Funeral services for Elijah Bud Gilbert, age 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles McLendon and Wayne Lucas officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Gilbert died Thursday, Oct. 7. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Henry S. Gilbert Sr. and Cecila Polson Gilbert. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 45 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club, a Veteran of World War II and a member of the Hartsville Advent Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mary Lee Jones Gilbert of Hartsville and sister, Elma Gilbert, also of Hartsville.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Conway Gilbert, Henry S. Gilbert Jr. and William Ancil Gilbert.
JOSEPH WINGO
Funeral services for Joseph Earnest Wingo, 13, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial followed in Norwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Thad E. Saleeby Center, 714 Lewellen Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Wingo died Thursday, Oct. 7. Born in Hall County, Ga., he was a son of Carlton Earnest and Bessie Usher Wingo. He was a member of Forest Hills Independent Baptist Church. -
Surviving are his mother of Bishopville; father of Murrayville, Ga.; sisters, Cathy Lee Willis of Dawsonville, Ga., and Gwendolyn Wingo of Bishopville.
MARTHA D. ISEMAN
MT. CROGHAN — Funeral services for Martha Dudley Iseman, 74, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 13, 2004, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.
Mrs. Iseman died Sunday, Oct. 10, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late N. G. and Mae Stewart Dudley. She was wife of the late Rev. Marvin L. Iseman. A pastor's wife in the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church for 39 years, she served in staff and voluntary positions in the churches her husband shepherded while raising four children. Mrs. Iseman was active in all areas of church and civic life while handling the tasks of a full–time homemaker.
Survivors are two sons, M. Daniel Iseman and Michael D. (Deborah) Iseman of Mt. Croghan; two daughters, Marcia I. (Edward M.) Woodward of Columbia and Deborah I. (Lawrence H.) Molnar of Atlanta, Ga.; five brothers, George, Paul and Wade Dudley of Darlington, Ray Dudley of Florence and James Dudley of Edgewater, Fla.; three sisters, Ruth D. Iseman of Hartsville, Christine D. Iseman and Trubee Dudley of Darlington; 10 grandchildren, Tupper, Hunter and Salley Iseman, Michael Iseman Jr., Martha and Joe Woodward, Patrick, Natalie, Alex and Mary Molnar; and two great–grandchildren, Morgan Iseman and Asha Murphy.
In lieu of flowers it was Mrs. Iseman's request that any memorials be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202 or to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 W. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
ALLARD WILLIAMSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Allard Williamson were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in New Hope A.M.E. Church with Dr. Brooks Williamson officiating. Burial followed in Round O Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Williamson died Thursday, Oct. 7, in a Florence nursing home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Brooks and Lou Ella Samuel Williamson.
He was a graduate of Mayo High School Class of 1952. At an early age, he was a member of New Hope A.M.E. Church and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged. For 50 years he lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was employed with Delta Domestic at Kennedy Airport as a Sky Jack until he retired and returned to Darlington in 2002.
Survivors include his sister, Ms. Vivian Williamson of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Luby and Arthur, and a sister, Bernetha.
JOHNNY DOWDY
Johnny Dowdy, 52, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in Douglasville, Ga. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 2244 Rockcrest Drive, Hartsville.
HOWARD BAZEN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Howard Vernon Bazen, 76, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Central Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Bazen died Wednesday, Sept. 29, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Florence County, son of the late William Milliken and Mary Alma Poston Bazen. Because of his kind heart and gentle nature, he was known and loved by many. He never turned down a man in need. Mr. Bazen has been popular in the area for more than 60 years of service in the restaurant business. Beginning in 1944 as a waiter, his first business was the well–known Chicken Basket in Florence. Currently, Howard Bazen's Family Restaurant, named in his honor, is owned and operated by Mr. Bazen's three daughters. Other notable establishments include the Southern Aire, the Darlington Restaurant and BJ's Family Restaurant.
Mr. Bazen was an avid sports fan. Spending time on the golf course was his favorite pastime.
