Betty Sutton Eubanks, 71, wife of Harold Eubanks Sr. of 728 Hawkins Road, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at 8:33 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mrs. Eubanks was born in Wilson, N.C., on Dec. 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Ed and Gladys Wells Sutton. She attended Morningside Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Brenda Monroe of the home and Debbie Haney of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold Eubanks Jr. and Janet Eubanks of Union; a sister, Mary Bass of Wilson, N.C.; two brothers, Donny Sutton and Bobby Sutton, both of Wilson, N.C.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Eubanks was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Williamson and a granddaughter, Chasity Wright.
The family is at the home, 728 Hawkins Road, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Irene Riddle Sumner
Irene Riddle Sumner, 75, widow of John E. Sumner, formerly of Santuc, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Montross, Va. Mrs. Sumner was born in Woodruff on June 24, 1928, a daughter of the late Herbert and Josie Riddle. She was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Plant, and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sumner is survived by two daughters, Linda Cheryl Miller and her husband, Michael, of Montross, Va., and Elizabeth JoAnn Sumner of Columbia; a son, John Michael Sumner and his wife Donna C. of Union; four grandchildren, Bradley R. Laxton of Columbus, Ohio, Catherine E. Gregory, G. Brooke Sumner and Merritt L. Sumner, all of Columbia; a great-granddaughter, Savannah R. Laxton of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Martha Wood and Bobbie Morgan, both of Woodruff; two brothers, Ronnie Riddle of Simpsonville and Jack Riddle of Greenville.
Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by two brothers, Billy Riddle and Jerry Riddle. Memorial services were held today, July 25,2003, at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. The family received friends one hour prior to the service from 2 until 3 pm. at the chapel. Entombment followed at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family is at the home of her son, John Michael Sumner, 104 Bridletrail Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Salem Baptist Church, 1835 Tinker Creek Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Betty S. Eubanks

Mrs. Eubanks was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Williamson and a granddaughter, Chasity Wright. The family is at the home, 728 Hawkins Road, Union. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm. Sunday at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ed Eubanks, Curtis Eubanks, Chad Monroe, Alan Parker, Timmy Hollingsworth, and Terry Hollingsworth.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 728 Hawkins Road, Union. Memorials may be made to the Morningside Baptist Church Building Fund, 112 Bates Ave., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Rubin Cheeks
Rubin Cheeks Sr., 76, husband of Doris Cheeks, of 116 Brookside Drive, died Friday, July 25, 2003 at 9:41 a.m. at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Cheeks was born in Union County, a son of the late Ezell and Minnie Foster Cheek.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Jacqueline Cheeks and Geraldine Cheeks, both of Union; Cheryl Smith (Wayne) of Jessup, Md.; a son, Rubin Cheeks Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Alma Sims of Union and Flora Bracey of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Baron and James Cheeks of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Gibson & Brown Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Clingman Dorman
COLUMBIA Funeral services for Clingman Willis Dorman, 85, of Columbia, were held at 2 p.m. today at North Trenholm Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Copeland and the Rev. Robert Long. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park Visitation was held Sunday evening at Greenlawn Funeral Home.
Mr. Dorman died Friday, July 25, 2003. He was born on March 30, 1918 in Gaffney, the son of the late O. Clingman Dorman and Estelle Byers Dorman. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, having served from 1942 to 1946 with the Eighth Air Force as a heavy bomber pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal with three clusters and various other medals and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a lieutenant. colonel. He had lived in Columbia since 1939 and was a charter member of North Trenholm Baptist Church where he was a Deacon.
He retired as director of Highway Safety in 1978 and had served with the S.C. Highway Patrol for 28 years. He was a member of the AFA 8th Air Force Historical Society and the S.C. Troopers Association. Mr. Dorman was predeceased by Doris H. Dorman, his loving wife of 54 years. He is survived by his daughters, Harriette D. Ackerman and husband, Raymond, of Arden, N.C.; Dianne D. Meadow and husband, David, of Columbia; grandchildren, David Ackerman, Teresa Owens and husband, Jack, of Prosperity, Meredith Malec and husband, Jason, of Alpharetta, Ga., Suzanne Anderson and husband Charles, of Columbia; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy D. Spence of Sumter.
