SHANNON L. WILKES

Funeral services for Shannon Lynn Wilkes, 29, were held on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Middendorf Church of the Living God. The Rev. Margaret Hicks officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilkes died Friday, Jan. 21.

She is survived by her husband, Kendall Lee Wilkes of Hartsville; sons, Blake Winburn, Chase Winburn and Jordan Barfield; daughters, Katelon Mixon and Kellie Johnson; father, Jimmy Rhodes; mother, Judy O'Neal, all of Hartsville; sister, Angie Flowers, also of Hartsville.

E. HUDSON SEVERANCE

Funeral services for E. Hudson Severance, 75, who died Jan. 23, 2005, will be held today, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Severance was born in Darlington County, a son of the late William James and Mellisa McAlister Severance. He was co–owner of NAPA Auto Parts, past president of the Automobile Parts Association of S.C. and managed the NAPA store in Columbia for 13 years. He was a loving husband and father. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Sara Knotts Severance of Hartsville; son, Billy (Kay) Severance of Hartsville; daughters, Debra Ann (Ronnie) Grant of Hartsville, Janet Lynn (Don) Matthews of Lake Wylie, Sandra Kay (Richard) Snipes of Florence; brothers, Charles Severance of Baton Rouge, La., Raymond Severance of Darlington; sister, Mary Eunice Price of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; six great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Kelleytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kelleytown Road, Hartsville, SC 29550, or the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

ALPHONSO GOODSON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Alphonso Al Goodson were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Goodson died Thursday, Jan. 13, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Robert and Robbie Lee Bruce Goodson. He attended the Darlington County public schools and served his country in the U.S. Air Force from which he was honorably discharged. He retired from Industrial Paving in 2003 and was a member of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle (Anthony) Thrower of Sacramento, Calif. and Ruthie Jones of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Jerome (Brenda) Goodson of Darlington; a sister, Floria Betty Broggs of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren; a great–grandchild; an aunt, Lurline Hodges of New York, N.Y.; a nephew, Keith (Melissa) Bragg; three nieces, Tanya (Joseph) Orama, Renee (Bruce) World and Genise (the Rev. Sherdeill) Breathette; special friends, Albert and Joyce Robinson and family, Davon Whitehurst and Marvin Slater; and a host of other relatives.

TERRELL J. MOSS, SR.

EASTANOLLEE, Ga. — Funeral services for Terrell Jackson Jack Moss Sr. were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, from the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Revs. Eric Phillips, Dan Merck and Mr. Brad Burgess officiating. Burial followed in Allens United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mr. Moss died Friday, Jan. 21, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

He was born July 28, 1923, in Stephens County, a son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Emma Elizabeth Harrison Moss. He was employed by Coats & Clark for 20 years, was a security officer for Milliken Avalon Plant for a number of years and worked for Toccoa Speedway for 23 years. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of Confidence United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Brown Moss, and a daughter, Myra Snyder.

Survivors include a son and daughter–in–law, Terry and Betty Moss of Raleigh, N.C.; daughters and son–in–law, Jackie and Larry Burgess of Hartsville and Katie Moss of Eastanollee; brothers, Bud Moss of Macon, Ga.; and Sherrill Moss of Eastanollee; six grandchildren; six great–grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bill Ayers, Butch Ayers, Joe King, Roy McCurley, Dennis Stamey and Steve Williamson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Moss to the Georgia Sheriff's Association Youth Home, c/o Stephens County Sheriff's Office, 205 N. Alexander St., Toccoa, Ga. 30577.

BEN HAIRE

Funeral services for Benjamin S. Haire, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dora Gafford officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Haire, widower of Vera Teal Haire, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Owens Herbert and Mary Shoemake Haire. He was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Woodmen of the World. Ben built homes in the Darlington County area for 50 years, but his passion in life was his grandchildren and his garden. He loved to grow anything in his garden and give it away to others.

Surviving are his sons and daughters–in–law, Jimmy Haire, Dennis and Tami Haire, Michael Cotton and Cynthia Haire, all of Hartsville; sisters, Elizabeth Griggs, Ruth Brown, Ellen Flowers, all of Hartsville; aunt, Addiemae Pridgen of Hartsville; uncle, John Shoemake of Hartsville; grandchildren, Owens, Justin, Josh, Jake, Judd, Krys, Teryn, Kayla and Kaine; great–grandchildren, Ben and Hayden.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert Haire and Thomas Haire and his sisters, Ruby Albee and Claudia Haire.

SAM L. HARRISON

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Sam L. Harrison, 71, were held 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Bethesda Baptist Church in Society Hill. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Harrison died Friday, Jan. 14, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness.

He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Charlie and Bessie Harrison. He received his education in the Chesterfield County public school system and was a retired employee with Dunlap Farm.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice D. Harrison of Society Hill; four daughters, Clara Harrison, Patricia Rubin, Johnnie (Charles) Burns and Brenda (Darrick) Sanders, all of Society Hill; two sisters, Shirley Harrison and Evelyn (Toney) Singletary both of Society Hill; five brothers, Joseph (Luvenia) Harrison of Albany, N.Y., Ernest Harrison, Tobey Harrison, Leroy (Cheryl) Harrison and Roosevelt Harrison, all of Winston–Salem, N.C.; one sister–in–law, Emma Harrison of Society Hill; four aunts, Rosezena Mills of Waterbury, Conn., the Rev. and Mrs. Barbara Squire, Margaret James and Joe James, all of Society Hill; one uncle, Herbert James of Chesterfield County; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other close relatives.

