FLORENCE — Funeral services for Bessie A. Bailey Easterling, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 23, 2005, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ Of The Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial will be in the Chesterfield Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Easterling died Saturday, Feb. 19. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Peter and Bessie Campbell Bailey. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of The Apostolic Faith Inc.
Surviving are eight daughters, Corine E. (John) Sanders, Barbara Easterling and Irene Easterling, all of Florence, Geraldine Thomas of Orangeburg, Bessie Mae (Lester) Lewis of Raleigh, N.C., Rosanna (Roald) Opsahl of Oslo, Norway, Betty Antrum and Louise Bailey, both of Ansonia, Conn.; six sons, Jimmy D. Easterling of Hartsville, Fred Easterling of Chesterfield, Kenneth Easterling of Florence, Amos (Shirley) Easterling of Darlington, Johnny (Kerri) Easterling of Atlanta, Ga., and Luke (Erma) Bailey of Raleigh, N.C.; a special daughter, Deborah Parker; 14 grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren and other close relatives.
SUSIE J. SWEAT
DILLON — Funeral services for Susie James Sweat, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Dillon Second Baptist Church with burial in Evergreen cemetery, directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sweat died Thursday, Feb. 17, in Wilson Medical Center. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late George Washington James and Lilly Barefoot James. She was the widow of the late Luther Sweat. Mrs. Sweat was a member of Dillon Second Baptist Church, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her niece, Sybil Lee Murray of Goldsboro, N.C.; nephews, Bobby Lee Sr. and Bobby Lee Jr., both of Hartsville, Don Lee of Darlington, Jerry Lee of California and Ed Lee of Florida.
Mrs. Sweat was preceded in death by her son, Willie Preston Sweat.
WILLIS H. GAINEY
Memorial services for Willis Heyward Gainey will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Fourth Street Baptist Church.
Mr. Gainey was born on June 2, 1931, and passed on to be with our Lord and Savior on Jan. 24. His wife, Evelyn, passed in 1989.
He is survived by two sisters, Ruby Dampier of Hartsville and Beatrice Tobias of Darlington; one niece, Persia Dampier of Hartsville, and other siblings and grandchildren in other states.
MARCIA HAWKINS
SURFSIDE BEACH– Graveside services for Marcella “Marcia” Hawkins will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will have visitation from 5 to 7 tonight, Friday, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hawkins died Thursday, Feb. 10, at her home after a very courageous battle with cancer. Born Dec. 30, 1933, in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Benjamin and Marcella Johnson Stogner. She retired after 25 years with the Darlington County school system as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant and a secretary. She moved to Surfside Beach in 1994 and was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hawkins was an avid gardener, loved to walk on the beach and spend time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Browning Hawkins, in 1990.
Surviving are daughters, Roscia Hardee and husband Danny J. and Mary Gray and husband Luke, all of Surfside Beach; son, James “Jim” L. Hawkins of Surfside Beach; grandchildren, Christopher “Kit” D. Hardee, Carter O. Gray and Caroline R. Gray, all of Surfside Beach; brother, Lawrence B. Stogner III, of Boone, N.C., and sisters, Noma S. Rudisell and Carter S. Hastings, both of Hartsville.

LUTHER PEAVY
Funeral services for Luther Peavy, 77, will be held today, Feb. 18, 2005, at 4 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Darryl Bogatay, John Griggs, Gregg Griffin and Jimmy Peavy officiating. Burial will be in New Market cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Peavy died Feb. He was born in Richmond County, N.C., a son of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Roscoe Peavy. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, owned and operated Peavy’s Piano Service for more than 40 years and was retired from Sara Lee Hoisery.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita Lane Peavy; daughter, Daphine Peavy; sons, Jimmy (Renee) Peavy, Steve (Deborah L.) Peavy, Gene (Deborah) Peavy, all of Hartsville; grandsons, Jay, Matthew, Will, Joey, Brandon, Devin, Nicholas, Macray Peavy and Chuck and Michael Beasley, all of whom will serve as pallbearers; two great-grandchildren; a special niece, Carla Davis Benton of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

ALICE HENDRIX
Funeral services for Alice Boatwright Hendrix, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 18, 2005, at the First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Darryl Bogatay will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hendrix, widow of Franklin Wallace Hendrix, died Tuesday, Feb. 15. Born in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late Frank Hunley and Nancy Davis Boatwright. Mrs. Hendrix was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, taught Sunday school for many years and helped provide meals for families in need. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell L. and Henrietta Hendrix of Hartsville, Larry E. and Eva Hendrix of Cheraw; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and William L. Jeffords of Darlington, Gail “Susie” and Dean Sellers of Hartsville, Joyce Lovato of Charleston; sister, Ophelia Simpson of Patrick; brother, James Olin Boatwright of Patrick; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
RICK NORTON SR.
Funeral services for Richard “Ric” Ravenel Norton Sr., 53, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 18, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Milton Frazier will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.
Mr. Norton died Tuesday, Feb. 15. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Carolyn Johnson Norton and the late Robert L. Norton. He was a resident of Fuquay Varina, N.C., and was retired from the Wake County GSA.
Surviving are his wife, Sandy Mayfield Norton of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; son, Richard R. Norton Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; daughter, Carol N. Beard of Inman; mother of Hartsville; sister, Bobi C. Norton of North Myrtle Beach; grandsons, Shuler Bentley and Jake Bentley, both of Inman; nephew, Colt Norton of North Myrtle Beach; two miniature Dobermans, Samson and Delilah; many loving relatives and friends.
ELZIE LEE GANDY
Memorial services for Elzie Lee Gandy will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at 4 p.m. in Westview cemetery with the Rev. Tony Hemphill officiating, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gandy, widow of Harold W. Gandy, was born in Darlington County. She was the daughter of the late E. Boyd Gilbert and Mattie M. Brown Gilbert. Mrs. Gandy was a Charter Member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Heyward W. and Joy Gandy of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Lacinda Snyder, Scott Gandy, both Virginia Beach, Va., Ronnie Newsome, Debbie Whatley, Kelly Newsome, all of North Augusta, Bobby Newsome of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean G. Newsome.

