Practiced medicine since 1946 Dr. Joseph Heriot Guess, 84, of 114 Park Drive, husband of Julia Mae Easterling Guess, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. Dr. Guess was born in Denmark on Sept. 12, 1918, a son of the late St. Clair P. and Sarah Heriot Guess.
He was a member and Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Union County School Board. Dr. Guess was a 1939 graduate of Clemson College and a 1942 graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina. He was World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946. He began his practice of medicine in Union in 1946 where he practiced until his death.
Dr. Guess was a member of the S.C. Medical Association, the Union County Medical Association and was a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice. He was a member and past president of the Union Lions Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph H. Guess Jr. and his wife, Emily Guess, of Denmark; Robert E. Guess and his wife, Vanda Guess, of Union and J. Decherd Guess and his wife, Deborah Guess, of Somerville; a daughter and son-in-law, Mae G. and Joe Chamberlain of Columbia; two sisters, Betty G. Thomas of Denmark and Sarah G. Barton of Greenville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Dr. Guess was predeceased by a brother, St. Clair Guess, and two sisters, Carolyn G. Watson and Martha G. Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Charlie Horne. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Denmark Cemetery in Denmark.
Active pallbearers will be Norris Fowler, William Jeter, Edward Farr, Dr. Ted Keller, Dr. Robert Yannetti, Dr. Jeff Craft, Dr. Robert Wentz and Dr. John Baarcke. Members of the medical staff of Wallace Thomson Hospital are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort.
The family is at the home, 114 Park Drive, Union. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 101 W. South St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Charles B. Morris
Charles Beaty Morris, 81, husband of Margaret Crocker Morris of 521 Lakeview Heights, died at his residence Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at 11:50 a.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Morris was born in Cherokee County on July 15, 1922, a son of the late Pierce and Myrtle Reeves Morris.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a member of the Claude Harvey Sunday School Class. Mr. Morris was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific and a veteran of the Korean Conflict stationed at Camp Lajune, N.C. Mr. Morris was retired from the U.S. Post Office after 24 years of service and was employed part-time at Arthur State Bank for several years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Charles Grayson Morris of the home; a sister, Mrs. Gus (Rachel Morris) Bobo of Spartanburg; four brothers, Francis P. Morris and Donald W. Morris, both of Spartanburg; H. Dean Morris and John C. Morris, both of Jonesville, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.,m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Terry Candler, the Rev. Bill Adams and the Rev. Gideon Long. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Terry Gregory, Neal Valentine, John Horne, Gerald Crocker, Neal Morris and Larry Morris. Members of the Claude Harvey Sunday School Class and fellow post office employees are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 521 Lakeview Heights. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Marian Bishop Rogers
SHELBY, N.C. Marian Bishop Rogers, 75, of 1561 S. Oak Dr., Shelby, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born in Union on June 30, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Ruby Smith Bishop.
Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Thompson (Tommy) Rogers. Mrs. Rogers retired as a Spanish teacher with Shelby Schools. Surviving are loving cousins, friends, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Shelby and a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill. She received an MA degree from the University of South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church of Shelby by the Rev. John Boggs, the Rev. Dr. Joe Reeves and the Rev. Scott Gilmer. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends following the funeral service in the Ladies Parlor of Central United Methodist Church.

Lindsey B. Thomas
JONESVILLE Lindsey Brooke Thomas, 16, of 959 Forest St., Jonesville, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 4, 2003, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Lindsey was born in Union on Dec. 17, 1986, a daughter of Amy Mashburn, and was reared in the home of her grandmother, Sandra Mashburn. She was an 11th grade student at Union High School where she was a member of the Union High School Marching Band and a member of the wind ensemble. She was a Baptist.
Surviving in addition to her mother and grandmother are a sister, Kaitlin, a brother, Luke and her grandfather, John Wolbrect of Union. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale, the Rev. Ben McLaughlin and the Rev. Ralph Brown.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family will be at their respective homes. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Don R. Brock Sr.