He was known for his impressive drive, yet was often teased by his friends about his not–so–perfect putt. He coached men's and girls' softball for a number of years. Other interests include NASCAR racing and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Mr. Bazen was a Mason and member of Central Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Beaufort B. Bazen of Darlington; three sons, Howard V. Bucky Bazen of Florence, Johnny Bazen of Darlington and Michael Bazen of Florence; three daughters, Belinda (Al) Waldrop, Judy (Billy) Moore and Lisa (Buddy) Ralley, all of Florence; 15 grand–children and 10 great grandchildren; two adopted daughters, Donna Bazen of Hartsville and Lisa Kimrey of Myrtle Beach; a step–son, Wesley (Pat) Folsom of Darlington and step–daughter, Brenda Hayes of Florence; also, three sisters, Lucille Johnson (Milo) Kight, Chris B. Hyler and Jeanette B. (Wayne) Putnam, all of Florence; sister–in–law, Mary T. Bazen, also of Florence, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bazen was preceded in death by his daughter, Carlene B. Bryant; three brothers, John Wesley, Frank E. Petie and George Wallace Wally Bazen and two sisters, Daisy B. June and Mary Harrelson.

HENRY GREEN JR.
Funeral services for Henry Green Jr., 49, will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at The Living Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Chapel, conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Green died Tuesday, Oct. 5, after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Henry and Azalee Isaac Green Sr. He was educated in the Lee County public schools and was a member of The Living Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. He was also a retired employee of Dupont–Invista.
Surviving are his wife, Cathy Green of McBee; two sons, Henry Green III and Joshua Devale Green, both of the home; seven sisters, Carrie G. Muldrow, Mary Ann Green, Ethel (Ernest) James, all of McBee, Brenda Green of Sumter, Mary Alice (Donald) Clark and Geneva Green, both of Columbia, and Georgia Martin of Bishopville; four brothers, James E. (Jeanette) Green of Dalzell, Lucious L. (Tonette) Green of Walterboro, Tommy L. (Lynn) Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Kelly Tention of Woodrow; in–laws; three aunts; two uncles and two great–grandaunts; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LUTRICIA ANN BUSH
Lutricia Ann Bush, 42, formerly of Dovesville, died on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was the daughter of Rebecca Bush and Charles Dickey. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
JAMES ANDERSON
Funeral services for James Jimmy Anderson were held on Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The Rev. Isaac Johnson, pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, officiated at the services.
Mr. Anderson was born on Nov. 18, 1938, in Darlington County, a son of Mary Smith Anderson and the late Sam Anderson. He was the devoted grandson of the late Allene and Sam Anderson Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. At an early age he moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where he worked for several years before he returned to Hartsville and joined the U.S. Army. He served more than three years in the military and was honorably discharged. After his separation from the military, he moved to New York City where he was employed with the United States Postal Service until he retired in 1992.
He was married
to the former Virginia Woodard on Nov. 22, 1971, in Bronx, N.Y. This union was blessed with three sons and two daughters. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association of Darlington and New York and was a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Jimmy, as he was known to his family and friends, was a kind–hearted person who would do anything he could to help his fellow man. His compassion for others will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Surviving to cherish his loving memory are his mother, Mary Smith Anderson of Hartsville; three sons, Samuel Anderson and Noland Anderson, both of New York, N.Y., and Marcell Anderson of Philadelphia; two daughters, Sherry (Kenneth) Johnson of New York, N.Y., and Lisa (Timothy) Anderson of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Lillian Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; a special cousin, Patrick (Jeanette) Jett of Philadelphia, Pa.; his mother and father–in–law, Louise and Morris Raines; his sisters–in–law, Gloria (Sam) Lewis, Grace (Thomas) Lattimore, Katherine (Brian) Harvey and Patricia Allen; his brothers–in–law, Tyrone (Angela) Woodard, Andrew (Marilyn) Flowers, Allen (Paulette) Flowers; his adopted niece and nephew, Jerome and Sharon McCaskill; nine grandchildren; one great–grandchild; other relatives and very dear friends.
CHARLIE DIXON
Funeral services for Charlie Dixon, 46, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ed Griggs and Brian Enlow officiating. Burial followed in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Dixon died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Myrtle Linton Dixon and the late Robert Dixon.
Surviving are his son, Chad Dixon of Apopka, Fla.; daughters, Courtney Dixon of Apopka, Fla., Jennifer Blackburn of Thomasville; sisters and brother–in–law, Betty Sue Freeman of Patrick, Penny D. and Donnie Mangum of Claxton, Ga.; brothers and sisters–in–law, Bobby Lett of Wheaton, Md., Joel and Deloris Lett of Patrick, Bruce and Susan Lett of Archdale, N.C., Ken and Phyllis Dixon of Hartsville, Donnie and Victoria Dixon of Hartsville, Terry and Deborah Dixon of Concord, N.C.; 20 nephews and 20 nieces.
He was preceded in death by his twin–sister, Clarice Dixon.
