEE, SC — Funeral services for Brittney Hammonds, 18, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at New Faith Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Hammonds died Wednesday, Oct. 13, in an automobile accident. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of Queen Hardister and Pastor Glen C. King. She received her education in the Cumberland County public school systems, and was attending Fayetteville Technical College.
Surviving other than her parents of Fayetteville, N.C., are two sisters, Jeree Hammonds of the home and Ashley Fields of Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers, Antonio Hammonds and Brandon Fields, both of Fayetteville, N.C.; two step–sisters, Valerie (Rickey) Hair and Jacqueline Lee, both of Fayetteville; maternal grandmother, Cinderella Hunter, and maternal great–grandmother, Queenster Murphy, both of Fayetteville; maternal great–great grandmother, Maybelle Murphy of the home and a host of other close relatives and friends.
WILLIAM H. RUSS III
NEW ORLEANS, La. — Mass for William Hardy Russ III, 80, was held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in Metairie, La., with interment at Garden of Memories cemetery.
Mr. Russ died Tuesday, Oct. 5. Born in Lumberton, N.C., he was the son of the late William Hardy and Emma Bracey Russ of Hartsville. He was a graduate of Camden High School, attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in the class of 1949. He was retired president and CEO of Russ Equipment Co. of New Orleans, La. Mr. Russ was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Navy League and the Military Officers Association of America and was a member of the Naval Institute, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and the National D–Day Museum.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Staehling Russ; four sons, William (Rusty) , Kevin, Chris and Kelley; two daughters, Karen Smith and Laurie Tomas; two sisters, Myrtle Russ Johnson of Florence and Catherine Russ Pate of Hartsville; and 10 grandchildren.
JEREMIAH JACKSON JR.
YADKINVILLE, N.C. — Funeral services for Jeremiah Jackson Jr., formerly of Society Hill, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in Gentry Family Funeral Chapel, Yadkinville, N.C. Burial will follow in a local cemetery, with local announcements handled by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Jackson died Tuesday morning, Oct. 12, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Darlington County, (Society Hill) , a son of Mrs. Catherine Jackson and the late Jeremiah Jackson Sr.
Survivors include his mother of the home; six sisters, Janie Sue Titus, Catherine (Johnny) Douglas, Shirley Jackson, Cynthia Jackson, Evelyn Jackson, all of Society Hill and Patricia (James) Blackwell of Patrick; two brothers, David (Dorothy) Jackson and Willis (Gean) Jackson, both of Society Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A sister, Julia E. McQueen and a brother, Alphonso Jackson, preceded him in death.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a sister, Janie Sue Titus of 1004 Russell Road, Society Hill.
ETHEL J. MITCHELL
Funeral services for Ethel J. Mitchell were held on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church where the Rev. A.L. Smiley is the pastor. Elder Rebecca Phillips officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
Mrs. Mitchell was born Aug. 16, 1933, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Booker T. Peterson and Ruby Robinson. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Antioch Baptist Church for many years and served faithfully as a member of the Senior Missionaries. She also sang in the Gospel Choir.
Mrs. Mitchell worked at Butler High School for many years and retired from the Power Plant Maintenance Department at Carolina Power & Light Company after several years of employment.
She was a joy and an inspiration to her family and friends alike. Her sweetness and loving kindness will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
Her memory will remain in the hearts and thoughts of those who survive her, including two daughters, Bazzie (Pastor Calvin) Muldrow and Sarah (Harold Williams) Brown, both of Hartsville; four sons, Ronnie Mitchell of Charlotte, N.C., Charles E. (Ella) Peterson, Ricky Mitchell and John Mitchell, all of Hartsville; three sisters, Inez Roberts, Sarah Peterson and Betty Peterson, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Matthew Max Swinton of Los Angeles, Calif.; her aunt, Azalee Peterson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother–in–law, Bennie Widamen; five sisters–in–law, Hannah Dixon, Lillie Bell Mitchell, Theo Hough, Creola Watson and Sarah Braceley; 26 grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren; other relatives and very dear friends.
JO–LYNN WATSON
Graveside services for Jo–Lynn Hall Watson, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 15, 2004, at High Hill True Light Church cemetery. The Revs. John Rabon and Russell McLeod will officiate, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Watson, widow of Marvin L. Watson, died Wednesday, Oct. 13. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Leila Huntley Hall. She was a member of the High Hill True Light Church. She sold World Book for more than 30 years and was retired as the S.C. manager.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Jerry L. and Elizabeth P. Watson of West Columbia; daughter and son–in–law, Nancy W. and Martin S. Driggers of Hartsville; sisters, Vivian Roseborough of Camden, Catherine Munn of Monroe, N.C., Mary Nell McLeod of Camden, Barbara Rabon of Elgin; brothers, Donald Hall of Lexington, Jimmy Hall of Santee; grandchildren, Martin S. Driggers Jr., Benson Driggers, Kimberly Hix, Henry L. Watson; several great–grandchildren.
ZYLPHY TEAL
Funeral services for Zylphy Perdue Teal, 92, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Lakeview Baptist Church. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church, 202 Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Teal, widow of Curtis Boyd Teal, died Tuesday, Oct. 12. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Neal and Annie Player Perdue. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. She was retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timer's Club.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Gelene and Harold Cranford of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brenda and Charles Parker and Linda and Cecil O'Neal, all of Hartsville; great–grandchildren, Jeannie and Billy Byrd, James Parker and Kelli and Jason St. Amour, all of Hartsville; great–great grandchildren, Austin Byrd, Garrett Byrd and Hunter McLeod. She was preceded in death by her brothers John, Frank and Daniel Perdue; great–great grandchild, Kali Byrd.
