Rev. John D. Meador Jr.
Union native

The Rev. John D. Meador Jr., 45, husband of Kathy Morris Meador of 261 Riva Ridge Road, Spartanburg, died at his residence Friday, July 18, at 205 p.m. after several years of declining health. Rev. Meador was born in Union on Sept. 18, 1957, a son of John D. Meador Sr. of Union and the late Helen Manley Meador.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. He was a graduate of the Southeastern Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity Degree. He was a former minister of Canaan Baptist Church of Spartanburg and also associate pastor of College Park Baptist Church in Rock Hill.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are a daughter, Allison Lea Meador of the home; a son and daughter in law, Brian C. and Ashley G. Selepes of Spartanburg; a grandson, Noah F. Selepes of Spartanburg; and four sisters, Brenda Jolly of Union, Hope Deans of Mt. Pleasant, Emily Jolly of Rock Hill and Marjory Meador of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg conducted by the Rev. Sal Barone and the Rev. T. Dale Lynch. Burial will be the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Union. Active pallbearers were David Wise, Mike Jolly, Ricky Morris, Jerry Davis, James Dunn and Richard Meador.

The following were asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Randy Jenkins, Roger Gregory, Jon Catow, Bruce Morris, Bob Welborn, Billy Abee and Bill Adams. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and was placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 261 Riva Ridge Road, Spartanburg. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 East Main St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29301 or to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Blvd., Spartanburg, S.C. 29303. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Irene R. Sumner
Retired from Carlisle Finishing

MONTROSS, Va. Irene Riddle Sumner, 75, widow of John E. Sumner, formerly of Santuc, died Saturday, July 19, 2003 in Montross, Va. Mrs. Sumner was born in Woodruff on June 24, 1928, a daughter of the late Herbert and Josie Riddle. She was retired from Cone Mills, Carlisle Plant, and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sumner is survived by two daughters, Linda Cheryl Miller and her husband of Montross, Va., Elizabeth Joann Sumner of Columbia; a son, John Michael Sumner and his wife Donna C. of Union; four grandchildren, Bradley R. Laxton of Columbus, Ohio, Catherine E. Gregory, G. Brooke Sumner and Merritt L. Sumner, all of Columbia; a great-granddaughter, Savannah R. Laxton of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Martha Wood and Bobbie Morgan, both of Woodruff; two brothers, Ronnie Riddle of Simpsonville and Jack Riddle of Greenville.

Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by two brothers, Billy Riddle and Jerry Riddle. Memorial services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2 until 3 at the chapel. Entombment will follow at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

After Wednesday the family will be at the home of her son, John Michael Sumner, 104 Bridle Trail Lane, Union, S.C., 29379. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Salem Baptist Church, 1835 Tinker Creek Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Leroy Bishop
Union County native

Leroy Bishop, 76, son of the late Charlie Sr., and Willie Mae Beacham, died July 19, 2003 at Beverly Heathcare Nursing Home in Meansville, Pa. Surviving are five sisters, Peggy Beacham and Mattie L. Beacham of Union, Sandra (Ralph) Tucker of Carlisle, Freddie M. Borah of Bellrose Terrace, N.Y. and Sarah Ann Beacham of Manhasset, N.Y.; three brothers, Charles Beacham of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ray (Sallie) Beacham and Amos (Lisa) Beacham of Union; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Doris Bishop of Union; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at McBeth Baptist Church by the Rev., T.D. Mauney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be until 7 p.m. today and on Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

John B. Greer
Korean War veteran

John Bevis Greer, 73, of 136 North Church St., died at his residence at an early hour Tuesday, July 22, 2003, after a sudden illness. Mr. Greer was born in Union on Sept. 27, 1929, a son of Leora Bevis Greer of Union and the late John Monroe Greer. He was a Baptist and a member of Rutledge Masonic Lodge. Mr. Greer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Korean Conflict and was retired field service representative with the National Cash Register Co.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a son, John Monroe Greer II of Inman; two sisters, Sally G. Hart of Jonesville and Marjorie G. Marcello of Pauline; and three grandchildren. Mr. Greer was predeceased by a brother, Franklin Delano Greer. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Gerald Eaves.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside services. The family is at the home of his sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Hart, 461 Lee Road, West Springs Community, Jonesville. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Memorial services for Irene R. Sumner, who died July 19, 2003, in Montross, Va., will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Tammy H. McGowan
Jonesville Cafe employee