JAMES WALTON MACK JR.
James Sonnie Walton Mack Jr. died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at St. John United Methodist Church, the Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
Mr. Mack, affectionately known as Sonnie to his family and Mack to his friends, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to James Walton Mack Sr. and Lurlean Bess Mack. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities during his earlier years. He also attended various churches in Atlanta, Ga. His academic achievements included elementary and high school in Darlington County, undergraduate training at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., graduate training at Iowa State University in studies of mathematics, Georgia Technical Institute and Georgia State University. He was also a mathematics teacher in Darlington County, DeKalb County and Atlanta area in public and private settings, both elementary, high school and college in the Metro–Atlanta area and most recently at Atlanta Technical College. Other affiliations included Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., founder and dean of pledges of the first African–American fraternity or sorority of Georgia (Eta Omega Chapter 1976) of Georgia Technical Institute, Pi Lambda Theta International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education.
Survivors, in addition to his parents James and Lurlean Bess Mack of Hartsville, are two sisters, Lerlita (Julius) Wingate of Darlington and Garbriella Mack–White of Hartsville; five aunts, Juliet B. Pasley of Hemingway and Mae Willis (Zaddock) Solomon of Baltimore, Md., Modestine K. Mack of Darlington, Katie H. Mac of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mageline D. Mack of Oakland, Calif.; one niece, Toccarra E. Pasley of Darlington; three nephews, Thaddeus A. White (godson) , Dominique G. White of Hartsville and Darell White of Timmonsville.
THOMAS 'BEALER' DIALS
LAMAR — Funeral services for Thomas Bealer Dials were held on Tuesday, Dec. 07, 2004, at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial followed at Plaza Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar. The Rev. Emmanuel Simon, pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, officiated at the service.
Mr. Dials was born Feb. 21, 1944, in Darlington County, a son of the late Rev. George Dials Sr. and Linda Rogers Dials. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He attended Bethany Baptist Church in Lamar.
He worked as service attendant at Horne Ford in Florence for a number of years. Bealer, as he was known throughout the community, was a very outgoing and jolly person. If you asked him something he gave you an up front answer. He enjoyed working outdoors and loved doing yard work. Friends and family alike loved him. His presence from among us will certainly be missed.
His daughter, Lois Ann Dials, preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by two of his brothers, Leroy Dials and Isaiah Dials, and by two of his sisters, Flossie Mae Huggins and Betty Jean Dials.
Surviving to cherish his loving memory are his wife, Deloris Durant Dials of Winter Haven, Fla.; his son, Tommy Dials of Winter Haven, Fla.; nine brothers, George (Queenie) Dials, Marion Dials and John Dials, all of Hartsville, Willie Dials and Franklin Dials both of Lamar, Perry Lee Dials of Miami, Fla., Harry Dials of Florence, Richard Dials of Madison, N.C., and Herbert Dials of Dillon; three sisters, Gracie (Robert) Dials–Whack of Lamar, Joretta (the Rev. John) Bodison and Mattie (Leonard) Henderson, both of Miami, Fla.; an uncle, Roy (Bertelle) Rogers of Boonesville, N.C.; his mother–in–law, Juanita Durant of Lamar; his sisters–in–law, Reatha Mae Dials of Florence, Louvenia Tellis of Winter Haven, Fla., and Magdelene McCollough of Lamar; his brother–in–law, Kenzie Durant of Lamar; 10 grandchildren; 48 nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, other relatives and very dear friends.
PATTY McELVEEN
Funeral services for Patty Snodgrass McElveen, 62, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Darrell Bogatay officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, SC Chapter, 261 B Riverchase Way, Lexington SC 29072.
Mrs. McElveen died Friday, Dec. 3. Born in Winchester, Ohio, she was a daughter of Opal Foster Snodgrass Blair and the late Harold Dean Snodgrass. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, served on the church board and helped with the youth fund–raisers. She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina magna cum laude and was director of Telemetry Floor at McLeod Regional Medical Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, William McElveen of Hartsville; sons, Mike Purdin of Manchester, Ohio, Ty William Hardymon and Wesley Alan Hardymon, both of Hartsville; daughter, Kelly Mason of Seaman, Ohio; mother of Elmsville, Ohio; sisters, Jeannie Snodgrass of Elmsville, Ohio, Mildred Collett of Xenia, Ohio; grandchildren, Krissia Purdin, Johnnie Mason, Mariah Mason.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Snodgrass and Bob Snodgrass.