MILDRED MINES
Funeral services for Mildred Weaver Mines, 83, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2004, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with a private family burial directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today following the service. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.
Mrs. Mines, widow of E. J. Mines, died Wednesday, Oct. 13. Born in Timmonsville, she was a daughter of the late Otto and Macie Sansbury Weaver. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Deborah Sunday School Class. She was a resident of Wildewood Downs in Columbia for the past eight months.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Randy and Judy Mines of Hartsville, Joey and Betty Mines of LaGrange, Ga.; daughter and son–in–law, Jo Anne and Mike Griggs of Columbia; sisters, Anne Stokes of Florence, Francis Norris of Lugoff; grandchildren, Kayce Parker, Jennifer Schulze, Jamie Goodson, Meredith Mines, Will Mines; great–granddaughter, Sydney Schulze.
SIMON BOYD
Graveside services for James Simon Boyd, 24, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2004, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551.
Mr. Boyd died Tuesday, Oct. 12. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of James E. Boyd and Joan Wildeboer Boyd. He was employed with Shug's Smokehouse and the South Carolina Waterfowl Association. He loved to play golf.
Surviving are his father of Florence; mother of Hartsville; sister, Sara Lanie Boyd of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Macy Privette Turner of Florence; maternal grandmother, Sara Kelley Wildeboer of Hartsville; aunts and uncles, Sherry W. and Charles Macaluso of Blythewood and Hal and Mary Ann Boyd of Mt. Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Hal H. Boyd, and maternal grandfather, John Wildeboer.
MARY ROGERS
Funeral services for Mary Rogers, 69, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rogers died Thursday, Oct. 7, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Johnnie and Francis Thomas Carroway. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, the Missionary Society and the senior choir. She retired from Byerly Hospital.
Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Rogers of Hartsville; two sons, Earl (Donna) Rogers and Stevie (Sylvia) Rogers, all of Hartsville; three sisters, Bertha Chapman of Pasadena, Calif., Rose Williams and Johnny Cuffie, both of New York; two brothers, Harvey Carroway of New York and Robert Carroway of Pasadena, Calif.; three aunts, eight grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other close relatives and friends.
BETTY JOANN GANDY
SOCIETY HILL — Graveside services for Betty Joann Gandy 50, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gandy died Thursday, Oct. 7. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of James K. and Dorothy Gainey Freeman. She was a member of Harris Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her parents of Society Hill; her husband, Donnie R. Gandy of Society Hill; one son, Kirkland W. Gandy of Society Hill; one daughter, Julie K. Gandy of Florence; one brother, Alvin Freeman of Sumter; one grandson, Joshua K. Gandy of Society Hill.

Funeral services for Billy Dean Byrd Sr., 59, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Hartsville Church of God with the Revs. Ronald L. Smalley and Jim Beck officiating.Entombment followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Billy D. Byrd Month of Flowers Fund, C/O Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home, 306 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550. Donations to this memorial fund will place a flower at the mausoleum in the giver's name for any specified month -
Mr. Byrd died Friday, Oct. 8. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late John Gary and Grace Capps Byrd. He was a member of Hartsville Church of God and was employed with Sonoco for 27 years.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Billy and Michelle Byrd of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Margo and Joe Kinard of Hartsville; sister, Opal Lee Tyner of Hartsville; brothers, Al Byrd, Ray Byrd, Gary Byrd, Carson Byrd and Roger Byrd, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Grace Byrd, John Byrd, Ryan Kinard, Kirston Kinard.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Byrd.
LUTRICIA ANN BUSH
Lutricia Ann Bush of New York, formerly of Darlington County, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, in a Bronx New York hospital after an illness. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.
Lutricia was born in Hartsville, a daughter of Rebecca Bush Miguel and Charles Dickey. She was educated in the public schools of of New York. Before moving to New York, Lutricia was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. -
Survivors in addition to her parents, Rebecca (Elton) Bush Miguel of Staten Island, N.Y., and Charles (Cynthia) Dickey of Hartsville, are five children, Saquan Bush and Diamond Ned both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mahalia Ned, Jerek Bush Ned and Damien Ned, all of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister Tiffany Huggins of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Ceclephus Bush of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a special friend Sabrooks Ned of Bronx, N.Y.
VIVIAN K. KINDRED
LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. — Funeral services for Vivian King Kindred, 70, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at the Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Kenneth Shouse officiating. Burial followed in the Lawrenceburg cemetery.
Mrs. Kindred died Thursday, Oct. 7, at her residence in Merriweather. She was the daughter of the late Coker F. and Grace Taylor King. She was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Hartsville. She was a retired department manager with Slone's Grocery in Lawrenceburg and a member of Alton Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Allen D. Kindred; two daughters, Connie (Bruce) Thompson of Lawrenceburg and Christie (Rick) Knori of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Christopher Thompson of Lawrenceburg, Kyle and Jaclyn Knori, both of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and a sister, Sara (Tommy) Tyner of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jacob Knori.
