SIMMONS, Fred
FLORENCE- Dr. Fred N. Simmons died on Thursday, June 27, 2002 after an illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1941 to George and Leila Simmons, both deceased, in McComb, MS, where he spent his childhood. Dr. Simmons attended Jackson State College and Meharry Medical College. He spent a at a number of years practicing dentistry in Spartanburg before settling in Florence where he worked for Sexton Dental Clinic.
Dr. Simmons was an active member of many organizations which included Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Meharry Medical School Alumni Board, State Secretary of SC Chapter of Meharry Medical College Alumni association, National Dental Association, American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Association, Palmetto Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association, Pee Dee District Dental Association, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and a life member of the NAACP. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as president of the Men's Club.
Dr. Simmons leaves his wife, Kathleen Simmons of the home; a brother, George Simmons of Chicago, IL; a daughter, Michelle Simmons of Miami, FL; two sons, Fred Simmons, Jr., of San Francisco, CA, and Harvey Simmons of Nashville, TN; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30th at Trinity Baptist Church. Directed by SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, INC. Burial will be Tuesday in McComb, MS. Omega Service and visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at SMITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL.

St. George, S.C. - Catherine Deitrick (Miss Kitty) Johnston, 88, of 405 Johnston St., St. George died Thursday, June 27, 2002 in the Spartanburg Regional Hospital. The funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at the St. George United Methodist Church with Rev. Wash Belangia and Rev. Edward Davidson officiating. Johnston, David Jennings, and Howard Cooper Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was born July 17, 1913 in Essex County, VA the daughter of the late Harry Vincent Deitrick and Nancy Rice Deitrick. She was a graduate of William & Mary College in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Johnston was active in various clubs and civic organizations and was a member of St. George United Methodist Church for 66 years. Mrs. Johnston, the widow of Dr. Aquilla Richard Johnston is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, A. Richard Johnston, Jr. and Carol B. Johnston of Columbia, Dr. John B. Johnston and Tracy R. Johnston of Walterboro, Harry L. Johnston and Mary B. Johnston and Kirkland S. Johnston and Lydia B. Johnston all of Spartanburg, a twin brother John G. SCRANTON - Anna E. Hanford, 83, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Carolina's Hospital System after an illness.
Ms. Hanford was born in Florence County and the wife of the late Robert F. "Bob" Hanford, and a daughter of Marion "Bub" and Ida Jane Cantey Evans. She was a homemaker and a member of Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pamplico, S.C.
Survivors include her two sons, RJ and Legrand Hanford, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one granddaughter, Amanda Hanford of Lories, S.C.; one grandson, Daniel Hanford of Surfside, S.C.; two sisters, Lorraine Stone of Pamplico, S.C. and Vera (Edwin) Bunte of LaVernia, Texas; and four brothers, JaHue Evans of Florence, Marion Evans of Cades, JD Barr of Sumter and Franklin (Nancy) Barr of Quinby, S.C.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, with burial in the Cook cemetery.

She was a retired Industrial Nurse with International Business Machines and a 50 year member of The First Presbyterian Church, Wappinger Falls, NY.
She is survived by a daughter: Martha Andrews Croft of Charleston, SC; 3 grandchildren: David Charles Handa and Amy Adela Franklin, both of Raleigh, NC, and Laura Elise Mayers of Atlanta, GA; 4 great grandchildren: Nicholas Handa, Jacob Handa, Connor Franklin, Lila Mayers; and several nieces and nephews. 11 brothers and sisters predeceased her.