JAMES HAYDEN

Memorial services for James Lonnie Hayden, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Faith Baptist Church. The Rev. Randy Gulledge will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. -The family will receive friends this evening, Jan. 26, from 5 to 7 at the residence at 1049 E. Carolina Ave.

Mr. Hayden died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Aaron F. and Rosalie Edwards Hayden. He attended Faith Baptist Church and was employed as a welder with PPM.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Johnson Hayden of Hartsville; sons, Jamie Hayden of Gastonia, N.C., Billy Johnson Hartsville; daughter, Renee Woody of Gastonia, N.C.; sisters, Betty Jacobs, Myra Richey, Crystal McDonald, all of Hartsville; brother, Frankie Hayden of Columbia; grandchildren, Glen, Brittany, Travis and Tyler. He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Johnson.

BEATRICE BROWN

Funeral services for Beatrice Brown, 57, were held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Brown died Sunday, Jan. 16, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late June and Lizzie Lee Miles Brown. Mrs. Brown received her education in the Darlington County public school systems and was a member of The Church of God Beyond Man' Knowledge.

Surviving are her husband, George Jackson of Hartsville; two daughters, Cordelia Brown of Darlington and Dorothy Evans of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters, Elder Elizabeth Brown of Columbia and Joanne Brown and Mary Ann Brown, both of Hartsville; three brothers, Minister Bobby (Brenda) Brown, Willie Brown and Randy Brown all of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Kendrick A. Brown of Avalene, Texas, Princess D. McDonald of Darlington and Trenton L. Mosley of Cincinnati, Ohio, nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

ADA G. STEEN

CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Ada Griggs Steen, 93, were held 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Cross Branch Baptist Church with burial in Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Steen died Wednesday, Jan. 19. She was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Lamb and Matilda Isgett Griggs. She was a homemaker and member of Cross Branch Baptist Church. Mrs. Steen was married to the late William Duncan Boss Steen and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lou Doris Meier, and two sons, Jack and Ilee Steen.

Survivors are two sons, H. B. (Marion) Steen of Goose Creek and Larry Steen of Chesterfield; two daughters, Helen (Brooks) Gardner and Lois (Sam) Jones, all of Chesterfield; 19 grandchildren, 26 great–grandchildren and 19 great–great–grandchildren.

TRAVIS EUGENE BOAN

BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Travis Eugene Boan, 60, who died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, were held on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Chapel Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tyrone Mitchum and Rev. Hazel Mixon officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Methodist Church cemetery.

Travis was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Harold Eugene and Laura Alice Rhodes Boan. He was employed with Kawashima Textile in Lugoff and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Rhodes Boan of Bishopville; daughters, Marsha Wyatt, Libby and Barbara Boan of Bishopville; sisters, Miriam Hinkle of Johnson City, Tenn.; Martha McCall of Alcolu; brother, Jimmy Boan of Hartsville; two grandchildren.

ETHEL GORDON

Funeral services for Ethel Gordon were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Blue officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Gordon was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Theodore and Emily Scott Gordon. She was educated in the public schools of the county. Ms. Gordon then moved to New York and worked for many years in retail sales at Bloomingdale's Department Store.

She was a fun loving person who made friends easily. Her jovial nature was what set her apart from others and her kindness will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving to cherish her memory are a sister, Williard James of Florence: her nieces, Wilhemenia Davis and Inetta Samuel, both of Florence, Emily Gentry of Durham, N.C., Patricia (Alvin) Lark of College Station, Texas; her nephews, Marshall Allen (Michelle) James of Florence and Harden (Geraldine) James Jr. of Goose Creek; other relatives and very dear friends.

BRUCE SOLOMON

LAMAR — Funeral services for Bruce Solomon will be held today, Jan. 21, 2005, at 2 p.m. at New Zion AME Church. Burial will follow in the Solomon family cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Pastor Franklin Spears will officiate the service.

Mr. Solomon was born Jan. 22, 1970, in Lee County, a son of Eleazer Solomon Jr. and the late Ora Bell Henry Solomon. After the death of his mother, Annie Mae and Charlie McMichael raised Bruce. He lived his early life in Wysacky. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. While in high school he excelled in football and basketball. He joined New Zion AME Church at an early age.

Shortly after graduation from high school, Bruce lived for several years in Columbus, Ga. He eventually moved to Washington, D.C. where he lived a very busy and productive life. While in Washington, he worked for Hay Construction Co. where he handled home improvement and repair. Later, he was employed for about a year by Automation Management Services Corp. where he worked with computers. He also worked with Lane Construction Co. where he helped build the last two new stations on the Blue Line of the Washington/Maryland Subway System. His most recent employment was as a supervisor on the construction of the multi–million dollar Woodrow Wilson Bridge connecting Maryland and Virginia.

Bruce was a loving and much loved father, son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a caring and jovial person who made people laugh and made them happy to be around him. Those who knew and loved him will sadly miss his good nature and wonderful sense of humor. One of his brothers, Lorenzo Solomon preceded him in death.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his father, Eleazer Solomon Jr.; his daughter, Abronda Solomon; four brothers, Eleazer Solomon III, Reggie Henry, Martin Jerome Solomon, and Michael Solomon; a sister, Mamie K. Solomon; six paternal aunts and six paternal uncles; three maternal aunts and two maternal uncles; cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
