WALTERBORO - Carrie Bennett, 89, died on Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Charleston, S.C. The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Greater St. Stephen Church of God in Christ, Elder Jesse King, Jr., Pastor. Burial, directed by MAREE-TRACY FUNERAL HOME, will be in Live Oak cemetery.
HUDSON, Tyler
RUFFIN - William Tyler Hudson, 7, of 10601 Bells Highway, died Wednesday at Colleton Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at First Baptist Church of Walterboro, with Dr. W. Steven Brown and Dr. James W. Hayes officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, directed by the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.
Tyler was born in Charleston County, a son of William A. "Bobo" Hudson and Linda Garrett Hudson. He was a member of Grover United Methodist Church and was attending New Hope Christian School.
Surviving in addition to his parents of Ruffin are a sister, Brooke Hudson of the home, a brother, Tanner Hudson of Walterboro, grandparents, Billy and Orene Hudson of Walterboro, Frances McDonald and her husband Buford, also of Walterboro, and Ed Garrett and his wife Sherrie of Charleston, and great-grandmothers, Lottie Jones of Walterboro and Delcie Maxey of Taylors.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, at the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.
EMOND, Alfred
Lt. Colonel Alfred George "Al" Emond, U.S. Army (Ret.), 87, of Summerville, husband of Johnnie Duke Emond, died Monday evening, July 15, 2002, in a Charleston hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 11 o'clock in James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial with Military Honors will be Friday, August 23, 2002, in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 o'clock, Friday evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World War II Memorial Fund, American Battle Monuments Commission, Attn: GR048, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, D.C. 20090-6074.
Mr. Emond was born on August 18, 1914, in Newton, Mass., a son of the late Joseph Arthur Emond and Cora Bell Abercrombie Emond. He was a graduate of Boston College in Boston, Mass. Lt. Col Emond retired after 27 years of service in the Army Medical Service Corps, having served in World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Later he worked as an Administrator for 10 years at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md. In 1976 he joined his wife, Johnnie at Prudential Carolina Real Estate.
Surviving are, his wife of Summerville; two sons, Alfred G. Emond, Jr., of Honolulu, Hawaii, Glenn Anderson Gardner of Conyers, Ga.; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Emond of Alexandria, Va., Susan Michaud of Mt. Airy, Md.; eight grandchildren, Alfred Emond, III, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Elizabeth Emond of Honolulu, Hawaii, Rachel Michaud of Champaign, Ill., Jennifer Michaud of Boston, Mass., Katherine Michaud of Salisbury, Md., Robert Michaud of Frederick, Md., Ryan Gardner of New Albany, Ind., Joshua Dove of Atlanta, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; sister, Winifred D'Amelio of Duxbury, Mass.; niece and nephew, May and Dennis Boucher and family of Southern Pines, N.C.; numerous other nieces and nephews.

GUPTON, Thomas
Thomas "Pete" B. Gupton, 73, of Charleston, S.C., passed away Sunday, July 7, 2002, in Springdale, Ark. He was born July 8, 1928, in Franklin County, N.C., and the son of George and Mary Belle Coggins Gupton. He was retired and a Baptist. He also served in the United States Armed Forces.
He is survived by two sons, Dale Gupton of Springdale, Ark., Darryl Gupton of Branson, Mo., one daughter, Faye Anne Hunt of Cedar Park, Texas, two brothers Charles Gupton of New Bern, N.C., George Gupton of Charleston, S.C., two sisters, Molly Jordan of Charleston, S.C., Mae Purdy of Greensboro, N.C., and five grandchildren.
The family will hold services at Carolina Memorial Garden in Charleston, S.C., at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2002.

