COWART, Florence
KINGSTREE - Florence Marshall Cowart, 89, widow of Cecil Cowart, died Friday in a Sumter hospital.
Mrs. Cowart was born in Sumter County, a daughter of Carrie Weatherly Marshall and James Walter Marshall, Sr. She attended Sumter County schools and was a retired bookkeeper for Williamsburg County Auditor. Mrs. Cowart was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had been a resident at Covenant Place for three months. She was first married
to the late J.O. (Pat) Fowler.
Survivors include, one step-daughter, Cecelia C. Verner of Lake Wales, Fla.; one sister, Carrie Mae Perry of Kingstree; five nieces, Virginia Anne (Clarence) McIntosh of Kingstree, Estelle (William) Auld of Columbia, Karen (Peter) Maurice of Irmo, Mary Lib (Hugh) Parker of North Carolina, and Mary (Roger) Brewer of Moncks Corner; two nephews, Glenn Marshall and Mack (Marcie) Marshall of Columbia; good friends, Pearl Dew and Mary Freeman of Kingstree.
Mrs. Cowart was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Kingstree United Methodist Church, with burial in Williamsburg cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday afternoon, at the church.
The family suggests memorials to Kingstree United Methodist Church.
PRINCE, SR., James
James Edward Prince, Sr., of Cope, S.C., husband of Annette Hodge Prince, died at his home, Saturday, July 13, 2002.
Mr. Prince was born in Orangeburg, July 9, 1944, the son of the late Gene Prince and the late Rebecca Grubbs Prince. Mr. Prince was a Mormon and was a retired heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Calvery Church in Barnwell County. Officiating will be James Hiers and Herbert Michaels.
Survivors include, his wife; two sons, James Edward, Jr., of Spartanburg, S.C., Lonnie James Prince of Orange Park, Fla.; two stepsons, Ronald Dale Still of Hilda, S.C., Calvin Reeves Still of Williston, S.C.; three half-brothers, Lewis Hiers, John Hiers, Lee Allen Hiers, all of Aiken, S.C.; one sister, Harriett Prince Bishop of Traves, Fla.; three half-sisters, Dorothy Hiers of Aiken, S.C., Jedale Hiers Woods of Aiken, S.C., Peggy Hiers Youngblood of Grove Town, Ga.; 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, July 15, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at COONER FUNERAL HOME OF BAMBERG. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Orangeburg.

Dr. Charles Herbert Zemp, Jr., 75, a retired Pediatrician, died Friday at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church, conducted by Rev. Bert H. Hatch. Interment will be in the church cemetery, directed by THE FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Dr. Zemp was born June 11, 1927 in Charlotte, N.C., a son of the late Charles Herbert Zemp and Elizabeth Workman Zemp. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta and the Medical University of S.C., class of 1949. His Pediatric residency and rotating Internship was served at Roper Hospital. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Medical Officer on the Carrier Philippine Sea.
Surviving are: his wife, Lynda Mowrey Zemp, six sons, Charles H. Zemp, IV of Green Pond, Douglas B. Zemp of Edisto Island, R. J. Stevens, III of Hudson, NC, David F. Stevens and Bryan Creger both of Lenoir, NC and Robert Creger of Richmond, VA, four daughters, Virginia Z. Fisher of Lawrence, KS, Elizabeth Z. Everard and Shannon Zemp both of Ocala, FL and Pamela S. Whitley of Oakboro, NC, a brother, Francis Lachicotte Zemp of Camden and eleven grandchildren.

Amelia Wallace Patat, 88, of Charleston, widow of Leon Philip Patat, Jr. died Friday, July 12, 2002 in a local hospital. Mrs. Patat was born Tuesday, January 6, 1914 in Laurens, S.C., a daughter of the late Martin Gary and Amelia Laurens Bolt Wallace. She graduated from Laurens High School and the Roper School of Nursing. Mrs. Patat worked for Dr. Rhame in private practice and at Roper Hospital. She was a member of The Ladies Benevolent Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the St. Andrew's Book Club, the Methodist Women's Circle, a lifetime member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, an avid gardener and was devoted to her family and friends. Mrs. Patat is survived by three daughters: Nancy P. Shannon and her husband William of Gastonia, N.C., Amelia P. Cathcart and her husband Robert of Charleston, and Lucia P. Young and her husband Michael of Mt. Desert Island, Maine; a son, Leon P. Patat, III and his wife Mary of Charleston; a sister, Nancy W. Weathers of Marietta, S.C.; two brothers, Martin G. Wallace of Greer, S.C. and Samuel R. Wallace of Laurens, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The relatives and friends of Amelia W. DESAUSSURE, Edward
Major General Edward Harleston deSaussure, Jr., died on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at home in Ponte Vedra, Fla. He was born in 1918 in El Paso, Texas, where his father, a Calvary Officer, was stationed. Following his retirement from the Army, General and Mrs. deSaussure lived for 25 years in Flat Rock, N.C., before moving to Ponte Vedra five years ago. He graduated form the United States Military Academy in 1941. He received a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from John Hopkins University in 1949. Among other assignments, he served in the South Pacific during W.W. II, Korea: 1960-61, and Vietnam: 1966-67. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Joint Services Commendation, Distinguished Service Medal and other service medals. General deSaussure was and avid golfer and woodworker, former polo player and poker enthusiast. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Huger of Charleston, S.C.; son, Edward H. deSaussure, III of Mooresville, N.C.; daughters, Frances deSaussure Meade of Burke, Va., Eleanor deSaussure Bryan of Jacksonville, Anita DeSaussure Tomm of Atlantic Beach, Margaret Laurens deSaussure of Ponte Vedra; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Dr. Charlton deSaussure of Charleston, S.C.
