Susan Lynne (Patterson) Goroll, 50, of Ladson, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at a hospital in N. Charleston, S.C. Born April 19, 1952 at Mather Field AFB, Sacramento, Calif. She was the daughter of William and Carol (Forbes) Patterson. Sue was a 1970 graduate of Encina High School, Sacramento, Calif. She was employed as a hospice nurse in Calif. Sue was naturally drawn to the aged and the very young. She was compassionate and her gift was in helping people not able to care for themselves. She loved her nieces and nephews. Her friendships were forever. Sue enjoyed animals and gardening. She is survived by two sons, Doyle Ray Mitchell, Jr. (Dejay), Phoenix, Ariz., and Dennis Edward Goroll, N. Highlands, Calif.; her parents, Bill and Carol Patterson, Sacramento, Calif.; brother, Michael David Patterson, Fallbrook, Calif.; two sisters, Vicky Rene Zoradi, Mission Viejo, Calif. and Valori Ann Parks, Sacramento, Calif.; grandson Nicholas and granddaughter Ashlynn; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend Pat Northrop, Ladson, S.C. A celebration of Sue's life will be held on Monday, June 17, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 100 S. Goose Creek Blvd., (Hwy. 52) Goose Creek, S.C. CHARLESTON, SC- Former West Ashley Area Superintendent, Retired Army Lt. Colonel William Henry Jefferson, Sr., dies at 74.
Retired Army Lt. Col. William Henry Jefferson, Sr., 74, retired Area Superintendent of St. Andrews School District, died peacefully in the privacy of his home on June 12, 2002 in Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon Tuesday, June 18th in St. Mark's Episcopal Church. FIELDING HOME FOR FUNERALS, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL of Charleston will arrange a private burial.
Lt. Col. William H. Jefferson, Sr. was born in Charles City, VA, the eighth of twelve children born to the late Peter Jefferson, Sr. and Jane Oliver Brown Jefferson.
In addition to attending numerous military schools, Lt. Col. Jefferson received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1964 from the University of Omaha. In 1972 he obtained his Masters Degree in education at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY and in 1976 received an Education Specialist EDSA Degree at The Citadel in Charleston, SC.
Since joining the Army in 1948, Lt. Col. Jefferson's military career was full of achievements and accomplishments. He served in combat in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While leading an infantry rifle platoon in combat during the Korean War, re received a battlefield commission as Lieutenant. He served a Company Commander, Platoon Commander, Regimental and Corps Staff Officer. In Vietnam, he served as II Corps General Staff Officer writing battlefield plans for the deployment of three infantry divisions and their support units. Lt. Colonel Jefferson received the Oak Leaf Cluster to the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star with a "V" for valor, Three Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Rangers Tab, the Special Forces Patch, and was the recipient of many other medals and awards during his military and civilian careers.
On December 26, 1952 he entered into Holy Matrimony with Mildred Louise Drayton of Charleston, SC and this union was blessed with three sons.

Mrs. McKay was born July 19, 1910 in Early Branch, South Carolina, the daughter of Thad Lane and Mamie Bootle Lane. She retired form Belk Department Store. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Billie S. Lesemann of Johns Island, SC and Joyce S. Adams of James Island, SC; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her two daughters predeceased her: Barbara S. Ellis and Linda S. Kaiser.

After retiring from the US Army in 1969 with his last duty assignment as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Hofstra University, Mr. Jefferson returned to Charleston where he was employed by Charleston County School District. He served as Assistant Principal at James Island High School. Mr. Jefferson was promoted to Principal of Fort Johnson high School and after one year he was appointed Area Superintendent of St. Andrews School District, a position he held for 17 years. Noted as a leader in education, Mr. Jefferson was very active with students, their parents, teachers, and school board administration to maximize learning across the curriculum. Loved by all, he was viewed and respected as a motivator for high achievements. He contributed to the educational system in his district by having high standards for professionalism, strengthening the skills of students and expanding public relations throughout the community. It was often said that when you have a tough situation, "Jefferson gets the job done."
Mr. Jefferson was a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, The Retired Officers Association, Kiwanis Club, The Athenians Club, and the 100 Black Men of Charleston, Inc. He was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He served on the Vestry, and was former Senior Warden, Church Treasurer, and President of the Men's Club.
After retiring from the school district in 1991, Mr. Jefferson served actively on the boards of St. Mark's Church, St. Johns Mission, the United Way, and Family Service. He was appointed by Former SC Governor Carol Campbell to serve on the committee for the Reconstruction and Reorganization of the SC State Government.
He leaves to celebrate his life a loving wife, Mildred Drayton Jefferson; three devoted sons, William H. Jefferson, Jr. (Yvonne) and Michael D. Jefferson of Charleston, SC, and Kurt A. Jefferson (Belinda) of Jacksonville, FL; three loving sisters, Mrs. Elvira Coleman and Mrs. Jane Robinson of Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. Ann Jones of Charles City, VA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, relatives, friends and associates.

WARD, Jr., James
James Irving "Bubba" Ward, Jr., 71, of Hanahan, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at a local hospital. He was born on October 18, 1930 in Charleston. The son of James I. Ward, Sr. and Margaret Boone Ward. He attended Bishop England High School, graduated from Charleston High and attended Brown University in Rhode Island. He was a Navy veteran and a retired electrician from the U.S. Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, SC. He was a member of the Devine Redeemer Catholic Church and a member of the church men's association in Hanahan, S.C. He was also a member of the Elks Club. He is preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary W. Sullivan.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa A. Ward of Hanahan, SC, two sons, James I. Ward, III of Hanahan, SC and Mark Ward of Peachtree City, GA., a daughter, Cheryl W. Dunn of Sullivan's Island, SC, and nine grandchildren.
