RUSSELL, Paul
Paul F. Russell, 86, of North Charleston, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at a Charleston hospital.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 6, 2002, 11 AM at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 7113 Rivers Avenue.
Mr. Russell was born in Hathaway, Tenn on May 30, 1916. He was the son of the late Luke and Alice Russell. Mr. Russell, a decorated World War II veteran, he served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a Plank Holder of the USS North Carolina. He retired as a Master Chief Gunners Mate in December 1966. Mr. Russell later worked at the First Citizen Bank of Charleston and retired December 1, 1989. He was a member at large with the Fleet Reserve Association in Washington, D.C. He is the widower of Jessie White Russell.
Survivors are three daughters, Jane Bass of Lake Sinclair, GA., Beverly Snowden Oliver of Anderson, S.C., Sheila R. Disher Soffera of Mt. Pleasant, two step-sons, Jonah Miller of Huger, S.C., and Paul R. Miller, of Clinton, S.C., eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Jimmy Lee Pappas, 69, of Charleston, S.C. died February 24, 2002. Born August 10, 1932 in Ashville, N.C., the son of Lennie Davis and Arthur Demitrius Pappas, Jimmy Lee served his country with an outstanding career, including four tours in Vietnam, as a Marine Corps fighter pilot. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in Lewis Memorial Park, 415 Beaver Dam Road, Ashville, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MALDONADO, Pedro
Pedro Maldonado 75, of Goose Creek, died July 2, 2002, in a local hospital. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m., Friday July 5, 2002, at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 7113 RIVERS AVENUE, NORTH CHARLESTON. Burial will occur at a later date in Cemeterio Municipal Nuevo, Luquillo, Puerto Rico. Born February 18, 1927, in Luguillo, Puerto Rico. The son of the late Julio Maldonado and Maria Rosa. Mr. Maldonado was a retired Farmer and Police Officer. He was a member of the Hispanic Baptist Church, of Goose Creek Mr. Maldonado was an army Veteran of WWII.
Survivors include; three daughters; Nelly Maldonado Cruz, of Farjardo, Puerto Rico, Edith Maldonado Cruz, of Farjardo, Puerto Rico and Consuelo "Connie" Batarao, of Goose Creek one son; Raymond G. Batarao, of Goose Creek. Two sisters; Andrea Maldonado, of Luquillo, Puerto Rico and Lolita Maldonado, of Luquillo, Puerto Rico one brother; Geronimo Maldonado, of Farardo, Puerto Rico.

MCDOWELL, Martha
Martha Jane Fullwood McDowell, age 71 died Monday, July 1, 2002 in Myrtle Beach.
Born November 5, 1930 in the Burgess Community, she was the daughter of the late Alfonzo and Zellie Agnes Jollie Fullwood. Mrs. McDowell opened Wee Care Day School in 1962 and a member of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lloyd McDowell and a son, Douglas Lloyd McDowell.
Surviving are daughters, Sue Brunson and husband Steve, Helen Richardson and husband Eddie all of Myrtle Beach and Phyllis Clemons and husband Bob of Abbyville; brothers, Charles Irwin Fullwood of Myrtle Beach and Alfred Fullwood of San Antonia, Tx.; sister, Daisy F. Scott of Ft. Myers, FL and grandchildren, William Richardson and wife Tonya, Lori Clemons, Rob Clemons, Martha Elizabeth Brunson, Lewis Brunson and Christopher Brunson.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, MURRELLS INLET. Burial will follow in Ocean Woodscemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00, Wednesday at the funeral home.

REID, Juanita
Juanita Inez Pinckney Reid was born on March 9, 1929 to John Henry and Inez Fraser Pinckney in Sanford, North Carolina. She died on June 30, 2002 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the second of three children. Her older brother, John Jr., preceded her in death. Her younger sister, Ellen Pinckney Cornish, resides in Huntersville, North Carolina. At an early age, Juanita moved with her family to Charleston, South Carolina where she received her early education. She graduated from Avery Institute as Valedictorian. She was a member and active participant of Central Baptist Church, and she was involved in several social and civic organizations.
Juanita started her higher education at Hampton Institute, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1950 with a BS degree in Mathematics and English. During her stay at Hampton, she was an exchange student at Oberlin College in Ohio and a member of the Terpaichorean Dance Group. She receiver her MS degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and did further study at Atlanta University and North Carolina State in Raleigh.
She began her teaching career in Danville, Virginia and in 1954 transferred to Charlotte. She started worked at York Road High School, moved to Irwin Road Junior High School and completed her career at Garinger Senior High School as a guidance counselor. She retired after 35 years of distinguished service.
Juanita joined First Baptist Church shortly after moving to Charlotte. She was a staunch and faithful member and made many contributions to the church and community through her work on the Board of Christian Education. She was very active in the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the National Epicurean Association- Charlotte Chapter and several local civic and social organizations.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years. Dewitt Reid; a step-daughter, Janice Reid Simpson (Hubert); a step-grandson, Jason Bernard Jones; a sister, Ellen Pinckney Cornish (Alba) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. KELLY, Janie
Mrs. Janie Abraham Kelly, 87, of 181 Lockwood Drive, Bowman S.C. died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at her home after an extended illness. She was the wife of Henry Clay Kelly Sr. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the St. Stephens United Methodist Church, two Churches Road, Bowman S.C. with Pastor Thomas L. Marks and Rev. Odell Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the St. Stephens cemetery directed by LING FUNERAL HOME OF ST. GEORGE. Mrs. Kelly was born December 25, 1914 in Orangeburg County a daughter of the late Kim Kelly and Mrs. Rebecca Hilliard Kelly. She attended the public schools of Orangeburg County and was a life-long member of the St. Stephens United Methodist Church where she served for many years on the church choir and as a class leader. She was joined in Holy Matrimony with Henry Clay Kelly, Sr. on December 31, 1936.
Surviving are her husband for more then 65 years, Henry Clay Kelly, Sr. of Bowman, S.C. one son, Willie C. Kelly of Bowman, S.C., one daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Kelly (Bernard) Cummings of Jersey City, N. J., one sister, Mrs. Mary Goodwin of Bowman, S.C. one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Kelly of Bowman. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
