SAMMY WAITERS

Funeral services for Sammy Waiters, 64, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 2004, at St. John United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Waiters died Sunday, Dec. 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John Wesley and Queenie Addison Waiters. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and attended St. John United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Annette Pooler Waiters of Hartsville; two sons, Rickey Brisbon and Randy Waiters, both of Hartsville; three sisters, Carrie (Joe) Scott of Columbia, Brenda (Johnny) Cosom and Wilhelmia Adams, both of Hartsville; two brothers, Willie Lee Waiters and Williams (Faye) Waiters, also of Hartsville; one grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MAZIE LEE WILSON

Funeral services for Mazie Lee Toney Wilson, 75, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Centerville AME Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilson died Sunday, Dec. 12, in Wilmington, Del., after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Newton and Della Smalls Toney. She was a graduate of Butler High School and was a member of Centerville AME Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star Myrtle Lodge No. 56, Joint Stock No. 726, Household of Ruth, Helping Hand Club, Senior Choir, Missionary Society and the Gospel Chorus.

Surviving her loss are six daughters, Addie Richardson, Patricia Bailey and Barbara Dickerson, all of Wilmington, Del., Hazel (Cliff) Cain of Baltimore, Md., Linda (Prince) Chandler of Columbia and Deborah Gentry of Hartsville; two sons, Sylvester (Lucretia) Wilson Sr. of Hartsville and John (Terri) Wilson of Columbia; two sisters, Ruth Forte of Philadelphia, S.C., and Samie Lee; three brothers, Lorine, Willie and Evander; 22 grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

JAMES E. McCALL

Funeral services for James E. McCall, 70, will be 2:30 p.m. today, Dec. 15, 2004, at Southside Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. McCall died Thursday, Dec. 9, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Murray and Annie Miles McCall. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of Southside Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Mae Jackson McCall of Hartsville; four daughters, Dorothy (Chris) McDaniel, Jeanette (David) Lucas, Janie Jackson and Shirley (Henry) Moses, all of Hartsville; four sons, Clinden (Shirley) McCoy, Eddie Ray (Linda) McCoy, Larry McCall and Eddie Ray McCall, all of Hartsville; five sisters, Dorothy (Henry) Jackson, Janie Lee (Ike) Parker, Rosa Mae Kennedy, Sarah Lee (Willie) Coe and Shirley McCall, all of Hartsville; two brothers, David (Olivia) McCall and Leroy (Audrey) McCall, both of Hartsville; six sister–in–laws; four brother–in–laws; 29 grandchildren; 39 great–grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

LINDA K. ALFORD

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Mrs. Linda K. Alford, 53, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, in Flat Creek Baptist Church, the Rev. John L. Williams, pastor, Pastor Gino Jennings officiating. Burial followed in Round O Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Alford died Wednesday, Dec. 8, in a Charleston hospital after an illness. She was born in Thomasville, N.C., a daughter of the late Dewey and Roxanna Huntley.

She was a member of the First Church Of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Florence.

Survivors include her husband, Roosevelt Alford Sr. of the home; a son, Roosevelt Alford Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; four daughters, Alisa (Kendrick) Murray, Anna (Terrence) James, both of Mobile, Ala., Tonya Felton and Layce Alford, both of the home; a goddaughter, Erika Chatman of Florence; two brothers, Jerry Huntley and Quinzell Huntley, both of High Point, N.C.; a mother–in–law, Mrs. Sue Genia Josey of Darlington; 16 grandchildren; nine sisters–in–law; five brothers–in–law; four aunts; an uncle and a host of nieces and nephews.

A sister, Claudine Lee, and special grandchild, Aniyah Chatman, preceded her in death.

The family is receiving friends at the residence at 1214 Sopkins Ave., Florence.

JAMES JOYE SR.

James William Joye Sr., 67, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at his home after a six year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Joye was born in Darlington County, son of the late James L. Joye and Ernestine Tallon Joye Walker. He was a retired police officer after service in Lamar for 14 years and then Hartsville for 15 years. He was Mason and was a member of the S.C. National Guard, the Regulators Car Club and Lamar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Morrell Joye of Hartsville; son, James W.Bill (Julie) Joye Jr., of Hartsville; six daughters, Patsy (Mike) Boyles of Lamar, Sallie Joye (Mike) Barnes of Florence, Denise (Andy) Atkinson of Hartsville, Karen (Randy) Parnell of Lamar, Lisa (Cliff) Gilbert of Hartsville and Cindy Chapman, also of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; one brother, Robert E.Robby (Gloria) Joye of Lamar; a niece, Sheila (Van) Dowling and nephew, Eddie Joye.

Memorials are suggested to Hartsville Police Department, Widows and Children Fund, 135 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

GLADYS LAYTON

Funeral services for Gladys Atkinson Layton, 86, were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Bible Truth Holiness Church with the Revs. Hazel Mixon and Steven Winburn officiating. Burial followed in Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bible Truth Holiness Church, Box 124, Lydia, SC 29079.

