Betty Ann Beard Briggs, 67, wife of William Roy Briggs, of 302 Osborne St., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Briggs was born in Union Sept. 22, 1935, a daughter of the late Erastus and Fannie Dunaway Beard. She attend the Union Church of God.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Cheryl Arthur and Debra Foster, both of Union; three sons, Eugene Briggs of Wellford, John Briggs of Union and Stephen Briggs of the home; two sisters, Elsie Weathers of Union and Marie Lindsey of Spartanburg; a brother, Bobby Beard of Anderson; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by five brothers, Joe Beard, James Beard, Shumbert Beard, Grady Beard and Erastus Beard Jr.; and two sisters, Ruby Beard Teague and Louis Beard Kirby. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Union Church of God by the Rev. Alton Stone and the Rev. Milton Hanna. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Briggs nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.
Memorials may be made to the Union County Cancer Services, c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 302 Osborne St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Nellie I. McCoy
Nellie Ivey McCoy, 82, widow of Martin Lee McCoy, of 2247 Lockhart Highway, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. McCoy was born in Union on Aug. 27, 1920, a daughter of the late Monroe and Eugenia Jett Ivey. She was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, and was a former volunteer at Oakmont Nursing Center.
Mrs. McCoy was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Winnie Couch Mission Circle, the Faye Teague Sunday School Class and the XYZ Travel Club of the church. Surviving are a sister, Teresa Lawson of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs.
McCoy was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm. Saturday at Mon Aetna Baptist Church by the Rev. Benny Green and the Rev. Will Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Terry Fant, Rick Garren, Ricky Ivey, Joel Shetley, Ray Garren, Gerald Lawson, Scott Lawson and Mark Vinson.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. David Keith, Dr. Lance Miller, Wayne Springs, Thomas Alexander, Charlie Hughes, Tim Robinson and members of the Faye Teague Sunday School Class; the Winnie Couch Mission Circle of Mon Aetna Baptist Church and the staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.
The family is at the home of her sister, Teresa Lawson, 2245 Lockhart Highway where they will receive friends this evening. The body will be placed in the church 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Mon Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Charles Brock
COLUMBIA Graveside services with full military honors, for Charles Walter Brock, 70, of Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Gerald Watford officiating. Active pallbearers will be members of the U.S. Air Force.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 until 9. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maple Street Southern Methodist Church, 2728 Preston St., Columbia, S.C. 29205. Mr. Brock died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Baptist Medical Center. Born on June 26, 1933, in Union, he was the son of the late Robert Berry Brock and Jennie V. Ford Byrd. He had been a resident of Columbia since 1974.
Retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years service, he then retired from Ft. Jackson after 18 and a half years of service. Mr. Brock loved to square dance, fish, bowl, and was an avid Clemson football fan, Atlanta Braves baseball fan, and NASCAR racing fan. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nellie A. Brock of Columbia; three daughters, Karen Livingston (Terry) and Melissa Andrade, all of Columbia and Traci Lovette (Rick) of Lumberton, N.C.; a son, Charles (Stan) Brock (Lori) of Columbia; a sister, Barbara Etta West (Elbert) of Putman; a brother, John A. Brock (Ollie Mae) of Putman; five grandchildren, Ashley Livingston, Jessica Livingston, Austin Andrade, Houston Andrade and Katie Brock; and several nieces and nephews. Greenlawn Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
William F. Cameron
William (Bill) Franklin Cameron, 66, husband of Judith Sprouse Cameron, of 1525 Mt. Tabor Church Road, Jonesville, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte after an extended illness. Mr. Cameron was born in Chester, May 9, 1937, a son of the late Jesse Avery and Sadie Ruth Runyan Cameron. He was retired from Torrington Co. and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Ann and Enoch Parton of Spartan-burg; two grandchildren, Zachary and Leslie Parton of Spartanburg; three sisters, Jessie (Dibby) Moore, Myrtle (Dolly) Childers and Della Gilchrist and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Cameron was predeceased by two sisters, Mattie Lou Yarborough and Patricia Stepp, and a brother, Hennis Cameron.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. today at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Alan West. The family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 1525 Mt. Tabor Church Road, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Sam Deal
Sam Deal, 86, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, husband of Catherine Roberta Carter Deal of 131 Bailey Town Road, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Deal was born in Lockhart, April 23, 1917, a son of the late William C. and Chaney Gibson Deal. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Rhonda D. Bailey of Union; two sons, Sammy Wayne Deal and Jimmy Lane Deal, both of Union; a granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer Nicole and Jerry Wayne Valentine of Sharon; three step-grandchildren, a great-grandchild; two step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Deal was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at the Haney Family Cemetery by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Active pallbearers were Robert Carter, Phillip Crocker, Richard Deal, Gary Deal, Bruce Taylor, Jerry Valentine, Lewis Clark, Jay Carter and Kent Crocker.
