CHAKIDES, Ruth
Mrs. Ruth Weekley Chakides, beloved wife of John Chakides, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Roper Hospital, Charleston, S.C. after an extended illness.
She was born January 1, 1925 in Varnville, S.C., one of eight children born to W.G. and Eva D. Weekley. She graduated from the Medical College of S.C. School of Nursing in 1947 and worked in hospitals in Beaufort, Columbia, and Charleston, S.C. She retired from the Charleston Naval Hospital. Growing up, she was a member of Deep Branch Baptist Church and was later a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Charleston, S.C.
She was the beloved wife of John Chakides of Mt. Pleasant and was the cherished mother of Katherine C. Gaffos of Mt. Pleasant, John H. Chakides and wife Caludia of Surfside Beach, Philip G. Chakides, and Daniel H. Chakides and wife Sherry, also of Mt. Pleasant. Surviving grandchildren are: Electra Gaffos Ariail (Mills), Nicholas A. Gaffos and Katherine L. Gaffos, John H. Chakides, III and Chandler R. Chakides, Pamela M. Chakides and Christine A. Chakides. She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Shinar of Kalamazoo, Mich. and Betty Denny of Thomasville, Ga.; two brothers, William Weekley of Varnville and Carroll Weekley of Hampton. She was predeceased by sisters, Elizabeth Saad and Doris Zahler and brother, Jasper Weekley. Several beloved nieces and nephews also survive her.
She is remembered for her love and devotion to friends and family, for her compassion as a nurse, and for being a wonderful cook, not only for her family, but for the countless friends who passed through her kitchen while her children were growing up.

SUR, Pratima
Dr. Pratima Sur, passed away in her sleep on the 14th of June 2002. Born on February 17, 1946 in Chinsurah (W. B.) India. She was the daughter of Alit and Milanmoyee Banerjee. Dr. Sur received her PhD from the University of Calcutta. She obtained her training in the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical University of S.C. 1982; she furthered her career in the Oncology Research Center at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She completed her Fellowship at Hayashibara International Cancer Research Center in Japan. She again came to the MUSC in 1992 as a visiting scientist in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her scientific works were presented at numerous national and international meetings.
Over the years, her papers on cancer-related investigations resulted in many publications. She was working in the department of Neurology as a visiting scientist working on a neuro-oncology project on Glioblastoma at the time of her death. She will be deeply and sadly missed by her family within the Department of Neurology and friends at MUSC. Services will be held Tuesday (Today), June 18, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cremation Center of Charleston, 11 Cunnington Avenue, Charleston, S.C.
RUSSELL, Clarence
Clarence Woodard "Tubby" Russell, 74, of Russellville, S.C., a retired insurance agent for Life of Georgia Insurance Company and a former security guard for Murray Guard Company died Sunday at his residence.

Mr. Russell was born on October 27, 1927 in Moncks Corner, S.C., a son of John Malcolm Russell, Sr. and Myrtie Woodard Russell. Mr. Russell was a member of the Russellville Christian Church where he served as a Deacon and former Superintendent of Sunday School. He was a member and former secretary of the St. Stephen Gun Club and a member of the American Boer Goat Association. He was a graduate of St. Stephen High School and an Air Force veteran. A daughter, Amelia Audrey Russell and a brother John M. Russell, Jr. preceded Mr. Russell in death. Col. Sherman was born in Tiffin, Ohio, the son of Walter Ray and Nellie C. Sherman. He was a graduate of Calvert High School, Tiffin, Ohio and Alumni of Ohio State. He was a member of the following organizations: Life member and Past Commander of American Legion Post 147, Life member of VFW Post 10624, Lowcountry All Airborne, 82nd Airborne, Second Indianhead Division, Korean War Branch, 25th Infantry Division, Retired Officer's Association, 415th Engineer Brigade, 40/8, and Association of the United States Army. Col. Sherman received the Korean Service Medal, three Bronze Campaign Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star with V device, Senior Parachute Badge and Korean Presidential Citation.
Surviving are his wife of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one daughter, Deejah Sherman Peterson of Seattle, Washington, two sons, David Raymond Sherman of Columbus, Ohio and Dennis McClelland Sherman of Garland, Texas, three step daughters, Gloria J. Wimmer of Sunset Beach, NC; Susan J. McKown of Rock Hill, S.C.; September J. Ponder of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two step sons, Michael "Steve" Jones of Conway, S.C. and Phillip E. Jones of Mt. GEORGETOWN - Samuel Bo Cherry, 26, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service will be 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the Fellowship with Jesus Ministries on Hwy. 701 in the Yauhannah Community. Burial will follow in the St. Peter's cemetery off of the Eaddy Rd. in the Choppee Community.

Mr. Cherry was born September 8, 1975, in Georgetown County, a son of Burness Cherry and Lila Jones Cherry. He was educated in Georgetown county and was a former heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Fellowship with Jesus Ministries.
He is predeceased by his father.
Surviving in addition to his mother are, a son, Abel Cherry of Andrews; one daughter, Samantha Louise Cherry of Georgetown; one brother, Charles E. Cherry of Georgetown; and three sisters, Ronzina C. Cribb and Dee C. Britt, both of Georgetown, Salina C. Britt of Andrews.
