JAMES FLOYD POWELL

Funeral services for James Floyd Powell, 53, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Pat Orr and the Rev. Doug Mathis officiating. Burial followed in Williams Hill Freewill Baptist Church cemetery, Hemingway, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -

Mr. Powell died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Born in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late William Bemon and Kathleen Williams Powell. He was owner and operator of Cinema Wholesale. He was a loving and hard worker and loved to fish. -

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Tolson Powell of Hartsville; son, Chris Powell of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; daughter, LeGay Powell of Florence; brother and sister–in–law, William and Dorothy Powell of Hemingway; a step–son, Billy Cross of Society Hill; step–daughter, Edie Cross of Poplar Bluff, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his sister Janette Scurry and his brother Larry Powell.

JOSEPHINE HOLMAN

SOCIETY HILL — Josephine Holman, 60, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Medford Nursing Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

PAYTON JOHNSON

Funeral services for Charles Payton Johnson, 23, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at New Market United Methodist Church. The Revs. Phillip Warty and Teddie Moore will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Jan. 12, from from 5 to 7 at the Russell and Billie Johnson residence, 2448 Ruby Road. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mr. Johnson died Sunday, Jan. 9. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Charles Wayne Johnson and Tracy Causey Perdue. He graduated from Hartsville High School and attended Florence–Darlington Technical College for one year. He was loved by many and had many friends.

Surviving are his father and mother of Hartsville; sister, June Johnson of Hartsville; aunts and uncles, Judy and John Howle of Jacksonville, Fla., Brenda and Eston Windham of Lamar, Annette and Dennis Biggs of Georgia and Bronice and Rob Windham of Lamar.

BEULAH DUBOSE

DARLINGTON — Mrs. Beulah Cook DuBose, 82, wife of Bill DuBose, died Friday evening, Jan. 7, 2005, at Medford Place. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Central Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. DuBose was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late George C. and Louise Jordan Cook. She was co–owner of DuBose Jewelers and was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 58 years are son and daughter–in–law, Danny and Tammy DuBose, also of Darlington; grandchildren, Chris DuBose, Lindsay DuBose, Elizabeth DuBose and Coby DuBose; great–grandson Jonathan DuBose; daughter–in–law, Peggy DuBose of Elizabethtown, Pa.; special niece, Ida McCormick of Florence and sister, Ada Blackman of Glennsfall, N.Y.

Mrs. Dubose was preceded in death by a son, Grady DuBose.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 or Central Baptist Church, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.

FRAZIER DAVIS SR.

CHESTERFIELD — George Frazier Davis Sr., 73, formerly of Darlington, died at his home in Chesterfield County Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Darlington, with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens with Masonic rites.

Mr. Davis was born in Newbern, Tenn., son of the late J. Frank and Ora Mae Curtis Davis. He was a retired truck driver with Krueger International for over 20 years and was awarded International Driver of the Year. He was a mason, shriner and member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife Rosa B. Davis of Chesterfield; two daughters, Linda (Tom) Googe of Denver, Colo., and Debbie (John) Askins of Hartsville; three sons, George F. Buster Davis Jr., of Chesterfield, Rodger Dale Davis of Coward and A. Matthew Davis of Darlington; step–son, R. D. Mumford of Cheraw; and step–daughter, Joyce Ann (J. B.) Wood of Chesterfield; also, a number of grandchildren and great–grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Kingsley and Virginia Barger, both of Booneville, Miss.; five brothers, Junior Davis of Illinois, Johnny Davis, James Davis, Jerry Davis and Stanley Davis, all of Booneville, Miss.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Shouse Davis, son, Frankie Monroe Davis, granddaughter, Ora Mae Danielle Davis and step–son, Bill Mumford.

CHARLOTTE LAMOY

CAMDEN — Graveside services for Charlotte Perry Lamoy, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Quaker cemetery with the Revs. Thomas Smith and Steve Gaines officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lamoy died Friday, Jan. 7. Born in Miami Springs, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Steve and Willie Watkins Perry. She previously was an active member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, a hospital volunteer and a member of the Fine Arts Center.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Robert and Karen Lamoy of Camden; daughter, Claudia L. Morse of Columbia; grandchildren, Robert Morse III, Terri Stack, Tracey Lamoy, Russell P. Lamoy; two great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Gregory S. Morse.

HELEN RIVERS

SOCIETY HILL — Graveside services for Helen Freeman Rivers, 62, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Society Hill Latter–day Saints cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Hodge officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Latter Day Saints cemetery or the Society Hill Church of God.

Mrs. Rivers died Friday, Jan. 7. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Everette Freeman and Ruby Wallace Edwards. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints.

Surviving are her sisters and brothers–in–law, Frances and Cecil Jones of Society Hill, Beulah and Darwin Woolstenhulme of Oakley, Utah, Nellie Mae Howle of Society Hill, Velma and Cecil Windham of Darlington, Diane and Clay Howard of Florence; brothers and sisters–in–law, Kenneth and Caren Edwards of Evergreen, Ala., Donnie and Charlotte Edwards of Society Hill, J. K. and Dorothy Freeman of Society Hill, Clyde and Sadie Edwards of Society Hill; 44 nieces and nephews; special friends, Joel Tiller of Hartsville, Don Tiller of Hartsville and Johnny Tiller of Savannah, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, James Edwards, Ernest Edwards, Edward Freeman and Bobby Freeman.

