Louis H. Washburn
Retired from Sky City

LANCASTER Louise Henderson Washburn, 82, of 608 Laurel Court, Lancaster, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. Mrs. Washburn was born in 1921 in Spartanburg, a daughter of the late Wofford and Cora Foster Henderson. Mrs. Washburn was retired from Sky City and was a member of Wade Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.

Mrs. Washburn is survived by two sons, George (Kenny) Washburn Jr., and Charlie William (Billy) Washburn; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Beverly) Carnes and Mrs. Maxie (Edie) Robinson, all of Lancaster; a brother, Carlisle Henderson of Union; a sister, Cora Russo of Boston, Mass.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today from Mahaffey Funeral Memorial Chapel by Bill Sumner. Interment was in Lancaster Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Wade Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1204 Memorial Park Road, Lancaster, S.C. 29720. Mahaffey Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. James H. Byrd
Union resident

James Herndon Byrd, 58, of 112 Forest Circle, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at his home after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary. Alicia Clayton Union County native Alicia Clayton, 52, of 127 E. Lee Street, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 2, 1950 in Union County, a daughter of the late Hattie Mae Clayton and Eugene E. Clayton Sr. She was a 1969 graduate of Sims High School and attended the University of South Carolina-Union. Ms. Clayton was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.

Surviving are her stepmother, Rosa Lee Clayton of Union; four brothers, George Clayton, Wallace Clayton, Ernest Clayton and Roy James Jeter, all of Union; two sisters, Sara (Lewis) Morgan of Union and Edna (William) Sims of Detroit, Mich.; a stepsister, Minnie Lee (Garnett) Eison of Kelton; two stepbrothers, Aaron (Patricia) Parham of Jersey City, N. J. and Donald (Celester) Parham of Chester; two aunts, Effie Ruth Clayton and Alice Tann.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at 1008 Union Boulevard. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bruce D. Inman
Kelton native

Bruce Donald Inman, 75, husband of Mary Eloise Johnson Inman of 5228 Penn Circle, Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Union, died Monday, July 28, 2003, in the Earl B. Hulon Center for Caring in Jacksonville. Mr. Inman was born in the Kelton Community of Union County on Aug. 17, 1927, the son of the late Mildred Inman. He was of the Presbyterian Faith and was retired from the City of Jacksonville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a number of cousins and special friends. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, c/o Eddie Wilson, Drawer F., Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Andrew Hall
Union County native

Andrew Hall, 34, of 105 Lybrand St., died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born April 30, 1969, a son of the late Clint and Annie M. Jeter Hall. He attended Union County schools.

Surviving are six sisters, Carrie M. Jeter, Isabelle (Lenard) Edwards, Denise Jeter, Barbara A. Hall, Alice Hall and Jacqueline Hall, all of Union; three brothers, Melvin (Sharon) Hall and William (Melissa) Hall, both of Union and Clint A. Jeter of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Wyatts Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy H. Bobo
Retired from Swift Spinning

PHENIX CITY, Ala. Roy Haywood Bobo, 63, of 25 Fred St., Phenix City, Ala., husband of Gail Sanders Bobo, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital. Mr. Bobo was born in Charleston on Aug. 10, 1939, a son of the late Bessie Sanders Bobo and Wiley Bernard Bobo. He retired from Swift Spinning after 35 years service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Billy Ellis of Pewaukee, Wisc.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry Adams and husband, Jeff, and Angela Riddle and husband, David, all of Smiths Station, Ala.; Susan Bullard and husband, Stanley, of Talbolton, Ga. and Donna Smith and husband Smitty, of Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Sara Davis and Matrel Mosley, both of Union; five brothers, L.J. Bobo, Claude Bobo, and Sam Bobo, all of Union; Jimmy Bobo of Spartanburg and Wayne Bobo of Whitmire; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Bobo was predeceased by two brothers, his twin brother Ray Bobo and Ernest Bobo. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lakeview Memory Gardens with Pastor Alton Sellers officiating. The family will receive friends at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary tonight from 6 until 8. Betty B. Briggs
Union native

Betty Ann Beard Briggs, 67, wife of William Roy Briggs, of 302 Osborne St., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Briggs was born in Union on Sept. 22, 1935, a daughter of the late Erastus and Fannie Dunaway Beard. She attend the Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Eugene Briggs of Wellford, John Briggs of Union and Stephen Briggs of the home; two sisters, Elsie Weathers of Union and Marie Lindsey of Spartanburg; a brother, Bobby Beard of Anderson; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by five brothers, Joe Beard, James Beard, Shumbert Beard, Grady Beard and Erastus Beard Jr.; and two sisters, Ruby Beard Teague and Louis Beard Kirby. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Union Church of God by the Rev. Alton Stone and the Rev. Milton Hanna. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Briggs nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Robert Gilliam
Retired textile employee

