Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine Johnson, the relatives and friends, the adopted mother-aunt of Robert Shine of N.Y.C., sister of Horace Reid, sister-in-law of Mary Shine, aunt of Louise Lloyd, Albert Milligan, Leonard Shine, Raymond Shine, Louise Shine all of Moncks Corner, S.C., aunt of Rosa Chisolm of Charleston, S.C., Francis May of N.J., Dorothy Lynch, Louis Shine of Ga., host of grand-nieces, grand-nephews, other relatives and friends, are invited to attend her funeral services on Monday, June 3, 2002, 1 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, Hwy. 315, in Moncks Corner, S.C. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will no family hour.

COOLER, Jasper
Entered into eternal rest May 31, 2002, Jasper "Jack" Sidney Cooler husband of Annie Mae Harrelson Cooler. Residence, North Charleston, S.C. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside funeral services in Beaufort Memorial Gardens, Beaufort, S.C., Tuesday, June 4, at 4 o'clock. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road, Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock.
Mr. Cooler was born January 17, 1913, a son of Dixie Cooler and Alma Sauls Cooler. He was a retired carpenter at Parris Island Marine Base, Beaufort, S.C., and also retired with 20 years of service with U.S. Army and S.C. Army National Guard. He was Baptist.
He is survived by two step-daughters, Carol W. Infinger of North Charleston and Shirley Ann Greene of Coconut Grove, Fla.; three half-sisters, Bessie Smith, Margaret Long and Betty Coley, of Beaufort, S.C.; four brothers, Homer Cooler and Clayton Cooler of Beaufort, S.C., Edward Riley of DeMott, Ind. and Raymond Cooler of Ky.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Bank of America Building, North Charleston, S.C. 29406.
RIGSBEE, Nancy
Nancy Sherrer Rigsbee, 70, died May 30, 2002 at her residence. Born March 27, 1932 in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late James G. and Adaline Sherrer. She was a graduate of Fassifern School, Hendersonville, N.C. and attended Mary Washington College and the University of Georgia. Mrs. Rigsbee retired in 1990 as a social worker from the Charleston County Department of Social Services after 18 years. She was a member of Sangaree Baptist Church. Mrs. Rigsbee is survived by two daughters and their husbands Adaline Sherrel Lawson and Paul C. Lawson, Jr., Summerville, S.C., and Nancy Melissa Rigsbee Howard and James M. Howard, Charleston, S.C.; son, Leonard Herbert Oliver, Jr., Daytona, Fla., sister, Sarah Sherrer Smith, Charleston, S.C.; sister-in-law Carolyn Hopkins, Charleston, S.C.; three grandchildren, Ashley Melissa Lawson, Michael James Howard, and Leonard Herbert Oliver, III and his wife Brandy Oliver, two great-grandchildren Cheyenne Rose Oliver, and James Grady McMillan, IV; and nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002 at Riverview Memorial Park, 3715 Azalea Drive, Charleston. MASSEY, Jr., Elijah
Elijah Massey, Jr., 81, a retired crane operator of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, and husband of Ernestine Gibbs Massey, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. He will be eulogized on Monday, June 3, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Calvary Baptist Church, 387 Sumter St., Charleston, S.C. The family will be receiving friends at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, June 2, 2002, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Remains to the church on Monday at 12 noon. Interment, Red Top Community cemetery.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Ernestine Gibbs Massey; sons, Ralph Massey (Betty), Earl H. Ford (Mary), Spc. Moses Jamiel Massey of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; daughters, Jenell Ford-Massey and Delores F. SHAFTO, Richard
Mr. Godfrey Richard Shafto, 98, a resident of The Seabrook, Hilton Head Island, S.C. died Friday, May 31. He was born April 22, 1904 in Cliffwood, N.J. He was a pioneer in broadcasting in South Carolina. He began his broadcasting career in Columbia, S.C. as General Manager of WIS and was a leading force in the growth and development of WIS as it grew into Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation and he became president of an organization that controlled six radio stations and, three television stations, and six cable television systems.
Mr. Shafto was the first President of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association, a Director of the National Association of Broadcasters, Chairman of the Association's Television Code Review Board, and Chairman of the NBC Stations Planning and Advisory Committee. He was also the first President of the Broadcast Pioneers Educational Fund, Inc. He was inducted into the S.C. Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1973. He served as a Director to the Liberty Corporation since 1969.
As a result of his expertise, Shafto became a consultant with the Office of War Information during World War II and he represented the United States as a delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization in Paris in 1949. He contributed generously of his time and resources to numerous civic, educational, and humanitarian causes nationally and in Columbia, the Midlands and Hilton Head Island.
Mr. Shafto is predeceased by his wife Treva Hanson Shafto and his second wife Elizabeth Jordan Shafto; a sister, Florence Shafto Wade and a brother Wesley Simes Shafto. A sister, Mary Shafto Rohr of Pascagoula, Miss. survives and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. A niece, Patricia M. Moss of Hickory, N.C. is accepting condolences for the family.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Hilton Head Island, S.C. at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4. CRAWFORD, Roxie
ATHENS, GA. - Roxie Reid Crawford, widow of the late Luther J. Crawford, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Anna Wilson Reid. She was born on December 1, 1929, in Union, S.C. and moved to Athens in 1992 from Statesville, N.C. where she lived for 23 years. She was a Clerical Secretary until her retirement in 1980, and recently worked as a receptionist for A Flair with Hair.
Mrs. Crawford was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church, the Christine Jenkins Sunday School Class, and was active in the Christian Women's Club before her illness. She was a member of IPTAY for over 30 years, and loved the ClemsonTigers.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda and son-in-law, David Dean, son Ronald Jay, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Crawford all of Bogart, and daughter Susan and Scott Seitz of James Island, S.C. Grandchildren Jami Prouty of Augusta, Dana Gibson of Dacula, Michelle Doolittle of Watkinsville and Jonathan Crawford, Staci Crawford, Roxi Dean, and Allison Melancon of Bogart. Her great-grandchildren Lindsey and Natalie Prouty, Kendall Doolittle, Chase and Avery Gibson, and Cole and Anna Melancon were her pride and joy.
Mrs. Crawford is also survived by her three sisters, Eleanor Babb of Bishopville, Virginia Smith and Martha Price of Union, and a brother, Carl Reid of Clifton, N.J. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at LORD AND STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME WEST, with Dr. Stewart Simms officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at the Union Memorial Gardens, Union, S.C. at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Mitchell officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, June 3, 6:30-9 p.m. at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West.
Pallbearers will be her grandson Jonathan Crawford, and grandsons-in-law, Ted Gibson, Michael Prouty, Michael Doolittle, Rusty Melaneon, and nephew Perrin Babb.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jill Williams, Sandy Boring, Gunn and Anne Sawyer, Bill and Jackie Reardon, Brad Rutledge and sons, the Classic Renegades, members of the Sunshine Sunday School Class of Beech Haven Baptist Church, Josh Moore, Dan and Anita Barron, staff of Flair with Hair, Vaudie Hillman, and friends and staff of Lanier Gardens-Talmadge Terrace.
The family will be at the home of her daughter, Linda Dean, where Mrs. Crawford previously lived before moving to Lanier Garden-Talmadge. Sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Charles Braucher, Dr. Lisa Patterson, Dr. Edward Novey and their staff for their care and consideration during her illness.

