A graveside service for Judy Faye Spells, 53, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Chatham Hill cemetery in Cheraw, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Perhealth and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Miss Spells died Tuesday, Jan. 4. She was born in Hartsville, the daughter of Folly and Gwendolyn Clark Spells. She was a resident of the Thad E. Saleeby Development Center.
Surviving are her parents of Cheraw; three brothers, Harry Spells of Fort Worth, Texas, Greg Spells of Cheraw and Billy Spells of Pageland; four sisters, Debbie Sellers of Chesterfield, Kathryn (Cookie) Davis, Jerry Spells and Linda Marshall, all of Cheraw.
JULIAN H. JAMES
PATRICK — Graveside services for Julian Henry James, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, with burial in the James Family cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home Inc.
Mr. James died Monday, Jan. 3. He was born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Henry Phillip and Donar McLain James. He was a retired farmer and Bo–Buck Mill employee with 26 years of service. Mr. James was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge 1263 and was a avid hunter and fisherman. He was married
to the late Dorothy Alise James. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia J. Wallace, a great–granddaughter, Angel Mabe, and by a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include one son, Julian Ray James of Patrick; two daughters, Barbara J. Hudson of Hartsville and Donna J. Smith of Patrick; one brother, Jadie James of Chesterfield; four sisters, Katherine Horne of Pageland, Margaret Moore, Nellie James and Elizabeth Wallace, all of Chesterfield; seven grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
ELMER W. MEDLIN
ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Funeral services for Elmer Wolfe Medlin were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church with interment in Arlington Memorial Park, directed by H.M. Patterson & Son, Arlington Chapel in Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Medlin went to be with the Lord on Dec. 23, to begin his eternal celebration in heaven. He was a loving husband of his dear wife, Sara Arp Medlin, to whom he was married
for 53 years. He was a distinguished Korean War veteran who received a Purple Heart for his brave and courageous service to our country as a lieutenant in Company C, 73rd Tank Division.
He graduated from Clemson University in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree. Mr. Medlin was a true orange blooded Tiger fan all of his life. He was a devoted and active member of Peachtree Corners Baptist Church where he taught preschool Sunday school. His faith was an essential part of his life. His life was a living testimony to his commitment and belief that God's love is a powerful force for good in this world. His love and life influenced all who knew him, and he was an inspiration to his family, community and his church. His zeal and zest for life were contagious, his humor and positive outlook were inspiring.
Survivors include three children, Daniel Wolfe Medlin of Kennesaw, Ga., Sarah Elizabeth Gibson of Alpharetta, Ga., and Charles McCall Medlin of Dunwoody, Ga.; two brothers, Reaves McCall of Hartsville and Peter Leroy McCall Jr. of Society Hill, the two towns were Elmer was raised; several grandchildren including Charles Edward Chase Medlin, James Walter Gibson, Sarah Elizabeth Gibson, Lauren Medlin Womack and Chase Medlin Womack.
Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army or to the American Cancer Society.
RUTH YARBOROUGH
Ruth Moody Yarborough, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004. Funeral services will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
HAROLD BROCKINGTON
Funeral services for Harold Brockington, 51, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 31, 2004, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Brockington died Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Lois Hillman Brockington and the late Leroy Brockington. He received his education in the Baltimore, Md., public school system and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla.
Surviving are his mother, Lois Brockington of Hartsville; a daughter, Marsha Adams of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Deloris Brockington, also of Baltimore; six brothers, Robert (Cora) Brockington of Riverside, Calif., Leroy (Barbara) Brockington of Columbus, Ga., the Rev. Hazel (Evelyne) Brockington of Jacksonsville, Fla., Charles (Patricia) Brockington and Larry Brockington, both of Hartsville, the Rev. Horace L. (Sonja) Brockington Sr. of New Bern, N.C.; two aunts, Alberta Roderick and Cleo Frazier, both of Hartsville; two grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
MARGARET L. BROWN
Funeral services for Margaret Lindsay Brown, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Hebron United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jacky Raper officiating. Burial was in the Hebron cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brown, who died Dec. 28, was born in Greer, a daughter of the late Elford and Louvennia Odom Lindsay. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Eloit) Johnson of Anderson, Peggy (Harry) Jones of Florence and Neva (Brooks) Lawson of Darlington; one son, the Rev. Larry (Jean) Brown of Rockingham, N.C.; and several grand and great–grandchildren.
AVA GARDNER
BETHUNE – Funeral services for Ava Shaw Gardner, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Larry Brown and Ed Davidson will officiate with burial in Bethany cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Dec. 31, from 4 to 6 at the Brown residence, 605 Walton St., Bethune. Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gardner, widow of John Jacob Little and Barr H. Gardner Jr., died Tuesday, Dec. 28. Born in Bethune, she was a daughter of the late Lucas Payton and Effie Reeves Shaw. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Bethune Women's Club and was an avid bridge player. She was associated with the family–run Bethune IGA.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Barr H. and Kathy W. Gardner III of Chapin; daughter and son–in–law, Martha and Merrill Brown of Bethune; grandchildren, Lee S. Aiken, Michael A. Brown and Barr Harris Gardner IV. She was preceded in death by her sister Doris Shaw Elliott.