WHITMIRE Don R. Brock Sr., of 2865 S.C. 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at home. Mr. Brock was retired from the Department of Natural Resources, having served 26 years as a game warden., He also was retired from the Whitmire Unit of the S. C. Army National Guard. A native of Whitmire, Mr. Brock was a son of the late George D. Brock Sr. and Lucille Bridges Brock. He was born on Feb. 14, 1938, and was a member of the Whitmire Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joyce H. Brock of the home; their son and daughter-in-law, Don R. Brock Jr. (Christy) of Prosperity; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce B. Hall (Mike) of Whitmire, Crystal B. Neveseta (Floyd) of Jacksonville, Fla. and Donnette B. Davis (Steve), of Whitmire; 15 grandchildren; brothers, Jack and Melvin of Easley, David, of Dover, N.J., Larry, of Union; sisters, Willie B. Miller, Grace B. Bradley, Linda Brock, Jean B. Alewine and Myrtle Brock, all of Whitmire, Anne B. Smith of Gaffney and Barbara B., Mitchell of Elberton, Ga.
He was predeceased by a brother, George D. Brock Jr. and a sister, Jane Brock. Visitation will be tonight from 6 until 9 at the Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Whitmire with interment at the Whitmire Cemetery with the Rev. Marion Boozer and the Rev. Charles Rector officiating. Pallbearers will be Jack Brock, Melvin Brock, David Brock, Kevin Brock, Larry Brock and Bill Whitmire.
Honorary pallbearers will be The Department of Natural Resource officers, District 2, current and retired. Memorials may be sent to the Walden Strom Foundation, 2300 Bee Ridge Road, Suite 301, Sarasota, Fla. 34239-6226, or to Whitmire Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 276, Whitmire, S.C. 29178.

Jimmie Gilliam Jr.
Jimmie (Boone) Gilliam Jr. 61, of 133 E. Lee St., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Union County on Jan. 5, 1942 to the late Jimmie Gilliam Sr. and Ophelia Rice Gilliam, he was employed with the Union County Schools and Reid's Construction.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Glenn Gilliam of the home; a daughter, Hope Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Gerald Smith of Charleston, Andre Smith of California and Shawn Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a stepson, Harold Glenn of Union; two brothers, James E. (Jean) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert I. (Elizabeth) Gilliam of Union; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial in New Chapel AME Church Cemetery. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth P. Lawson
PAULINE Elizabeth Posey Lawson, 91, of Pauline, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Stone Station, she was the daughter of the late William Otis Posey Sr. and Evie Gregory Posey. She was the devoted wife of 57 years to Clifford Russell Lawson.
She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where she was an active member in the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School. A graduate of Robinson's Business College, she was an avid reader, a talented seamstress, a wonderful friend and an understanding sister.
Survivors include two sisters, Anna Mary Lancaster and her husband, G. Martin Lancaster of West Springs and Helen P. Brewington of Cross Anchor; two nieces, Anna Elizabeth Brewington of Greenville and Linda B. Morse and her husband, Jim, of Clinton; a nephew, Marvin Charles Brewington and his wife, Harriette, of Laurens; a great-niece, Ashton B. Adair and her husband, Cliff, of Lake Greenwood; two great-nephews, Brandon C. Brewington and his wife, Ann, of Clinton and W. Chadwick Patterson of Newberry; three great-great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; and many beloved cousins and in-laws.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by a brother, William O. (Bill) Posey Jr. and his wife, Edna White Posey; a brother, Ralph Posey, who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Marvin L. Brewington.
Visitation will be from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Friday at Bogansville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson. Burial will be in West Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bogansville United Methodist Church, 4052 Buffalo West Springs Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353.
The family is at the home of her sister, Anna Mary Lancaster. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Carroll Sanders
David Carroll Sanders, 74, of 414 Harris St., Jonesville, husband of Louise Gregory Sanders, died at his residence Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 at 3 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Sanders was born in Union County on Oct.13, 1928, a son of the late William and Cleora Gallman Sanders. He attended Fairforest Baptist Church, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was retired from Jackson Mills.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Carolyn S. Wycoff of Gaffney; two sons, Tommy Sanders of Boiling Springs and David Bruce Sanders Sr. of Union; two step-daughters, Judean Cohen of Jonesville and Sonja DeHart of Union; a step-son, Edward Garner of Jonesville; a sister, Juanita S. Comer of Union; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. The family will receive friends immediately after the memorial service. The family is at the home of his granddaughter, Jennifer Price, 206 Barron St., Union.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