JANIE M. WRIGHT

Funeral services for Janie Mae Caldwell Wright, 56, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 12, 2005, at Mill Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wright died Sunday, Jan. 9, in Kershaw County Memorial Hospital in Camden after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of Eva King Caldwell and the late James Caldwell. She received her education in the Kershaw County public school system and attended Deliverance Temple.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Wright of McBee; two daughters, Denise Wright of McBee and Shedrenette Rush of Hartsville; two sons, Marvin Wright of Pennsylvania and Charles Wright Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.; her mother, Eva King Caldwell of Bethune; mother–in–law, Mary Wright of McBee; six sisters, Betty R. (Adolph) Jackson, Dorothy L (Robert) Little, Lillie L. (Bernard) Zimmerman and Brenda (Isaiah) Commander, all of Bethune, Sarah A. (Hubert) Moses and Linda L (Lee) Jackson, both of Hartsville; four brothers, Willie L. (Shelby G.) Caldwell, Willie J. Caldwell and Handy C. Caldwell, all of Hartsville, and Ronnie C. (Benita) Caldwell of Bethune; two sisters–in–law, Carol Wright (Nathaniel) Miller and Margaret Wright, both of McBee; four brothers–in–law, Stanley (Loretta) Wright of Jefferson, Ulysses Wright of Lancaster, Larry (Vernell) Wright of Hyattsville, Md., and Ralph (Evelyn) Wright of Baltimore, Md.; two uncles, Moses (Mary) McDougal and JC (Addie) Mae Dewitt, both of McBee; one grandson, Shaquille Wright of McBee; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

BONNIE C. SMITH

Funeral services for Bonnie Chester Smith will be held today, Jan. 7, 2005, at New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Calvin Daniels, pastor of New Hopwell, will officiate at the service.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 22, 1947, in Darlington County, a son of Bertha J. Smith and the late Van Brailey and Louis Smith. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church. He worked for a number of years at Klopman Mills as a sewing machine technician. Earlier in life, he was a teacher at Marlboro/Chesterfield Technical College.

Chester was a man of many talents and many hobbies. He had a love of fishing and music. He was an excellent dancer and won his share of talent shows as a young boy. He touched every life he came in contact with. If you ever met him, you could never forget him. He had an ear to listen to every problem and a mouth to give advice for any situation. He was a wise and insightful man who told the truth whether you wanted to hear it or not. He was a friend that you could always count on.

He leaves his legacy and his memories to his survivors including his mother, Bertha J. Smith of Hartsville; his wife of 37 years, Mary Alice Green Smith of Hartsville; three sons, James C. (Margaret Hawkins) Smith, Darryl Miller and Reginald Reggie (Felicia Jeffery) Smith, all of Hartsville; two daughters, Penny Boyce of Hartsville and Tammy (Shaun) Stimpson of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Ricky Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Ethelene (James) Smith, Edith Bruce and Louise (Albertus) Delaine, all of Hartsville; his step–mother, Matilda Brailey of Hartsville, three step–sisters, Yvonne Montague, Delores (Mike) Patterson and Harriett Bacote, all of Hartsville; persons raised as his brothers and sisters, William (Viola) Jett, Ernest (Brenda) Jett, James Ernest Jett, Beaver Jett and Louvenia Graves: his mother–in–law, Lillie Mae Green; and four aunts, two uncles, four sisters–in–law, six brothers–in–law, nine grandchildren and other relatives and very dear friends.

WAYNE BARBER

DARLINGTON — Charles Wayne Barber, age 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 7, in Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Barber was born in Florence County, son of Ila Lee Barber and the late Charlie W. Barber. He was a carpenter and enjoyed hunting fishing and playing guitar. Mr. Barber was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Woody (Lisa E.) Barber, Dean (Lisa A.) Barber and Michael (Crystal) Barber, all of Darlington; one daughter, Susan (Steven) Hackett of Columbia; five grandchildren; two brothers, David (Jane) Barber and Jerry (Karen) Barber, both of Darlington; two sisters, Joyce Carr and Lynn Thornton, both of Darlington.

The family will receive friends at various times at the home of Dean and Lisa Barber, 965 E. Billy Farrow Hwy., Darlington.

GRAYSON L. CASTON

Graveside services for infant Grayson Layne Caston will be held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 7, 2005, at Union United Methodist Church cemetery. The Revs. Roger Dodds and Rickey Bledsoe will officiate, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. - Memorials may be made to MUSC Children's Hospital, 165 Ashley Ave., Charleston, SC 29425.

Infant Caston died Tuesday, Jan. 4. He was a son of Jason and Alicia Johnson Caston.

Surviving are his mother and father of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, James C. and Diane Johnson of Hartsville; paternal grandparents, John and Chyrstal Caston of Hartsville.

PATTY GAINEY

PATRICK — Funeral services for Betty Elizabeth Dixon Patty Gainey, 66, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 7, 2005, at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Ed Griggs and Thomas Taylor will officiate with burial in Edwards Chapel cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gainey died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Nancy Player Dixon. She was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Isaac Gainey Jr. of Patrick; sons, Scott Gainey and David Gilbert, both of Patrick; daughters, Patsy Gilbert of Patrick, Nancy Horton of Jefferson, Wanda Gainey of Patrick; sister, Carrie O'Neal of Patrick; seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Norma Jean Gainey; brothers, Earl Dixon and Wade Dixon; sister, Irene Gilbert.