Employees of the Ellen Sagar Nursing Home formed the honorary escort. The family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 8. Memorials may be made to the Haney Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Robert Bentley, 172 Buck Fowler Road, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the home of his daughter, Rhonda D. Phyllis H. Jeter
Phyllis Ann Haigler Jeter, wife of Robert C. Jeter Sr., of Isle of Palms died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at her residence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivans Island. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the Jeter Family Cemetery, Jeter Cemetery Road, Carlisle.
Mrs. Jeter was born April 11, 1953 in Charlotte, a daughter of Emmanuel J. and Lillian G. Haigler. She was a real estate broker and member of the Church of the Holy Cross. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Robert C. Jeter Jr. of Isle of Palms; two brothers, Ricky Haigler and Bobby Haigler, both of Mount Pleasant; father-in-law, Russell (Bud) Jeter and brother-in-law, William Jeter, both of Union.

Rose R. Wilson
Rose Ray Wilson, 81, widow of James E. Wilson, of 147 Lofton Drive, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her home after a sudden illness. Mrs. Wilson was born in Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 2, 1921, a daughter of the late Charles L. and Daisey Mathis Ray. Mrs.Wilson was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are three daughters, Rose Marie Reid of Duncan, Annette Upton of Spartanburg and Betty McGowan of Union; a son, Sandy Wilson of Union; a sister, Gladys Nixon of Charlotte; a brother, James Ray of York; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Cryptside services were held Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Howard Johnson. The family received friends 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. The family is at the home of her son, Sandy Wilson, 169 Lofton Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charles W. Wright
Charles William Wright, 69, husband of Evelyn Noah Wright of 408 Meansville Road, Lot 32, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 at his home after a long illness. Mr. Wright was born in Columbia, Dec. 16, 1933, a son of the late James Albert and Josephine Proctor Wright. He was a self-employed brick mason and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Wright was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Mark Murphy of Union; Evelyn and Ernie Fisher of Inman and Sherry and Brian Smith of Spartanburg; two sons, Ronnie Wright and his wife Gayle of Union and Todd Wright of Union; two sisters, Betty Jean Watts of Blythewood and Ella Harmon of Lexington; four granddaughters, Teresa Wilbanks of Myrtle Beach, Carolyn Kirby and Dixie Wright, both of Union, and Grace Beavers of Spartanburg; five grandsons, Ronnie Wright Jr. of Lockhart, Shawn Everhart, Dalton Murphy and Harley Wright, all of Union and Brandon Fisher of Enoree; three great-grandchildren, Scott Wright and Grace Kirby, both of Union and Brittany Wright of Lockhart.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Monty King. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Mark Murphy, Brian Smith, Bobby Lail, Shawn Everhart, Kenny Beaver, Wayne Mitchell, John Wayne Henderson, Ronnie Wright Jr. and Roger Hill.

Charles E. Smith
GREENVILLE Charles E. (Teddy) Smith, 48, husband of Janice Fowler Smith, of 205 Redcliffe Road, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003. Born in Union, he was the son of the late Ted Ervin and Alma Quinn Smith. Mr. Smith attended Clemson University, graduated from Central Wesleyan College and was a real estate developer. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-son and his wife, Jeffrey A. and Susan G. Powell and her daughter, Ellen Ligon, of Greenville; a sister, Terry J. Tuminello and a brother-in-law and dear friend, Dino C. Tuminello and their children, Dominic C., Dorian R. and Crystal D., all of Anderson; a special aunt, E. Marie Smith of Buffalo; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Billie F. and Benjamin T. Burns and Jean F. and LeRoy P. Sharpe, his mother-in-law, Anna T. Fowler and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held 1 p.m. Monday at John Knox Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Brearley and the Rev. Arthur P. Campbell officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family received friends Sunday from 2:30 until 4 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
Serving as pallbearers were: Christopher M. Maddox, Charles I. Maddox, Dr. Steven Burkholz, Johnny I. Whitted, John E. Solder, Mario DiPietro and Robert G. Elias. Memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 110-D Hospital Drive, Simpsonville, S.C. 29681. The Mackey Mortuary had charge of arrangements.
