HAMMETT, Betty
Betty Jean Jones Hammett, of Summerville, S.C. widow of John Richard Hammett, Sr., died Monday, June 17, 2002 at a local hospital.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church, Thursday morning, June 20, 2002 at 10 o'clock. The rite of Christian Burial will be held at Summerville cemetery. Friends may call at Parks Funeral Home, Summerville, S.C. this Wednesday evening from 6-9 o'clock. A Prayer Vigil will be held at 7 o'clock.

Mrs. Hammett was born on January 24, 1935 in Camilla, Georgia, a daughter of Jessie Calvin Jones and Bonnie Kate Taylor Jones. She was a member of St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church.
Survivors include her son, John (Rick) Hammett, Jr. of Ridgeville; two daughters, Melissa A. Wesley of Circleville, Kansas and Pamela Thompson of Walterboro, S.C.; brother, Bobby C. Jones, of Camilla, Georgia; two sisters, Telane Jones Lee and Jessie Kate Sharp, both of Camilla, GA; five grandchildren, Tamra Thompson of Kansas, John R. Hammett, III of Germany, Sierra Hammett of Lebanon, Amanda Segura and Crystal Thompson, both of Walterboro; and two great-grandchildren, Barry Thompson and Hanna Thompson, both of Kansas.

FLEMING, Mellie Mae
Mellie Mae Jordan Fleming, age 86, of Dongola Highway, died Monday June 17, 2002 at Conway Hospital. Mrs. Fleming was born in Conway a daughter of the late William J. and Adeline Hyman Jordan. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and taught children's Sunday School. She was predeceased by her husband John Kelly Fleming and a daughter Jeanette F. Dorman. Surviving are one daughter, Vivian F. Smith of Conway; five sons, Glen D. Fleming, John K. Fleming, Harold Fleming all of Conway, J. Edward Fleming of Myrtle Beach and Freddie J. Fleming of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Frances J. Hardwick of Conway; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lee Singleton and Rev. A.D. Grainger officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. BROWN, Leroy
Leroy William Brown, 60, of St. George, SC, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at his residence. The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in St. Mark Baptist Church. Burial, directed by BROWN & SON FUNERAL HOME will be in Britt cemetery.
Mr. Brown was born in Harleyville, S.C. A son of the late Isiah Brown and the late Albertha Inabinett Brown. Roy obtained his education in the public schools of Dorchester County. At an early age he joined the Greater St. Paul A.M.E. Church and later moved his membership to St. Mark Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ornita Brown of the home, three sons, Ricky Brown and Eric Brown, both of Summerville, SC, Kevin Brothers of Lithonia, Ga., one daughter, Rosalyn Brown, Summerville, six sisters, Ophelia Adams of Jacksonville, Fl., Mrs. John McMillian, Decatur, Ga, Ms. Daisy Coats, Mrs. Viola (Albert) Bonner and Mrs. Betty Black, all of Harleyville. SHERMAN, Raymond
Colonel Raymond Burdell Sherman, US Army Retired, husband of Madge M. Sherman of Mount Pleasant, S. C. died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at his residence. The relatives and friends of Col. and Mrs. Raymond Burdell Sherman are invited to attend the memorial service of the former Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at American Legion Post 147 at 7:00. Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at the American Legion Post 147 Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until time of service.
Col. Sherman was born in Tiffin, Ohio, the son of Walter Ray and Nellie C. Sherman. He was a graduate of Calvert High School, Tiffin, Ohio and Alumni of Ohio State. He was a member of the following organizations: Life member and Past Commander of American Legion Post 147, Life member of VFW Post 10624, Lowcountry All Airborne, 82nd Airborne, Second Indianhead Division, Korean War Branch, 25th Infantry Division, Retired Officer's Association, 415th Engineer Brigade, 40/8, and Association of the United States Army. Col. Sherman received the Korean Service Medal, three Bronze Campaign Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star with V device, Senior Parachute Badge and Korean Presidential Citation.
Surviving are his wife of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one daughter, Deejah Sherman Peterson of Seattle, Washington, two sons, David Raymond Sherman of Columbus, Ohio and Dennis McClelland Sherman of Garland, Texas, three step daughters, Gloria J. Wimmer of Sunset Beach, NC; Susan J. McKown of Rock Hill, S.C.; September J. Ponder of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two step sons, Michael "Steve" Jones of Conway, S.C. and Phillip E. Jones of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Marie Schreiner of West Millgrove, Ohio and Rosemary Scott of Tiffin, Ohio.

DOGGETT, Thomas
Thomas O. Doggett of Charlotte died June 17, 2002. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2002, 3:30 p.m. at the Harry and Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C. Family will receive friends in the Club Room at the Cypress of Charlotte on Cypress Club Drive, following the service.
Tom was born in 1924 in Greensboro, N.C. and attended The Military College of South Carolina, "The Citadel" and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after three years with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. He joined Borden Chemical Co. as a salesman in 1951. During his career with Borden he was inducted as a member of the Young Presidents Organization at the age of 33. His work with the Borden Company began in Griffin, Ga., followed by Sao Paulo, Brazil, Mexico City, Mexico, New York City, N.Y. and concluded in Columbus, Ohio. He ultimately retired as Executive Vice President of the Borden Company in 1985. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, Carolyn Harrill Doggett who preceded his death in 1998, retired to River Hills Plantation, S.C. Shortly after his wife's death, Tom relocated to The Cypress Club of Charlotte.
Tom is survived by his sons, T.O. Doggett, Jr. and his wife Pamela of Charleston, S.C., Scott B. Doggett and his wife Barbara and their children Holly and Hannah of Dublin, Ohio, and C. Tyler Doggett of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Tom's surviving siblings are Ester Poole and Jack Doggett of Greensboro, N.C. and Nancy McLennan of Charlotte, N.C.
He was a dedicated and loving father who lived an extraordinary and exemplary life. He will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

WALTERBORO - Mr. Dan O'Quinn, Sr., 75, of 233 Fender Street died Monday at Colleton Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Great Swamp Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. O'Quinn was born in Colleton County, a son of the late Henry A. O'Quinn and Lottie Pye O'Quinn. He was a retired farmer and owner of O'Quinn's Peanuts. He was a member of Great Swamp Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Smoak O'Quinn, a daughter, Sandy Ulmer of Walterboro, sons, Dan O'Quinn of Walterboro and Jerry O'Quinn of Lafayette, Colo., a brother, Homer O'Quinn of Walterboro, a sister, Frances Jordan of Columbia, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