Robert (Buddy) Gilliam, 68, husband of Elizabeth Gilliam, of 109 Daisy Circle, died Monday, July 28, 2003 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gilliam was born Nov. 14, 1934, the son of the late Henry and Amanda Gilliam. He attended Union County public schools and was retired from textiles.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Deborah Hill of Union and Sherry (Clifton) Chisholm of Leeds; a son, Bobby (Marva) Gilliam of Santuc; seven grandchildren, Tensslie Davis, Marcus Hill, Preston Davis and Quaneisha Smith, all of Union; Lee Sentel Clark of Whitmire, Catherine and C.J. Chisholm of Leeds; three brothers, Edward and Alonzo (Willie) Gilliam of Union and William Gilliam of Weirton, WVa.; three sisters, Viola (Sam) Jones of Union, Bertha Tucker of Weirton, WVa., and Lula Thomas of Detroit, Mich.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

William E. Henderson
Union County native

WHITMIRE William Eugene (Red Bill) Henderson Sr., 68, husband of (Mother) Lorraine Henderson, of 114 Nicole Drive, Whitmire, formerly of Jersey City, N.J., died Friday, July 25, 2003 at his home. Born in Union County, he was the son of the late Lee and Helen Gibson Henderson Sr. He was a retired employee of the Jersey City Board of Education.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five sons, William E. Henderson Jr., Tony Holley, both of Jersey City, N.J., Lamont, John and Timothy of Newark, N.J.; a daughter, Joyce M. McCurdy of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters, Estell (James) Barnes, Shirley (George) Sanders, the Rev. Sally (John) Chick, Evangelist Betty (Edward) Jeter, all of Whitmire, and Pauline Scott of Carlisle; three brothers, Albert (Kim) Henderson of Whitmire, George (Georgia) Henderson of Jersey City, N. J.. and the Rev. Odell Willie (Beverly) Henderson of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren, a devoted niece, Vera G. Barnes of Whitmire and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 12 noon at Mortuary Chapel with burial in Sims Chapel Memorial Gardens, Whitmire. The family is at the home. Sanders-Thompson Funeral Home of Clinton has charge of arrangements.

Nellie I. McCoy
Retired Monarch Mill

Nellie Ivey McCoy, 82, widow of Martin Lee McCoy, of 2247 Lockhart Highway, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. McCoy was born in Union on Aug.. 27, 1920, a daughter of the late Monroe and Eugenia Jett Ivey.

She was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, and was a former volunteer at Oakmont Nursing Center. Mrs. McCoy was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Winnie Couch Mission Circle, the Faye Teague Sunday School Class and the XYZ Travel Club of the church.

Surviving are a sister, Teresa Lawson of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. McCoy was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers. The family is at the home of her sister, Teresa Lawson, 2245 Lockhart Highway, where they will receive friends Friday evening. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

James H. Byrd
Former Union County veteran of the year

James Herndon Byrd, 58, of 112 Forest Circle, husband of Dianne Byrd, died at his residence Monday, July 28, 2003, after a long illness. Mr. Byrd was born in Union County on Nov. 5, 1944, a son of the late Gibbs and Hester Hayes Byrd. He graduated from Sims High School Class of 1964, Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill and Allen University in Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1968 to May of 1970.

He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and served as treasurer, past chairman of the board of trustees, past president of the Brotherhood, assistant Sunday School teacher, Missionary Circle No. 1, assistant scoutmaster of Troop 120 where he was awarded the Palmetto Award and the Silver Beaver for his service to the Boy Scouts for more than 23 years.

A past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #25, the Service Office Past Master of Widow Son Lodge #34; past Hugh Present Enterprise Roy Arch Chapter #25; past treasurer of R.L. White Commandary #4; member of J.E. Dickson Consistory #217; member of Tamin Temple #155 of the Shriners; and past president Tamin Shrine Club #2. Mr. Byrd was elevated to the 33 degree of Masons in October of 1990 in Houston, Texas.

He was a member of Sterling Lodge #344 of Elks. He was named the Veteran of the Year for Union County in 1997 and was appointed the Piedmont Legal Service in 1978 and served until 2000, serving on the board, as secretary and vice chairman. He was the past president of the Spartanburg Client Council and a member of Carolina Community Actions Board where he had been a volunteer since 1997 with the heating program.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-daughter, Lisa Williams of New Orleans, La., a brother, James (Bunk) E. Jeter of Union; eight nieces, Liza McCowan of Philadelphia, Pa., Annette Bethel, Michelle (Rev. Cleveland) Muller, Debra (Donald) Coleman, and Sharon (Clinton) Moultrie, all of Columbia, Angela Byrd of Lithonia, Ga., Theresa Byrd of Iowa City, Iowa, Brittany Byrd of McCormick; a nephew, Hayes Byrd Jr., of Columbia; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Byrd and Sylvia Marshall of Union; a brother-in-law, Lee Bethel of Miami, Fla.; eight great-nephews and four great-nieces; two special and devoted friends, Essie (Pat) Johnson and Anthony Lipsey of Union; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. James A. Calhoun officiating. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Wake services will be held at Corinth Baptist Church Saturday evening from 7 until 8 where Masonic and Shriners rites will be given.

The fraternal orders are asked to assemble at Corinth Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Widow Son Lodge #34, Tamin Temple Shriners #155, Royal Arch Chapter #25, J. E. Dickson Consistory #217 and the Sterling Lodge Elks #344. All orders are also asked to assemble at the church at 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

Viewing and visitation will be on Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 112 Forest Circle. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