JONESVILLE Tammy Horne McGowan, 43, of 917 Spartanburg Highway, Jonesville, wife of Mike McGowan, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at 6 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. McGowan was born in Union on Jan. 27, 1960, a daughter of Gayle Addis Horne of Jonesville and the late Robert L. Horne. She was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church. Mrs. McGowan attended Jonesville High School and was employed with The Cafe in Jonesville.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two sons, Jay Haney of Jonesville and Matt Cunningham of Jonesville; a step-daughter, Amanda McGowan of Clinton, two brothers, Chris Horne of Kathleen, Ga., and Craig Horne of Jonesville and a grandson, Jacob Haney of Wellford.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Joseph Stover. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Chris Horne, Craig Horne, Hank Millwood, Todd Millwood, James Howell and Richard Spencer.

The family will receive friends at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel tonight from 7 until 9. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her mother, Gayle A. Horne, 917 Spartanburg Highway, Jonesville. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

(Jute) Wade O'Shields
Retired from Social Services

Julia (Jute) Wade O'Shields, 87, of 509 Thompson Blvd., Union, widow of Otis Lee O'Shields, died at her residence Monday, July 21, 2003, after an unexpected illness. Mrs. O'Shields was born in Chester County on March 8, 1916, a daughter of the late Frank Terrell Wade and Janie Shirley Wade.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Mary Garner Sunday School Class and a member of Martha Chapter #79, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. O'Shields attended Union High School and was a retired social worker with the Union County Department of Social Services.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, D. Brent O'Shields and Mary of Greer; a sister, Verlie Wade Hodge of Union; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Boyce W. Wade and special friend Gail Cobb, C. Darrell and Margaret Wade, Tom and Gaynelle Wade, Jackie T. and Mary Wade and William M. Wade, all of Union; a grandson, Mark Allen O'Shields and Trinity O'Shields of Florida; other grandchildren, Lynn and Jody Oliver, Kevin and Kyle, Rick and Jan Parker, Leslie and Chase; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Linda Wade, Ruth and Roy Quinn of Union and Doris Wade of Chester.

Mrs. O'Shields was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers, Ruth Wade Leonhardt, Lucille Wade, Grace Wade Baldwin, Frank Wade Jr., Olin D. Wade, Cecil L. Wade and Donald Wade. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long and the Rev. Bobby Crocker. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Roger D. Wade, Terry Wade, David Wade, Lynn Wade, Joe Wade and Robert Hicks. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Tim Wade, Mark Wade, Ronnie Wade, Ken Baldwin, Bob Quinn, Marion Fant, George Faucett, Maxie Murphy, Linda and Hugh Tucker, Sam White and members of the Mary Garner Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends at Tabernacle Baptist Church Wednesday night from 7 until 9. The body will be placed in the church Thursday at 2 pm. to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 509 Thompson Blvd., Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Relay for Life, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Glenn Bryan Harris
World War II veteran

GAFFNEY Glenn Bryan Harris, 86, husband of Nita Becknell Harris, of 616 Cowdyesville Road, Gaffney, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Mr. Harris was born in Gaffney, a son of the late Marion B. Harris and Essie Mae Proctor Harris.

He was retired from Community Cash Store in Blacksburg where he was manager for over 20 years. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church where he was minister of music for 34 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Terry Harris of Gaffney and Kenny Harris of Union; a daughter, Nita Elaine Harris of Greenville; grandchildren, Greg Harris, Jennifer Robbins and Stephen; two sisters, Daisy Bridges of Gaffney and Ruby Roberts of Livingston, Calif.; and a brother, Ralph Harris of Gaffney.

Mr. Harris was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Harris. Visitation will be from 7 until 9 tonight at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Rehobeth Baptist Church by the Rev. John Goforth and the Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The family is at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Rehobeth Baptist Church, 110 Rehobeth Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29349. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
