AVINGER, John
TUCKER, GA - John Oliver Avinger, 30, of Tucker, GA, and formerly of Holly Hill, SC died Monday at his residence.
The funeral will be 11 AM Thursday, July 18, 2002 in Corinth Baptist Church near Holly Hill with Rev. Buddy Locke officiating. Burial will follow in the Avinger Family cemetery, SC Highway 6, Santee. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 AM.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Rickenbacker, Robert Rickenbacker, Jay Jeffcoat, Lamar Day, Wally Grooms, Michael Davis, and Wayne Infinger.
A native of Holly Hill, SC he was the son of Ernest W. "Buddy" Avinger and Doris June Rickenbacker Avinger. He was a 1990 graduate of Holly Hill Academy, and attended the College of Charleston and Clayton Community College. He was employed in hotel management. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents of Holly Hill; sister and brother-in-law, June and Troy Brownlee of St. George; brother and sister-in-law, Ward and Alice Avinger of Holly Hill; four nephews, Stokes and Lance Brownlee of St. George, and Trey and Hanks Avinger of Holly Hill.
Friends may call at AVINGER FUNERAL HOME OF HOLLY HILL from 5 -7 PM this Wednesday July 17, 2002 and other times at the Avinger home 8113 Old State Road, Holly Hill.

Cherish Alexandra "Alex" Porter, 14, of Summerville, S.C., died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at a local hospital. Alex was born on March 2, 1988 in Charleston, S.C., a daughter of John Allen Porter and Sharon McBurnett. She was a student at Dubose Middle School.

Emily Phillips, wife, mother and political personality. Eleven years after the battle began it has ended, not in defeat, but in surrender. Emily C. Phillips, 70, died July 14, 2002, in Lexington Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Harold Thompson Canaday of the late Harold Thompson Canaday and Lena Croft Canaday Hayden. Emily is survived by her husband of 49yeras, E.D. Phillips; her children, Becky Phillips, Deedie Belangia (Conway), Jackie Finch (Ray), Hal Phillips, Steve Phillips (Michelle), seven grandchildren, sister Betty Dunaway, brothers Joe (Sonny) Canaday, Edward Hayden, David Hayden, a number of nieces and nephews and many special friends.
Emily, a two-time Order of the Palmetto honoree, was active in the Republican Party politics for over 40 years. She was Second Congressional District Chairman of the Republican Party for over 10 years and an honorary life-time Chairman. She was on the South Carolina Ethics Commission for five years. Mrs. Phillips was the wife of E.D. Phillips of Phillips Plants and Phillips Farmers Garden.

SHUMAN, JR., Joseph
ATHENS, GA. - Joseph William Shuman, Jr., 55, of 195 Sycamore Drive, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002.
A native of St. George, S.C., Mr. Shuman was the son of Ruth W. Shuman of Hanahan, S.C., and the late Joseph William Shuman, Sr. He was a graduate of St. George High School and the University of Georgia with a degree in Business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserves. Mr. Shuman owned and operated 5 Points Shell and Wrecker Service for 24 years. He enjoyed traveling, farming, fishing and hunting. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother include his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Trena Shuman of Bishop, Steven and Mary Ann Shuman of Statham, and Matthew T. Shuman of Athens; sisters, Lyn S. Ryan of Charlottesville, Va., Faye S. Turner of Hanahan, S.C.; grandchildren, Brett, Hunter, and Victoria Shuman; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday, July 11, 2002, at 3 p.m., at Green Acres Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