MELISSA B. CARON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Melissa Beasley Caron, 36, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Caron died Saturday, Dec. 18, due to injuries received in an automobile accident in North Carolina. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of Harry Joe Beasley and Lillie Mae Dixon Erickson. She was married
to Robert Caron and owned and operated M&A; Cleaning Service. She attended Vision Assembly Church.
Surviving in addition to her parents and husband are a step–father, Don Erickson of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Timmy Beasley and Ryan Tadlock, both of Darlington; two daughters, Angel Beasley of Myrtle Beach and Heather Thompson of Darlington; three brothers, Charles Wallace, Kenny Ard and Joey Barber, all of Darlington; a sister, Nancy Coach of Florida, and a grandchild, Trinity Bishop.
BOBBY ISHMELL
Funeral services for Bobby Ishmell, 48, will be at 3 p.m. today, Dec. 29, 2004, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Ishmell died Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Palmetto Richland Hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late William and Clara Bell Wilson. He received his education in the Darlington County and Washington, D.C., public school systems and also served in the United States Army Reserve.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ishmell of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Zambrena Ishmell of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Robert Ishmell of Estill, Dwayne Ishmell of North Carolina and Dominick Ishmell of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Diane Ishmell of Hartsville; four brothers, Ernest (Flora) Ishmell of Cheraw, Steve (Donna Jean) Ishmell of Washington, D.C., Lawrence Ishmell of Hartsville and Anthony (Brenda) Ishmell of Monroe; four aunts, Bernetha McLeod and Agnes Wilson, both of Hartsville, Jessie Mae Alexander and Francine (Hosea) McLain of Washington, D.C.; one uncle, George Martin of Florence; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
PAULINE LAND
Funeral services for Pauline Edwards Land, 92, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Grover Johnson and Steve Young officiating with burial in Magnolia cemetery.
Mrs. Land, widow of Matthew Samuel Land, died Tuesday, Dec. 21. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Mary Ann Ingram Edwards. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was retired from Hartsville Print & Dye Works. She was a good Christian woman. -
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Thomas E. and Betty Howle of St. Augustine, Fla., Murry B. Howle of Hartsville; daughter, Edith Gardner of Chesterfield; sister, Hattie Johnson of Hartsville; step–son, Sammy Land of Seneca; step–daughter, Nancy Morrison of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren; seven great–great–grandchildren.
MARGARET McNAIR
Graveside services for Margaret Ann McNair, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Teri Ott officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee or the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
Ms. McNair died Friday, Dec. 24. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late James Leslie and Marguerite McNair McNair. She was a 1942 graduate of Winthrop College and was retired after 26 years from Sonoco Products Co. where she was in the IPD executive offices. She was a member of the Pilot Club and was past president of the UDC. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and in 1991, received a certificate from the women of the First Presbyterian Church recognizing her many contributions to her church. -
Surviving are her brothers, James O. McNair of Hartsville and S. M. Boo McNair of Charlotte, N.C.
MARCUS JACKSON
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Marcus Jackson, 22, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Jackson died Wednesday, Dec. 22, after receiving injuries in a vehicle accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Donnie and Linda Green Jackson. He received his education in the Darlington County public school systems.
Surviving other than his mother and father of Society Hill are a sister, LaToya Jackson of Society Hill; two brothers, Donnie Jackson Jr. and Kendrick Jackson, both of Society Hill; a daughter, Aleshia Jackson of Cheraw; a maternal grandmother, Arsenia Isaac of Society Hill; two maternal grandfathers, Toby Harrison of Winston–Salem, N.C., and Henry Isaac of Society Hill; several nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
PALMER SANDERS
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Palmer Sanders were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Lee Street Church of God with the Rev. Charles L. Aaron Sr. officiating. Burial followed in Lamar Church of God cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Sanders died Friday, Dec. 24, in a Florence nursing home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Albert and Mary Mashack Sanders. He was the widower of Eula Mae Dubose Sanders.
He was educated in the Darlington County public schools. At an early age he was a member of Lamar Church of God. In 1943, he made his home in New York City where he was gainfully employed and was a member of the Congregational Church of God where he served as a member of the Senior Choir, the Trustee Board and Deacon Board. After returning to South Carolina, he became a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon (Bennie L.) Boston of Darlington; three grandsons, Bennie G. (Shan) Boston of Marion, Palmer S. (Michelle) Boston and Joseph T. Boston, both of Florence; a granddaughter, Chelsea S. Boston of Darlington; great– grandchildren, Lafonda, Brandon, Lavonda and Janelle Boston, all of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Eugenia S. McCaw of New York City and Mrs. Mary S. Brunson of Sumter; two brothers–in–law, Norsessor Dock Dubose and Asbury Son (Gerthena) Washington, both of Florence; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nine siblings preceded him in death.
GEORGE L. STROUD
CHERAW — Memorial services for George Leland Stroud, 50, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Stroud died Tuesday, Dec. 21. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late Thomas Simpson and Elma Chisholm Stroud. He was a retired Millwright.
Survivors include his wife, Machaelle Smith Stroud of the home; three daughters, Brandi L. Stroud of the home, Shannon S. Loflin and Chasity L. Stroud of Cheraw; three grandchildren, Ashton Parson, Alex and Taylor Loflin; one sister, Joyce S. Byrd of Patrick; his aunt who helped raise him, Louise Stroud; and a number of nieces and nephews.