He was also predeceased by two sisters, Marguerite Dorman and Betty Petrie and three brothers, Jean E. Dorman, Ernest L. Dorman and John T. Dorman. Greenlawn Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Phyllis H. Jeter
ISLE OF PALMS Phyllis Anne Jeter, wife of Robert C. Jeter Sr., of the Isle of Palms, died Saturday, July 26, 2003. Mrs. Jeter was born in Charlotte, N.C., a daughter of Emmanuel J. Haigler and Lillian Gleason Haigler. She was a member of the S.C. Real Estate Brokers Association, and served as past president for the Charleston Women's Insurance Association.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Robert C. Jeter Jr. of the Isle of Palms; AND two brothers, Ricky Haigler and Bobby Haigler, both of Mount Pleasant. Friends and family are invited to attend her memorial service at The Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan's Island, at a date to be announced. Funeral services will be in the Jeter Chapel in Union with burial in the Jeter Family Cemetery at a time to be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Phyllis Jeter Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Citadel, c/o The Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, S.C. 29401. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Geraldine G. Owens
Geraldine Gault Owens, 73, widow of Edward Earl Owens of 236 T-Bishop Road, Jonesville, died at her residence Sunday, July 27, 2003, at 10:20 a.m. Mrs. Owens was born in Union County on Feb. 1, 1930, a daughter of the late J. B. and Mary Sanders Gault. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mrs. Owens was a graduate of the University of South Carolina-Union and was formerly employed with Wal-Mart.
Surviving are a daughter, Beverly D. Owens of Jonesville; three sons, James E. Owens of the home, Steven W. Owens of Buffalo and Bobby G. Owens of Woodruff; a granddaughter reared in the home, Maria D. Owens; a sister, Natalie Stapleton of Aiken; two brothers, Carl Gault of Anderson and Norris Ray Gault of Baltimore, Md.; and other grandchildren, Eddie and Leslie Owens, Ashley Owens, T. J. Pearson, Andy Pearson and Josh Pearson.
Mrs. Owens was predeceased by a sister, Faye Haile. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Chaplain Skip Snyder. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 236 T-Bishop Road, Jonesville.
Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to the American Cancer Society, 155 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Marjorie A. Trussell
SALUDA Marjorie A. Trussell, formerly of Augusta, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Saluda Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Platt's Belair Road Chapel with the Rev. Robert Gillespie officiating.
Interment will be in Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Trussell was born in Stapleton, Ga., a daughter of the late Frederick Abbott and the late Cornelia Ponder Abbott. She attend Georgia State College for Women. Mrs. Trussell was a homemaker and a gifted pianist. She taught piano for many years in the Augusta area and was a Charter member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William E. Trussell Sr. Survivors include a son, William E. Trussell Jr. and his wife Julia of McDonough, Ga.; a daughter, Glenda T. Crafts and her husband Everett of Prosperity; five grandchildren, Randall Trussell, Leigh Wise, Clay Trussell, Connie Sample and Rett Crafts and 11 great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the funeral from 10 a.m. until service time. If so desired memorials may be made to the Saluda Nursing Center, Riley Wing, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, S.C., 29138 or to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2367 Washington Road, Augusta, Ga., 30904. Platt's Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Road, Evans, Ga., has charge of arrangements.
Miss Hattie Vaughn
Miss Hattie Vaughan, 98, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at 12:45 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Miss Vaughn was born in Union on Dec. 15, 1904, a daughter of the late Robert D. and Mattie Crocker Vaughn. She was reared from infancy in the home of Elisha and Sue Crocker Brock in the Monarch Community.
Miss Vaughn was a charter member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she worked in the nursery and sang in the choir. She regularly attended services there each week until the last two months. Special friends Bobby and Pam Vaughan carried her to church as well as took her out to eat on occasions.
Although Miss Vaughn had very little in the way of worldly possessions, she was blessed with a happy disposition, a loving spirit, a grateful heart and keen interest in people and events. Miss Vaughn is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Reuben Wallace and the Rev. Alan Quarles.
Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Tommy Woods, Jack Woods, Barry Woods, Dewey Petty, Sonny Dye, Bobby Vaughan, Billy Gonce and David Crocker. The body remained at the funeral home and was placed in the church at 11 a.m. today to await the hour of service.
The family remained at their respective homes and received friends at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church from 1-2 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1438 Lockhart Highway, Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