INEZ FUNDERBURK
Funeral services for Marie Inez Warr Funderburk, 81, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Lakeview Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Boswell and the Rev. Dr. Don Purvis will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Funderburk, widow of Laney P. Funderburk, died Thursday, Feb. 17. Born in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late Grady and Mary Howle Warr. She was a devoted member of Lakeview Baptist and was a loving, caring, and giving mother, sister and grandmother.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Gail Funderburk of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Pete Lewis of Hartsville; sisters, Myrtle Beasley and Addie Funderburk, both of Hartsville; brother, Jake Warr of Hartsville; grandchildren, Charlene Malloy, Heather Cook, Stephanie Matthews, Stewart Funderburk; great-grandchild, Brittany Malloy.

MARGARET S. LANE
Graveside services for Margaret Smith Lane, 69, who died Feb. 17, 2005, will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. in New Life cemetery in Marion, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Margaret was born in Marion County, a daughter of the late Rupert W. and Montague McRae Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Phil Lane of Wadesboro, N.C., and Greg Lane of Hartsville; a sister, Mable Edwards of Bladenboro, N.C.; a brother, G.B. Smith of Mullins.
IDELIA J. BESS
Funeral services for Idelia Jackson Bess will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Centerville AME Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 7 at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Bess, wife of the late Harold Hercules Bess, was the daughter of the late Boykin and Dell Brown Jackson of Hartsville. She was a 1945 graduate of Morris College in Sumter with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. Upon graduating from college, she returned to her hometown to teach school. Futher studies included Allen University, Coker College and White Plains Institute, White Plains, N.Y. She was a retired teacher for 36 years from the Darlington County School District and was respectfully known throughout the Centerville Community and the Hartsville area as Mrs. Bess, teacher and mentor.
On April 17, 1999, the Centerville AME Church Lay Organization sponsored its first Mrs. Centerville AMEC ’99 (ladies 70 years of age & older) and The Mother’s Board Production of which Mrs. Bess was crowned winner and was selected as one of 10 ladies to serve on the first Centerville African Methodist Episcopal Church Mother’s Board.
As a life long member of Centerville AME Church, she served as the church secretary, superintendent of Church School, teacher of the Church School Adult Class, a member of the church choir and Church Lay Organization Representative. She was a member of the United Order of Tents, J. R. Giddings and Jollifee Union, Jeanette Tent No. 193, Myrtle Chapter 56 Order of Easter Star and the Morris College National Alumni Association. She has served as the church AME Conference Delegate for the past several years and faithfully supported her church.
ARTHUR LEE MARCUS
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Arthur Lee Marcus were held noon Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, in St. James United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Marcus died Wednesday, Feb. 9, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Edward and Lennie Wingate Marcus. He was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1958 and later attended Florence-Darlington Technical College. He served his country in the U.S. Army for 13 years and was honorably discharged. At an early age, he joined St. John United Methodist Church. Years later, he joined St. James United Methodist Church where he served as a lay speaker, a member of the United Men Organization and the Men’s Chorus.
In the community, he was a member of the Pee Dee United Elks Lodge No. 1679, Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 17, King Wingate American Legion Post No. 210, D.A.V. Chapter No. 72, E. B. Burroughs Royal Arch No. 49 and several city and county committees.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Slater Marcus of the home; a daughter, Angela Lynette Marcus of the home; three sons, Arthur Lenard Marcus of Darlington, Xavier LaVern Marcus of Columbia and Master Sgt. Anthony (Luella) Marcus of Killeen, Texas; two special grandchildren, Audrey and Arturo Marcus; seven other grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Marcus of Roosevelt, N.Y.; a sister, Carl Lee Seymour of Portsmouth, Va.; an uncle, Mr. Al Garner of Red Springs, N.C.
ANNIE LEE DICKEY
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Annie Lee Dickey, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dickey died Saturday, Feb. 12, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ike and Martha Benjamin. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system. She was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and served on the Flower Ladies Club and the choir.
Surviving are five daughters, Annie (Isaiah) Sims, Jane (Eugene) Tedder, Kimberly Small and LeKeisha Dickey, all of Darlington, and Margaret (Howard) Ketter of Sumter; two sons, Robert Smith and Craig Dickey, both of Darlington; two adopted daughters, Pearline Floyd and Ruthphine Graham; two sisters, Reatha Benjamin and Naomi (Theo) Sanders, both of Darlington; one brother, Ike Benjamin of Florence; in-laws; 12 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
MIKEY MELTON
Memorial services for Curtis Michael “Mikey” Melton, 49, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with David Martin officiating. The family received friends following the service.
Mr. Melton died Saturday, Feb. 12. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of James Howard Melton and the late Beatrice Peavy Melton.
Surviving are his wife, Debra Bolden Melton of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Erica and Jeffery O’Neal of Hartsville; father of Hartsville; brothers, James H. Melton Jr., William A. Melton, Phillip E. Melton, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Blake O’Neal, Dylan O’Neal and Noah O’Neal.