Mrs. Layton, widow of Milton Lee Layton, died Friday, Dec. 10. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Cohen and Pearl Wallace Atkinson. She was a charter member of Bible Truth Holiness Church and a dedicated Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years. She loved farm work, picking cotton and baby sitting.

Surviving are her son, MiltonJune Layton Jr. of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, LouenaLean Layton, Gracie MaeTot Johnson, MildredMill and Pete Jordan, Judy and Terry Beasley, all of Hartsville; brothers, Ray Atkinson, David Atkinson, both of Hartsville; sisters, Lillian Hayden, Margie Byrd, both of Hartsville, Vivian Staten of Hazelhurst, Ga.; special daughter, the Rev. Hazel Mixon; 10 grandchildren; 22 great–grandchildren; 11 great–great–grandchildren; four step–great–grandchildren; three step–great–great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Clifton Atkinson, Howard Atkinson, Marion Atkinson; sisters, Jettie Stratton, Zoradia Hall; son–in–law, Bobby Johnson; grandson–in–law, Robbie Mooring.

CARL GAINEY

Funeral services for Carl Gainey, 69, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the First Southern Methodist Church with the Rev. Fletcher Rawles officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Southern Methodist Church.

Mr. Gainey died Saturday, Dec. 11. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Leslie and Orena Johnson Gainey. He was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church. He was associated with Milliken and Blumenthal Mills.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Dalrymple of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Ernie and Dora Gainey, Mike and Bonnie Gainey, Reggie and Tonda Gainey, all of Hartsville; sister, Grace Bosman of Hartsville; brother, Howard Gainey of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Georgina Coffey, Spencer Gainey, Emily Brewer and Bennett Gainey.

LARRY LEWELLYN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lawrence LeroyLarry Lewellyn, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, in the Chapel of Mt. Hope cemetery in Florence, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Lewellyn died Saturday, Dec. 11. He was born in Sumter County, the son of the late George Samuel and Thelma Kirby Lewellyn. He served his country in the United States Marines and was a self– employed painter.

Surviving is his son, Charles R. Lewellyn, and his brother, James (Madge) Lewellyn, both of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 or to a charity of choice.

DEBORAH MARTIN

Funeral services for Deborah Webster Martin, 55, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Quitman, Ga. Memorials may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church, 202 Lakeview Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Martin died Thursday, Dec. 9. Born in Burlington, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Bessie Webster. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and was employed with Progress Energy for 25 years.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Brian and Rachel Dawson of Quitman, Ga.; sister, Gail Webster of Hurt, Va.; brother, Kim Webster of Waynesboro, Va.; three grandchildren.

JOSEPH KING

Funeral services for Joseph Edward King, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles McLendon officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. King, widower of Mary Mims King and Frances J. King, died Thursday, Dec. 9. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Hudson and Pearl Blackwell King. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church. He retired from Sonoco after 35 years and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Terry and Joyce King; daughter and son–in–law, Corliss and Jack Maksin of Hartsville; sister, Malverea King Watkins of Hartsville; brother, Gary King of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brad King, Landon King, Kristin King, Lisa Horne, Chad Walden; great–grandchildren, Parker Walden, Anna Katherine Walden, all of Hartsville.

JOE TURNER

DARLINGTON — Joe M. Turner, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Darlington Church of God, with burial following in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by Rev. Jerry Miller and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Turner was born in Florence County, son of the late Lucien and Lottie Huggins Turner. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a barber at Arthur's Barber Shop in Darlington for 43 years. He attended Darlington Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Myrdie Lynch Turner of Darlington; two daughters, Joanne (Larry) Davis of Florence, Kimberly (McIver) Suggs of Darlington; three grandchildren, Ryan Rushing, Matti Rushing and Laura Davis; two brothers, L.W. Turner of Johnsonville and Alton Turner of Columbia; three sisters, Laura Martin of Florence, Ida Ruth Smith of Sumter and Basil Sprouse of Inman.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

ESSIE WALKER

LAMAR — Essie Smith Walker, 92, died Thursday Dec. 9, 2004, at her residence in Florence. A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, in Byrd cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.

Ms. Walker was born in Mississippi, daughter of the late Ernest and Cybil Barnes Smith. Ms. Walker was a housewife and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Thomas Edward Walker.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Wayne Walker and Don Ray Walker, both of Florence; three daughters, Rose Marie Ruiz of Florence, Glinda Dale Griffin of Louisiana, and Anita Jane Daniels of Mississippi; a sister, Lonnie Thorps of Louisiana; a number of grandchildren and great–grandchildren and one great–great granddaughter.

Ms. Walker was preceded in death by four sons and one daughter.
