Man drowns during swim across lake
The body of a 20-year-old Union man was recovered from Foster Park Lake Sunday morning, about six hours after he and his cousin tried to swim across the water. Chief Sam White of the Union Public Safety Department said Roscoe Lee Lipsey of 113 Neal Shoals Road was one of several young people who drove to the lake around 3:45 a.m. Lipsey and his cousin, Jerry Lipsey, 17, decided to swim across the lake.
Jerry said the group initially had gone to Pauline to see his and Roscoe's grandmother. After leaving there, they stopped by a motel, hoping to sneak into the swimming pool. But the gate was locked, he said.
The group had a dog with them that needed to be let out of the car, so they stopped at Foster Park Lake. Jerry and Roscoe decided to jump in the water and swim. They entered the water on the side of the lake near the parking lot. They didn't make it across. He started yelling and I started panicking, too, Jerry said.
Roscoe called to Carrie Parks, 22, another friend who had driven to the lake, that he needed help. But the way he was doing it, I thought he was laughing, Jerry said. I guess he was gasping. Somehow, Jerry got out of the water. I don't know what pulled me up, he said.
Jerry said Roscoe's younger brother, John, 16, stripped down to his underwear, waded into the lake and tried to locate Roscoe He can't swim but he wanted to go in, Jerry said. The group used a pay phone in the parking lot to call 911. I didn't mean for all this to happen, Jerry said.
Divers from the Union County Rescue Squad and the Cherokee County Dive Team were called to look for Roscoe. Mark Wade with the Union squad said Roscoe's body was recovered about 62 yards from the shore in 12 to 14 feet of water and brought to the surface by Union diver Mark Brasington.
White praised the divers for their work. It was a team effort, he said. The rescue squad performed a valuable service, along with the team from Cherokee. Most of them use their own equipment. It's very admirable what they do and they don't get paid for it. Roscoe's aunt, Rose Lipsey, who also was watching the recovery effort, said Roscoe was a good person who normally would rather have been fishing.
She said he had been spending a lot of time lately with his younger brother and sister, fishing with them. She said his siblings and the rest of his family are devastated by his death. He has a little girl who was 1 year old in March and another baby on the way, she said. Sgt. Wayne Hutcherson with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said Lipsey is at least the 14th person to drown this year in South Carolina in a water-related accident. Lipsey is the third to drown this month in Union County.
On June 14, a Greenville man drowned while fishing in a pond at a Carlisle hunt club. That same day, the body of a Chester man who had been missing for three days was recovered in the Broad River. You may think you are a great swimmer and then nobody can get out there to help you, Hutcherson said.
It happens all the time. Hutcherson said the lake measured 133 yards across. Most people would think that is 25 or 30 yards across, Hutcherson said, looking across the lake. Water will fool you. Hutcherson recommended that people take swimming lessons and boating safety courses, some of which are offered by the DNR, before going out into the water.
Union County Coroner William Holcombe said an autopsy is scheduled today on Lipsey's body to determine if a medical condition or other factors contributed to his death.