Mrs. Calvert was born March 13, 1913, in Birmingham, Alabama, a daughter of Clarence English and Carrie Hall English. Mrs. Calvert moved to Charleston in 1939. She was a homemaker and a member of the Cherokee Place United Methodist Women's Club, Josephine Abrams Circle and Bradley Bible Class.
She is survived by one son, George C. and daughter-in-law Diana Calvert of Wagoner, Okla., and one grandson Timothy G. Calvert of Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Calvert was preceded in death by her son Leonard C. Calvert.

OTT, Jr., William
William J. Ott, Jr., 85, of Charleston, died Tuesday, May 28, at a local hospital. Born in Baltimore, Md., to the late William J. and Agatha H. Schaech Ott, Sr. He was a graduate of Baltimore Polytehic Institute, and attended John Hopkins University. Mr. Ott retired with 43 years of service from Exxon Mobile. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus where he received the 4th degree. Mr. Ott was past president of the Exxon Annuitants Club. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Farley, and husband, John of Maumee, Ohio, a brother, Robert Ott of Estero, Fla., a sister, Helen O. Burns of Baltimore, Md., and four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren all survive Mr. Ott. The family will receive friends, 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 2, with a vigil service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 3, at 10 a.m., at Church of Nativity with burial in Holy Cross cemetery. Mr. Laffoday died Sunday, June 2, 2002. Born in Florence, he was a son of Patricia "Pat" Jordan Whittle and the late Herbert D. Laffoday. He was a member of State Street Baptist Church.

BAMBERG - Daisy Boyd Jones of 1162 North Street, Bamberg, S.C., widow of the late R.A. Jones died on Sunday, June 2, 2002 at Lexington Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late Ed Boyd and the late Ravania Boyd. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed doing yard work.
