JOSEPHINE GRACE CHAREST

RALEIGH, N.C. — Josephine Grace Morrone Charest, 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, directed by Brown–Wynne Funeral Home St. Mary's Street. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.

Mrs. Charest was born on July 1, 1926, in Waterbury, Conn., to the late Michael and Marie Columbia Laudate Morrone. She was a devoted homemaker and a loving parent and grandparent.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Charest, in 2004 and also by her brother, Vincent Morrone.

Surviving Mrs. Charest are her son, Robert H. Charest Jr. and his wife Laurie of Apex, N.C.; two daughters, Claudia Charest of Raleigh, N.C., and Laura Ross and her husband Brad of Hartsville; sister, Isabelle M. Porto of Waterbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Jared and Geoff Dixon of Raleigh, N.C., Robert, Chris and Jenny Charest of Apex, N.C., Ashley, Courtney and David Ross of Hartsville.

BILL LOFLIN

DARLINGTON — William Bill Loflin, 76, of Cheraw and formerly of Darlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 25, at Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Loflin was born in Chesterfield County, son of the late Julius T. and Ida King Loflin. He retired from Santee–Cooper Electric Co. and was a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church. Mr. Loflin enjoyed fishing and growing roses.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Hamer Loflin of Cheraw; two daughters, Jean Lee of Darlington and Lynn Graves of Florence; grandchildren, Mike Lyons, Betsy Lyons, Bryan Davis and Lindsey Graves.

Mr. Loflin was preceded in death by brothers, Edmond, John, Jack, Howard, Raymond, Woodrow, Julius and Gary Loflin, and sisters, Edith Baum and Inez Roscoe.

EMMIE RICHARDSON SMITH

CHARLESTON — Mrs. Emmie Richardson Smith Charleston, formally of Hartsville, died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, after an illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.

ED NORTHCUTT

Paul Edward Ed Northcutt, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005. Funeral services will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

MATTHEW BELISSARY

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Matthew Ignatius Belissary, 86, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 25, 2005, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Belissary died Tuesday, Feb. 22, at his home in Darlington. Born in Union, he was the son of the late Belissarius Constatine Belissary and Andronike Psillos Belissary. - Mr. Belissary attended Darlington city schools and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1935. He worked for several years after graduation at his father's and uncle's restaurant, The Deluxe Caf -, in downtown Darlington, on the Square. In World War II, he served in the Naval Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Electra. Mr. Belissary returned from the war, and worked at the Darlington Post Office until his retirement in 1977. He enjoyed many years of scouting as Assistant Scout Master of BSA Troop 501. He was a master sergeant with National Guard Unit 201 Medical Battalion Clearing Co. Headquarters until retirement. Mr. Belissary volunteered at the Good Samaritan Home in Darlington, where he worked with recovering alcoholics.

Mr. Belissary began his church life with baptism in the Greek Orthodox Church, was raised in Darlington's First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school and sang with the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church choir. He was a devoted member of Darlington First Church Of God and was a devout Christian.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Katherine Fokakis Belissary; two daughters and a son–in–law, Dr. Lynne B. and John P.C. Maroney of Sumter and Mary Kay Belissary of Florence; a son and daughter–in–law, Charles M. and Katie Belissary of Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Mrs. Cleo Hall of Ventura, Calif., Mrs. Ethel (Louis) Manos of Darlington and Mrs. Jeri (Arnie) Chapin of Simi Valley, Calif.; a sister–in–law, Mrs. Gail Belissary of Florence; a brother–in–law, Mr. Alan Gilbert of Hollywood, Calif.; four grandchildren, John P.C. Maroney II, Holly B. Maroney, Madison E. Belissary and Matthew E. Belissary; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

CATHERINE DARROW JACKSON

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Catherine Darrow Jackson will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 25, 2005, in Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Jackson died Sunday, Feb. 20, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late William James and Julia Robinson Darrow. She was the widow of Jeremiah Jackson Sr.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Janie Sue Titus, Catherine (Johnnie) Douglas, Shirley Ann Jackson, Evelyn Jackson, Cynthia Rene Jackson, all of Society Hill, and Patricia (James) Blackwell of Patrick; two sons, Willis (Gloria) Jackson and David (Dorothy) Jackson, both of Society Hill; two grandchildren she reared as her own, Melonie (Lawrence) Dubose and Kelvin (Margaret) Jackson; 16 other grandchildren; 28 great–grandchildren; a son–in–law, Hazel McQueen; a step–sister, Mendetta Martin of Hartsville; two sisters–in–law; a brother–in–law; nieces; nephews; two goddaughters, Bonnie Jean Moody and May Jelly Mitchell.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Evelyn Jackson, of 1012 Russell Road, Society Hill.

FOSTER C. JOHNSON

Funeral services for Foster Coyt Johnson, 70, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 23, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Revs. Billy Campbell and Henry L. Johnson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson died Monday, Feb. 21. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Coyt and Mary Grantham Johnson. He was a member and past deacon of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. He was a contractor for many years, the owner and operator of Factory Mill Cloth Outlet, and the owner of many rental properties. He loved to help the underprivileged and was a caring and loving man who greatly loved his family. He had a love of antique cars when he wasn't working. Mr. Johnson served his country in the National Guard.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Edna Johnson of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Jerry and Anita Tyner, Glenn and Susan Johnson, Calvin Johnson, all of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Lori Ann and Randy Parker of Hartsville; sisters, Ann Gainey of Patrick, Alice Ammons of Wisconsin; brothers, James Johnson and Lide Johnson, both of Hartsville, and Lavern Johnson of Florence; 11 grandchildren; three great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Johnson, and sister, Ada Mae Wilson.

HENRY L. JOHNSON JR.

