CHURCH, Sr., Melvin
Melvin Kibben Church, age 74, of Niceville, Fl, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., died June 18, 2002 at home with family at his side.
Melvin was born in Altavista, Va on April 1, 1928. Melvin was a Navy veteran serving during WWII and Korea. He retired from the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, S.C. in 1982. Melvin worked for the Charleston County School Board and Bi Lo grocery store before retiring to Florida in 1996.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary R. Church, Niceville, Fl, daughters, Colleen Fowler of Niceville, Fl, Susan Vroman of Crestview, Fl., Melva Dalti of N. Smithfield, RI., son, Melvin K. Church, Jr., Niceville, Fl., sisters, Lynn Fick of MI, and Toni Schmock of MI, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Arrangements handled by TRAHAN MORTUARY.

KING, Mary
Mary Lelia King, 74, wife of Cmdr. Robert A. King, USN (RET), died at her residence in Charleston on Tuesday, June 25, 2002. Mrs. King was born Sunday, June 29, 1928 in Tampa, FL, the daughter of James L. and Mary Kate Calhoun King. She attended high school in Tampa, FL and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. King was raised in Columbia, SC by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Rose. She lived in numerous locations around the world and she and her husband settled in Charleston in 1967. Mrs. King was the former Assistant Society Editor for The State Paper, and formerly with the Public Relations Department of the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, VA. She was a member and former President of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, The Junior League of Charleston, and the Carolina Assembly.
The relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. this Friday, at St. Philips Episcopal Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of Charleston are three daughters: Catherine K. Dix and her husband Timothy of Greensboro, NC, Callie K. Smith and her husband Walter of Charleston, and Heyward King of Atlanta, GA; one son, R. Andrew King, Jr. and his wife Amy of Awendaw, SC; one sister, Dorothy K. Marago of Los Altos, CA; five grandchildren: Peter Gaillard Smith, Anna Heyward Smith, Christian King Dix, Robert Sherwood Dix, and Robert Andrew King, III.

ROSEFIELD, Virginia
Virginia Moise Rosefield, 93, a longtime resident of Sumter, and more recently of Charleston, died June 26, 2002.
Mrs. Rosefield was born on January 5, 1909, in Sumter, S.C., the daughter of the late Davis DeLeon Moise and Anita Harby Moise. In 1934, she married
the late Herbert Aaron Rosefield; they lived in Sumter from then on except for four years in New York City. Since 2000, she lived in Charleston.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Rosefield immersed herself in all facets of community life in Sumter. She was one of the organizers and later president of the Sumter County Education Coordinating Council. In 1946, she helped organize Sumter's first Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and established and operated the Clothes Chest to provide clothes for schoolchildren in need of adequate clothing. She organized the first Girl Scout troops in Sumter and worked in the first program in South Carolina for blind children in public schools. A graduate of Converse College, she taught elementary school at Alice Drive Elementary School for many years.
Mrs. Rosefield was one of the organizers and founders of the Sumter Little Theatre, serving as its president and a member of the board of directors and performing in theatrical productions for 40 years. She was an accomplished dancer and established the first dance school in Sumter. She was a founding committee member of the Fine Arts Council and served on its Board of Directors. She read newspapers on the radio for the blind and visually impaired, and was a board member of the Friends of the Library. Other activities included serving on the board of Sumter's Home Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and on the national board of the Women of Reform Judaism. She and her late husband were devoted to Temple Sinai, where she served as religious school teacher and superintendent, member of the board of directors, president, librarian, archives co-chair, and 7 terms as Sisterhood president. Through the Temple Sisterhood, she also created and managed a program to donate 25 children's books each month to the children treated at the Tuomey Hospital Clinic. She also served as a weekly one-on-one tutor in the District 17 Adult Literacy Program.
In 1997, she and her late husband were individually recognized for their many years of dedicated volunteerism when they were awarded The Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor given to a citizen of South Carolina. She also received many other awards for her civic and regional contributions.
In 1998, Mrs. Rosefield and her husband once again reached out to Sumter by establishing The Herbert and Virginia Moise Rosefield Scholarship Fund at Central Carolina Technical Community College. The scholarships are designated specifically for deserving students in the health care field.
Mrs. Rosefield was predeceased by her husband and two brothers, Marion Moise and Dr. Davis DeLeon Moise.
She is survived by her daughter Anita Moise Rosefield Rosenberg and husband Ira Rosenberg, of Charleston; her son Herbert Aaron Rosefield, Jr. and wife Donna Rosefield of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren David Moise Rosenberg and wife Marcelle, Virginia Moise Rosenberg, Mindelle Rosenberg Ziff and husband Loren Ziff, Bess Maureen Rosefield, Scott Michael Rosefield and Mark Brian Rosefield; great-grandchildren, Allan, Rachel, and Sam Rosenberg and Adam Ziff. Other family includes her niece Margaret Moise Moses; Emily Moise; nephews Dee, Mark, and John Moise; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Moses, 742 Mattison Ave. in Sumter from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, June 27 and Friday evening, June 28. The funeral service will be held at Temple Sinai, Sumter, S.C. on Friday, June 28 at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Sumter Jewish cemetery.
A memorial service will also be held in Charleston on Sunday evening, June 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Anita and Ira Rosenberg, 10 Olde English Drive.

O'NEAL, Daniel
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Mr. Daniel M. O'Neal, 18, son of John B. O'Neal, III and Yvonne Jones O'Neal, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2002 from Grace United Methodist Church with Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr. and Dr. John M. Newell, III officiating. Interment will be in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Daniel was a native of North Augusta, S.C. and was a 2002 Honor Graduate of North Augusta High School.
Daniel had been accepted as a student at the University of South Carolina and had planned to pursue a career in music.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he had served as Crucifer, and sang with the Grace Singers. He also served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Additional survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, J. Blanton O'Neal, IV and Anne M. O'Neal of Charleston, S.C., a sister, Erin N. O'Neal of North Augusta, S.C., maternal grandmother, Myrtis Jones of Augusta, Ga.; paternal grandmother, Helen B. O'Neal of Fairfax, S.C.; aunt, Noel Ingram of Augusta, Ga.; uncle, Alton Jones of West Palm Beach, Fla.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rowland Funeral Home.

Kathelene "Kitty" B. Roberts, 78, of Goose Creek, died on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at her residence. Born in Logan, West Virginia on January 31, 1924, she was the daughter of Greenway and Cora Christian. She was a member of Trident Baptist Church of North Charleston. She enjoyed playing the guitar, listening to religious and country western music, collecting Elvis Presley memorabilia, making scrapbooks and her spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Clyde Christian, sister, Essie May Tarricone, and half-brother, Ronnie Christian. She is survived by a daughter, Carol B. Graves and her husband Ernie of Goose Creek; son, Charles W.A. Roberts and his wife Nancy; two half-sisters, Connie of Virginia and Sylvia Christian of Florida; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and former spouse Charles Roberts, Whiteville, N.C.
