THOMPSON, Sr., Gary
WALTERBORO- Gary Lee Thompson, Sr., 78, owner of J.G. Thompson Sons Lumber Co. and husband of Rebecca June Davis Thompson, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday at the Chapel of The Fred Parker Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Richard A. Cushman. Interment will be in Live Oak cemetery, directed by THE FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Thompson was born August 29, 1923 in Walterboro, a son of the late John Gary Thompson and Bennie Lee Nettles Thompson, he was a Baptist and an Army-Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a Tailgunner on a B-25 and also served in Burma.
Surviving besides his wife, are a son Gary Lee Thompson, Jr., of North Charleston, two daughters, Brenda T. Hester and Rebecca T. Boykin, both of Edisto Island and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer T. Padgett.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday at The Fred Parker Funeral Home.
SKIPPER, Otis
Mr. Otis Sanford Skipper, 84, of Mint Hill, NC, passed away Friday, June 14, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
Otis was a native Charlottean, born July 19, 1917, on Cedar Street to the late Florence Hunsucker Skipper and William Sanford Skipper. He was employed by Southern Bell for 45 years, retiring in 1982 as District Forecast Manager of the Winston-Salem (NC) District.
He was a proud product of Third Ward Elementary, Alexander Junior High and Central High Schools.
Early in life, Otis developed a love of sports, starting with competitions on the playgrounds, which were the center of activity for children. He excelled as a swimmer, basketball player, handball player and golfer.
In 1935, he played in the first interracial basketball game at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte.
While Otis was a student at Alexander Junior High, the Charlotte News frequently referred to him as "that redheaded Skipper boy". Later at Central, he played for the legendary Coach Bob Allen and from then on was one of "Bob Allen's boys". In 1948, he received the trophy as best local player. In 1935, he played in the first interracial basketball game at Johnson C. Smith University.
Under the tutelage of Mr. Carl Link, Director of the YMCA, he became a championship swimmer, Mr. Link's assistant and taught many young men in Charlotte to swim.
A dear friend, Eddie Sloan, introduced him to handball and Otis was successful in winning championships in Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Knoxville. He served as Handball Commissioner for 20 years.
When he was transferred to Winston-Salem, he became a great supporter for Wake Forest University. He served as the President of the Sportsman's Club and on the Groves Stadium Building Committee. Former Wake Forest President James Ralph Scales said of him on many occasions that he was Wake Forest's greatest cheerleader. He also served on the Winston-Salem Convention Center and Coliseum Committee and was Sports Chairman for the Chamber of Commerce, promoting numerous activities. He was President of the Twin City Sertoma Club, where he aggressively promoted "Service to Mankind", putting on golfing events to raise money for mentally retarded children.
His love for golf led him to Tanglewood where he served as President of the Tanglewood Golf Association. He won a number of golf tournaments, participated for over 30 years in the Surf Invitational and had four holes in one in his career.

MSGT Billy Herndon Seagroves USAF (Ret.), 70, of Summerville, husband of Mary Grainger Seagroves, died Friday in a North Charleston hospital.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2002 at 2 o'clock in James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will be private. Family will receive friends at the residence following the service.

Mr. Seagroves was born on October 6, 1931 in Palmer, Tenn., a son of the late Aaron Seagroves and Ada White Seagroves. He attended schools in Palmer, Tenn. He was a member of the Ridgeville Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and the Shriners. He was a United States Air Force veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife of Summerville; son, Rick H. Seagroves of Myrtle Beach; daughter, Cathy Seagroves Gudger of Mount Pleasant; 2 step-sons, Michael Mizell of Summerville and John Mizell of Summerville; 2 step-daughters, Mary Tumbleston of Summerville, Alice Phillips of Summerville; sister, Rosa Jackson of Dunlap, Tenn.; 8 grandchildren.

ECKERT, Clifford
Clifford Herman Eckert, 80, of Goose Creek, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at a local hospital. Born October 5, 1921, in Roscoe, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Herman and Lucy B. Eckert. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force and owner of Eckert Insurance Agency in Goose Creek, S.C. He was very active with the American Legion Post 166 in Goose Creek, a 32nd Degree Mason, a lifetime member of Eastern Star and an avid golfer. He is predeceased by a daughter, Lucy Eckert Rotge'. Survivors include his wife, Edith Ferne Leinweber Eckert of Goose Creek, S.C.; two daughters, Nancy E. Hellstrom, of Goose Creek, S.C., Katherine Ann Rotge' Eckert, College Station, Tex.; a brother, James Eckert, Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Amelia Vaughn, Mobile, Ala. and a granddaughter, Dana Leigh Hellstrom, Vail, Colo. CROWDER, Nell
Mrs. Nell C. Crowder, 66, of Lon Stoudemire Road, Little Mountain, died Sunday.
Born in Dorchester County, she was a daughter of the late Mack K. and Veto Cone Mizell. She was an emploee of the Lowman Home and a member of Jedburg Baptist Church of Summerville.
Mrs. Crowder was twice married
, first to the late Vincent Proveaux and secondly to David P. Crowder.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Geneva H. Key of Kershaw, three sons, Robert Proveaux of Summerville, Curtis Proveaux of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Billy Humphries of Kershaw; seven sisters, Ms. Frances Mizell, Mrs. Elizabeth Peglar, Mrs. Lucy Myers and Mrs. Shirley Euthon all of Summerville, Mrs. Amelia Hutto of White Rock and Mrs. Kathy McCarn of Ridgeville and Mrs. Marilyn Boyer of James Island; two brothers, Teddy Mizell and Tupper Mizell both of Summerville; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church.