DOYLE, M.D., Frances
GEORGETOWN - Services for Frances Ingell Doyle, M.D., a Georgetown Pediatrician, 77, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 19, 2002, at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Michael G. Cole, the Rev. Paul C. Fuener and the Rev. Scott R. Fleischer. Burial will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Mayer Funeral Home.
Dr. Doyle died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. Born in Little Rock, Ark., she was the daughter of the late George Elmer Doyle and Sarah Hazard Doyle. She was a lifelong resident of Georgetown and a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. She attended Winyah High School, Winthrop College, and the Medical College of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Doyle specialized in Pediatrics at Louisville General Hospital in Kentucky and completed her residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. She opened her practice in Georgetown in 1952 and was the first female doctor and the first pediatrician to join the staff of Georgetown County Memorial Hospital. She practiced until 1988, when she retired.
Dr. Doyle led the effort to eradicate polio with an injectable polio vaccine after 1952, then with oral vaccine after 1964. She was elected to the F. Marion Sims Medical Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She was the recipient of the Academy's Pediatrics Review and Education Program (PREP) Education Award in 1990.
Surviving are double first cousins Jonathan (Johnnie) Doyle Hale of Atlanta, Ga., Sarah Doyle Pusey of Summerville, Ingell Hazard Doyle, Arthur Hazard Doyle and Patrick James Doyle, all of Georgetown.

EELLS, Juliet
Juliet Oakes Eells, widow of John S. Eells, Jr., Professor of English at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., died Wednesday. She was born and raised in Bloomfield, N.J., and was a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College. She was a former member of the Junior League, the Junior Welfare League and Daughters of the American Revolution.
For many years, she volunteered at the Rock Hill Chapter of the American Red Cross and Hospice of York County. She moved to Charleston in 1997 where she was a volunteer at Roper Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter, Marion Coffin Eells of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Guion Oakes Eells of Banner Elk, N.C.; one sister, Jean Wortham Oakes of Locust, N.J.; two granddaughters, one great-grandson, and two granddogs.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Residence Assistance Fund, 1873 Camp Road, Charleston, S.C. 29412, or the John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 3861 Leeds Ave., Charleston, S.C. 29405-7469.
Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery, Richmond, Va. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
GROOMS, Julian
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of July 17, 2002, Julian A. Grooms, husband of Mary Gudzon Grooms. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Julian A. Grooms are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Friday at 10:30 o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel Thursday between six and eight o'clock.
Mr. Grooms was born July 24, 1916 in Charleston, S.C., the son of John Wesley Grooms and Bertha Reid Grooms. He was a retired sub station electrician with South Carolina Electric and Gas Company. He was a member of Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church and a life member of Franklin Lodge #96 A.F.M.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston; one daughter: Judy G. Burn and her husband Wilford Burn of Charleston, S.C.; one son: Robert R. Grooms and his wife Catherine Cleveland Grooms of Spartanburg; 2 grandchildren: Christopher R. Burn and David M. Burn.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 413 Geddes Avenue, Charleston, S.C. 29407 or to a charity of one's choice.

LI, Sijia
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of July 15, 2002, in Duke University Hospital, Sijia Li, daughter of Hui Li and Zhongfeng Wang. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services at the graveside in Riverview Memorial Park, Friday at ten o'clock. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Thursday between five and seven o'clock.
Miss Li was born December 8, 1997 in Hunan, China. She was brought to America for treatment at MUSC under the direction of Dr. Lyndon Key and her social worker, Gale Horinbein. She was a member of James Island Baptist Church and attended Orange Grove Elementary School and Camp Baker at the Jewish Community Center.
She is survived by her Parents of Charleston, S.C.; one Sister: Qian Li of Charleston, S.C.; American Grandparents: Sunny and Samuel Steinberg of Charleston, S.C.; American Great-Grandmother: Mildred Deich of Charleston, S.C.; Uncle John Pittman and Aunt YiLing Pittman and Family of Charleston, S.C.; Brothers and Sisters from The Charleston Chinese Christian Fellowship; Friends of the Charleston Rotary Auxiliary; and many friends from the Charleston Community; Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins in China.
