Pearline Suber Williams, 92, wife of Claude Williams Sr. of 237 Beltline Road, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Williams was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Fairfield County, a daughter of the late Beauregard Suber and Mary Rabb Suber. She was a domestic worker and a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Claude Williams Jr. of the home; two granddaughters, Pearline Williams of York and Joann Montgomery of Union; and a sister, Florence Worthy of Union. The family is at the home, 237 Beltline Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.
Ouida B. Gregory
Ouida Brewer Gregory, 77, widow of States E. Gregory of 118 Spruce St., died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at 2:45 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Gregory was born in Eagle Lake, Texas, on Nov. 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Travis H. Brewer and Esta White Bayless. She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and a member of the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School Class. Mrs. Gregory was retired from Milliken & Co., Excelsior Plant.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne E. and Susan H. Gregory of Union; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl G. and Boyd Black of Camden and Beverly G. and Gordon Hamilton of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Wayne E. Gregory Jr. of Greenville, Alex Gregory of Union and Neal Hamilton of Boone, N.C. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a brother, Travis H. Brewer.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tommy McManus. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Wilbur Smith III, Brown Fant, Hal Gregory, Sam White, Donnie Betenbaugh, Sammy Sumner and Chuck Malone. The body remained at the funeral home where the family will received friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 7:30.
The family is at the home, 118 Spruce St., Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
William F. Quinn
William F. Quinn, 74, of 104 Webber Lake Road, died Wednesday July 9, 2003, at 4:28 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Quinn was born in Union on March 29, 1929, a son of the late William Ranzy Quinn and Evie Parham Quinn. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union.
Mr. Quinn was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Air Force and was a prisoner of war. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the VFW. Mr. Quinn was formerly employed as parts manager for Roper Chevrolet. Surviving are two grandsons, Ronnie Ellis of the home and Francis Ellis of Union; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Ellis of the home and Summer Ellis of Union; and a sister, Irene Johnson of Union.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Billy Dean Gibson. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 104 Webber Lake Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Union County Cancer Services, c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Pearline S. Williams
Survivors include a son, Claude Williams Jr., of the home; two granddaughters, Pearline Williams of York and Joann Montgomery of Union; and a sister, Florence Worthy of Union. The family is at the home, 237 Beltline Road. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Maple Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Sadler.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be at the Union Community Funeral Home until 7 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church Friday morning at 10 to await the hour of service. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Martha A. Kitzak
SUMTER Martha James Allen Kitzak, 88, widow of John Kitzak, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at a local nursing home. Mrs. Kitzak was born in Chester County, the daughter of the late James Allen and Beulah Grant Allen.
Surviving are a son, John (Duke) Kitzak and wife Linda of Sumter; a daughter, Rose Kennedy and husband Donald of Sumter; a brother Raymond Allen and a sister, Victoria Gunning, both of Union; two grandchildren, Tobby Kennedy and Contrina Hayes and husband Benjamin; and two great-grandchildren, Zackery Hayes and Chase Hayes.
Funeral services were held Thursday in Sumter. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Lillian W. McNeace
Lillian Christine Williams McNeace, 82, of 305 W. Hillcrest Ave., widow of Marvin Leroy McNeace, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
Mrs. McNeace was born in the Cross Keys House in the Cross Keys Community on Aug. 10, 1919, a daughter of the late John Baxter Williams and Mary Inez Murphy Williams. She was a member of Sumner Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. McNeace and her late husband were owners and operators of Mac's Restaurant in Charlotte, N.C., before retirement. She attended Union High School.
Surviving are four sisters, Ruth H. McNeace, Ruby E. Eubanks and Frances W. Green, all of Union and Shirley R. Pearson of Buffalo; two brothers, the Rev. Boyd H. Williams of Union and Larry Hope Williams of Buffalo and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Boyd H. Williams and the Rev. Bobby Crocker.
Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Charles Williams, Mike McNeace, Travis Williams, Ronnie McNeace, Terry McNeace, Jerry Williams, Jimmy Dean Williams, Marion Eubanks and Stanley Eubanks.
The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Joyce and Vernon Abee, Wayne and Brenda Williams, Earl and Fran Peigler, Marc Howe, Howard Howe, Roger and Sadie Sumner, John and Shannon Williams, Robert and Cindy Williams, Shawn Howe and Kevin and Gretchen Williams.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 305 West Hillcrest Ave., Union. Memorials may be made to Sumner Memorials Baptist Church, P. O. Box 59, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Steve Tinsley
Steve W. Tinsley, 95, of Covenant Place of Sumter, widower of Louise Cooper Tinsley, formerly of Park Drive, Union, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at 7:25 a.m. in Tuomey Health Care System in Sumter after a brief illness.
Mr. Tinsley was born in Union on Sept. 12, 1907, a son of the late Jones Evans Tinsley and Carrie Stevenson Tinsley. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Mr. Tinsley was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of South Carolina and until his retirement was associated with Tinsley Jewelry Store in Union which was founded in 1857 by his grandfather.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Frances Tinsley Kay and Dr. James F. Kay of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Steve and Louis Kay of Sumter. Mr. Tinsley was predeceased by a sister, Sara Catherine Tinsley. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Window Fund, 201 S. Church St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Wanda D. Thompson
Wanda Denise Thompson, 33, of 10007 Santuc Drive, Carlisle, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born in Union County on Jan. 3, 1970, a daughter of Fredia E. Byrd and David Thompson. She was a member of Thomas Chapel AME Church. She graduated from Union High School and was employed at Burger King.
Surviving in addition to her parents are: two children, Amethia and Deon Thompson of the home; two sisters, Catina Thompson of Santuc and Talisha Dabe of Colorado; two brothers, Xaiver Byrd of Santuc and Carl Jeter of Columbia; grandparents, Willie D. and Willie Mae Kelly of Santuc and Eliza Thompson of Carlisle. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Chapel AME Church. Burial in the church cemetery. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Marie Bishop
Marie Bishop, 96, of 2698 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, died Wednesday July 16, 2003, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Miss Bishop was born in Rose Hill on July 2, 1907, a daughter of the late Walter and Bessie Bishop.
She was an active member of the Salem Baptist Church where she served as organist and pianist for over 30 years. Miss Bishop taught first grade for 40 years. She began her teaching career in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and retired from the Union County School system. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, Walter and Elsie Alverson of Union; Walter and Dianne Bishop of California, Nancy and Maurice Harper of Houston, Texas, William and Leona Bishop of Aiken; Mary Ann and Mayhew West of Saluda, Betty and Dick Wooley of Landrum, Evelyn Bennett of Walterboro and Maggie Alverson of Union.
Miss Bishop was predeceased by a nephew, Bill Alverson. The family will be at the home, 2698 Santuc-Carlisle Highway. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Lloyd E. Browning
BROOKLYN, N.Y. Lloyd Edward Browning, 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y., husband of Linda Browning, died June 29, 2003. Mr. Browning was born in Union County on May 12, 1943, a son of the late Clara and Ernest Browning. He attended Sims High School in Union and moved to New York City in his late teens. He joined Bethel Church where he found a supportive community.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lashan (Noel) Browning Anderson of New York, four brothers, David Browning of Pennsylvania, John Browning of Michigan, Marvin Browning of New Jersey and James Browning of South Carolina; five sisters, Louise of New Jersey, Ruby of New York, Rena and Mattie of Pennsylvania, and Maggie of New York; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the First AME Zion Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. by the Rev. Dr. James E. McCoy. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery. The House of Hills Funeral Homes, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the Carolina Mortuary of Union.