HEATH SPRINGS — Services for Henry Lee Johnson Jr., 45, were held at 4 p.m Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. The Revs. Sam N. Thomas and Christopher Wingard officiated, directed by Mahaffey Funeral Home of Lancaster.

Lee died Friday, Feb. 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. He was the son of Henry Lee Johnson Sr. and Martha Robinson Johnson. He was a resident at the Saleeby Center in Hartsville for 25 years. Lee never went to school but he taught a lot of people.

He is survived by his loving family, parents, Henry Johnson Sr. and Mrs. Martha Robinson Johnson of Heath Springs; one brother, Mark L. (Beth) Johnson of Lancaster; one sister, Mrs. Melinda J. (Peter) Iannuzzi of Demarest, N.J.; nephews and nieces, Katie, Michael and Peter Iannuzzi and Andrew, Daniel, Benjamin and Rebecca Johnson. He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Elmo and Mae Sullivan Johnson and by maternal grandparents, Charles Lee and Ada Adams Robinson.

EVERETTE D. CAMPBELL

CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Everette D. Campbell, 75, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in Chesterfield cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Campbell died Friday, Feb. 18. He was born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Willie Duncan Campbell and Mary Etta Welch Rayfield Campbell. He was a deputy with the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Department for the past 30 years. Mr. Campbell was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the American Legion Post 74, a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge 220, and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Pruitte, Carson and Bivens Rayfield and Olin, Jewell and Joe Campbell.

Survivors are his wife, Shirley Parker Campbell of the home; one brother, the Rev. Billy Campbell of Hartsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

ANNIE MAE SANDERS

WILLINGSBORO, N.J. – Mrs. Annie Mae Sanders, formerly of Pamplico, died Thursday, Feb. 17, in Willingsboro, N.J. She was a sister of the Rev. Ira Timmons of Florence and Legett Timmons of Pamplico. Local arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

HAZEL LEWIS

Funeral services for Hazel King Lewis, 92, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Swift Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Rivera officiating. Burial followed in Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Road, Hartsville, SC 29550, or Ministry for the Aging, C/O South Carolina Baptist Convention, 190 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210–8254.

Mrs. Lewis died Saturday, Feb. 19. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Dantzler and Edel McNeese King. She was the oldest active member of Swift Creel Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Columbia College and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Thomas J. and Jessie Lewis Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Mary and Ronald Holland of Hartsville; sister, Vivian Kelly of Hartsville; special friends, Thomas Holland, Rhonda and George Singletary; grandchildren, Lawrence Holland, Rhonda Brugh, T. J. Lewis III; great–grandchildren, Lewis Holland and Heath Brugh.

VIOLA E. BERRY

MECHANICSVILLE — Viola Erwin Berry, age 86, died Saturday morning, Feb. 19, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 21, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by Pastors Frankie Tanner and Danny Stone and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Berry was born in Marlboro County, daughter of the late Ernest and Wilma Polson Erwin, and the widow of Ernest Ervin Berry. She was a housewife and a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church, where she was a member of Young at Heart and the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.

Surviving are three daughters and sons–in–law, Ernestine B. and Roy Smith of Albermarle, N.C., Margaret B. and Jimmy Douglas of Darlington, Sandra B. and Tommy Evans of Effingham; 10 grandchildren; 14 great–grandchildren; three great–great–grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth LaFever of California; two brothers, Alton Erwin and Homer Ervin, both of Florence; and a special friend, Peggy Schrum.

Mrs. Berry was preceded in death by a step–mother, who was like a mother to her, Mary Elizabeth Erwin; a daughter, Betty Stone; and two sisters, Mary Lou Jarrell and Francis Aunda.

JOHN A. NELSON

Funeral services for John Anderson Nelson, 78, who died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, were held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Nelson was born in Hartsville, a son of the late John and Mary Ann Davis Nelson. He was a retired accountant, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are three daughters, Paulette Rhoton of Moncks Corner, Debra Doerr of Mt. Dora, Fla., Jo Ann Hampton of Beaufort; three sons, David Nelson of Decatur, Ala.; John Nelson Jr. of Arelta, Calif., Troy A. Nelson of Modesto, Calif.; 27 grandchildren and 24 great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Watson Nelson, and a daughter, Anna Marie Nelson.

ROBERT H. LEWIS

Funeral services for Robert H. Lewis Sr., 62, were held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Lewis Family cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Mr. Lewis was born in Richland County the son of the late John Hobert Lewis Sr. and Jessie Shaw Lewis. He was a retired electrician.

Surviving are one daughter, Cheryl Lewis of Lexington; three sons, Robert Lewis Jr., Chris Steven Lewis, both of Pelion, John Clayton Lewis of Lexington; one brother, Jack Lewis Sr. of Hartsville; four sisters, Carolyn Lewis of Ridgeway, Lula Mae Crenshaw of Spartanburg, Mary Alice Dixon of Hartsville, Wanda Lee Taylor of West Columbia; four grandchildren, Jessica, Amber, Justin and Christian; four great–grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor, Makayla and Zane. He also had many friends but one special buddy, Patrick Conyers.

ALBERT WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Albert Pete Williams, 57, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 23, 2005, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Williams died Saturday, Feb. 19, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Lula Mae Williams and the late Ira Williams. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system.

Surviving other than his mother are two daughters, Christan Goodson of Columbia and Tina Williams of Hartsville; two sons, Albert E. Williams Jr. of Columbia and Tyrone Johnson of Hartsville; an adopted son, Patrick Johnson; two sisters, Ellen Toney and Melissa Ann Williams; three brothers, Ivory Joe Williams, Vance Williams and Elve Williams; two special friends, Jo–Ann Johnson of Hartsville and Martha Williams of Columbia; two aunts, three uncles, four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
