James Booker
Union resident

James Booker of 101 Hart St., died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at the home. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Marie Bishop
Former teacher

Marie Bishop, 96, of 2698 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, died Wednesday July 16, 2003, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Miss Bishop was born in Rose Hill on July 2, 1907, a daughter of the late Walter and Bessie Bishop She was an active member of the Salem Baptist Church where she served as organist and pianist for over 30 years.

Miss Bishop graduated from Warren Wilson College, formerly known as Asheville Normal School. She taught first grade for 40 years. She began her teaching career in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and retired from the Union County Schools. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, Walter and Elsie Alverson of Union; Walter and Dianne Bishop of California, Nancy and Morris Harper of Houston, Texas, William and Leona Bishop of Aiken; Mary Ann and Mayhew West of Saluda, Betty and Dick Wooley of Landrum, Evelyn Bennett of Walterboro and Maggie Alverson of Union. Miss Bishop was predeceased by a nephew, Bill Alverson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Lesley and the Rev. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in the Padgetts Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William Russell Bishop, Dick Wooley, William Alverson, David Turner Sr., Billy Dixon and Robin Arnold.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 2:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort Eddie Medlock, James Brown, Greg Walker, Fred Colson, Malcomb Gregory, Charlie Robinson, Perry Enlow, Jerry Gregory, Erby Mabry, Betty Farr, Mary Dixon, Christine Gregory, Margaret Jeter, Ruth Jeter, Cleora Hurst, Elanor Hawkins, June Smith, Jane Austin and Deacons of Salem Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Salem Baptist Church Friday from 1 until 2:15 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday. The family will be at the home, 2698 Santuc-Carlisle Highway. Memorials may be made to the Salem Baptist Church Organ Fund, 1835 Tinker Creek Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Sgt. Marcus Briggs
Union native Marine

Sgt. Marcus Briggs, 29, husband of Carla Johnson Briggs, formerly of Port Richmond, Staten Island, N.Y., a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, died Saturday in National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. Sgt. Briggs was born in Union, the son of Mariah Rice Briggs and the late Arthur Briggs. He moved with his family to Port Richmond when he was 5 years old. He graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1992, and left Staten Island to join the Marines in 1993.

Sgt. Briggs served in the Marine Corps for eight years, receiving numerous honors. With the Marines he traveled the world, including stops in Australia, Japan, Hawaii, California and North Carolina. His motto was to not just give 100 percent, but give 110 percent, his mother said. He always gave straight from his heart to charity, family, friends and the homeless, said his wife of five years, the former Carla Johnson. He taught us how to be humble. Mark gladly opened his heart and shared our home with his loving niece.

Sgt. Briggs was captain of the Red Raiders football team at Port Richmond High School. Friends also remembered him as a big basketball fan. He was a member of First Central Baptist Church, Stapleton, where his uncle, the Rev. Dr. Calvin Rice is pastor.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sisters, Daphney and Latoya Briggs; his maternal grandmother, Asilee Rice; a niece, Ashley Briggs; a nephew, Brandon Briggs, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church in the Buffalo Community by the Rev. Dr. Calvin Rice. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family will receive friends at Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church. The family is at the home of his grandmother, Asilee Rice, 988 John Hart Road, Buffalo. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Sarah G. Brown
Union native

Sarah Gregory Brown, 83, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, 1817 Jonesville Highway, widow of James Wesley Brown Sr., died Friday, July 18, 2003, at a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Brown was born in Union on April 3, 1919, a daughter of the late Lewis and Mae Cudd Gregory. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and the Bertha Gregory Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James W. Brown Jr. and Candy Brown of Union and James Garner Brown of Spartanburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Hazel and Dudley Adams of Union, Rosa and Ed Jackson of Tryon, N.C., Aileen and Billy Gossett of Jonesville; Diane McMahan and Kathy McMahan, reared in the home; two brothers, Harold Gene Gregory and Robert (Bob) Gregory, both of Gaffney; three sisters, Bessie McCullough and Gladys Wood, both of Gaffney and Annie Inman of Union; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brown was predeceased by two daughters, a son and a grandson, Brenda Cool, Elizabeth Brown, Donald Dean Brown and Charles Cool. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. David Toney and the Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Cool, Landon Williams, Roy Adams, Foy Estes, James Adams, Jim Woods Jr., James Turner and Johnnie Hines. The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: members of the Bertha Gregory Sunday School Class, W.M.U. members of Hebron Baptist Church; Dr. Vivian Clark, Susan Alam, W.E. Hyder, Robert Pridemore and Jim Woods Sr.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church Sound System Fund, Hebron Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Adams, 1017 Sardis Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jeanene G. Crocker

Emily Jeanene Garner Crocker, 61, of 1085 Brown's Creek Road, widow of D.L. Crocker, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at 1:53 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mrs. Crocker was born in Union on Oct. 28, 1941, a daughter of the late Buyon and Ruth Vaughan Garner. She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mrs. Crocker was formerly employed with Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant; Sonoco Products and Jordan's Hot Spot in Lockhart.

Surviving are two daughters, Utedia Queen Emery of Campobello and Peggy Sue Henchen of New York; a son, James Reese Plemmons of Union; a sister, Peggy E. Fuller of Birdsville, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Jesse Fleming, Jacob Fleming and Josh Henchen; six step-grandchildren, Misty Queen, Sherry James, Brian Queen, Kacie Inabinett, Chris Smith, and Lee Crocker; a great-granddaughter, Hailey Rhinehardt; a step-son, David Crocker of Spartanburg; four step-great-grandchildren, Abagaile Lawson, Charnar Inabinett, Haven Clark, Kyleigh Clark; two special aunts, Lucille Garner and Amogene Vaughan. Mrs. Crocker was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers, Diane Garner, Eva Kingdom, Mary Sue Garner, Charles Garner, Sammy Garner and David Garner; and a step-son, Lee Crocker.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale, the Rev. Tim Huckaby, the Rev. Randy Smith and the Rev. Brandon Bailey. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Keith Queen, Dan Hayden, Ernie Kendrick, Charles Alexander, Hoss Martin and Walter Garner.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of Philippi Church, Neighbors on Brown's Creek Church Road, members of Lockhart First Baptist Church; members of Christian Fellowship Church, members of Mt. Joy Baptist Church, ICE Unit employees; first and third floor South and North Nurses of Wallace Thomson Hospital and Walker Davis.

James Booker
Textile worker

James Booker, 62, of 101 Hart St., died Monday, July 14, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Booker was born in Carlisle on Feb. 10, 1941, a son of the late Mack Hill and Karene Booker Pratt. He was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church and was a textile worker with J.P. Stevens Co Mr. Booker was a 1962 graduate of Sims High School and was a member of Mason Bright Star #222.

Surviving are his stepfather, John Pratt of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Emanuel (Betty) Booker Sr. of Union and Larry Pratt of High Point, N.C.; six sisters, Ella Mae English of Carlisle, Jessie Lee Foster and Betty Jean (Alvin) Nelson of Detroit, Mich., Annie Bell Pratt of Winston Salem, N.C., Lilie Rene Pratt of High Point, N.C. and Brenda Scurry of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at James Chapel Baptist Church in Carlisle by the Rev. Fred Murray, pastor; and the Rev. Johnny Edwards. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mason Bright Star #222. Members of the 1962 Sims High School class will serve as the honorary escort.

Viewing will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The family is at the home, 101 Hart St. in Union. The body will be placed in the church Monday at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
